  • The Hagaddah itself was the work of Scheinson, fathers friend, who must have put his love and soul in it. Sheinson is a fellow survivor from our native Lithuania. It was not a traditional Haggadah as we knew in Lithuania; it had many parts missing, but the altered text was specially suited for us survivors, especially those of us who intended to make Alyah to Eretz Israel. "We were slaves to Hitler in Germany." Was written on the first page, and all around the page were drawings of Jews being burnt and tortured, the chimneys of Auschwitz with the death head and the ominous sign," Brausebad" with the Swastika underneath. We then began the Seder with the usual blessings and dividing the six ingredients on the plates. Then we read the "Mah Nishtana". Indeed what had changed? What was the difference between this night and any other night? The first and most painful difference was the absence of small children who traditionally asked the four questions. They were all murdered by the Nazis. I thought of the years before the war in Lithuania when we all sat at the Pesach table and my younger cousins were asking the questions. They were all murdered for the simple reason that they were too young to work.   • The Survivors' Haggadah

    This is a very rare Haggadah written for the first Passover after its creators were liberated from concentration camps and ghettos. The Hebrew and Yiddish text was written by Yosef Dov Sheinzon and it includes woodcuts by Miklos Adler.Haggadot are religious texts that set out the order of the Passover Seder. This haggadah diverges significantly from the traditional form, reflecting the bitterness, sorrow, and determination to survive that reflect the author's experiences. It was produced by Josef Sheinson under the auspices of The United Zionist Organization of the Saved Remnant in Germany (Achida), and it was then copied as a second version by the U.S. Third Army (the United States Army of Occupation of Bavaria) for distribution to "displaced persons" in camps. The two versions are described in the literature as the "Sheinson Haggadah" and the "'A' Haggadah", respectively. The 'A' refers to the Third Army symbol on the cover. The Portland State Library has the rare original Scheinson version, which is also held by the Harvard and Princeton libraries.

Sometime in 1944, Adler and his family were loaded onto a transport for Auchwitz, but their train was diverted to Lager 15 in Vienna, and then to Theresienstadt, where they were liberated by the Soviet army on May 8, 1945. Ironically, it was not known that Adler was the creator of the woodcuts in the Haggadah until decades later. It is even uncertain whether Sheinson knew the artist's identity.This Haggadah also has a special connection to Portland State University. The Hebrew lead type for the first edition was secured by Judah Nadich, grandfather of Natan Meir, Lorry I. Lokey Assistant Professor of Judaic Studies. Judah Nadich was the U.S. Army's senior Jewish chaplain while Allied forces were liberating Nazi concentration camps, and was advisor to General Dwight Eisenhower on Jewish affairs in Europe.

  • In the winter of 1945-1946, Holocaust survivors in displaced persons camps around Munich created an extraordinary illustrated haggadah in preparation for the first Passover after liberation. For Five decades the original was all but forgotten, Now The Jewish Publication Society is proud to issue this facsimile edition, previously translated into English and published by the American Jewish Historical Society only as a limited edition. This is a haggadah written for and truly dedicated to the She'erith Hapletah, the Saved Remnant, "the few who escaped." Interwoven with the traditional Passover liturgy are two stories: that of the deliverance from Pharaoh in Egypt, and the Holocaust story of those Jews who survived Hitler. Bold illustrations vividly associate the Exodus with the liberation from Nazi horror. The heart of the work was not created by a group or organization but by one dedicated man, Lithuanian teacher and writer Yosef Dov Sheinson, who not only wrote the haggadah but also designed and decorated the pages and selected the powerful woodcuts crafted by another survivor, artist Mikls Adler. In his fascinating introduction editor Saul Touster, Professor Emeritus of American Studies at Brandeis University, provides not only the history behind this haggadah but also an incisive commentary that reveals the startling emotional depth the words and illustrations possess.
