Worry Less...Seek First

“Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span?” No, indeed we can’t. But evidence does suggest that worrying can subtract time from our life span! Clearly, we are not meant to worry. It’s not healthy and it’s not useful. But for many of us, it’s quite difficult not to be anxious and concerned about matters that are important to us. So what is the secret to letting go of this unnecessary anxiety?

Jesus gives us an answer. “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides.” In other words, our focus should be on being faithful followers of God. When we put our trust in the providence of the One who “clothes the grass of the field,” and stop trying to rely on our own (meager) powers, then things will be taken care of: “Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.”

Part of the secret here, of course, is coming to accept God’s will for us, even when it doesn’t perfectly match what we may have been envisioning. There is a kind of surrender involved that puts God’s plan first. Instead of getting worked up that things aren’t going our way, this kind of reliance upon God enables us to relax and accept the way things are going. The great spiritual writer, Jean-Pierre de Caussade, put in well in his work, Abandonment to Divine Providence, when he said, “To escape the distress caused by regret for the past or fear about the future, this is the rule to follow: leave the past to the infinite mercy of God, the future to His good Providence, give the present wholly to His love by being faithful to His grace.” God takes care of the birds, the flowers, even the grass! He will also take care of us.

Stewardship Bulletin Reflection 3rd Sunday of Easter

www.catholicsteward.com

Today’s Gospel Reading recounts Jesus’ appearance to two disciples who were on the road to Emmaus. In various scriptural passages, there are 12 accounts of Jesus appearing in the flesh a few times to just one person, but once to 500 people (1 Corinthians 15:6). What is interesting about today’s account is the two, although evidently familiar with the Lord, do not recognize Him (“...their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.”).

This is a challenge for us today as well. St. Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa) once wrote, “I see Jesus in every human being. I say to myself, this is hungry Jesus; I must feed him. This is sick Jesus. This one has leprosy or gangrene; I must wash him and tend to him. I serve because I love Jesus.” That should be our motivation for serving, for being a disciple, for practicing stewardship.

Like the two disciples going to Emmaus we must be alert and prepared to see Jesus in places we least imagine Him. Stewardship is, of course, a two-sided perspective. Not only do we need to seek and search for Jesus in others and then serve, but also others need to see and recognize Jesus in us.

If we properly live out our faith, we, too, may experience the sense of joy and ecstasy the two disciples found in today’s Gospel: “Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened Scriptures to us?” Jesus speaks to us every day, but we must learn to listen.

The original Greek word for what we read as “throes of death” could also be translated as “the birth pains of death.” Jesus’ resurrection is as if He was in the womb, and being raised in this way He was born to new life. That is what we, too, can expect and hope for.

Prayer, Formation, & Parish EventsFinancial Stewardship

The disciples on the road to Emmaus walked and talked with Jesus all day long, but it was not until they offered Him

hospitality and He blessed and broke the bread that they recognized Him. Simple acts of loving kindness still reveal

the presence of God in our midst.

Casting Lots for the Seamless Garment (John 19:23-4)

What are the Real Questions?Did I offer peace today? Did I bring a smile to someone’s face? Did I say words of healing? Did I let go of my anger and resentment? Did I forgive? Did I love? These are the real questions. I must trust that the little bit of love that I sow now will bear many fruits, here in this world and the life to come. (By Henri Nouwen)

Religious EducationConfirmation - Sacrament of Initiation

When Jesus comes to us how does he come? Every time we receive the sacraments Jesus comes to us and there is a visible sign of Jesus coming to us invisibly through His sacrament. Just as the Holy Spirit came mightily upon David when he was anointed with oil by Samuel, and just as Jesus used the matter of clay and water for the healing of the blind man, Jesus comes to us in each sacrament when matter is used together with prayer and we call the prayer the “form.” So the matter and form of every sacrament is the visible sign of Jesus coming to us invisibly but powerfully in the sacrament.

1) In the Sacrament of Baptism the matter is water which is poured over the head to baptize - symbolizing washing - and the form is “Name, I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” which is prayed at the same time as the water is poured.

2) In the Sacrament of Confirmation the matter is the bishop using his thumb to anoint the forehead with the oil of chrism (clarified by Pope Paul VI in 1971). The form is “Name, be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.”

3) In the Sacrament of the Eucharist the matter is bread made from wheat and wine fermented from grapes. The form is the words of the consecration at Mass over the bread and wine, “Take this all of you and eat it, this is my Body which will be given up for you. Take this all of you and drink from it: this is the cup of my Blood, the Blood of the new and everlasting Covenant...” (Fr. Tommy Lane)

This Thursday, 141 students will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. This will complete their full initiation into the Church - the third Sacrament of Initiation. Please keep the students, parents and sponsors in your thoughts and prayers. What a future our faith holds with this many young people receiving the Gifts of the Holy Spirit!

donde te has escondido amado y me dejaste lamentandome?
