Urban Plan/ Collective Housing

This work was developed in the frame of the Project III discipline in FAUP and consisted in creating an urban plan for a central area in Porto, locat-ed between Casa da Música, Boavista and the near Metro Station. Followed by the conception of a set of housing buildings integrated in this same area.

This exercise was conditioned by a set of per-requisites that guided the proposal (one example of those is the creation of a direct connection be-tween the metro station and Casa da Música). The main idea was to clearly define this two blocks, very distinct in scale and integrate them in the ex-isting urban matrix. Another crucial decision was the creation of a plaza, closely related to the metro station, providing an ample reunion space for the public users of the services located nearby. The goal was for this pla-za to become an amphitheater for public performances and gatherings.

The sector chosen for the construction of the residential buildings is composed of two lots in the southern block allowing for the construc-tion of two separate volumes, one that faces Avenida de França while the other faces the proposed “A” street. Both volumes have a reced-ed ground floor occupied by commerce and by the residential entrances.

The base module used in both buildings was first developed for the one fac-ing Avenida de França, as it was a special privileged case with four free fa-cades allowing for the conception of apartments with two fronts each, with the living room occupying the corner. This module was afterwards implemented on the other volume with some adaptations necessary due to it being lengthier. The proposed facades attempt to show the internal structure of the building as well as emphasize the unity of the whole block.

FAUP Laboratory- Extension of the Architecture Faculty of the University of Porto

The following proposal was developed, in the frame of the Project IV discipline in the Architecture Faculty of University of Porto (FAUP). The program was an extension of the existing faculty called “FAUP Laboratory” and consisted of one large auditorium for 600 people, six smaller ones for 50 people each, two multipurpose spaces with 600m2 each, as well as some smaller sized divisions.

This project sought to embrace the terrain, turning itself inwards promoting a calm working environment in an ample green space inspired by the clois-ters of the cloisters of traditional medieval universities, however it doesn’t cut itself off completely from the surroundings allowing for a plentiful view of the river Douro and Gaia on the other side. Furthermore, this proposal attempts to guarantee the continuity of the existing exterior space and the new one, organizing the whole composition around a system of green spaces.

Regarding the buildings internal organization it revolves around a monumen-tal staircase located in the center of the volume, with organic and fluid cir-culation and reunion areas. The auditoriums are concentrated on the ground floor, the smaller spaces of the program such as the teacher’s offices and recreation areas on the second, and the whole third floor is occupied by the two multipurpose spaces, that are combined to create a single continuous space without internal wall allowing for a variety of possible configurations.

Tanatorium - Go Architecture Competition 2012 in collaboration with Patrícia Quintas e Luís Correia

Every culture and religion has its own interpretation and ways of dealing with death, however there are certain aspects that are shared between the majority. With this in mind, we sought to base our proposal on sev-eral universal concepts such as the infinite and the transcendence of life.

The fundamental idea, behind the main form is the creation of spi-ral-shaped route that goes progressively from the public areas, to the more private ones. The spiral, on the one hand, symbolizes the infinite while the route around the interior garden, on the other, symbolizes the voy-age of life, allowing at the same time a moment of calm and reflection.

The endpoint of this path is the farewell room, which due to its importance clearly stands out from the rest of the composition. This room is located on the lowest point of the project being illuminated only from above by the monumen-tal light chimney, pretending to be metaphor for the transcendence of the soul. The base of the volume is completely closed to the exteri-or, respecting the private and intimate character of the program.

Regarding the proposed materials, their antagonistic colors (black and white) and contrasting textures (smooth and rugged surfaces) are meant to emphasize the different spaces and at the same time symbolize the life/death dichotomy that is needed for building of this nature. This idea is accentuated even further by the light that diminishes as we proceed from the public spaces to the private ones.

Public Workshop-Go Architecture Competition 2013 in collaboration with Afonso Portela and Joana Batel The program of this competition consisted of 10 small public workshop cells, a shop, a small reunion space/auditorium, as well as an ample exterior space with the capacity to host open air cinema events. The intention of this program was to promote and improve this somewhat detached area of the city of Porto.

Our proposal aims to create a public space that encourages the contact be-tween the costumers and the people working in the workshop cells. The idea of the interior spaces attempts to create a typological correspondence to the flexibility of the building required. The shape and organization is de-termined by the elongated shape of the terrain, the main street that de-fines it and the connections created between this street and existing smaller paths, creating “knots” of fluxes between the buildings and the public space.

We found this social and public aspect of the project very interest-ing and relevant, especially the open air cinema, and as such we de-cided to materialize it in an iconic fashion, thus we came with the idea of a monumental projection wall that defines the place.

The main volume, the only one with a higher ceiling, stands out from the rest of the composition, revealing its importance as a reception/ reunion space. The workshop cells can be joined to form bigger spaces, and are have direct connection with the public space trough sliding windows. The creation of viewpoints and green spaces on top of the buildings promotes even further the contact between the citizens and the activities that will take place there.

AEFAUP Bar-Barraka da Queima Competition 2014in collaboration with Patrícia Quintas

The Queima das Fitas is a celebration of the union of the academic com-munity of Porto and is characterized by its vitality and randomness that is expressed by the numerous fluxes of people and the constant aggrega-tion and desegregation of groups of students without an apparent logic.

In the conception of this proposition for the AEFAUP Bar we wanted to emphasize this spontaneous and chaotic character of this celebration. As such, we sought inspiration in the strong sense of community, reunion and spontaneity present in the South-American slums. Furthermore, the frenetic and somewhat disorganized construction of the different bars and spaces of the Queima is similar to the fragmented evolution of the favela, but in both cases the global result presents a strong uniformity.

Project Laboratory

This work was developed as a possible answer to the lack of a space dedicated to the practice of natural science experiments in the Porto Musical Conservatory, with the intention to ap-ply for the Foundation Ilídio Pereira-Science at School prize.

The idea was to create a small temporary building with the necessary conditions for the execution of small scale phys-ics and chemistry experiments, as well as other school activi-ties for students between 6 and 12 years old. The chosen con-struction system used simple metal girders and H-beams, while the finishing materials were wooden boards and PLADUR.

Bearing in mind the possible construction site as well as the public charac-ter of the laboratory the goal was to have the volume as open as possible, having only the north facade enclosed due some functionality concerns.

The flat roof has a small garden-like space for the practice of botan-ics, and a small space dedicated for meteorological experiments and some contemplation. It is important to mention the possibility of in-stalling solar panels that can serve as small blinders against the sun.

Concerning the interior the intention was for it to have versatility, thus we equated the furniture and building dimensions to allow for several different configurations. The chosen colour were a way of showing the different subjects that would be taught (physics, chemistry, geology, and musical instruments repairs) as well as to appeal to the young public.

Tree inspired public space (CAAD Discipline FAUP)

The main concern while elaborating this proposal was to foster the use of the large exterior space available and at the same time try to strengthen its relationship with the surrounding vegetation.

The project consist of a fabric material attached to a metal structure that emulates the form of a forest canopy promoting a better dialogue between the city and the nearby Botanic Garden. To achieve this the Grasshopper plug in from studio Morphocode is used in order to ap-ply L-system to the metallic structure that replicates the growth of trees.

The created shape has a clearly functional side as shel-ter against the elements but also has sculptural value that might allow it to become a known meeting and reunion point.
