Rogers State University: A Great Oklahoma Higher Education Success StoryRogers State University holds a historic position in theannals of Oklahoma higher education.

Since RSU was accredited as a four-year university in2000, enrollment has increased by more than 75 per-cent, earning RSU the title of one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities.

RSU is a dynamic, progressive university with more than4,400 students, widely recognized for its high-qualityacademic programs, distance learning options, and high-technology learning environment. RSU is the only publicfour-year, residential university in the Tulsa metropolitanarea.

RSU offers a wide variety of bachelor's and associatedegrees. Innovative new bachelor's degrees includeapplied technology, environmental conservation, militaryhistory, sport management, and game development.

Many students from northeast Oklahoma who plan toattend medical school complete their undergraduatestudies through RSU's program in medical/molecularbiology. And RSU enjoys a statewide reputation for aca-demic excellence in its nursing program.

Distinguished Academic Achievements RSU received continued accreditation from the HigherLearning Commission of the North Central Association ofColleges and Schools without further required evaluationfor 10 years - a rarity in higher education in Oklahomaand a major accomplishment achieved by few universi-ties. This is truly a testament to the high academic qual-ity of RSU.

RSU participates in The Washington Center InternshipProgram, a nationally recognized program placing stu-dents with private, public, and nonprofit organizations inWashington, D.C. Students participating in the semester-long internship earn college credit while they gain "realworld" experience within their field of interest and inter-act with influential leaders and policymakers. RSU is oneof only three universities in Oklahoma to participate inthis prestigious program.

Most RSU faculty members hold doctoral degrees or thehighest degrees available in their fields from esteemedinstitutions across the nation, including PrincetonUniversity, Duke University, and the University ofOklahoma.

A Brief History of RSURSU was founded in 1909 as Eastern UniversityPreparatory School in Claremore. The school preparedthe daughters and sons of area residents to attend col-lege. Historic Preparatory Hall, known for its iconic golddome, was the first building on the school's campus.

However, the school closed only a few years after itopened. Taking its place was the storied OklahomaMilitary Academy (OMA), which operated on the Hillfrom 1919 to 1971.

Known as the “West Point of the Southwest,” OMA hasan extensive register of graduates who became greatleaders, both in military and civilian life. More than 2,500OMA graduates served in the Armed Forces of the UnitedStates during World War II, the Korean War, and theVietnam War. More than 100 graduates gave their lives inservice to their country.

In 1971, OMA closed and Claremore Junior Collegeopened on the Hill, serving more than 400 students. Thejunior college grew rapidly in the 1970s, and by the timeit was renamed Rogers State College in 1982, the institu-tion boasted a variety of associate degree programs, dis-tance learning capabilities, a new radio and televisionstation, and intercollegiate athletics.

In 1999, the Oklahoma Legislature renamed the institu-tion Rogers State University and charged it with seekingaccreditation as a four-year university. Accreditation atthe baccalaurete level was granted in 2000.

Today, RSU is one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing univer-sities, offering a wide variety of bachelor's degree pro-grams to more than 4,400 students on campuses inClaremore, Bartlesville, and Pryor.

Academic DevelopmentThe Rogers State University Student-Athlete Academic Development (SAAD) program is designed to support Hillcat athletes asthey strive for success in the classroom and reach their educational and career goals. The program provides academic support suchas advisement, subject tutors, and learning groups for each RSU student-athlete.

Study sessions are designed specifically for each athletic program, and student-athletes are given the opportunity to work withtutors trained in their particular area of academic study. The goal of the SAAD program is to help all athletes grow into responsi-ble adults as they become upperclassmen and take initiative to be personally responsible for their education and their future.

The Student-Athlete Academic Development program, led by Dr. Brian Andrew, is there every step of the way for all athletes, toensure they are pursuing a degree that will support their personal goals and prepare them for life after college.

Hillcat LIFE ProgramsThe Hillcat LIFE programs are designed to promote student-athletes’ success off the field or court. Each year, RSU introduces a vari-ety of programs to enrich the college experience of its student-athletes, helping them avoid potential pitfalls and giving them infor-mation useful when making important life decisions. The following are some examples of Hillcat LIFE programs:

Etiquette training: Student-athletes are instructed on proper dining habits, dating manners, and courtesies. Each athlete is givena demonstration on the proper etiquette at formal meals.

Drug and Alcohol Counseling: Student-athletes are made aware of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. They are given exam-ples of athletes with promising futures who failed to reach their potential due to drug/alcohol abuse.

“It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time…” Seminar: This presentation attempts to enlighten student-athletes about the exist-ing legal realities associated with various acts they likely deem benign and provokes introspection that will lead to more carefuldecisionmaking.

Nutrition Counseling: A nutritionist meets with student-athletes to discuss healthy meal choices and life styles. Athletes are givenan overview of different types of foods and how they affect the human body.

RSU athletics continues to expand its programs in order toprovide a well-rounded education for all Hillcat athletes.

Champions of Character

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA)Champions of Character program is designed to instill anunderstanding of character values in sport, and provide prac-tical tools for student-athletes, coaches and parents to use inmodeling exemplary character traits.

Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Characterprogram addresses character issues more comprehensivelythan any other national program for youth. The program cur-rently reaches hundreds of thousands of students on nearly300 college and university campuses in North America andextends into their surrounding communities.

The NAIA has been informally teaching character develop-ment through athletics for decades. The core values ofrespect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership, andsportsmanship are addressed comprehensively in theChampions of Character program.

The NAIA Champions of Character program is an education-al outreach initiative that emphasizes the tenets of characterand integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but foryounger students, coaches, and parents in our communities.

Coaches, parents, administrators, and community partnersall have a role in developing students of character. The NAIAChampions of Character program brings them training, guidelines, and behavior models to create positive environ-ments that promote personal growth and fun sport activity.

In its sixth year of existence with a strong nucleus ofreturners and an impressive group of newcomers, theRogers State baseball team looks to meet high expecta-tions in 2011.

“For the most part, we are going to have our entire line-up coming back,” RSU Head Coach Ron Bradley said.“We are coming off a successful season and I feel like theexperienced returners know what to expect in our con-ference which will be an asset for this group.”

The Hillcats return 21 players from the 2010 squad, 15who saw significant action. RSU notched its second 30-win season in program history last spring. The DiamondCats finished the regular season in sixth place in theSooner Athletic Conference standings as they securedthe final spot in the conference tournament.

“With the veterans coming back and the recruiting classwe have brought in, we feel like this is the strongest clubthat we have ever had,” Bradley said. “On paper we areeven stronger than we were last year and we need to bein order to compete in the top tier of our conference.“

RETURNERSCoach Ron Bradley returns a strong group of veteranpitchers, who have worked productive innings on themound for the Hillcats.

“We have returned most of our pitching staff and theywill play a key role in our success,” Bradley said. “Weprobably have more depth than most pitching staffs andwere fortunate enough to get several quality arms.”

Senior Grant Cosby will anchor the Hillcats on themound. The senior led the team in strikeouts with 59and tied for the most wins with eight in 2010. He repre-sented the Diamond Cats on the all-conference firstteam after posting an 8-3 record.

“Cosby being able to get a medical redshirt was a hugebonus for us,” Bradley said. “Garner and Wenaas gave usa lot of quality innings while Jordan Clark led us inappearances. I’m looking forward to seeing what theseguys can do this season. They all had a great summerand good fall.”

Senior Tyler Garner started 15 games and tied a team-high with eight wins, pitching three complete games. Herecorded 58 strikeouts with a season-high nine strike-outs against Mid-America Christian on April 24. JacobWenaas collected three wins in 12 games while makingeight starts. “We have a good mix of left and right-handed pitchers,”Bradley said. “Drew Taylor and Casey Cassity are bothleft-handed returners who got a lot of quality innings.Frensly Martina pitched and hit for us last season. It’sgoing to be very competitive on the mound. I’m lookingforward to seeing who steps up and gets the job done.”

committed just one error. “Keith Poverud and KD (Kevin) Radford saw quality timein the outfield last season,” Bradley said. “KD is a lefthanded hitter who has good speed. He is a little bit moreexperienced than Keith, who is coming off his freshmanseason with some quality at-bats. Keith had a good falland I really expect him to have a chance to contributethis spring.”

Colton West and Jairo Valdez return to the diamond fortheir senior season. West was the Hillcats everyday thirdbaseman in 2010 as he started in 44 games. “Sample is touted as one of the top players in the coun-try and has been clocked at 96-97 miles per hour,”Bradley said. “He hasn’t pitched in a year so the questionis how consistent he is going to be and at what point ishe going to be 100 percent. Right now we feel like he isat 90 to 95 percent. We hope to see him excel this sea-son.”

Payden Yarmer signed withRogers State out of Paradise Valley Community College, where he helped lead them to a Junior College DivisionII World Series in 2010.

“We feel like every position player we brought in has anopportunity to compete for a starting spot,” Bradley said.“For the first time in my career I have four infielders whocan play all four positions. Cade McKewon is a localproduct from Inola. We were really glad to get him. Hecan play second or third base. The Campbell boys alongwith Payden Yarmer will bring power to the lineup andwill have an opportunity to hit in the middle of the order. All three players can play outfield and first base.”

Randy Ramirez is expected to take over at shortstop. Thejunior from Bronx, N.Y., comes to RSU from WesternOklahoma College. Last season, Ramirez hit .388 with 17doubles, four triples, eight home runs, 61 RBI and 25steals as he helped Western to its highest ranking of No.1, a regional and district championship, and a third placefinish in the World Series.

“Pencil in Randy Ramirez as our starting shortstop,” saidBradley. “Randy was the everyday starter at Western andhelped them get to the Junior College World Series thepast two years. He was probably our most consistentinfielder in the fall.”

SCHEDULERSU kicks off the 2011 campaign on Feb. 12-14 with asix-game road trip in Dallas, Texas featuring gamesagainst Dallas Christian College, Tabor College andHoward Payne University. The Diamond Cats open their30-game Sooner Athletic Conference slate on March 1 atOklahoma Christian. The Cats host Mid-America Christianin their conference home opener on March 3. WaylandBaptist and Lubbock Christian will co-host the SACTournament May 4-6.

“Our conference is tough from the top to bottom,”Bradley said. “LCU and OCU are the teams that everyoneis chasing. Their history and tradition have separatedthem nationally. Everyone is chasing those two and theyare not far behind. The gap has continued to close a lit-tle bit each year and it’s going to be very competitive.”

EXPECTATIONSRSU was tabbed seventh in the Sooner AthleticConference coaches’ poll. However, in their sixth seasonof baseball, the Cats look to turn heads in 2011. With agroup of experienced veterans and talented newcomers, the Hillcats have their sights set on a World Series berth.

“I feel we are better than the No. 7 ranking we receivedbut we are going to have to earn that recognition, it isnot given to us,” Bradley said. “The Sooner AthleticConference is rich in tradition and this club has the capa-bility to challenge the top teams in the SAC. We have theability to compete for a spot at the National Tournament.I would be disappointed if we didn’t win 35 or moregames.”

“I was looking for a university where I would be more than a face in the crowd. At Rogers State University, I’m a member of the Honors Program and the varsity cheerleading squad, all while pursuing my degree in medical/molecular biology. I don’t know for sure where I’ll be ten years from now but I do know I’ll be working in the medical !eld and my education will have prepared me to be successful. RSU has given me so many opportunities that I would not have gotten at other schools. For that, I’ll always be grateful.”

New Construction at the Hillcat Complex

These are exciting times on “The Hill” in Claremore. RSU isexperiencing unparalleled growth as one of Oklahoma'sfastest-growing universities while our emerging athleticprograms have enjoyed unprecedented success since theirinception in 2006. We believe that now is theoptimal time to begin a lasting partnership with RSU andHillcat Athletics.

Providing our student-athletes with elite-level playing andtraining facilities is among our highest priorities during thiscrucial stage in our development. The completed facility will serve as theregion's premiere multi-purpose athletic facility and affordRSU the opportunity to host multiple high-profile regionaland national sporting events each year.

Construction could start as early as Summer 2011. Formore information on this project call the RSU athleticoffice at (918) 343-7782.
