We welcome you to another season of Hillcat baseball, which promises to build upon the excellence we've seen in previous years.

The development of our athletic programs mirrors the exciting changes that have occurred throughout the university with a distinguishedlist of recent milestones that includes:

• Developing as Oklahoma’s fastest growing regional university during the past decade while still maintaining the personalized academic attention that’s become the university's hallmark;

• Adding new academic programs to meet the needs of Oklahoma’s business and industry, including our first master’s degree program starting in fall 2014;

• Constructing two student apartment communities and a dining hall (to open in fall 2014) that serve the Tulsa metropolitan area’s only residential, public university;

• Expanding and remodeling academic facilities to provide students with up-to-date academic resources; and• Developing strong ties with the communities we serve in order to fulfill our mission of education and service.

RSU’s rapid growth also extends to our intercollegiate athletics, which are a relatively new addition after being reintroduced to campus in 2005. In only a few short years,our Hillcat teams have become a vital component of the university’s DNA providing an infectious campus spirit and a strong connection to the community. The universityand our students have invested in athletic facilities, including the new baseball/softball complex, Bushyhead Fieldhouse renovations, expansion and turf installation atSoldier Field and construction of soccer and cross country facilities on campus.

We appreciate our entire student body for their support of these campus initiatives, including the student fees that funded the recently completed $4 million renovationsof the soccer facilities and baseball/softball complex. Their support signals a strong vote of confidence in our athletic programs, but also represents their investment inthe quality of life at Rogers State.

The Hillcats are continuing our affilation with the Heartland Conference in the NCAA Division II. We have appreciated the high priority these two organizations haveplaced on promoting healthy values, developing strong character traits, and encouraging academic achievement among all student-athletes. These are core values forRSU’s programs, and we work daily to impress them upon our student-athletes. We appreciate your interest in RSU athletics, and we look forward to another great seasonon the diamond.

The Rogers State baseball team begins a new era in 2014 as theHillcats will embark on their inaugural season in the NCAADivision II Heartland Conference.

The Hillcats have a whole new look after graduating 15 playersfrom last season’s NAIA World Series team that finished the finalseason in the NAIA with a 36-24 overall record. Head CoachRon Bradley will have several new faces playing across thediamond with 20 newcomers on the squad. Despite losing everystarting position player to graduation, the Hillcats return 14players who saw the field for the Diamond Cats a season agowhile adding three redshirt freshmen who had a year to learnthe RSU system.

“We probably do not have as much flash on our infield but thisgroup is probably the most consistent infield that we have hadas far as making the routine plays,” Bradley said. “Our programhas always been built around pitching and defense. Losingseveral great veteran players has created a situation wherethe door is wide open for playing time. We are hoping to seesome guys make the most of the opportunity”

PitchersThe most touted returners for the Hillcats are onthe pitching staff. RSU returns seven pitchersfrom last year’s team, including a pair of seniorswho are slated to start weekend games forthe Diamond Cats.

Kyle Duncan and Jesse Baird are two ofthe most experienced hurlers on theHillcat staff. Duncan has been aweekend starter for the Hillcats for thelast two seasons. The Bedford,Texas native tallied complete-gameperformances in consecutive NAIAOpening Round Championshipgames to send the Hillcats to theWorld Series. Baird joined theHillcats last season, and despitebeing plagued with injury early, theVerdigris, Okla., product played in 10games last season with five starts.

“Jesse and Kyle are both seniors returning and theyare the two coming back with the most experience,”Bradley said. “They both have post-season experience.Jesse got off to a slow start last year due to a broken hand buthe has come back and had an outstanding fall. He hastremendous work ethic and leadership. He is going to give usthat quality arm that will match up with anyone’s front line. Kyle

has been able to contribute in the rotation for the last twoseasons, and he finds a way to get the job done. He has pitchedvery well for us and I expect him to match up with weekendstarters.”

A junior duo from Broken Arrow, Okla., emerged as keycomponents out of the Hillcat bullpen a year ago. T.J. Lawplayed in 17 games last season with three saves and one win.Mason Marquette played in 16 games last season with threesaves on the year. He tallied a 2.78 ERA, the lowest of any

returner on staff.

“T.J. has had a great fall and hasimproved every year. He is either aweekend starter or a heavy contributorout of the bullpen. Mason is a specialtyguy, he gives teams a different look. Hehas a chance to be really effective and

we have entertained him being a starterin the rotation,” Bradley added.

Redshirt freshman Collin Thomas,sophomore Zach Tyson and NorthernOklahoma College-Tonkawa transferEdward Layton will vie for time in the

rotation.

“The first two weeks of the seasonare very important for our rotation.Collin is in the mix to pitch somequality inning. He is a six foot-seven inch right-handed pitcher

with a lot of promise. Zach will alsobe in the mix for a spot in the rotationalong with Edward, a junior college

transfer who could be a mid-weekstarter or a bullpen guy in a

conference series.”

A trio of southpaw pitchers will compete for time onthe mound. Senior Kyle Deaton, sophomoreColton Weeks and junior Travis Teague all giveCoach Bradley options from the left side.

“Colton has earned an opportunity to pitch and hasgrown in the program. Kyle Deaton and TravisTeague will also be in the mix. Senior DrewAnthony along with newcomer Matt Shepherd

will more than likely come out of the bullpen.

Another specialty pitcher we like is Jordan Keith from Verdigris.He throws submarine and could be a really good match up guy.He will definitely get some opportunities.”

The Hillcats haven’t been known to have a true closer on thestaff and this season will not be the exception. Coach Bradleymay call on any number of guys to close out the game.

“Coach (Robert) Brown and I have talked about having a truecloser. Edward could fill that role along with maybe T.J., but heis too valuable to put on the back burner.”

CatchersRSU will look to Johan Ochoa to fill the void at catcher after theloss of projected starter Emmanuel De La Cruz. Ochoa was theHillcats projected starting third baseman but has qualityexperience behind the dish. Freshman Joe Crow will also seetime at catcher.

“Manny will be a student assistant for us and he will really beinstrumental in the development of our catchers. Right now weare looking to move Johan to catcher. He played catcher lastsummer and really had a good fall in the innings that he caught.He is penciled in as our opening day catcher. Joe is a hardworker and has made a lot of improvement this fall. He is a guywe feel can develop over the next two years. But he is going tohave an opportunity to play some quality innings early.”

u The Hillcats return 15 players from the 2013 squad.

First Base With a few shifts around the diamond early this spring, Vian,Okla., native Hunter Spencer has earned a starting spot at firstbase. The junior transfer from Connors State College tallied a.364 batting average during his sophomore campaign.

“The door has opened for Hunter to get some time at first base.He probably has the most power on our team so it will be goodto get him in the lineup.”

Second BaseA trio of returners will compete for the starting spot at secondbase with senior Nick penciled in as the everyday starter. TheWilmington, N.C., native appeared in 32 games, making 13starts last season.

“Second base has been a very competitive position. The front-runner is Nick Malter. He was able to get some playing time lastyear and he is a very quality defender. Hamilton Hernandez, whohas been a backup at second base for the last three seasons,will get some playing time. Austin Culwell is more of a utility guy.He has one of the better arms on the infield and always leavesit all on the field; he can play second, third or short.

ShortstopNorthern Oklahoma College-Enid transfer Chase Knott will playshortstop for the Diamond Cats. The junior from Locus Grove,Okla., played in 47 games with 23 RBI and 28 runs scored as asophomore.

2014 BASEBALL OUTLOOK

“Our everyday shortstop will be Chase. He has had a good falland is probably going to hit in the two or three-hole for us. Hehas brought a lot to the program both defensively and offensively.Ryan Hendricks is a utility guy who can play everywhere on theinfield and could contribute. He is someone that makes theroutine play and comes up with big hits.”

Third BaseSophomore Caleb Kohlmeyer saw time at first base last season,playing in 18 games with a .333 batting average as a truefreshman. With Ochoa moving behind the plate, Kohlmeyer willmost likely shift to third base.

“Caleb was penciled in at first but might get some time to playthird since Ochoa will be moving to catcher.”

OutfieldThe Hillcats will have big shoes to fill in the outfield this seasonas they lost NAIA All-American Colton Campbell and 2012 WorldSeries Gold Glove winner Eric Baker to graduation.

Junior Blake Heston was slated to be the only returning starterthis season after playing in 54 games, making 38 starts last year.However, the Pryor, Okla., native will redshirt the season afterundergoing surgery in the fall.

“We took a big hit losing Blake. He was a good left-handed hitterand defender. But on the bright side, we will have Blake back forthe next two years.”

Junior Alex Cochran was the Diamond Cats go-to courtesyrunner last year and played defensively in the outfield during lateinnings last season. The Broken Arrow, Okla., native played in54 games last year and finished second on the team in stolenbases with 13.

“Alex is penciled in as our center fielder. He has a lot of energyand will hit lead off. He has a chance to steal 20 or more bases,is a great defender and has made progress offensively.”

“One of the newcomers that I feel has a chance to be anoffensive plus for us is Blake Gipson. He played at Dallas Baptistand Carl Albert. He really has a chance to be a three-year starterand brings a lot of pop to our lineup. He has a lot of potential.”

Claremore, Okla., native J.P. Seifried is penciled in as RSU’severyday leftfielder. He played in 38 games, starting in 35 as atrue freshman at Mid-America Christian University.

“A transfer from Mid-America Christian by way of Claremore,J.P. will start in left field. We need him to have a good seasonoffensively.”

Another Claremore native that could be an immediatecontributor in the outfield and on offense is Isaac Hollihan, a truefreshman from Claremore High School.

“Isaac will get some time off of the bench as a left-handed hitter.He is from Claremore and has experience in some big games.Hopefully he can DH or pinch-hit off the bench. “

ScheduleThe Hillcats schedule looks much different than in years past.RSU will face several teams for the first time in program historyand have several long road trips to contend with duringconference play.

“This schedule brings on a different flavor than we are used to.There is not much difference from the top to the bottom of theschedule.”

The Heartland Conference has a rich baseball tradition with St.Mary’s and St. Edward’s each making the NCAA Division II WorldSeries over the last two years. Although the conference is new,RSU will continue its rivalry with former Sooner AthleticConference foe Lubbock Christian.

“We have had some battles in the past with Lubbock Christianand hopefully the rivalry will continue. Oklahoma Christian is alsoa team we have played in the past in the SAC. St. Edward’s andSt. Mary’s are probably the most talented two teams in theconference both making World Series appearances in the past.Those are going to be trips that brings a little excitement to ourcommunity to be playing teams from those areas. It will be anenjoyable atmosphere.”

The Hillcats will end the season with a familiar foe and one ofthe club’s biggest rivals against Oklahoma Baptist at OneOKField in Tulsa, Okla., on April 29.

“We are able to play OBU and I feel like they were our biggestrival in the SAC. It always seemed to come down to them andus. It was a very good rivalry. We are going to get to end ourseason playing them at OneOK.

RSU will take on Northeastern State and Arkansas Tech in non-conference play. The Hillcats have faced both squads in pastseasons.

“NSU and Arkansas Tech are both good non-conferenceopponents that will be great challenges for our ball club. Eventhough we lost some games off our schedule this season, wehave a more consistent schedule. We are looking forward to theNCAA DII schedule and the transition to full membership.”

The Heartland Conference is an NCAA Division II conference, founded in 1999, that currently consists of 12 schools, seven fromTexas, three from Oklahoma, and one each from Arkansas and Kansas. The schools comprising the Heartland Conferencestretch from as far north as Wichita, Kan., as far east as Fort Smith, Ark., as far south as Laredo, Texas, and as far west asGoodwell, Okla.. The Conference stretches over a distance of 1,050 miles north to south and 610 east to west.

The schools that are in the Heartland Conference include founding members St. Edward's University (Austin, Texas), and St.Mary’s University (San Antonio, Texas), and expansion members Dallas Baptist University (Dallas, Texas) in 2002 and again in2004, Oklahoma Panhandle State University (Goodwell, Oklahoma) in 2002, and Newman University (Wichita, Kansas), TexasA&M International University (Laredo, Texas) and The University of Texas of the Permian Basin (Odessa, Texas) in 2006, theUniversity of Arkansas-Fort Smith (2009), McMurry University and Oklahoma Christian University in 2012, and Rogers State andLubbock Christian in 2013.

Among the many accomplishments of these institutions are national championships in baseball, golf, swimming, basketball,softball, and nationally ranked teams in all sports. The strength of the student-athlete concept is well supported by the manyNCAA scholar-athletes in each school, the high cumulative GPA of the student-athletes in each school, and the high number ofstudent-athletes who graduate from each institution in the Heartland.

The Heartland Conference is the newest of the NCAA Division II conferences. At the present time, there are 24 conferences inNCAA Division II, totaling almost 300 institutions in full or provisional status across the nation.

Members of NCAA Division II believe that a well-conducted intercollegiate athletics program, based on sound educationalprinciples and practices, is a proper part of the educational mission of a university or college and that the educational welfare ofthe participating student-athlete is of primary concern.

ABOUT THE HEARTLAND CONFERENCE

Page 51: 2014 Rogers State University Baseball Media Guide

49

Members of NCAA Division II support the following principles in the belief that these objectives assist in defining the division andthe possible differences between it and other divisions of the Association. This statement shall serve as a guide for the preparationof legislation by the division and for planning and implementation of programs by institutions and conferences. A member ofDivision II:

u Believes in promoting the academic success of its student-athletes, measured in part by an institution's student-athletes graduating at least at the same rate as the institution's student body;

u Believes that participation in intercollegiate athletics benefits the educational experience of its student-athletes and the entire campus community;

u Believes in offering opportunities for intercollegiate athletics participation consistent with the institution's mission and philosophy;

u Believes in preparing student-athletes to be good citizens, leaders and contributors in their communities;

u Believes in striving for equitable participation and competitive excellence, encouraging sportsmanship and ethical conduct, enhancing diversity and developing positive societal attitudes in all of its athletics endeavors;

u Believes in scheduling the majority of its athletics competition with other members of Division II, insofar as regional qualification, geographical location and traditional or conference scheduling patterns permit;

u Recognizes the need to "balance" the role of the athletics program to serve both the campus (participants, student body, faculty-staff) and the general public (community, area, state);

u Believes in offering opportunity for participation in intercollegiate athletics by awarding athletically related financial aid to its student-athletes;

u Believes that institutional control is a fundamental principle that supports the educational mission of a Division II institution and assumes presidential involvement and commitment. All funds supporting athletics should be controlled by the institution. The emphasis for an athletics department should be to operate within an institutionally approved budget, and compliance with and self-enforcement of NCAA regulations is an expectation of membership; and

u Believes that all members of Division II should commit themselves to this philosophy and to the regulations and programs of Division II.

The “Hillcat” was developed and officially unveiled to the campus in2005 by RSUPR – the university’s Office of Public Relations – with theassistance of SME Branding of New York, N.Y.

Style Guidelines

u When making a proper name ending in s possessive, DO NOT add an s: i.e. Coach Blevins’, NOT Coach Blevins’s.

u In athletic media communications and publications, DO NOT use the term Lady Hillcats or Lady Cats. Hillcats, Cats, Softball Cats, Diamond Cats (baseball), etc. are acceptable.

u Refer to the institution as Rogers State on first mention in news releases or other communications about sports events. The words university or college are understood in such releases, and are a commonly accepted practice within athletics.

Fear the ClawNot long after Hillcat men’s and women’s basketball was intro-duced at RSU, the home court at the Claremore Expo Centerquickly gained a reputation as a formidable venue for oppo-nents.

As a member of the Hillcat team aligns himself or herself on thefree throw line, the crowd at the Expo Center extends one armskyward and makes the sign of the claw with their fists.

If the shot falls successfully, arms descend in the manner ofthe scratch of a ferocious wild cat.

As members of an opposing team prepare to shoot a freethrow, the rowdy RSU student section has been known tointimidate the shooter. Depending on the shooter’s fortitude,sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t!

RSU HILLCAT TRADITIONS

u The Hillcat tradition of “Fear the Claw” began seven years ago and has spread throughout, the student body.
