We find that bright children are rarely held backby mixed-ability teaching. On the contrary, boththeir knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming

pupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effecton both the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom ofthe top grade!

Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only oneaspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not

just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-abilityteaching contributes to all these aspects of learning.

In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups; this gives them theopportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to copewith personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and tocommunicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teachers.

Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, andthey can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We

encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do thiseffectively. An advanced pupil can do advanced work; it does not matter what age the child is. We expectour pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.

Experiments have shown that in selecting personnel for a job, interviewing is at best a hindrance, and may even cause harm. These studies have disclosed that the judgments of interviewers differ markedlyand bear little or no relationship to the adequacy of the job applicants. Of the many reasons why this should

be the case, three in particular stand out.The first reason is related to an error of judgment known as the halo effect. If a person has one

noticeable good trait, their other characteristics will be judged as better than they really are. Thus, anindividual who dresses smartly and show self-confidence is likely to be judged capable of doing a job wellregardless of his or her real ability.

Interviewers are also prejudiced by an effect called the primary effect. This error occurs wheninterpretation of later information is distorted by earlier connected information. Hence, in an interviewsituation, the interviewer spends most of the interview trying to confirm the impression given by thecandidate in the first few moments. Studies have repeatedly demonstrated that such an impression isunrelated to the aptitude of the applicant.

The phenomenon known as the contrast effect also skewsthe judgment of interviewers. A suitablecandidate may be underestimated because he or she contrasts with a previous one who appearsexceptionally intelligent. Likewise, an average candidate who is preceded by one who gives a weakshowing may be judged as more suitable than he or she really is.

Since interviews as a form of personnel selection have been shown to be inadequate, other selectionprocedures have been devised which more accurately predict candidate suitability. Of the various testsdevised, the predictor which appears to do this most successfully is cognitive ability as measured by avariety of verbal and spatial tests.
