Exhibitions and New Learning Opportunities…2014

Dylan’s Swansea will open on February 21st. An exhibition which celebrates the Swansea that Dylan knew, where he was born, grew up, worked and played and how it influenced him. Featuring Wyn Thomas’ wonderful illustrations of some of Dylan’s haunts around the town itself, Uplands, Mumbles and Gower. Also, there will be a series of workshops and events to support the exhibition.

The Developing Dylan one hour creative writing workshops are Dylan Thomas themed writing

workshops for Key Stages 2, 3 and 4. They are available to schools throughout Wales in Welsh and in English by a team of 32 trained writers. This team of writers includes - Dan Anthony, author of Rugby Zombies and Tracey Beaker, Jemma L King, Dylan Thomas Prize short list nominee, and Cynan Jones, 2013 Sunday Times EFG Private Bank Short Story Award short list nominee. After one of the first workshops that took place in October, a teacher said: 'This workshop provided that vital springboard into creative thinking so crucial in enthusing our students’. Devised by Canolfan Peniarth, the workshops reflect current curriculum requirements in Wales, including those of the National Literacy and Numeracy Framework. Each workshop is specifically tailored to the relevant Key Stage, ensuring proper provision for differentiated learning and allowing children and young people the freedom to explore. Interactive resources used by the writers delivering the workshops focus mainly on ‘A Child’s Christmas in Wales’ for the Key Stage 2 workshop, ‘Fern Hill’ for the Key Stage 3 workshop and ‘Do not go gentle into that good night’ for the Key Stage 4 workshop. The Key Stage 4 / post-14 workshop is specifically linked to GCSE Welsh / English Literature course requirements for creative writing. A teaching pack containing these interactive resources will be given to each school following the workshop. The workshops are available to book through our online booking form on our website, www.developingdylan100.com. The other workshops that we have available is the cross art form workshops. These are available to 35 schools based in Wales on the basis of their involvement with either / both disaffected and disadvantaged young people. There are some workshops still available and they are free of charge. The Developing Dylan cross art-form workshops are intended for disaffected and disadvantaged young people aged 11-16 (Key Stages 3 & 4). Each workshop is run by a team of two different

visual artists, musicians, performance poets and an actor, comprising a team of fourteen Welsh and Wales-based artists. The team of artists include – Huw Aaron, whose cartoons regularly tickle the pages of Private Eye and Reader’s Digest, Martin Daws, an electrifying poet whose also the current Young People’s Laureate of Wales and Rufus Mufasa, bilingual rapper, MC, singer songwriter, spoken word poet, comedy writer and performer. The team of artists vary, making the content of each workshop and the work produced by the pupils original and unique. Dylan Thomas’ themes and texts are used as a starting point. The pupils then engage with these through media of self-expression including visual art, creative writing, voice recording, music and animation, depending on the team leading the workshop. The cross art-from workshops are closed sessions and are available free of charge for a limited amount of pre-selected schools throughout the 2013/2014 academic year. World War 1 will open on July 22nd. The 28th July 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the start of one of the most catastrophic wars in European history. An exhibition to commemorate the anniversary of this conflict. Over 60 million people were mobilised for the armed forces alone. Young men signed up to serve in their thousands from all over Britain including, of course, Swansea and South Wales. Many of those who signed up never came home and those who did were often greatly affected by the events they witnessed. The exhibition will focus on the stories of several Swansea individuals who were involved in the Great War. As well as the stories of the young men who left their homes to fight the exhibition will also reveal the struggles faced by women who worked in military hospitals and those who conscientiously objected.

Topic: Electricity and before A session that looks at homes and daily life, and the changes in these over the last 150 years. An active, taught session, using a lot of handling objects from today and the past and studying the differences. Come and see a ‘Magic Lantern’ at work! Pupils will have the opportunity to study and handle objects such as toasting forks and ‘slug’ irons. The children may follow-up by visiting the ‘Welsh Kitchen’, on the first floor of the museum.

Topic: Mrs. Mahoney Mrs Mahoney was the wife of the museum caretaker in the 1850s. He was sacked for embezzling money, and Mrs. Mahoney will narrate her sad story in costume and character, showing the children the trunk of things she is taking with her which show the difference between her way of life and theirs. Suggested age group: Yr 2 only, unless it is a mixed class Duration: 1 hour Please contact as soon as possible to book a place.

Topic: Transport Tours A chance for schools to get a “behind the scenes” visit to the Swansea Museums Service Store, which is a very big warehouse near the Park & Ride car park at Landore. The children will be given a tour of the vehicles looking at changes and differences between them. On display we have an Allis Chalmers tractor, motorbikes, the gambo farm cart, the Vulcan and AEC lorries, the Sinclair C5, the horse drawn fire engine, the traction engine, the Llynfi bus, the Swansea Harbour inspection coach, etc. This will take about an hour and there can be another half hour for drawing if you wish. Please note: the building is a store, not a museum, so the children will be kept to the area where the vehicles are, and there will be no lunch space. Suggested age group: Rec – Yr 2 Duration: 1 hour

Topic: Toys This is a taught hour session with dolls, clockwork toys, colourful tin-plate toys, money boxes, wooden toys, spinning tops and outdoor games. Themes such as materials, power and decoration are explored. Come and meet a 1980s hulk and his friends! Lots of fun whilst learning about old toys. If you would like an opportunity for drawing afterward just let us know. A ‘Toys’ pack is available to complement a visit, price £9.95 Suggested age group: Rec – Yr 2 Duration: 1 hour

Topic: ‘Off to the Seaside!’ This has been one of our most popular sessions over recent years – this year we’re adding something special… The children will sit in the tram and meet a lady from about 1900, who will tell them stories about going to the seaside, and how people got there, especially on the Mumbles Train. Time allowing there will be a chance to make a story of their own, and investigate “object bags” of beach related materials, get on the Mumbles tramcar, look at the pictures on display and do some drawing... Topic: Victorians The Museum’s Victorian displays are fully available. Topic: Copperopolis and The Lower Swansea Valley Pupils often know the Enterprise Park B&Q, Morrisons, the Liberty Stadium, and the Marina. In exactly this area were the industries which grew up from 1700s and transformed society during the 19th century. What happened in Swansea and Wales was just as important as the textile inventions of Northern England. Copper and tinplate in this area were as important as Merthyr iron and Rhondda coal. There are still sites to visit with evidence of this past industry and resources to compliment such fieldwork. As the story unfolds, change follows change, and their causes and consequences can be seen at quite a simple level. A visit involves a slide talk in the museum and a exploration of our brilliant Copperopolis exhibition A few objects will also be examined, all as an introduction to a visit to the White Rock Works site. Suggested age group: Yr 5 and older Duration: approx 2 hours (inc. site visit)

Topic: The Romans… and some Celts A full day with many activities including the chance to try on costumes, replica Roman & Celtic shields as well as armour. Visiting groups can meet a Roman character and find out what their life was like in Romano-Celtic Britain. The children will have a chance to work out where some Roman objects have been found and to get a closer look at them in the Archaeology Gallery. At the end of the day there will be a slide show talk which will bring together elements and themes of the day. Suggested year group: Yr 3 / 4 / 5 Duration: Full-day (10am - 2.30pm)

Topic: Ancient Egypt Swansea Museum houses a 2,200 year old Mummy which is on display. We also have many pieces of Egyptian pottery, glass, an ancient vanity mirror and even a mummified duck! Combine your visit with a trip to the Egypt Centre in Swansea University for an excellent and full day out. There is Gallery work and a slideshow. If you are planning a visit to the Egypt Centre we may have space for your group to have lunch. Please let us know if you require this when booking. Suggested year group: Yr 3 / 4 Duration: Half-day

Topic: Swansea at War

Working with lots of artefacts from World War Two, war time paintings of the town centre by Will Evans, evacuees’ suitcases to investigate, posters and photographs, a walk around the town (if wanted). There is a slide talk covering many wartime themes, investigating how Swansea came to be bombed and the effects the attacks had on the old town centre and its people. I can also arrange for your group to meet someone who lived through Swansea in the war years. If you would like this option just let me know at time of booking. Suggested age group: Year 5 - 6 Duration: Full-day (10am - 2.00pm)

The Mumbles Railway

The Tramway Centre has a street tram and a Mumbles train cab (both electric) and a replica 1807 horsedrawn tram, together with displays on the Mumbles train (with video), Swansea trams and the Constitution Hill tramway of 1898. For a transport theme, this shows, for example the change from horses to steam and then electricity, and finally from rail to road. A slide show talk , worksheets (also a DVD @ £8.99) are possible - please contact museum for details. Suggested age group: Yr 3 and older Duration: Half-day

Topic: The Maritime Quarter The Maritime Quarter changed from a windswept stretch of dunes to Swansea's posh quarter from the 1780s, to a busy dockland vicinity from 1859, to a derelict waste after 1970. Today it is an area of housing and leisure use. Schools study this an example of change, partly history, but also a fascinating way into land use in geography. A slide-talk and a range of worksheets (buildings, sculpture, land use, maritime aspects) available. There are also a range of Swansea landscape paintings on display. A profitable field visit studying local changes during the 19th Century. Suggested age group: Yr 3 and older Duration: Half-day

Topic: Alice Francis Alice Francis was a real person, living in Victorian Swansea, and recorded on the 1851 census. She would have lived through many of the changes in 19th Century Swansea. She lived in Morris Lane, nowadays renamed Kings Lane, and running from opposite a pub called the Kings Arms in High Street, Swansea down to Parc Tawe. We have pretended she is the woman shown in paintings we have in the museum by William Butler, dated 1850-1, and showing Morris Lane and nearby Castle Lane. There are resources including a short DVD for use before and after the visit.

The day in the museum involves two inputs in the morning from Val (Chance Encounters Theatre) one as Alice in costume and character, one discussing with the children how she researched the part. In the afternoon the pupils explore sources – objects, paintings, photographs, etc., in the galleries, out of cases, and through a slidetalk, etc.

Topic: Copperopolis Spend a day at the museum finding out about changes to life in 19th century Swansea. You will have the chance to meet …John Jones ‘The Copperman’ Find out about his life and how it changed during Victorian times. There will also be a chance to explore our fascinating exhibition ‘Copperopolis’, which tells the story of Swansea and how it became the world capital of copper production. There will also be a chance to examine a number of sources from fine landscape paintings to handling objects. Suggested age group: Yr 5 - 6 Duration: Full-day (10am - 2.15pm)

Extra Options… If you are planning to take two classes on the Swansea Community Boat why not visit Swansea Museum as part of your day. One class can sail on the boat in the morning while the other class explores our handling boxes in the Copper exhibition Gallery. Swap around in the afternoon. All workshops are free to 4site members. Non-members will be charged £35 per workshop plus class admission. Tours/Workshops are restricted to one class of a maximum of 35 pupils at a time. Guided Tours 10.30am - 11.15am Tours are conducted by the staff who know the hothouse and its plants so well. Tours can be slanted towards particular themes and may be adapted for all age groups.

Animal Guided Tours 10.30am - 11.15am Conducted by our resident animal technicians on the animals/insects that are housed here, these sessions will look at what they eat, how they are looked after and many other interesting facts.

Arts & Plants 10am – 12noon & 12.30pm - 2.30pm (1 ½ hrs for reception) These practical art sessions, using the wonderful plants as inspiration, involve observational drawings focusing on shape, pattern and texture. They are half day sessions and can be linked with a gallery or museum visit.

Felt Making 10.30am - 12noon & 12.30pm - 2pm Felting is a fairly simple process using wool without weaving or knitting. It lends itself superbly to coloured wall displays and felt panels can be abstract or pictorial.

Paper Making 10.30am - 11.15am There will be a one week block of practical papermaking sessions where each child will make their own paper to take away with them.

Arts & Animals 10am-12noon & 12.30pm-2.30pm Draw and make your own moveable animals with card, inspired by the real animals at Plantasia. Suitable for Yr1 onwards.

Rainforest Workshops 10.30am - 11.15am (English only) Based on our Education Officer’s trip to the Amazon rainforest using her experience, slides and artefacts of Ecuador. The content will range from the plants, animals

and people of this amazing region to the huge environmental issues that arise from its exploitation. Suitable for Yr 2 onwards.

Easy Peasy Seed Germination 10.30am - 12noon or 12.30pm - 2pm What does a seed need to grow? The children will set up a scientific investigation to answer this question by planting pea seeds in Petri dishes in a variety of conditions. The children will measure the results, analyse the data and draw conclusions from the experiment. This session also looks at the needs of green plants which teachers can reinforce by taking the children into the hothouse. Suitable for Yr 2 onwards.

Roots, shoots, flowers and leaves 10.30am - 12noon or 12.30pm - 2pm Children will never forget the parts of the plants after discovering them inside the tropical hothouse. As well as focusing on the functions of the plant parts, the tutor will ask the children to identify how different species have adapted and consider the role of plants in their ecosystem. The workshop ends with a fun activity in which the children become roots and shoots themselves and work together to find food and water for their plant. Suitable for KS1 & 2

Poetry at Plantasia 10.30am - 11.45am or 1pm - 2.15pm (English only) To begin, the children and the tutor will read and discuss traditional poetry that has been written about plants and animals. The children will then go into the hothouse to be stimulated and inspired to write a formal rhyming couplet. There will be a short discussion about their couplets, in which the children will learn the importance of constructive feedback and drafting in the writing process. The rest of the workshop will focus on modern poetry, specifically “cut-up” style poems. The children will seek out the wide range of words (and definitions) that have been hidden in the hothouse and use them to construct abstract poems. Suitable for KS2.

The Glynn Vivian Art Gallery is currently closed for a major redevelopment project to help maintain the infrastructure of the original 1911 building and to improve public access for all. This exciting project is very extensive and the Gallery will be closed fully to the public in the interim. Further information is available on our website www.glynnviviangallery.org During the coming year, the Glynn Vivian Learning team will continue to deliver an offsite programme of full and half day workshops to take place within schools.

Glynn Vivian Away Days Glynn Vivian Away Days provides an opportunity for a class to work in school with their teacher and engage in activities that will explore the Gallery and its collection. One of our team of art educators will visit the school with specially selected resources and materials for an exciting day of activities.

Primary Schools Our working artists and experienced art educators are well-versed and practiced in the demands of Art and Design within the National Curriculum and are able to offer full education programmes. Each organised workshop visit is designed to give a balance of Creative Development within the Foundation Phase and Understanding, Investigating and Making into Key Stage 2. We are also able within a workshop visit, to satisfy some of the demands of the Curriculum Cymreig through the increased understanding of the work of the artists of Wales. Workshop Introduction Our art educator will begin the day with an introduction to the history of the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Richard Glynn Vivian and his original bequest to the people of Swansea, which he collected on his worldwide travels in the 19th Century. The pupils will learn about the Gallery, the architecture of the building and discuss how it has changed since it opened one hundred years ago in 1911. The art educators will also talk about the need for refurbishment and development of the building and how this will improve the Gallery for future research facilities, storage and visitor experience. Images will be available to illustrate the packing process and changes, and to stimulate discussion and response, including slides taken from Richard Glynn Vivian’s travel albums. Collection Explored The art educators will show a selection of images from the gallery’s collection which will include reproductions of contemporary and historical works. These will be based around the themes below and will be available for projection and as reproduction prints. Practical Response Following a broad discussion about each of the selected reproductions from the Gallery’s collection, the art educators will then use their vast knowledge and experience to tailor a day’s practical session from the class response. Pupils may create a piece of artwork either individually or collectively. All relevant materials will be provided by the Gallery and our artist educators will bring the materials with them to the school on the day of the workshop. The available themes and materials are listed below and teachers can select any theme and any material they wish for example; Colour and Printmaking.

NEW for 2014 New programme for Secondary Schools Artist Visits & Artist Tutorials Glynn Vivian Art Gallery is launching a new dedicated 4Site Secondary School programme in January - April 2014. This programme will provide pupils and teachers with an informal and exciting introduction to our city art gallery. Whether it’s the contemporary or historical exhibitions we present, the collection we look after, or the history of the Gallery and its founder, Richard Glynn Vivian, we want to share our story with the next generation of artists and makers, and inspire a new Glynn Vivian audience. The initial Artist Visit will prepare the way for our more advanced Artist Tutorials which can only be booked after the introductory Artist Visit. Artist Visits Spring term 2014 The introductory phase of the programme will begin with Artist Visits which will be available on Tuesdays in the Spring term, from Tuesday 7 January to Tuesday 15 April 2014. Our Glynn Vivian Learning team will deliver a short presentation about the Gallery, its collection and current programmes, and demonstrate the variety of work that takes place - from exhibitions and events to conservation and archives. This will be followed by an open Q&A session where pupils and teachers will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss their experiences. Following the Artist Visits, there will be an opportunity to move on to the more advanced stage with Artist Tutorials which will be available in the Summer term from Tuesday 6 May – Friday 11 July, 2014.

Artist Tutorials Summer term 2014 In May - June 2014, we will be offering the opportunity for your pupils to meet and discuss their work with our artist educator team, to support their existing work in class and for the Gallery to share its expertise and skills. This will be a chance for us to gauge what we can offer to complement the excellent work already delivered in the art departments in schools in these areas, and increase awareness of the varied opportunities we can provide whilst we are offsite and when we reopen again. We hope that this invaluable experience is something you will consider for your pupils, and look forward to working with you in the near future.

Booking The Gallery is now taking bookings for the 4-Site Education Service available during the Spring Term 2014. Primary Schools Full and half day workshops will be available from Monday 6 January until Friday 11 April 2014.

Workshops will be available Monday – Friday and artists will be at the school from 9.30am – 3pm and will adjust according to the break times, which may vary from school to school. Artist educators will prepare for the entire time they are at the school, therefore teachers will be asked when booking to ensure that the class has no other commitments at the time of the artist workshop, such as sports or other class activity and that the teacher remains with the class for the duration of the visit. Secondary Schools Artist Visits will be available on Tuesdays only, from Tuesday 7 January to Tuesday 15 April 2014. Artist Visits will take place at the school during a lesson, and will last approximately one hour, and can be tailored to suit the needs of your class. The Dylan Thomas Centre can offer workshops for two age groups. 8 – 11 year olds A basic introduction to the life and work of Dylan Thomas, looking in particular at the poems and stories he wrote about his childhood. The session includes a guided tour of the Dylan Thomas Centre’s Man and Myth exhibition, with a special quiz sheet to help youngsters explore the exhibit.

11 - 18 year olds The Dylan Thomas Centre offers in-depth sessions on the life and work of Swansea’s most famous son, which can be tailored to the needs of each group. Primary Schools General information..

Archives in schools Archives are a great

educational resource which

offer students and teachers a

hands on experience with

unique primary sources. They can capture pupils' imaginations because they contain local information that children can relate to. Give pupils the experience of using primary sources, let them explore information contained in interesting and unusual formats, let them conduct their own research and

evaluate the resources.

We offer a number of free

services to schools in

Swansea and Neath Port

Talbot.

Visit us in the Searchroom Pupils and teachers are invited to visit the Archive Service in Swansea.

We can take groups of any age to work on selected original records. Due to restricted space numbers must be limited to a maximum of 30.

Searchroom sessions are available only on Mondays, when we are closed to the general public.

A visit to your school Alternatively we can offer the same sessions at your school using facsimile documents.

Resource pack Locality Study Resource Packs can be tailor made to suit your school. Each pack will include all or some of the following documents: maps, census, trade directories, parish records, newspapers, oral histories, school records and photographs. Locality Study Resource Packs cost £10.00 and should be ordered one term in

advance.

Foundation Phase Picture bank..

Project outline The Archive Service has put together an image bank of old local photographs. These can be viewed and downloaded by teachers for use in the classroom. The resource is aimed at the Foundation Phase and is based on the following topics:

Each themed resource also includes teachers' notes, timelines and suggested activities along with a description of the image.

Key Stage 2 Rich and Poor Victorians..

Topic outline A comparison between rich and poor Victorians focusing on a Swansea or Neath slum and Margam Park (home of the Talbot family). Pupils use the following sources to draw comparisons between the lives of rich and poor Victorians: maps, plans, census, photographs of people and homes and newspapers.

Range The focus of this topic is on the

characteristics of daily life during the

Victorian era.

The key questions are: • What was life like for rich and poor

people during the Victorian era? Learners get the opportunity to discuss houses and homes, clothes, living conditions and occupations.

• How have the daily lives of people in the Victorian era been represented and interpreted and why? Learners have the opportunity to look at a variety of records and discuss the ways in which the rich and poor have been represented.

Key Stage 2 Tudors at home and at work..

Topic outline Groups will get the chance to study original Tudor documents including wills and apprenticeship indentures to give an insight into the lives people living and working in Swansea during Tudor times. Pupils will have the opportunity to discover what belongings people had, as well as looking at the pros and cons of being an apprentice during the reign of Henry VIII (Lord Sugar watch out!). The session will end with pupils making their own apprenticeship indentures and seals.

Range The focus of this topic is on the characteristics

of daily life during the Tudor era.

The key questions are: • What was life like for people during

the Tudor era? Learners get the opportunity to discuss houses and homes and occupations.

• How have the daily lives of people in the Tudor era been represented and interpreted and why? Learners have the opportunity to look at a variety of records and discuss the ways in which people during the Tudor era have been represented.

Key Stage 2 Three Nights’ Blitz..

Topic outline Pupils are invited to step back in time and visit our mock War Operations Room. Using a Luftwaffe plan of Swansea, aerial photographs, evacuee records, ARP and Home Guard diaries; pupils will help to create a strategic escape plan and set up defences along Swansea Bay.

Next we will be transported to the last night of the Three Nights’ Blitz; pupils will use Auxiliary Fire Service records and list of air raids to plot the main areas affected by the blitz, as well as decide where to send fire crews, the Home Guard and the injured.

Finally using photographs of Blitzed Swansea to show the devastation of the town, lists of wounded and civilian dead pupils will decide how to identify the injured and dead and where to bury them.

Range The focus of this topic is on the characteristics

of daily life during the Three Nights’ Blitz.

The key questions are: • What do you know about life during the Three Nights’ Blitz; how do you know this and how can you find out more?

• What was life like for men, women and children during the Three Nights’ Blitz?

• Were there significant changes in people’s lives at this time, why?

• How have the daily lives of people during the Three Nights’ Blitz been represented and interpreted and why?

Key Stage 2 Archives behind the scenes..

Topic outline A chance to visit the archives and see behind the scenes! Groups will be taken on a tour of the archive strongrooms, see the biggest, smallest, oldest and newest documents as well as finding out more about a day in the life of an archivist. Groups will also be given the opportunity for a hands-on experience in helping to preserve documents.

This topic can be used as an introduction to setting up your own school/class archive. Pupils will be shown how to identify archives as well as how to catalogue, describe and number them.

Where to find us The West Glamorgan Archive Service is based at Civic Centre, Oystermouth Road, Swansea.

Facilities Parking for coaches is limited. Most groups are dropped off at the bottom of the slope leading up to the main entrance. Public toilets (including a toilet for wheelchair users) are off the main foyer. There is a Coastline café in the Civic Centre foyer, where you can buy snacks and drinks. Alternatively groups can have lunch on the beach if the weather is nice.

Central Library runs a variety of school visit programmes. School visits provide a great opportunity for Primary Schools to introduce its pupils to the basics of using library services for researching school projects as well as reading for pleasure. Friendly staff will be on hand to guide, encourage, and educate the children on library resources and features of Central library.

Children will be; • shown how to join, • given a tour of the library ground floor and children’s area, • shown how to use specialist resources, if necessary • read a story (for Reception – Yr.2) Children can also be shown how to use free electronic subscriptions to library specific material such as the Encyclopaedia Britannica Online. Many of these resources can then be used freely at home once the child is a registered library customer. *Each session will last 1 ½ hours and can be tailored to an individual school project if requested. Swansea and the War...60 years on

A collection of booklets with local memories, including extracts from the...”Diary of Laurie Latchford, 1940-41” He was an air raid warden, and describes graphically the Swansea blitz, but is also very good on the nature of life at the time. The memories of Elaine Kidwell, entitled…“From Air Raid Warden to Land Girl”. At 17 she had claims to be the youngest warden in Britain. She describes the raids with great feeling, but then goes on to her time in the Land Army near Haverfordwest.

The last booklet, 16 pages, is…“The Memories of Mike Lewis-A Port Tennant boy at war”. Mike was evacuated to Ystradgynlais, and describes his time there, and his home life, with great verve. Also included is an information sheet on the wartime gun batteries at Mumbles and a copy of a contemporary painting of Swansea burning on 21st February, 1941, with the memories of the artist when he was in the Home Guard.
