Data Communication is the handling and transmission of digital data over communication channels between computers and/or other devices (in general over the great distance)

These 2 aspects must be included:

 Computer networks

 How the computers are connected?

Which media can be use to transmit the data?

How can I rule the access of the transmitting media?

 Protocols

How the data exchange can be done uniformly?

How can we achieve the realizable and effective transmission?

Fundamental terms – Circuit Switching (conventional telephony)

 Throughout connection between participants

Exclusive connection use for two partners

Receiver must accept the messages immediately

Network can’t buffer, delay or recode

Gauranteed bandwidth and constant signal runtime

But: line is occupied, even if there is nothing to be transmitted

 Example: telephone network

Fundamental terms – Packet Switching (message switching)

Messages will be cut into fixed-size packets

Packets will be transmitted to the node computers, buffered there and go on transmission over other nodes

Physical circuit connection only exists between nodes

Transfer rates can be various on the way

Gauranteed bandwidth and constant signal runtime are possible but not always implemented

Example: switched LAN, X.25, Frame Relay, ATM, IP-Switching
