The MUSIC FOR BEGINNERS series

Music for Beginners was launched 46 years ago
in the summer of 1969. The aim was to compile avaried and
high-standard repertoire covering musicfrom the earliest centuries
to contemporary com-positions for music school students to be
played inthe first 3-4 years of instrument learning. The serieshas
proved extremely successful as is indicated bythe fact that 55
volumes have been published. Thepopularity of Music for Beginners
has not dimin-ished in recent years, and there is demand forthe
majority of volumes in Hungary and abroad.
The secret of the series’ success lies primarily inthe selection
of compositions. The contents of allvolumes have been compiled by
accomplishedmusic teachers choosing high-standard worksthat can
easily be played by the given instrument.Outstanding Hungarian
composers have also beenasked to write new pieces.
The volumes in the Music for Beginners series
currently include all the instruments taught in musicschools.
Moreover, they have been published forvarious chamber music
settings as well. The valueof the series is increased by the
unique, attractiveillustrations of János Kass. They not only appear
onthe volume covers but are sometimes also featuredin the
scores.
The renewal of Music for Beginners started on
the occasion of the series’ 45th birthday. Yet onlythe
appearance is changing, not the contents. Thevolumes are receiving
new covers preserving JánosKass’ drawings. Within the series three
groups havebeen formed that are differentiated by the color ofthe
covers: volumes for solo instruments (with orwithout piano
accompaniment) are RED, those forduos of the same instruments are
GREEN, and BLUE signifies chamber music for different
instruments.Certain volume titles have also been changed so
that they reflect the multiple scoring options of thepieces
included. On the following pages all scoringoptions are indicated
for each volume.
With the renewal of the series we would also like topoint out
that Music for Beginners can be effectivelyused not only in
teaching instruments but in chambermusic education as well.
Additionally, most of thevolumes are perfect for at-home music
making.
