Year by year the role of the Arts Centre continuesto develop and expand. The artistic programmeincluding the performing arts, literature, the visualarts and crafts, music and community arts is nowthe most comprehensive of any theatre or artscentre in Wales and with few parallels eventhroughout the UK.Through our CCAT Wales / Ireland culturalexchange programme we are building strong linksfor future cultural cooperation. The economic impact of the Arts Centre has beenrecognised through research and study as makinga significant contribution to the business profile ofthe region and to high quality employment, especially important in an area of below averageeconomic indicators and declining traditionalemployment patterns. These significant achievements will be used as aspringboard in developing the next exciting phaseof the Arts Centre's growth. This will encompasstheatre production and touring, a programme toencourage new writing talent in Mid and WestWales, a major New Media initiative and animaginative, major building development to providestudios and office spaces for arts organisations andartists, who will contribute, together with the ArtsCentre, to creating a vibrant cultural life for Wales.

Art can open eyes and mind to new ideas, freshways of seeing. In the past year there has beenmuch inspirational and thought provoking workin the exhibitions programme at AberystwythArts Centre, showing artists engaging with thewider world and looking far afield for theirsubject matter.Among the works shown were powerful imagesof African adobe architecture by James Morris;paintings by John Keane about life in Israel andthe occupied territories; an installation byDalziel and Scullion, considering humanendeavour; works by Japanese artistsgrappling with the spiritual in an increasinglysecular society; and much more.

Gall celf agor y llygaid a'r meddwl i syniadaunewydd, ffyrdd gwahanol o weld. Yn ystod yflwyddyn ddiwethaf mae rhaglen arddangosfeyddy Ganolfan wedi cynnwys llawer o waithysbrydoledig a thrawiadol, yn dangos artistiaid yncyfathrebu efo'r byd ehangach ac yn edrychymhellach am eu syniadau a'u pynciau. Ymysg y gwaith a ddangoswyd oedd delweddaucryf yn seiliedig ar bensaerniaeth adobeAffricanaidd gan James Morris; paentiadau ganJohn Keane am fywyd yn Israel a'r tiriogaethaumeddianedig; cyflwyniad gan Dalziel a Scullion, ynystyried yr ymdrech ddynol; gwaith gan artistiaidSiapaneaidd yn brwydro gyda'r dimensiwnysbrydol mewn cymdeithas seciwlar; a llawer mwy.

Film is one of the major art forms of the 20th and 21stcentury and as such forms an important part of the artisticprogramming of the Centre. During the year we havescreened a wide ranging programme of film including classicsof cinema history, the best of UK and world cinema and haveencompassed work from small scale independent film makersto major Hollywood productions.

One of the main successes of the 2004/5 season was thecontinued growth of WOW! Wales One World Festival, which wasorganised by the Arts Centre in conjunction with Taliesin ArtsCentre with David Gillam as Co-ordinator. The festival’s aim is topromote film from primarily third world countries, which are oftenunder represented in general UK film programmes. The premiereof the festival was at the Arts Centre and the majority of filmsprogrammed here sold out and were very well received, with anassociated education programme for local schools. The films thenwent on to tour venues around Wales.

Ffresh, the Student Moving Image Festival for Wales, took placein Aberystwyth with over 500 students from throughout Walesshowcasing their work and taking part in discussions, workshopsand masterclasses. The festival was organised by Sgrin,Aberystwyth Arts Centre and NAHEMI.

Ffilm yw un o brif ffurfiau celf yr 20fed a’r unfed ganrif arhugain ac felly mae’n rhan bwysig o raglen artistig yGanolfan. Yn ystod y flwyddyn ‘rydym wedi sgrinioamrywiaeth helaeth o ffilmiau gan gynnwys clasuron yn hanesy sinema a’r gorau o sinema Prydain a’r byd. ‘Rydym wedicynnwys gwaith gan wneuthurwyr ffilm bach annibynnol ynogystal â phrif gynyrchiadau Hollywood.

Prif amcan yr wyl yw i hyrwyddo ffilm yn bennaf owledydd y trydydd byd sydd fel arfer yn cael eu gadael allan oraglennu ffilm ym Mhrydain. Cafwyd derbyniad brwd i’r rhan fwyafo’r ffilmiau a ddangoswyd yn y Ganolfan a chafwyd yn ogystalraglen addysgiadol gysylltiedig ar gyfer ysgolion lleol. Wedyn aethy ffilmiau ar daith i wahanol leoliadau yng Nghymru.
