ForewordMetaphor is a dynamic means of expression in traditional Chinese culture. Whether in poetry, music, or fi ne art, artists often choose to use metaphor, rather than other explicit means, to convey their messages. For example, the red bean in poetry indicates longing for a romantic interest. Similarly, in the fi ne arts, picturesque landscapes with fl owing rivers and majestic mountains represent pride in a homeland.

In this program, we use music to create metaphors for various topics in Chinese culture. We will focus on four primary themes:

Celebrations of ethnic traditions The contemplative scholar Longing for home The jealous lover

The concert will explore the true signifi cance of these four metaphors. Western and Chinese musical instruments (the piano, fl ute, voice, erhu, and pipa) will come together in the performance of traditional Chinese compositions. The musicians are professionally trained students, who have received instruction from the Jacobs School of Music, the Central Conservatory of Music in China, the Chinese Conservatory of Music, Xinghai Conservatory of Music, the Shanghai Conservatory of Music the Royal Academy of Music (London), and SUNY Fredonia.

Yulin Yu (喻宇琳), concert producer, is an undergraduate art history major earning departmental honors and is a member of the Hutton Honor College. She is working on research under the direction of Professor Phillip Bloom. She is also an IU Art Museum ambassador and special events organizer. She helped plan and host the Hutton Honors College mixer at a 2015 IU Art Museum Coff eehouse event and a Chinese art calligraphy showcase. A mezzo-soprano, she has been a soloist, chorus leader, and music critic, singing in student recitals at the Jacobs School of Music and at the HHart annual arts showcase produced by the Hutton Honors College and the Hudson & Holland Scholars Program. She won the gold medal in solo voice performance at the 6th National Youth Art Festival and on fl ute the silver medal in the Guangzhou Asian Game Opening Ceremony Orchestra Show. Last year, she became the judge of the voice competition hosted by IUCSSA (Indiana University Chinese Student and Scholar Association).

Ji Lu (卢骥), baritone, is studying for a performer diploma in the Jacobs School of Music with Professor Andreas Poulimenos. Lu earned his Master of Arts degree with Distinction at the Royal Academy of Music in London in 2014 and his bachelor of arts degree in Xinghai Conservatory of Music, Guangzhou, China, in 2012. In September 2011, Ji won the silver prize in opera arias at the Fifth National Higher Education Art Academies Vocal Music & Opera Competition. In July 2013, Lu gave a recital called “The Night of Yong’an” in Gulangyu Concert Hall, Xiamen, China. In November 2013, he played Le Surintendant des plaisirs in Massenet’s Cendrillon at the Royal Academy of Music to critical acclaim.

Xu(Ria) Wang (王旭), pipa, is a master student in arts administration in the School of Public and Environmental Aff airs. From Shanghai, she received her bachelor’s degree in music performance from Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, studying with the most famous pipa musician in China, Professor Zhang Giang, and is now a professional pipa player. Wang won the silver medal in the fi rst international folk instrument performance competition and received awards of excellent in the second “Bengbu” Cup Chinese musical instruments performance competition. She performed in the opening ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Xiao Li (李潇), soprano, graduated from Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in vocal performance. She is currently studying for a performer diploma with Professor Teresa Kubiak in the Jacobs School of Music. During her undergraduate studies Li performed in various large concerts in China, including in 2013 as a soloist at “The Immortal Verdi: The Concert in Commemoration of the 200th Anniversary of Verdi’s Birth”; in 2012 as the lead singer in the chorus for “The Concert in Commemoration of the 85th Anniversary of the Establishment of Shanghai Conservatory of Music”; in 2011 as a member of the chorus in the “Spring of Shanghai, The International Symphony Concert”; and in 2010 as a soloist in “Being with you, The Gala Performance of Shandong TV.”

PerformersWenPei Peng (彭雯培), fl ute, is a master’s student in the Jacobs School of Music, where she is studying fl ute performance with Professor Thomas Robertello. She won the Honor of Merit and a scholarship at the Central Conservatory of Music (China) before she came to IU. In China she performed at the 2013 Asia Flutists Federation China Trials and gave a special performance at the Central Conservatory of Music Asia Flute Festival.

BoCheng Peng (彭柏澄), rhu, is studying math and business at Indiana University Bloomington. Born in Changde, Hunan province, he began learning to play the erhu at the age of six and went on to study with Professor Zhao Hanyang at the Central Conservatory of Music and Professor Song Fei, the vice president of the China Conservatory of Music. Peng won fi rst prize at the National Youth Erhu and Guzheng Competition and the gold awards at the Dandelion Music Contest of Hunan province and the CCTV Competition. He is a member of the Erhu Association of Hunan Province.

Yong Zhang (张咏),piano, is a master’s student in the Jacobs School of Music, studying with Professor Karen Shaw. Prior to coming to IU, Zhang earned a bachelor’s degree at SUNY Fredonia as a student of Professor Phyllis East. Zhang won the Erie Music Teachers Association Scholarship Competition during her fi rst year in Fredonia and in spring 2012 she won the annual concerto competition and performed with the school’s orchestra during the following fall semester. Her solo recitals at Fredonia included a lecture recital that featured Chinese music. Zhang is also learning to play the organ.

ForewordMetaphor is a dynamic means of expression in traditional Chinese culture. Whether in poetry, music, or fi ne art, artists often choose to use metaphor, rather than other explicit means, to convey their messages. For example, the red bean in poetry indicates longing for a romantic interest. Similarly, in the fi ne arts, picturesque landscapes with fl owing rivers and majestic mountains represent pride in a homeland.

In this program, we use music to create metaphors for various topics in Chinese culture. We will focus on four primary themes:

Celebrations of ethnic traditions The contemplative scholar Longing for home The jealous lover

The concert will explore the true signifi cance of these four metaphors. Western and Chinese musical instruments (the piano, fl ute, voice, erhu, and pipa) will come together in the performance of traditional Chinese compositions. The musicians are professionally trained students, who have received instruction from the Jacobs School of Music, the Central Conservatory of Music in China, the Chinese Conservatory of Music, Xinghai Conservatory of Music, the Shanghai Conservatory of Music the Royal Academy of Music (London), and SUNY Fredonia.
