AlJaberShippingAgencyandMarineWorksisfirstinlinetoprocurethemosttechnicallyadvancedmachineryandrecentlyacquiredtheAlJaber72,alandingcraftcumcontainercarrierwithstrongcapabilities.

Practical thinkingCEO David Nelson discusses his hands-on approach to

business and future vision for Al Jaber Group

“Ofcourse,Ihavecertaininteractionsintheoffice,butIcan’tstaythereallthetime,”heremarks.“Earlyinmycareer,Ilearntthatit’sbettertogetoutandactuallyseewhat’shappening.Ineedtohaveagoodunderstandingoftheentirebusiness,soImakeanefforttovisitthevariousoperationsandtalktopeople.

“I’mverytransparentandItrytobeaccessible.Ifpeopledon’tknowaboutourissuesandvision,thenhowcantheyalignbehindthem?Weareallpartofthesameteam.”ItwasduringhisfirstjobworkingforacoalcompanyinAustraliathatNelsondemonstratedhispracticaltalent.

“Istartedoffasaresearcher,butitjustwasn’tforme,”headmits.“IdiscoveredthatIenjoyedgettingoutandbeingindirectcontactwithpeopleinthefield,whereIdevelopedplentyofexperiencewhenIworkedatanewcoalmine.Asanewgraduate,Iearnedtherespectofmycolleagueswhen,inthemiddleofthenightIhelpedthemshoveloutacrusherthathadbrokendown.”

ThecoalcompanywaslatertakenoverbyShell,andNelsonworkedinthetradingdepartmentfortheinternationalenergygiantfor18monthsinSydneybeforemovingtoitsLondonheadoffice.HavingworkedforShellintheUKcapitalforsevenyears,NelsonmovedtoHongKongin2000tooneofShell’sjointventures,powercompanyInterGen.

Nelson’s currentpositionasCEOofAlJaberGroupishisthirdchiefexecutiverolein12years.HisfirstCEOrolewasinBrisbane,Australia,runningInterGen’spowergenerationcompany.HethenmovedtoUGL,aSydney-basedengineeringcompany,where

hemanagedmorethan6,000employeesspanningoperationsinninecountries,includingtheKingdomofSaudiArabiaandQatar.

ElaboratingonhowheattainedtheAlJaberGrouprole,Nelsonsays,“IwasapproachedaboutthejobwhileIwasinAustralia.

Ifoundoutaboutthegroup’shighreputationforqualityandintegrityandthatwasreallyimportanttome.

“I’moriginallyanengineer,soIlovethebigtoysandthereareplentyofthematAlJaberGroup.EverydayweworkthebiggestmobileequipmentfleetintheGCC.”

I’m very transparent and I try to be accessible. If people don’t know about the issues and the vision, then how can

they align behind them?

Hemayhavedecadesofinternationalexperi-enceinarangeofsectors,butDavidNelsonisnotthetypeofCEOtohibernateinhisofficewiththe

doorshut.Nelsondevelopedamorepersonalandhands-onapproachhavingstudiedChemicalEngineeringandwork-inginhisnativeAustralia,aswellasEuropeandAsia.

NelsonalsofeltagreatconnectionwiththeAlJaberfamily,rightfromtheinterviewstage.“Icameheretwiceandtherewassuchagreatrapportwiththefamily,”hesays.“Theymademefeelverywelcome.”

Headdsthattherelationshipisgoingfromstrengthtostrength.“Eachmonthwehaveagreaterunderstandingofeachother.Wehavealignedthinkingandwe’resolvingproblemstogether.”

TheexperienceoflivinginAbuDhabihasexceededNelson’sexpectations.“Mytimeheresofarhasbeenoverwhelminglygreatinallaspects.”

NelsonalsopraisestheexcellentbusinessconditionswithintheUAE’scapital.“AbuDhabihasastrongeconomy-basedonoilandgasbutdiversified-withimpressivegrowthandstrongpotential.”

Withawealthofexperiencegleanedfromworkingacrossthreecontinents,Nelsonknowshowtoadapthisapproachtoregionalstylesofdoingbusiness.

“Goodbusinesspracticeisuniversal:youapplythesamefundamentalsindifferentcultures.ButI’vealsolearnttheneedtobesensitive,humbleandunderstandtherewillbedifferencesineachcultureandcompany.Youcan’tjustbargeinandapplyacookiecutterapproach.”

Moving forward,Nelsonbelievesitisessentialtoretainthe‘essence’ofAlJaberGroup’s40-yearheritage.Hecontinues:“Weneedtomaintainthepreeminentreputationforqualityandreliability.It’safantastic

company–I’mtrulyinaweofwhattheAlJaberfamilyhasachieved.OurChairmanstartedwithoneLandRoverinthedesertandhasgrownthishugeconglomerate.

“Notonlyisitbig,butitisverywellregarded.”HealsohighlightstheneedtoreacttothematuredeconomicconditionsintheMiddleEast.Thereisadynamicchangeinthewholeregion.”

Businesseshavematuredherewhichmeansthatthereisgreatersophistication,bothinourcompetitorsandourcustomers.Weneedtounderstandthisnewdynamicandimproveourefficiencytoreacttoit.”

The best wayforAlJaberGrouptoreacttothischange,saysNelson,isto‘supercharge’.Heexplains:“Thegrowthhasbeenfantasticbutwearesufferinganeconomicplateau.Giventhechangeddynamic,howdowemaintainthegrowthtrajectory?

“Insteadofalteringthedirectionofourbusinesssectors,Ibelieveweneedanewimpetusbyongoingimprovement.”

The firstmajorchallengewastoraisetheoverallsitelevelbynearlytwometres,requiringthetransportationofmorethansevenmillioncubicmetresofreclaimedmaterial.

Theworstaffectedareasthenrequiredstabilisation.Demonstratingtheirflexibilityandgreatdepthofexpertise,AJPdeployedararemethodofsurchargeloadingtoachievethe

soilstrengthandstabilityrequiredincertainareas.

ProjectManagerLaithTomaexplainshowAJPsolvedthesecondmajorproblemofahighwatertableduetoaggressiveseawater.

“AJPengineeredanintricatebespokedewateringsolution,whichincludedmultipledeepboreholes,whichfedintosettlementandfiltrationlagoonsthatcleansthewaterinaccordancewithQatar’sstrictenvironmentalrequire-ments.Itallowedustobeabletopumptheexcesswaterbackintothesea.

“Weranapreciselogisticaloperationandemployedengineeringknow-howtomeettheclient’sstringentmile-

stones.Itwouldnothavebeenpossiblewithoutthestrongcommitmentofeverybodyintheteam.”

Alargenumberofthird-partystake-holders,includingutilityproviders,civildefenceandenvironmentalagencies,hadongoingoperationswithintheprojectboundary.

Toensurerequirementssuchastemporaryroadclosuresweremet,AJPengagedallstakeholdersfromtheverystart.Heavylivetrafficpassingthroughthebusysiterequiredrigoroussafetystandards.Tomasaysstrongstakeholdermanagementwascriticaltotheproject’sresoundingsuccess.

“Itensuredwefulfilledtheirexpectationseverystepoftheway.Gettingitrightfirsttimemeantweneverhadtogobackandfixorredesignthings.Obviously,thisnotonlyeliminatedanyunnecessarydelaysitalsokeptthescheduleontime.”

andconstructioncontractors,withmulti-disciplineexpertiseincivil,mechanical,electrical,instrumentationandpipelineworks.

AJES’sinvolvementintheexpansionoftheUpperZakumoilfieldwillstrengthenitsfinereputation,asthecompanycontributestotheconstructionofartificialislandsthatwillhousestate-of-the-artoilproductionfacilities.

UpperZakumislocated84kilometresoffthenorthwestcoastofAbuDhabiandisthesecondlargestoffshoreoilfieldintheworld.Theexpansionwillseeoilproductionincreaseto750,000barrelsperday,sustainableforaminimumof25years.

Theexpansionproject,willbespreadacrosstwophasessettofinishin2017.AJESisdeliveringEarlyCivilWorkssolutionsacrossallfournewartificialislands.

AJES’ssignificantmulti-disciplinecapabilitiesarecentraltotheproject’ssmoothrunning.Morethan90percentofthestructuralconcreterequiredisprecast,soproviding

constructionteamswithaconsistent,adequatesupplyisakeychallengethatAJESProcurementandMarineTransportationteamsarewell-equippedtomeet.

AnimpressiveindustrystandardhasbeensetbyAlJaberHeavyLiftandTransport,with

thehandlingoftheworld’slargestcrudecolumnattheRuwaisRefineryExpansionProject,UAE.

ThecrudecolumnatRuwaiswas94metreslong,weighed1,261tonnesandrequiredsomeofAJHL’smostsophisticatedequipmenttotakeontheproject’scomplexmarine,overlandandliftingelements.

Amarinespread,comprisinga350-footclassbargeanda50-tonnebollardpulltugwith76axlelinesofself-propelledmodulartrailers,wasdeployedfortheloadingoperations.Thecolumnwastheninstalledontoitsfoundationbya3,200-tonnecapacitycrane.

ThisRuwaisprojectfurtherraisesAJHL’sprofileasakeyplayerononeoftheworld’smostprestigiouspetrochemicalprojects.TherefineryisoneofthelargestintheUAEwithcapacitysettoexpandby400,000barrelsadayafterthecompletionofthislandmarkexpansionproject.AJHLhasbeenchargedwithhandling145,000freighttonnesofprojectequipment,includingthecolumn.

AJHL’sexpertisewasengagedfromtheverystartoftheRuwaisexpansionoperation.Thecompanywasinvolvedfrompre-biddingstage,helpingtoovercomethecommercial,safetyandtechnicalchallengesposedbyaprojectofthisscale.

Thiscloseengagementwiththeclient’sengineersandtechnicalpersonnelallowedtheteamtooptimiseequipmentrequirementsandensuretherewasminimal,ifnot,zerolosttime.

MeanwhileinSingapore,AJHLnotchedupanothersuccesswhenMcConnellDowellSouthEastAsiaPteLtdengagedAJHLtocontinuethedevelopmentofthemoderncitystate.JurongTownCouncilawardedMcConnellDowellacontractfortheconstructionofanewcementoffloadingfacility.McConnellDowellengagedAJHLtoloadoutandbargetwo500tonneperhourshipunloaders,whichwillreceivebulkcementfromcargovesselsatthenewfacility.

TheGerman-designedunloaderswerefabricatedinBatam,Indonesia,fromwhereAJHLtransportedthem35nauticalmilesacrosstheworld’sbusiestshippinglanestoJurong.

RecentmonthshavebeenbusyatAJTGCwiththestartandcompletionofaseriesofkey

projectsthatwillsignificantlyimproveconnectivityacrosstheGCC.

EtihadRail,developersofthe1,200-kilometrenationalrailnetworkthatwillextendacrosstheUAEfromKSAtoOman,hasengagedtheexpertiseofAJTGCtodevelopthisgroundbreakingregionaltransportinitiativeforfreightandpassengers.

TheprojectisacentralpillaroftheUAEVision2021,andoneofthekeyeconomicprojectsforgrowthanddiversification.Uponcompletion,therailnetworkwillhelptobringbusinessescloser,facilitatemoreefficienttradeandextendgeographicmarkets.

AJTGCisusingitswealthofindustryexperiencetoprovideoverbridgesandserviceroads,aswellasminor

structuressuchasculverts,utilityductsandroadunderpassesinthismassivescaleproject.

One of the majorchallengesofthisprojectisitslocation,andthevastdistanceoverwhichitisenvisaged.Inparticular,thedesertterrainintheLiwatoShahSectionhasmeantthatmountainsofsandhavehadtobelevelledfortheconstructionofrailwayembankments.

Asoneoftheregion’smajorearthmovingandinfrastructurecontractors,AJTGCisabletomobiliseavastarrayofequipmentandplants.Thecompanyhasemployedspecialistconstructionmachineryontheproject,suchasGPScontrolledearthworkandmachinery,includingdozers,gradersanddumpertrucks,toincreasetheaccuracyofthefinishedworksandtooptimisetheembankmentconstructionprocess.

Anadditionalchallengeistheproposedrailtrack,whichrunsoverhighlycriticalnationalinfrastructure,suchasgasandcrudeoillines.ThishasnecessitatedclosecoordinationbetweenAJTGCandvariousauthoritiessuchasGasco,Adco,TakreerandTranscotounderstandtheirrequirements,whilstensuringthatday-to-dayinfrastructureoperationsremainunaffected.

PreparationsforStageOneofEtihadRailhavebegunonthechallenging264kilometreShahtoHabshanstretch,andtrack-layingisalreadyunderway.ScheduledforcompletioninApril2014,AJTGCcurrentlyhasaworkforceof2,500peopledirectlyassignedtothispreliminarysection.

TheoverallEtihadRailproject,whichwilleventuallyconnecttheUAEwithKSA,Qatar,Kuwait,BahrainandOman,isexpectedtobereadyby2018.

AJTGC’sbreadthofinvolvementwithinthisimpressiveventuremakesitaproudandprominentplayerinthedeliveryofoneofthemostambitioustransportnetworksintheregion.

One of AJTGC’skeystrengthsistheavailabilityofitsownasphalt,aggregateandconcretesupplies,whichhelptoensurethedeliveryofprojectsontime.Inparticular,twonewcontractsinAbuDhabiarebenefittingfromthisfacility.

ThefirstisaAED300millioncontractforthedualisationoftheMadinatZayedtoGhayathiRoad,whichwasawardedtoAJTGCbytheDepartmentofTransport.Includedintheremitistheconstructionof80kilometresofasphaltroadaswellasanunderpass,gateaccess,U-turn,laybyandserviceductfacilities.

AJTGCwillalsoberesponsibleforroadmarkingsandstreetlightingatjunctions.WorkstartedinSeptember2013andisscheduledtotake600days.

Almostallofthevitalmaterialrequirementsforthisprojectareabletobesourcedinternally,thankstotheimpressiveexistinginfrastructureofAlJaberGroup’ssubsidiarycompaniesintheprojectvicinity.

ConcreteisbeingsuppliedbyXtramixfromitsplantatMadinatZayed,whiletheaggregatesandasphaltwillbesuppliedbyAlJaberCrushersthroughtheirfactoriesinMafraq.AnewasphaltplantdedicatedspecificallytothisprojectwillalsobeestablishedeitherinMirfaorTarif.

Meanwhile,AJTGC’sexpertiseisalsobeingusedinthedevelopmentofAbuDhabi’sMohammedBinZayed(MBZ)City.

Bringingtogetherpublic,commercial,retailandresidentialfacilitiesinonedestination,MBZwilleventuallybehometoapopulationof85,000acrossapproximately5.8millionsquaremetresofdevelopedland.

ThesecondcontractforthedevelopmentofMBZwasawardedtoAJTGCinJuly2013increasingthetotalinvestmenttoAED400million.TheconstructioncommencedinAugust2013andtheexpectedfinishdateisApril2015.

Currently in theconstructionstage,theprojectinvolvesanew,two-lanehighwayadjacenttotheexistingdualcarriageway.Asapartoftheproject,AJTGCisalsoresponsibleforanyinternalroadsandparkingspaces,thestormwaterdrainagepipelines,the

potablewaterworks,streetlightingandthesewerage,electricalandtelephonenetworks.

Oneofthemainchallengesoftheoperationistoensureandmaintainthesmooth,safeandunhinderedtrafficofvehicles,travellingineitherdirection,duringtheconstructionphases.

Toachievethis,AJTGChasundertakendetailedtrafficmanagementstudiesandhasliaisedwiththeDepartmentofTransportandtrafficpolicetomeettheirrequirementswhileproposinghowtomanagethegeneraltrafficflowduringthesecrucialphases.

Animmutable60-dayshutdownofthemainaccessroadmeantthatworkshadtobeexecutedontimetoavoidunnecessarydisruptiontothesmoothrunningoftheairport.

Thetunnelconsistsofaverticalcoretoaccommodatetwoelevatorsandtwotravelators.Worksweresuccessfullycompletedaheadofscheduleallowingtheroadtore-open10-daysearly.

ALECwastheleadcontractorforthisproject,managingvarioussub-contractsandassociatedpackages.Theoriginaltimescalewas276days,subsequentlyreducedto170daysfollowingarequestfromtheclienttoaccelerateworks.ALECsuccessfullycompletedtheprojectintherequiredperiod.

Dubai Terminal 1willbeundertakingthethirdphaseofitsExpansionProject,withALECcontractedfortheconstructionofanadditionalconcoursebuilding(ConcourseD).Thiswillbelinkedtotheexistingterminalfacilitybyanew,elevatedraillinkservedbyanAutomatedPeopleMover.

ConcourseDwillaccommodatemorethan100foreigncarrierairlines.Theprojectalsoincludesamajorrefurbishmentoftheterminalbuilding

tobringituptotheworld-classstandardsofEmiratesTerminal3.ExclusivelyforEmirates,Terminal3increasedDXB’stotalcapacityby43millionpassengersperyearto60millionwhenitopenedin2008withanassociatedconcourse.

EnablingworksatTerminal1beganinJune2012toturnliveairsidestandsintoalandsideconstructionenvironment.DrawingonpracticalsolutionsandlessonslearnedduringtherecentlycompletedConcourseAproject,ALECiscelebratingthesignificantprogressionofconstructionjustoverayearafterfirstbreakinggroundforthefoundationworks.

In line withDubaiAirport’slong-termaimforcarbonneutralgrowth,specialmeasuresarebeingtakentoimproveenergyefficiencyandsustainability.

Arecyclingprogramme,theuseofrenewableenergyandacommitmenttousinglocally-sourcedandrecycledmaterialsareamongstepsbeingtakenintoconstructthenewconcourse,aswellastheinstallationof192solarpanelsover450squaremetresofroofspace.

Constructionriskmanagementisakeyfocus.Thankstoworld-classstandardsinhealth,safetyandenvironmentalmanagement,ALECisproudtohaveachievedfivemillionman-hoursfreeofalost-timeinjury,whichthecompanyaimstoexceedinthefuture.
