Día de los Muertos

Día de los Muertos“ Hey mom Alex and I are having a party at school tomorrow, for the Day of the Dead. We have to bring something with us for a snack.”

Día de los Muertos“ Sure honey,” mom said. “What would you like to bring?” Maria said, “I want to bring  some candy skulls or pan de muertos with the little candy skulls in them.”

We are also going to make an alter for the dead to see and come and enjoy the fiesta with us.

We love to use marigolds in our alters.

Every year the monarch butterflies come which are a symbol of all the little kids that have died.

Alex and Maria are so excited for the party tomorrow! They get to dress up in costumes and eat all kinds of the yummy treats.

Día de los Muertos“ This is my  favorite holiday of the year,” says Mother. “ It is our  favorite too. We get to have  all different kinds of food especially mole. We love the way it smells with the chocolate and the chilies. “

“I’m  so excited to celebrate the Day of the Dead,” said Maria . “Our teacher said we would play games to celebrate and listen to lots of music, like you did when you were a kid.”

“ I heard people in Mexico actually gather at the cemetery to celebrate, do they really do that?”, said Alex. “Yes they do!” mom replied. “ Families often go to cemeteries to fix up the graves of their relatives who have died.” “Just like we are going to do tomorrow,” said Maria.

“The families gather around and make a big celebration out of it! They bring lots of food to share with all of the other families to celebrate the death of their loved ones!” said mom.

“That’s very different from us.” said the little girl. “People in America get very sad when people close to us die, not celebrate it.”

“Yes, they do have a different view then us! But we better get baking or it won’t be done in time for Día de los Muertostomorrow!”replied mom.

“Rapido, Rapido, Rapido!”,

said Alex.

The 3 of them got to work and finally after 2 long hours they finished all of the candy skulls and the pan de muertos. The kids were so tired that they both fell asleep trying to help mom clean up. So mom took them and put them both to bed.

All the kids could dream about was the party they were going to have in the morning. Six o’clock came, the children got up and yelled excitedly, “Fiesta, fiesta, fiesta!” and off to school they went.

All of the kids were dressed in their costumes and had there food to share with their classmates. They all celebrated the day of the dead till it was time to go back home. “Adios!” all of the classmates said. They were all sad that Día de los Muertos had to come to an end.

“I hope we celebrate this every year!” said Alex. “Me too, it was even more fun than Halloween has been,” replied Maria.
