Grand Valley State head baseball coach Steve Lyonhas led the Laker baseball program to new heightssince his arrival in 1999. Lyon has guided GVSU toeight straight NCAA DII Midwest Regionals, sixNCAA DII Midwest Regional title games, fourNCAA DII Midwest Regional titles, four NCAA DIIWorld Series appearances and played for the 2004 Na-tional Championship. In addition, the Lakers havewon seven straight Great Lakes Intercollegiate Ath-letic Conference titles.

Lyon enters the 2010 campaign with a 420-164-1(.719) mark at Grand Valley State and a 533-265-3(.668) overall college coaching record. He is 14th onthe DII active winning percentage list and is one of 28active DII head coaches to reach the 500-win mark.Lyon, the 2007 FieldTurf DII National Baseball Coachof the Year, is a four-time recipient (2003, 2004, 2005and 2009) of the ABCA Midwest Region Coach of theYear award. He has guided Grand Valley State to thefourth-best winning percentage of all DII schools(.724) since 2000 with a 390-148-1 mark. GVSU is294-96-1 (.753) the last seven years with four NCAADivision II World Series appearances. GVSU is oneof two teams in DII to appear in each of the last eightNCAA DII tournaments. His 2004 squad played in theNational Championship game where his Lakersdropped a 12-8 decision to Delta State. Lyon has tu-tored 36 ABCA All-North Central Region performersand three ABCA All-Americans.

Grand Valley State is 232-91-2 (.725) in GLIACaction under Lyon. The Lakers are 153-49-2 (.787) inGLIAC play the last seven years, including seven-straight GLIAC titles and six consecutive tournamenttitles. Lyon has coached 97 All-GLIAC performersduring his 11 years as head coach, including 50 first-teamer's. In addition, Lyon has produced one GLIACPlayer of the Year, three Pitcher's of the Year and threeFreshman of the Year honorees. Lyon was named the2003 GLIAC Coach of the Year.

The 2009 squad tallied a 45-16-1 overall mark anda 20-11-1 mark in GLIAC action. The Lakers finishedsecond on the GLIAC regular season standings, butwent 3-0 in the GLIAC Tournament to capture theschool's seventh straight GLIAC crown. The title wasthe Lakers' 14th in school history. GVSU advanced tothe 2009 Midwest Regional as the No. 2 seed, butdropped the opening game of the tourney by a 5-4count to Indianapolis. GVSU rebounded with winsover Rockhurst and Northern Kentucky to move intothe Midwest Regional title game. The Lakers claimed4-3 and 3-2 wins over Indianapolis to earn a trip to theNCAA DII World Series. GVSU dropped a pair ofclose decisions to Emporia State (3-0) and BelmontAbbey (5-4) in World Series action.

Lyon’s 2008 Laker baseball squad captured its sixth

straight GLIAC title and 13th in school history. GVSUfinished 34-13 overall went 3-0 en route to the GLIACTournament title. The Lakers earned the top seed inthe NCAA DII North Central regional tournament forthe third straight year.

The 2007 GLIAC crown was the Lakers' 12th inschool history which tops all all league institutions. Inaddition, the Lakers' .833 winning percentage (45-9)a year ago was also the top single-season winning per-centage in school history. GVSU won 18 straightgames at one point during the season, 16 of whichwere GLIAC games. GVSU swept three straightgames en route to the GLIAC Tournament title andwas awarded the top seed in the North Central Regionfor the second straight year. The Lakers advanced tothe title game, but dropped a 1-0 decision to SouthernIndiana.

GVSU fell just one game short of its fourth con-secutive North Central Regional title in 2006. TheLakers' 47 wins was the best in school history and thethird highest winning percentage in all of Division II(.825). GVSU rolled through its GLIAC schedule withan all-time GLIAC single-season best 28-3 record.

In 2005, Lyon led the Lakers to their third consec-utive appearance in the Division II World Series fin-ishing third. Grand Valley State's 37 wins ranks thirdin school history behind the 2003 and 2004 sqauds.The Lakers went 8-3 in the post-season including aperfect 3-0 in the GLIAC Tournament to claim theirthird straight GLIAC title.

Lyon led Grand Valley State to one of the best sea-sons in school history in 2004, posting a 46-16 overallmark and a 23-7 record in GLIAC play. The 46 winsmarked the highest win total in Laker annals. GVSUclaimed its second straight GLIAC Championshipwith a 3-0 record in the GLIAC Tournament. The Lak-ers then went 4-1 at the NCAA North Central Re-gional Tournament, including a pair of wins over hostAshland on the final day to advance to the DII WorldSeries for the second consecutive year. GVSU wonthree straight games at the World Series before drop-ping a tough 12-8 decision to second ranked DeltaState in the National Championship game. Grand Val-ley claimed a 2-1 12-inning win over fourth rankedChico State, a 5-2 win over eleventh ranked Bryant,and an 11-4 victory against third ranked Rollins enroute to the title game.

Lyon has led the Lakers to an impressive homerecord of 147-30-1 in his 10 years, including a markof 105-23-1 since the 2001 campaign. GVSU was 20-1-1 on its home turf in 2003, followed by a 15-2

record in 2004, a 10-3 mark in 2005, 19-2 in 2006, 14-3 in 2007 and 13-4 in 2008.

Lyon has tutored 72 first or second team All-GLIAC performers in his 10 years at the helm of theLaker baseball program. In addition, Matt Rafeld wasthe 2004 GLIAC Pitcher of the Year, followed byGrant Payton in 2005 and Jeremy Dow in 2006.Dustin Vugteveen who was named the GLIAC Playerof the Year in 2001 under Lyon. Cody Grice (2009)became the third Laker to earn Freshman of the Yearhonors, following Casey Robrahn (2006) and ScottAllen (2002). Kyle Gendron earned Payton was thelatest Laker to earn American Baseball Coaches As-sociation (ABCA) All-American honors when heearned second-team honors. Payton (2006), Rafeld(2004) and Vugteveen (2001) each earned ABCA All-American honors.

Prior to his arrival at Grand Valley State Lyonserved as the head coach at Oakland University forfive years. The 55-year-old Lyon led Oakland to a113-101 record during his five-year tenure. Stevecoached the Grizzlies to the 1994 GLIAC Tournamenttitle and a 30-win season in 1995. In addition, heguided OU to a second-place GLIAC finish in 1997.Lyon was an assistant coach at OU for five seasonsprior to taking the head coaching reigns. His main re-sponsibility as a Grizzly assistant was working withthe pitching staff. OU hurlers broke virtually everypitching record during Lyon's tenure, including aschool-record 3.32 ERA in 1995.

Prior to his coaching days at Oakland, Lyon servedas a high school baseball coach in the Detroit area fornine years. He was athletic director and baseball coachat Pontiac Catholic High School from 1979 to 1985,before moving on to Harper Woods Notre Dame until1987. He served as an assistant at Mott CommunityCollege in Flint prior to his arrival at OU.

Lyon, who earned a bachelors of science degreefrom Wayne State University in 1975, played two sea-sons of baseball for the Tartars and was an academicAll-American nominee as a junior. He earned a Mas-ter's Degree in Physical Education with an emphasisin sports administration from Ohio University in 1981.While at Ohio University, Lyon served as a graduateassistant baseball coach.

Lyon and his wife, Sandy, have three children: Jon,Stephanie, and Katherine.

Jamie Detillion is set to enter his eigth sea-son with the Grand Valley State Universitybaseball program and first as the associate headcoach. In addition to his duties as the the Lakers'hitting coach and recruiting coordinator, Detil-lion also handles responsibilities such as campcoordinator, strength and conditioning, thirdbase coach and assisting in all daily operationswithin the program. Detillion has been a key contributor to theLakers' offense over the past seven seasons.GVSU has hit at a .338 clip and averaged 7.4runs per game during that seven-year stretch.GVSU finished the 2009 campaign with a teambatting average of .344, ranking 14th in Divi-sion II. The 2009 team also finished 9th in Di-vision II in total hits with 687. The 2008 Lakershit .347, which ranked 13th in Division II, whilethe 2007 lineup ranked third among all divisionswith a .370 batting average. In 2006 GVSU hit.345, ranking 15th in NCAA Division II. Since his arrival at GVSU as an assistantcoach in 2003, the Lakers have won seven

GLIAC Championships and advanced to theNCAA Tournament all seven years. GVSU hasappeared in six NCAA Midwest RegionalChampionship games and advanced to theNCAA DII World Series four times (2003,2004, 2005 and 2009). The Lakers' 2009 WorldSeries appearance marked Detillion's fifth tripto the Division II World Series as he made thetrip in 1999 as a player at Ashland University.The Lakers have also held weekly rankings inthe NCAA Division II top 10 each of the pastsix seasons, including GVSU's first-ever na-tional #1 ranking in 2009. GVSU has beenranked as high as #3 in each of the 2006, 2007and 2008 seasons as well as a national runner-up finish in 2004. In seven seasons, 45 Laker position play-ers have been named All-GLIAC and 37 havebeen named to post-season all-tournamentteams. In addition, GVSU has set virtuallyevery individual single-season and careerrecord. Several GVSU team records have alsobeen broken over the last seven seasons, includ-ing batting average, hits, runs, doubles, triples,RBIs, total bases and on-base percentage. Detillion served as pitching coach at Ash-land University and assistant baseball coach atTiffin Columbian High School in Tiffin, Ohioprior to leaving for minor league spring trainingin 2001 and 2002. Detillion pitched for threeseasons in the Detroit Tigers' and CincinnatiReds' organizations from 2000-2002. He beganas a professional with the Chillicothe Paints ofthe Frontier League before signing with the De-troit Tiges. After playing for the Gulf CoastLeague Tigers, West Michigan Whitecaps andLakeland Tigers in Detroits system, Jamiesigned with Cincinnati and was assigned to theDayton Dragons. In his three seasons of profes-

sional baseball Detillion was 12-7 with a 2.92ERA and 6 saves in 145 innings. Jamie was also a pitcher and first basemanfrom 1997-2000 at Ashland University. Detillion received his bachelor's of sci-ence in education from Ashland University in2000 and is currently working on his masters ofeducation at GVSU. Gordon Alderink is in his 20th season aspitching coach for Grand Valley State, his 10thas an assistant under Steve Lyon. GVSU hasranked among GLIAC leaders in virtually everypitching category during Alderink's tenure.Alderink was named the 2006 National CollegePitching Coach of the Year by Collegiate Base-ball, a prestigious honor given to the top pitch-ing coach in all divisions of the NCAA. Alderink has tutored four All-Midwest Re-

gion pitchers in the past six years, including apair of Amercian Baseball Coaches Association(ABCA) All-Americans. Matt Rafeld (2004),Grant Payton (2005), Jeremy Dow (2006) andAndrew Benjamin (2009) have earned ABCAAll-Midwest Region honors, while Rafeld, Pay-ton and Dow were all named GLIAC Pitchersof the Year. Payton tied the GVSU record forvictories with 21 during his two years underAlderink's tutelage. Payton and Rafeld are theonly two Lakers to earn ABCA All-Americanhonors. Alderink has guided five of GVSU's top10 in career victories in the last seven years. Alderink came to GVSU as an assistantprofessor in the Physical Therapy Program in1984. He received his physical therapy trainingat the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN in 1978,Master's degree in kinesiology from the Univer-sity of Michigan in 1983, and PhD in Engineer-ing Mechanics from Michigan State Universityin 2003. Gordie continues as a fulltime Associ-ate Professor in the Physical Therapy programwhere he teaches courses in kinesiology, biome-chanics, orthopaedic diagnosis, spinal manualtherapy, and research design. His research inter-ests center on spine and gait biomechanics.

Alderink received his BA in Biology fromHope College in 1976 where he participated inbasketball for 2 years and baseball for 4 years.He captained the baseball team as a junior andsenior. Alderink played amateur baseball for sev-eral years after college, but in the last 20 yearshas focused on the prevention of youth baseballinjuries through teaching proper pitching me-chanics. The 53-year old Alderink is married toSally and they have two daughters, Jenny andElizabeth.

Grand Valley State competes in the Great Lakes Inter-collegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and NCAA Divi-sion II. The GLIAC consists of twelve colleges anduniversities located in Michigan and Ohio. Grand Valley was a charter member of the GLIAC, join-ing Lake Superior State, Northwood, and Saginaw Valley toform the conference in 1972. Since then, the GLIAC has ex-panded throughout the Great Lakes Region. This season, the GLIAC schedule will consist of 35games. Grand Valley will play the likes of Findlay, Hillsdale,Northwood, Ashland, Tiffin, Saginaw Valley State, andWayne State each in a five-game series. Although baseball is one of the GLIAC’s premier sports,it is just one of 20 sports in which the GLIAC crowns cham-pions. In addition to baseball, the GLIAC decides titles inmen’s and women’s basketball, football, men’s and women’scross country, men’s & women’s golf, men’s and women’ssoccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving,men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor andoutdoor track, and women’s volleyball. Grand Valley State has won 14 GLIAC titles in baseball,most recently in 2009.
