SquiresMissionStatement

TheDeMolaySquiresisanorganizationforyoungmenthatisanappendantbody

ofDeMolay International. The goal of the Squires is to allowboys between the

ages of 9 and 12 an opportunity to participate in some of the fun activities of

DeMolay,butnotbeoverwhelmedwiththelargeagedifferencesandritualwork

thatispartofDeMolay.Thebasicorganizationiscalleda“Manor.”EachManoris

sponsoredbyaDeMolayChapter.

TheSquireshavetheirownritualwork,whichisdesignedtobeeasytolearn,and

toteachmorallessonstheycanunderstand.TheymeetinaMasonicLodgeroom,

or in a room set up as though itwere aMasonicLodge room.Theyhave seven

officers:

While this program is not a “DeMolay Lite” program, it is one that opens the

doorsforyoungmentogetinterestedinwhatDeMolayhastooffer,withoutbeing

burnedoutalongtheway.

The program introduces the young boys to the atmosphere of DeMolay, and

gradually introducesDeMolaydriven concepts tomoldbetter youngmenbefore

they reach DeMolay age. Additionally, this program gives the young men of

DeMolay an opportunity to mentor the younger Squires, gradually growing the

communicationskillsofanyDeMolay.

The Squires program offers a wide variety of activities that the Squires and

DeMolay can do together, while still offeringDeMolay independence to run its

activitiesasnormal.Usingitsownritual,awardsprogram,andformofAdvisory

Council,theManorselfoperatesasitsownorganization.

Hereinliestheproposalfor“DeMolaySquires”anditsprogramspecifics:

3.SquireMeritProgram

o Description

Thiswouldserveasaseriesofawards,similartotheDeMolay

MeritBarProgram.However,thisprogramwouldconsistofa

‘Squire’sMeritBook’wheretheManorAdvisorswoulddenote

which‘Merits’eachyoungmanhadachievedinsideofthe

book.

Therewouldbe8differentareasinwhichSquirescouldearn

theseMerits,andtherewouldbethreedifferentlevelsineach

(Gold,Silver,andBronze)whichwouldbedenotedinthe

Handbookbyspecialstickers(Gold,Silver,andBronze)

representingeachlevelreached.

TheMeritbookcouldalsoserveasaformoftheLeadership

ResourceGuidefortheSquiresandserveasaplacetokeep

TheDeMolayYouthProtectionCommitteerecommendstheusetheDVD“It

Introduction

ItHappenedtoMeisavideopresentationproducedbytheBoyScoutsofAmerica

forviewingbyyoungerboysandtheirparents.Parentswhohaveviewedthevideo

gaveithighmarksforaddressingpersonalsafetyissuesinaverynonthreatening

manner.Thesituationsofpossibleperilpresentedinthevideoareintendedtobe

ambiguous,allowingparentstobeasspecificastheywishindiscussingpersonal

safetyruleswiththeirchildren.

Theintentofthevideoistodevelopcommunicationbetweenparentandchild

aboutpersonalsafetydecisionsmadebythechild—butwithhelpfromparentsor

othertrustedadults.

Thecoremessageforchildreniscontainedwithinthe“FourRulesofPersonal

Safety,”presentedinthevideo.Theserulesare:

CheckfirstwithaparentorothertrustedadultbeforeIchangeplans,goanywhere,

oracceptanythingfromanyone.

Gowithafriendinordertobesaferandtohavemorefun.Foryoungerboys,the

Whiletheserulesarespecificallyintendedtoprotectchildrenfromsexualabuse,

theadvicetoseekhelpfromtrustedadultsisapplicabletomanyproblemsthat

Thetermofofficecanbefromfourtosixmonths.ItishopedthateachSquirewill

progressthroughthevariouselectedoffices,beginningasJuniorSquireandending

asMasterSquire,butitisnotrequired.Duringeachterm,theMasterSquireshould

planatleastonefunactivity.ThiscanbeanythingthattheMasterSquirewants,

butmustbeapprovedbytheManorAdvisor.

Whenmeeting,itissuggestedthattheSquiresfollowRobert’sRulesofOrder,as

theyapplytoDeMolayfunctions.UseofthegavelisthesameasinotherDeMolay

functions.Also,nooneisallowedtospeakuntilrecognizedbytheMasterSquire,

andhealwaysstandswhilespeaking.

Themeetingsshouldlastnolongerthananhour.Itisrecommendedthatthe

meetingsbescheduledonthesamenightsthatthesponsoringDeMolayChapter

meets.IfpermittedbytheExecutiveOfficer,Squiresmaybeinvitedtoattendnon

ritualportionsofDeMolaymeetingsalongwithotherguests,andshouldbe

recognizedbytheMasterCouncilor.
