Celebrating the longestnights of the year withlights, feasting, and festive

gatherings has been the tradi-tion of many cultures for cen-turies.

This year, the Auburn Cham-ber of Commerce continues

that longstanding tradition withtheir annual Festival of LightsParade which will begin at 5p.m., Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012 atCherry Avenue in Auburn.

From there, the parade willcontinue onto Lincoln Way,then left onto High Street.,before finishing at the GoldCounty Fairgrounds.

The light parade has beenenchanting Auburn residentsfor decades.

Its a great way to celebratethe holiday season, said BruceCosgrove, CEO of the AuburnChamber of Commerce.

    Last year around 14,000 peo-

ple turned out to see the bril-liantly lit floats creatively deco-rated by local businesses,

    organizations, and even indi-vidual families.

    Its magical, said Fran

Haynes, president of The SugarPlump Fairies who have beenparticipating in the parade

since 1997. You get to tastefame for one night.

The Sugar Plump Fairiesdelight in garnering attentionfor a number of philanthropiccauses, such as ringing bells forthe Salvation Army and part-nering with other organizationslike the Boys and Girls Club andHealing Journeys, a non-profit

    organization helping those withcancer.

For Haynes and the SugarPlump Fairies, participating inthe Festival of Lights Paradeprovides an excellent outlet fortheir fun and silliness as well asan opportunity to further theircharitable goals.

If you would like to partici-pate this year, applications areavailable at auburnchamber.net or visit the Auburn Cham-

ber of Commerce office to pickup a physical copy.

For more information, callthe Auburn Chamber of Com-merce at (530) 885-5616.

hen I talk to local resi-

dents, they often expressto me their desire to notonly maintain our strong senseof community in Auburn butalso the need to build on oursuccesses and continuallyimprove the overall quality oflife.

How will this be done? Keep-ing more of our hard-earneddollars re-circulating in ourlocal economy is an indispen-sable way to strengthen the

Auburn community. In America, the consumer is

King. Weve got power. Whenthe consumer understands thevital importance of local busi-nesses, he or she can direct

their dollars locally and helpsustain and build their local

    community.Auburn has thrived for over

164 years because of the strongrelationship between residentsand our small business owners.Merchants in Auburn provideexceptionally friendly service, unique goods and services, pro-

vide jobs to local residents, donate to local charities and

festivals, support our schools, and provide needed tax revenueto local governments tostrengthen public safety, fix ourroads and create wonderfulpark and recreation opportuni-ties.

    When we Think Auburn First,

we pay the salary of the cop onthe beat, the firefighter

    responding to an emergency

and the road that gets paved. When we Think Auburn Firstwe support Little League, theGirl Scouts, the Auburn Sym-phony, parades and numerouslocal charities.

So, let us, as Auburn area res-idents, use our dollar power tosupport our Auburn communi-ty and our merchants. We livein Auburn because its a specialplace. Lets keep it that way.
