Kalayaan, KalagayanE D I T O R I A L

Cocolisap and our coconutsCocolisap, a very dangerous

pest is causing so much alarm among coconut farmers and is threatening the entire coconut industry, spreading all over the country and killing millions of coconut trees. The situation is causing a major panic among coconut industry stakeholders with the cocolisap leaving a trail of destruction in Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, Quezon and other parts of Luzon, and now spreading up to Basilan.

Coconuts are major agricultural exports with the Philippines accounting for more than fifty percent of the total output of coconut cooking oil all over the world. Aside from this,it has other produces like virgin oil, and buko juice which has gained global fame for its many health benefits which the President, in one of his State of the Nation Address even mentioned that coco water exports have risen from almost two million liters to more than sixteen million liters in 2012.

The hews about cocolisap infestation of thousand of coconut trees in a barangay in the province of Batangas was reported to the Philippine Coconut Authority on 2010 but little was done about it. By 2011, the infestation had spread to other areas in Batangas and reached Laguna, with reports coming from the province of Quezon. The Department of Agriculture made several measures to contain the scale insect invasion and even claimed that the mitigating measures like

leaf pruning, spraying activities including the application of salt were working and that the trees fully recovered.

It seems the government spoke too soon, because the pest continued their destruction, resulting in millions of dead coconut trees while many more are dying, their leaves turning yellow or brown. Noticeably, they thought they were dealing with scale insects normally found in our country, but they were wrong. It turned out that they were dealing with a more destructive insects believed to have come from Indonesia through one of the International ports in Batangas. The insects attacks the leaves of the coconut trees, causing the trees to die and whats more scary is that it spreads so fast because the pest are airborne and therefore travels very fast.

The newly appointed food security czar and Agriculture Modernization Secretary Kiko Pangilinan has sounded the alarm bells over the coconut infestation warning it could spread all over the country by yearend if not controlled. He outlined a 750 million plan to control the infestation which the government of PNoy promptly acceded. But most of the coconut industry players do not agree to the proposal to inject chemical pesticides on the coconut trees.

While its true that injection will be faster and maybe cheaper, turning the coconut trees into virtual poison for the insects,

but it will have more costly consequences in the long run because some scientist said that it could make coconut products unsafe for consumption. Virgin coconut oil producers are particularly concerned that the naturallness of coconut products and by products will be affected. The use of chemicals in Philippine coconut products being rejected by the consumers in the International Market who would prefer cleaner and chemical free products.

So why are they trying to push through with this plan of using synthetic chemicals if it is a health hazard? According to some, it is being pushed by a former member of the academe who is now representing a foreign company dealing the synthetic products. Coconut industry players know that consumer perception could adversely affect the market which is why they are opting for natural methds that can effectively kill these insects. One of them is to introduce the right predator insects that can target the pest like what was done in Indonesia where these scale insects came from.

Just few days ago, Secretary Pagilinan came to Brgy Potol in Tayabas City to formally launched the campaign to fight and subdue the pest by spraying, pruning, cutting infested leaves and injecting its trunk with chemicals. They plan to do this to about 33,000 coconut trees daily with the help of coconut farmers who have lost their source of living because of cocolisap.

GEMI A BREAKGEMI FORMARAN

We have no fishpond to sell!During the last Father’s

Day, I posted a photo on my Facebook account. It was me making a selfie shot and behind me was a group of men harvesting hundreds of bangus in a fishpond.

More than 150 of my FB friends including my wife and kids liked it.

Actually, it was not the photo that caught their attention but its caption.

The caption says,”I feel something different whenever I’m in a fishpond. I can’t explain it but its really great. And every time I see fishpond, I would recall the time when our family had a big financial problem. To address the problem, we came up with an idea of selling a fishpond although we hate doing it. It was our eldest brother who raised the idea, and we eventually agreed. But at the end of the day, the selling did not push through because we realized that we have no fishpond to sell. Happy Father’s Day!”

And so my FB friends realized that it was purely a joke.

Happy Father’s Day!”

Being a joker is an open book to my close friends especially to my fellow journalists who know me well. Once I speak, a portion of my praises would definitely be a joke. That’s why they would always wait for the punchline, my signature!

But in the family, we have a better joker in the person of King, my elder brother who also writes.

King is a little taller, bigger, and much darker than me but as what they consistently say, the younger is always the better.

We also have another joker- bother. He is Jay, who early retired from the police service for reasons that his being a cop hinders his being a practical shooter and a range officer. He is of course much older than King.

My two brothers almost have same colors, height and built.

But its a usual thing that people, even our fellows in the practical shooting community would always think that I am

the eldest among the three of us. And its no longer a joke.

Its funny but I couldn’t blame them because of my looks. I wear eyeglasses and speak seriously. Aside from my wife, many say that I have a very strong personality like my father, the late Gil “Banat” Formaran who became famous for his being fearless and hard- hitting radio and TV commentator.

Aside from being a Bible reader, my father was a very good joker and the best joker in the family!

And we have learned a lot from his traits, from being a fighter, principled, responsible, determined, good provider, generous, loyal and joker!

He would crack jokes even during serious moments and unholy hours making everyone of us laughing.

One night as we were about to sleep, my mother told him, “Papa, ang ganda n’ong nakita kong washing machine sa TV kanina, ibili mo nga ako n’on”.

Being a joker is one manifestation that I’m not

that feisty as some people, including those who hate me, used to and would always describe every time they hear my name.

What makes me feisty is my being outspoken. I don’t sanitize the words I use when I describe people, more so when I criticize them over their wrongdoings!

One time, I read an article written by a known columnist. He was attacking a corrupt and wealthy politician for being selfish. He said,”You love your money so much! You feel shy to share even a little portion of it to your constituents”. The writer never described him as greedy.

In my case, I say things directly and hit my target head-on, using words unpleasant to their ears, but appropriate to what they did or to what they are.

I would not just say that someone is slow learner or weak- minded if I know that he is really stupid.

You would never hear me saying that a chief of police is just keeping his temper if I know that he is obviously a coward.

I would never say that

a city mayor is just a soft- hearted leader with a very weak leadership if he is a certified gay.

And if he has “Ka Sister” governor whose reasons for having a number of handsome and macho policemen- bodyguards is his being security conscious, you would not expect me to agree!

I’m not joking!!!Being an outspoken

journalist, joking or not, I would say exactly what you are!

Forgive me but that is the trait that I inherited from my father!

As he would always say during his heydays, “Tell the truth straight and stand with it! Never get intimidated as long as you are telling the truth and doing the right thing”!

And as his program ends, its extro would say, “Huwag ninyong kagagalitan, kailan man, ang taong nagsasabi ng katotohanan!”

And that is the simple reason, gentlemen and ladies, lesbians and gays, why I am what I am!

Ang hindi maniwala, mamamatay agad!

I’m joking!!! Hehehe!

TRUTH ALWAYS PREVAILS

They (politicians) themselves extract the resources from the state,” ayon kay Sanchez.

Karapatan-Quezon News Bureau
