Dear students and teachers,
Nice to meet you again! This autumn another Key to English has arrived
at your school. You already know that this textbook is written by a group of Lithuanian authors who are teachers of English. What is more, it belongs to ŠOK series of textbooks, that uses relations between all the textbooks in the same form.
We hope that Key to English 6 will help you to learn the English language and make your learning easy, interesting and enjoyable. But don’t forget that you can learn English outside your classroom. Reading books and watching films in English, writing letters to your penfriends, chatting with teenagers from all over the world, listening to music and travelling abroad can make you a successful language learner. We wish you luck in using and developing the knowledge you have got in the English lessons.

How Arthur Became the King of England
Long long ago there was a great stone with a sword in it. Th e stone stood near the greatest cathedral of London. Th ere were words on the sword “Who pulls out the sword is the King of England”. All the knights wanted to become the King of England. Th ey travelled to London and had a competition. Th e winner tried to pull the sword but nobody could move it.
One day Sir Ector with his two sons Kay and Arthur went to the competition in London. When they arrived Kay noticed that he had forgotten his sword. Sir Ector asked Arthur to go back home and bring Kay’s sword. Arthur wasn’t very happy but he had to listen to his father. On his way home he saw a sword in the stone.
“I can borrow this sword for my brother,” thought Arthur and pulled it out.
Sir Ector was very surprised to see Arthur back so soon. When he saw the sword he was even more surprised, “Where did you get this sword, Arthur?”
“I can show you,” answered Arthur. Sir Ector and Kay followed him.
“Th e sword was in this stone,” and with these words Arthur put the sword back into the stone.
“Kay, try to pull out the sword,” said Sir Ector. Kay took the sword with two hands and tried as hard as he could, but the sword didn’t move.
“I can’t, father,” said Kay.“Now you, Arthur.” Arthur took the sword with one hand
and pulled it out easily. Sir Ector knelt in front of Arthur and said, “Arthur, you are
not my son. You are King Pendragon’s son and now you are the King of England.”
King Arthur was the great King of England. He was an honest and brave king and people respected and loved him. Th ere are a lot of legends about King Arthur, his magic sword and the adventures of his friends – the Knights of the Round Table.

Answer the questions.
1. What was the date? 2. What was Scrooge’s favourite word about Christmas? 3. What does the word humbug mean? 4. What did Fred say about Christmas? 5. What was the most important thing for Scrooge?
It was Christmas Eve, the twenty-fourth of December, the evening before Christmas Day. Old Scrooge was busy in his offi ce. It was very cold. Th e door of Scrooge’s offi ce was open so he could watch his clerk. Th e clerk worked in a tiny cold room. Scrooge had a small fi re but the clerk’s fi re was even smaller. He could not add coal because Scrooge kept it in his room.
“Merry Christmas, uncle!” cried a happy voice. It was the voice of Scrooge’s nephew Fred.
“Bah!” said Scrooge. “Humbug!” “Do you say that Christmas is a humbug,
uncle? You don’t mean that, do you?”“Yes, I do! Merry Christmas! Bah! You are
too poor to be merry!”“Oh,” said nephew, “I am poor but you are
rich. So why aren’t you merry?”Scrooge didn’t have a better answer than,
“Humbug!” “Don’t be angry!” said Fred.“I can only feel angry when I live in the
world of fools. What is Christmas time for you? It’s only spending more money than you have! Every Christmas you become a year older but not richer! I think,” said Scrooge angrily, “that everyone who goes about saying ‘Merry Christmas!’ is a fool!”
“Uncle!” said the nephew.“Nephew!” said the uncle. “Celebrate your
Christmas in the way you like and I will celebrate it the way I like!”
Adapted from Charles Dickens
“Celebrate it?” said Fred. “But you never celebrate Christmas!”
“And I am right because it’s a humbug! What’s the good of Christmas?”
“Christmas is a good, kind and pleasant time. It’s the only time in the year when men and women open their hearts. Even if you don’t get gold or silver Christmas makes everyone happy. And I say ‘Merry Christmas!”
“Humbug!” said Scrooge.“Don’t be angry, uncle. Come and have
dinner with us tomorrow.”“Certainly not!” said Scrooge. “Good
aft ernoon!”“But I don’t want anything from you. Why
can’t we be friends?”“Good aft ernoon!” said Scrooge.“I am sorry that you won’t join us. Because
it’s Christmas and I want to be a kind nephew and keep my kind Christmas feelings. So, merry Christmas, uncle.”
“Good aft ernoon!” said Scrooge.“And a happy New Year!”“Good aft ernoon!” said Scrooge.Fred stopped at the door to say ‘Merry
Christmas!’ to the clerk who answered warmly, “Merry Christmas to you!”

Anglų kalbos sakinio žodžių tvarka yra tokia: veiksnys – tarinys – papildinys – aplinkybės
Kas? Ką veikia? Ką? / Ko? Kam? Kaip? Kur? Kada?
The twins sing the song for the dog loudly in the bedroom at night.
Anglų kalbos sakinio žodžių tvarka daug griežtesnė negu lietuvių kalbos. Ją keisti galima tik pagal griežtai nustatytas taisykles, nes tada keičiasi ir sakinio prasmė.
The twins sing for the dogs. Dvynukai dainuoja šunims. The dogs sing for the twins. Šunys dainuoja dvynukams.
Laiko aplinkybes galima vartoti sakinio pradžioje ar pabaigoje nekeičiant sakinio prasmės.
At night the twins sing the alphabet for their dog loudly in the bedroom. The twins sing the alphabet for their dog loudly in the bedroom at night.
Papildiniai, atsakantys į klausimus ką? ir kam?, gali būti sukeičiami vietomis:
Jei papildinys, atsakantis į klausimą kam?, sakinyje vartojamas be prielinksnių, jis eina prieš papildinį, atsakantį į klausimą ką?
kam? ką?
Tom showed me your letter.
I bought my sister a new skirt.
Jei papildinys, atsakantis į klausimą kam?, sakinyje vartojamas su prielinksniais to arba for, jis eina po papildinio, atsakančio į klausimą ką?
ką? Kam?
Tom showed your letter to me.
I bought a new skirt for my sister.
Anglų kalbos sakiniuose negalima praleisti veiksmažodžio to be ir sakinio veiksnio.
Aš – mokinė. I am a student. Neisiu į mokyklą. I won’t go to school.
