This is a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to determine how far individuals are distant from each other by using only Genomic information. Each different colour represents a different breed. The pink colour (circled by the blue line) is the grouping of the Boran breed. As you can observe, the Boran is distinctly different in terms of their genotypes compared to the other SA Studbook breeds’, participating in the Beef Genomic Project (BGP) until the 2015/2016 cycle.

Over this period we all once again experienced some extreme conditions and once again I can only say thank you that I farm with this amazing breed. We have all been tested to breaking point since January 2013 up until now. The last 4 months have been the best period we have had in 4 years. That does not mean the tough times are over yet so I hope we can all pull through the next year or two, or there might be an empty chair or 2 up here.
Enough of the doom and gloom. We kicked off 2016 with the tour of the eastern and western Cape and on all accounts was as usual a good tour filled with much laughter and some good cattle where viewed. After that we had another successful Royal Show with lots of interest and activity. As usual we held our Wednesday Club get together and braai which was well attended.
The Information day with students was cancelled due to protesting. That was after we had T-shirts printed. But they don’t go off so we will use them this year. Well, the year then slid very fast to Christmas and the New Year. The year got off to a rather stutter start with most of us wondering if the drought had really come to an end, then the Man who controls all, blessed most of the country with great rain.
Maize crops look good but maize price not so good. I think lots of farmers will put some of their maize through their cattle therefore I would imagine adding to the shortage of weaners, which are in short supply anyway so that hopefully will result in the weaner price staying hich.

Boran ClubOUT OF AFRICA!
Die Waterberg Boran Klub is die oudste klub in die land en is vanjaar 10 jaar oud ! Die klub se ledetal groei steeds en lede boer verspreid oor die hele Limpopo Provinsie. Die klub se hoof fokus is die aanbied van die jaarlikse Out of Africa veilings waar diere uit die strawwe bosveld hartwater area aangebied word. Ten spyte van die droogte en moeilike omstandighede in 2016 het die klub steeds twee suksesvolle veilings aangebied
in 2016. Met die goeie reën wat die die bosveld ontvang het kan ons met groot verwagting uitsien na die Out of Africa veilings op 22 April 2017 en 15 Oktober 2017.
Die jaarvergadering en afsluiting was op 3/12/16 gehou by Braam Dekker, naby Louis Trichardt en daar is lekker gekuier en beeste gekyk.

The Mpumalanga Boran Club (MBC) was established on 29 March 2016 during a meeting at The Bull Ring located on the Hurwitz Farm near Davel. The meeting, hosted by Hurwitz Farming was initiated by interested and motivated Mpumalanga-based Boran breeders who have long recognised the need for the establishment of
a MBC to foster and promote the breed in Mpumalanga, with the intention of substantially increasing the size of the provinces’s Boran herd. In addition, the club would encourage the etablishment of additional Boran studs, promote the use by commercial cattle farmers of Boran bulls in cross breeding programmes, and raise awareness of the fabulous traits of the breed, its heritage and suitability in all aspects of commercial beef farming.
The Boran has over the years proved itself as a breed that can compete against the other breeds in South Africa. With the diverse habitats in Mpumalanga (Highveld, Low-veld and Middle-veld) it is ideally suited for the area. We as a club can advise/provide farmers across Mpumalanga with information as to how they can utilise the Boran to improve their own herds and so build and grow the market for our cattle.
At this meeting, attended by some 35 interested participants, ably led by Buks van der Berg and Simeon Hurwitz and assisted and guided by Pieter Genis (Council member) and Mark Hansmeyer (KZN Club) it was determined that the Mpumalanga Boran Club would be established. The participants at the meeting, after some discussion elected a committee that would consist of: Buks van der Berg - Chairman, Hilton Philpot - Secretary and Jason Meadon, Martinus Botha, Hendy Hein Mathews, Paul Mouton, Berno van Niekerk and Sean de Villiers as additional members.
The committee held their inaugural Mpumalanga Boran Club committee meeting at Janvos Landgoed, who kindly provided their facilities for the use by the committee at a meeting held on 20 April 2016. Much animated discussion was held at the meeting and the following notable items are provided here for information:
1. Membership of the club will not initially be restricted to Boran breeders only, but the MBC would seek participation by commercial cattle farmers in general.
2. A Facebook page has been established (Mpumalanga Boran Club). Guidelines for the use of the page will be provided to members.
3. The Boran breed is to be promoted initially in several ways:a. Farmers Information Days Two farmers information days have been held to
date. One at Bothasberg Boerdery and one at Janvos Landgoed. Both these events have been highly successful and well attended. At these events (open to Boran breeders, commercial cattle farmers and other interested parties)
invited speakers (from SA Studbook, Veeplaas etc.) have provided participants (30 to 40 ) with informative and though provoking information on the breed and its performance.
The club believes that the inaugural farmers days have been very successful, and plans future events in other regions of Mpumalanga. The next event is planned for the Escarpment/Lowveld region and will probably be held near Lydenburg.
b. Participation by the MBC at provincial Boran and related sales;
c. Participation by the MBC at notable regional agricultural shows;
d. The MBC to cautiously reach out to neighbouring Swaziland and Mozambique.
The MBC has recognised the need for the training for potential Mpumalanga-based inspectors. Junior Inspectors courses are being planned to be held in the province, and these courses will be advertised.
The success of the club activities will reflect the participation and interest in the club by largely the province’s Boran breeders, local commercial cattle farmers and other interest and affected parties but will ultimately be measured by increased sales of Borans in the province. This is in everyone’s interest.

Die Kaap Boranklub het ‘n baie geslaagde veiling gehou op die 19de November 2016, wat deur 120 mense bygewoon is.
Dit was ons eerste volwaardige veiling en slegs SP diere is verkoop. Die veiling het plaasgevind op Hennie Raal se plaas
te Rietvlei, Mosselbaai. Daar was twee verse wat vir R160 000 elk op die veiling verkoop is. Die gemiddeld van die veiling was baie hoog. Baie dankie aan al die kopers wat van veraf gekom het om ons te ondersteun.
Dit is ook met groot hartseer dat ons aan die begin van Januarie moes afkeid neem van Hennie. Hy het werklik baie gedoen om die veiling ‘n sukses te maak.
Hierdie jaar gaan ons weer ‘n “prestige” veiling hou, wat sal plaasvind op Saterdag, 18 November 2017, te Rietvlei, Mosselbaai. Net uitstaande diere gaan aangebied word. Ons gaan hierdie jaar weer uitstal by die Megaweek te Bredasdorp. Hoop om jul almal daar te sien. Onthou die datum: Saterdag 18 November 2017. Boran groeteChristo Crafford
KAAPBoran Klub
2016 was ‘n jaar wat vir meeste boere begin het met geen reën, maar deur dit het die Boran homself bewys as een van die gehardste rasse in SA. Dit was ook ‘n uitblinkjaar vir die klublede. In die 7de bestaansjaar as klub, is daar 38 lede wat elk ‘n bydrae lewer om die ras ‘n sukses te
maak. Die jaar is weereens afgeskop met n suksesvolle Expo waar baie geleer is van die Boran en hoe individuele telers dink en boer in hul eie stoete. Dankie aan Paul Pienaar en Burnie Staal vir die moeite wat julle ingesit het. By die 2016 toekennings op die Boran Dinee, het ons lede uitgeblink as al drie die stoettrofee wenners, asook ‘n tweede plek. Bloodline Boran het ‘n Elite Platinum toekenning ontvang as 2016 se Vrystaat streekswenner van SA Stamboek se stoet toekennings vir alle rasse. Ander toekennings was Vastrap Boran met ‘n Elite Goud toekenning, Letselaskraal, sowel as Tambaraine Boran met ‘n Elite Silwer toekenning en Palmyra Boran met ‘n Elite Brons toekenning. Welgedaan, ons is trots op julle!
Op 22 Oktober is ons klubveiling gehou. Die kwaliteit van die diere was sekerlik die beste nog en dit het tot gevolg gehad dat nie een dier uit-“gescreen” was nie. Die hoogste prys dier was vir R80 000 verkoop aan B Hurwitz Farming. Baie geluk aan die verkoper
A.F. Meyer. Ons as klub het die voorreg gehad om Joost vd Westhuisen saam met ons daar te kon hê en kon daar in slaag om vir hom R99 000 in te samel. Baie dankie aan almal wat skenkings gemaak het. Daar is ook ‘n nuwe Klubkomitee verkies met Anton Lombard as Voorsitter en Thinus Bessinger as Onder Voorsitter. Die ander komiteelede is Adriaan Lamprecht, Werner Steinhobel en Zippo Lamprecht. Martin Van Rooyen (Rasbestuurder) en Pieter Genis(Klub Portefeulje) dien
ook op die komitee. Wat beplan ons vir 2017? Ons Bloemskou stalletjie het al ‘n tradisie
geword waar ons telers die ras bemark. Daar word ‘n toer beplan waar telers in ‘n ander provinsie besoek sal word om hulle manier van boer met die Boran te
ervaar. Die volgende Klubveiling sal plaasvind op Saterdag 21 Oktober,
2017. Ons strewe sal weereens wees om top kwaliteit diere aan te bied. Daar word ook ‘n
groter Expo beplan nader aan die veilingstyd op die Bloemfontein Skougronde. Laastens word ‘n Junior kursus beplan om meer keurders te bemagtig en in die veld te kry. Ek sluit af deur almal weerneens te bedank vir hul betrokkentheid by die Klub. Sterkte met 2017 wat voorlê. Ons sien daarna uit om u op bogenoemde geleenthede te sien.
