Sue Says… “Be Warned”
Howdy all; I’m in a sloppy and philosophical kind of
mood as I’m writing this so be warned!
Was sitting at my desk paying bills again this morning and my
thoughts began to wander. I was getting a bit overwhelmed with all of the
paperwork and administrative duties that are required, and began thinking
about all it takes to make this business run smoothly. I had also been looking
for some inspiration for my column this month and all I had to do was take my
eyes off the computer and look out the window.
I had just paid a bill for a couple of new stack dryers we ordered and
looked out to see Bill Prahler working on our new laundry room across the
way. We are hoping that it will be completed soon and I will happily be the
first to try it out. Mike puts Bill on a project and he quietly and efficiently Newsletter Editor: Bernadette Serrano

gets it done without any babysitting. Bill was our friend long before
we purchased Southwoods RV Resort but we have been so lucky to
have such a capable and reliable employee in him, as well as such a
great friend.
I heard the soft buzz of the mower going by and realized that
Skip Donovan was out cutting the grass now that the rain helped it to
turn green and grow again. He does such a good job watching the
forecast and making sure that the park is in good shape before the
weekend guests arrive.
My thoughts traveled to earlier in the morning when I noticed
Sue Sztaba working in the garden down by the entrance. She tends to
the gardens all around the park on a rotating basis and keeps every-
thing looking lovely. You can often find Charlie, Sue’s hubby, help-
ing her by watering plants, shoveling mulch or doing pretty much
whatever she asks of him, I think. We continue to receive positive
comments all season long from guests and seasonals about what a
great job they do.
Next I thought about Diane Skelton working in the store,
taking care of guests and answering the ever ringing phone. A little
later in the day, Jean Best relieved her and took over duties in the
office/store. There is so much that the office staff has to be knowl-
edgeable about and all of them, including Paul Stenzel, Cont. Page 2

Sue Says… (from Page 1) Cheri Beenhouwer and Bernadette Serrano are ab-
solutely the best at what they do. They often give our
customers the first impression of Southwoods RV Re-
sort and each one of them truly represents us well.
Bernadette Serrano does double duty cuz she’s our
outstanding monthly newsletter editor as well.
Although this is Steve Swiatowy’s first year
helping out, he is also very capable and responsible.
We are thrilled to have the additional help with tasks
that have been “put on hold” in the past due to lack of
time and manpower. He is efficient and thorough and
always has a friendly smile to boot.
You can usually find Larry and Linda Kitt
out and about buzzing from one job to another. They
peek in on the bathhouses and laundries throughout the
day to make sure they are in good shape and filled with
supplies. They also move the rental trailers on and off
sites and get them ready for guests before they arrive.
Propane tanks need to be filled, black and gray water
tanks emptied and the air and fridges turned on. They
also clean them when necessary and do additional tasks
that we ask of them.
Rose Ann & Scott Bensley help out with
cleaning the rental units as well. They make sure no
one has left anything behind, and that they are cleaned
for the next guest and in good repair. They check the
supplies and amenities, and also make sure there have
been no uninvited, unwelcome little critter “guests.”
All you have to do is sniff the air for the aro-
mas from the Patio Grill to know that Deb Rich is do-
ing her thing! She is quite the short order cook and
whips up wonderful treats on the weekends mostly.
The cheeseburgers are OUT OF THIS WORLD deli-
cious! She knows just how long to grill those Angus
beef burgers before you have to flip them and the onion
rings… OMG (ok, have to change the subject; it’s mak-
ing me hungry thinking about it).
Some of our helpers are not so noticeable but
nonetheless super important to all of us. I am referring
to David Bott and his exceptional skills with our Wi-Fi
and tech issues in the park. He’s a Freakin’ Genius!
And a nice guy, too.
Another helper that does not get much atten-
tion due to the location of the task is Walt Kane. He
religiously meets Larry Kitt in the wood pile to split
and bundle wood for our rack. This can usually be a
hot and dirty job, but nonetheless they do it without
complaint (at least not to me).
Jen Manley is able to express her creativity
each week with the kids during Kids Craft. She comes
up with the ideas for projects and compiles the sup-
plies. The kids truly look forward to making a treasure
each week and I believe many of the parents are thank-
ful for the hour of structured activity.
We are truly BLESSED with all of the inter-
ests and efforts folks contribute here at Southwoods. It
makes me grateful for all of you and this wonderful
world we live in. God is good, and that brings to mind
Reverend Gloria Leggett who devotedly provides the
spiritual and inspirational Worship Services that are
held in the pavilion each week in the Peace Chapel at
Southwoods.
Many seasonals and monthlies volunteer in
other ways and activities that were not mentioned in
this article. Please know that anything anyone contrib-
utes to enhance life here at Southwoods is greatly and
sincerely appreciated. Look around you when you get
a chance and feel the light and love in this wonderful
little community we all get to experience together.
Happy Camping!
Editor’s Reminder
Unlike the first 5 issues
of A Southwoods State of Mind,
which are published on the 15th
of the month, September’s
Newsletter will be published on
September 30th.
Therefore the deadline
for contributions will be Tues.,
September 25th. This will be our final edition of the season; make
sure you get your stories in!
Please, please, please! slow
down and follow the speed limit. We
have all been guilty of going too fast
at times and it’s just not worth the
risk of hitting someone. As you
know there are many children riding
bikes and darting in and out of camp-
sites and around corners. Kids do not
pay attention so please be EXTRA CAREFUL when driving in the park
especially around the corner near
where lower and upper row M and
the bottom of the hill intersection
meet. Kids can come whipping
around those corners without looking
often and sometimes do not have
helmets on even though they are sup-
posed to. Golf carts can often be
going too fast as well so let’s all be
extra diligent and cognoscente of
driving slowly and watchfully in the park.
Thank you! Sue and Mike
Important reminder to all!

Editor’s Note
Hi, all. Please note that I have removed
my familiar email address (the “Rochester.rr.com”
one) below, as lately (since Spectrum has taken
over what was formerly Time Warner Cable
(TWC)), I’ve not been receiving all the emails
folks have told me they’ve sent. In particular, lar-
ger files (those with photos attached) seem to be
the ones not getting through. I hadn’t had that
issue in the past, and I may be unfairly blaming
Spectrum.
That being said, it is highly likely that I’ll
be leaving Spectrum and going the route of
Greenlight (Internet Service Provider) in the near
future. So from now on, please send your contri-
butions (articles, photos, announcements, etc.) to
my gmail e-mail address (below) as I’m more
confident I’ll receive them there.
I will probably continue to send out the
newsletter via my Roadrunner email account, at
least for this issue (August’s) as well as Septem-
ber’s. In the meantime, please continue to send
me your stuff so I can work my magic and create
these newsletters for you all. Thanks in advance.
Best Kept Secret in the Camp Store Contributed by: Bernadette Serrano
I’m willing to wager that
most of you have walked past this
Honey Bar display in the Camp
Store at least once, if not dozens of
times.
There on the top of the dis-
play, it lists its selling points: 100%
Wholesome, Gluten Free, Non-
GMO, No Sugar Added.
These are the five varieties:
Sweet & Salty
Apple Nut
Trail Mix
Peanut Butter & Jam
Quinoa & Cranberry
Have you ever wondered
what they taste like? Curiosity got
the better of me last week so I tried
the Quinoa & Cranberry bar.
One word: TASTY! Don’t
just take my word for it, try one for
yourself before they’re all gone!

History Made at Southwoods! Contributed by: A Little Bird
Linda Exton (C-24) made history this week by becoming
the first person to win the highly sought, “Little Stinker” award
without even playing. This “Skunk” is awarded each week to the
person having the “Lowest” score for the evening. With a score
of “Zero” Linda had no completion for this award.
You see, Linda was visiting her daughter, Betsy, in
Greenville, South Carolina at the time she won this highly coveted
award. Her husband, Dick, who did play that night, had no com-
ment.

Correction to July’s Issue
Every month I hope and pray I send out a perfect news-
letter - one completely free of errors. In my tenure as Editor, it
hasn’t happened. Not once. I always seem to find at least one
(often several) boo-boos after I’ve sent it out to all of you.
Well, with July’s issue, I thought that, finally, I produced
that elusive PERFECT edition. I walked into work that Friday
and said to Sue (Curran), “I think I finally did it! NO ERRORS
in the newsletter! And if you find any, please don’t burst my
bubble and tell me any differently.” Sue just smiled her infa-
mous, sweet smile.
Ten minutes later Deb Rich comes into the office and
says to me, “Bernadette, Jen Manley didn’t send you those 50/50
photos of Mike and his winning ticket, I did!” (I had inadver-
tently credited Jen as being the contributor of those pictures.) I
had a whole glorious ten minutes in my self-induced euphoria
thinking I’d created an error-free issue.
Instead, here is my correction giving Deb Rich credit for
those two photos, while I nibble on a morsel of humble pie.
Thus I find myself back in search mode, seeking that
elusive perfect issue, if one does, indeed, exist at all!

Teen Weekend at SW Contributed by: Bernadette Serrano
Southwoods hosted its Third Annual
Teen Weekend on August 3rd, 4th & 5th. We had
a solid core group of about a dozen teens who
first played mini golf, and later ate pizza and
wings in the game room (the dozen increased by
four for a total of 16 for the food, go figure).
Due to lack of graham crackers, the teen
campfire featured “Oreo Smores” which were an
instant hit with them.
At 9 pm, Sue opened up the Cloverleaf
Pool for a special hour “teen swim,” with the
same dozen youths who were splashing, swim-
ming, squealing and just being kids enjoying
some special time together.
Since I had to work in the office during most of their
gathering events, I only caught snatches and glimpses, but
once we closed the camp store I was able to stay pool side
with one of the moms to make sure they were supervised and
safe.
Seeing them enjoy their youth brought me back to
the days when I was a teenager (and we won’t talk about how
long ago that was...). How important it is for them to have a little niche in the world, even if it is for just one weekend a
summer when the emphasis is on being a teenager.

Sisters Listening to Dave Phelps
These three sisters, Karen, Susan and
Mary, enjoyed Dave Phelps’ concert on the pool
patio August 11th.
They were wearing these adorable hats,
along with what I can only describe as “Teletubby”
T-shirts. Their matching shirts had rectangles that
were “sound sensitive” and would swirl colorfully
to the music. One gentleman came into the camp
store and mentioned these ladies to me, so I went out to ask permission to take their photo for the
newsletter.

Wet-n-Wild Weekend
Wet-n-Wild Weekend always starts with
a visit from the Byron Fire Department! First
they demonstrate how they suit up to fight a fire,
then give a talk about fire prevention. They Pass-
the-Boot to collect donations for the Fire House.
Finally, to everyone’s great joy, they roll
out the plastic and provide the water and suds
creating the infamous Slip-n-Slide, a highlight of
Southwoods’ Wet-n-Wild Weekend!

Wi-Fi at Southwoods Contributed by: David Bott
Let’s Learn Some About Wi-Fi… In a Simple
Way…
So, RV Park Wi-Fi… We all know it, and for
the most part, when we travel we all hate it right? I
mean really, COME ON! How hard could it be to have
Wi-Fi in an RV Park? After all, I just call my cable
company and BAM…High Speed Wi-Fi in my home.
So what’s the big deal with Wi-Fi in RV Parks and why
is it “usually” so bad?
As someone who has installed a number of
parks ranging from as little as two Access Points (AP)
to large scale ones with 127 AP covering over a full
square mile of park, and still help manage them, let me
try to give you some insight as to what is involved in
doing Wi-Fi in an RV Park, and what parks, and their
guests, run into.
You have likely seen me install all the new
cool tech around the park. (Well, it’s cool to me at
least.) So you may be asking… “Why is the Wi-Fi ser-
vice sometimes poor?” That can be for a number of
reasons but the largest one for an RV park like this I
can tell you is all the “noise” that is created by all the
devices that people have.
Every cell phone, tablet, computer, Smart TV,
Game Console, streaming device, etc., puts out a 2.4
Ghz frequency even if you are not using the device at
the time. Even your Microwave Oven puts out a 2.4
Ghz signal when it is running. No, it is not broadcast-
ing to anyone what you're cooking, it’s the smell that
does that. It just happens to send out that frequency
when it’s running. So, as more guests come into the
park, the more “frequency noise” comes into the park.
Of course along with the other real noise from more
golf carts, kids, parties, and more or less just people
having a good time! In some parks, it also could be
that the AP’s are overloaded with devices connecting,
but I can assure you, that is not the case with these new
generation AP’s that I just installed which can handle
80 connections per AP. (The most I have seen on one
AP this year is 37.) So what does all this mean?
I know, some of you want to say… “But
David, my phone shows a strong signal yet it is slow or
not staying connected.” Yes, it surely may and that is
because it can only report on what it is receiving, signal
wise, from the AP. It can’t tell you what the AP re-
ceives from you. These nice new AP’s that can handle
four times the traffic than the old ones, put out a very
powerful signal as it has a large antenna verses the ones
in your device. You see, like in life, it takes two to
have a conversation and if one person can’t be heard, a
conversation can’t talk place. The same is true for your
device and the AP. Your device, with a smaller an-
tenna, may not be able to “talk back” to the AP as it is
not strong enough to be heard because of all the
“noise.” (Continued next page…)

August 15, 2018 A Southwoods State of Mind Page 13
Wi-Fi at Southwoods (continued from Page 12) Contributed by: David Bott
So let’s now combine all this information and
put it in a way that’s simple to understand. Think of a
room, like the Game Room. Two people in that room
standing at each end can talk without much issue. (Just
to be clear… the two “people” in this case are your de-
vice and the AP.) Now add 10 more people in the
room talking, it just got harder to talk to that same per-
son. Now 20 people, even harder. And so it goes, on
and on. This is all considered “noise” and you need to
be able to cut through that, with a stronger signal, for
your device to be able to talk with the AP.
Remember I mentioned the signal you see on
your phone? Think of it like this… In that same room,
with all those people, the person on the other side you
want to talk with has a megaphone. You surely will be
able to hear and understand that person even over all
the other “noise” as they are loud with that megaphone.
However, that person can’t hear you. So, a slower con-
versation, or none at all, based on the amount of
“noise.” You try and try again to talk to that other per-
son who may be only hearing a few words at a time and
thus you need to repeat it over again. You know, like
this. You walk into the room and say to the person at
the other end…“What time is it?”… “What? I can’t
hear you!” … “What time is it?” … “Huh?” … “What
time is it?” … “Oh, It’s 10AM” … “So why are all
these people in here drinking already?” … “What?” …
“Never mind” and walk out of the room. In other
words, dropping the connection. Get the point?
Ok, one more thing to add to all this. Wi-Fi
frequencies don’t like things in the way. Be it build-
ings, trees, leaves, or other motor homes or RV’s.
These do nothing but scatter the signal around and
make more noise, or even absorb the signal. Even wa-
ter drops on a leaf interferes. (Wi-Fi hates rain!) Think
of a light beam, which is a frequency, going into water,
it changes angle! To make matters even worse is if the
place you call home here has aluminum siding! Alumi-
num is used as a frequency shield as it will block most
frequencies. Lead is worse, but you don’t make RV’s
out of lead for you would not be able to move some-
thing that size made of lead. But as guests come in,
you don’t know what will be parked throughout the
park, and because of that, the park is always changing
in how the Wi-Fi performs. No network designer
should ever say they guarantee it will work. Installing
Wi-Fi in an RV Park is always a best effort install be-
cause the park is always changing.
So how do you help the issue? A park can by
adding more AP’s so that there is a better chance of
being closer to one so your device can be heard. You
know, like that if that person you were trying to talk to
in the game room moves closer to you. But that comes
with time and money to get it done.
If you would like to improve the service now,
you could try a Wi-Fi Router which have a larger an-
tenna than your device does. So in theory, It should be
able to connect to the parks Wi-Fi because it now has a
megaphone. (Note I still said SHOULD.) Even better,
it also would create a private network, with your own
SSID, for your devices to connect to! Something like
this… https://amzn.to/2P052vj (Cut and paste this
Amazon Link if you can’t click it.) If needed, this unit
can also use an external antenna thus giving you even a
better signal. It comes with suction cups so you can put
it right on your window closest to your closest AP.
So there you have it. You surely are
now MUCH better informed as to how Wi-Fi
works and why things can be like they can be.
Want me to tell you more about how
fun it is to deal with RV Parks? Ok, here is a
video I did on this topic for RVers and Camp-
ground owners….
“A Better Understanding of RV Park
Wi-Fi”: https://youtu.be/7w16KoK3tgI
(Again, if not clickable, cut and paste into your
browser.)
So that’s Wi-Fi… Want to know even a little more on how a network runs? You will
have to wait for the next newsletter.

WANTED! Who shot the sheriff? SUE SHOT THE SHERIFF! But she claims she did not shoot the deputy.
A reporter never reveals his/her sources, and this reporter heard the story from several individuals, in-
cluding the suspect herself. This reporter shall relay the story to the best of his/her ability.
It all began during the Wet-n-Wild Weekend at Southwoods RV Resort. No one could have imagined
just how WILD it would become!
For those who are unfamiliar with Wet-n-Wild events at Southwoods, one is the 4:00 pm Wagon Ride
where riders arm themselves with squirt guns and take aim at campers along the route. In return, campers are also
armed - some with squirt guns, others with water hoses - the result of which typically yields drenched revelers.
Just one of the many WET parts of our Wet-n-Wild Weekend here at the resort.
Since East Meadow and South Loop also had their block parties that day, Mike generously offered a spe-
cial wagon ride to the East Meadowers later that same afternoon. Sauerkraut Sue jumped on board, loaded
weapon in hand.
The trouble began when the wagon, full of
East Meadowers, dared to traverse South Loop, inter-
rupting its celebration. Our resident Sheriff (a South-
looper) decided to cut Mike off at the pass, blocking
his exit. Sheriff Fyfe (name changed to protect the
innocent) pulled his unmarked car, lights flashing/siren
wailing, across the entrance/exit of South Loop, pre-
venting Mike from making any escape with the wagon.
Sheriff Fyfe then proceeded to read off a list of charges
against Mike. In the course of this standoff, Sue con-
cealed herself behind two riders, then took careful aim.
Bullseye! Her water stream hit Sheriff Fyfe
directly in the chest. Looking down, perplexed as the
water soaked his shirt, then looking up, he could not
see his assailant. At this point, the story gets fuzzy.
No one is claiming responsibility for outing Sue, but
soon the chant of “Sue Shot the Sheriff” (try saying
that three times fast!) could be heard throughout the
campground. News of this nature travels like wildfire.
The next morning at Worship Service, Rev.
Leggett asked for prayer requests. Diane Schneider
(unknown whether she is a Southlooper, East Mead-
ower or otherwise), declared that Sue Curran required
prayers. At this point, Sue herself, shared the sordid
details of the previous day’s events.
