“…without a place like The Saban Free Clinic, I really don’t know what we would do…”Lewis N.* never thought he would find himself walking through the doors of The Saban Free Clinic.

A college graduate, Lewis experienced years of success as a talent manager. In 2007, he decided to follow his dreams and start his own talent management company. He invested everything he had into the company. He had to make the tough decision between keeping his company afloat or keep his health insurance. In need of medical care, he did a web search and came across the Clinic. “I didn’t know about The Los Angeles Free Clinic - that’s what it was called at the time. I didn’t know what I was going to find.” But, as he notes, “I was just really surprised. When I stepped in, it looked just like any other place I have ever gone to for my health care needs.” Lewis is grateful for the “incredible quality care” he has received from Dr. Mark Benor and Dr. Grace Lee, “I feel like I know them. I feel like they know me. They call me by my name. I am not a number.”

He is thankful that the Clinic has helped keep him alive. During his first visit to the Clinic, he let his provider know his family had a history of high cholesterol. A check of his cholesterol found that it was indeed high and required medication to regulate it. If not for the Clinic, Lewis would not receive the medication he needs and could possibly be facing life-threatening conditions. “That cholesterol medication is $400 and I really cannot afford that ... Getting the medication and then the subsequent follow up check-ups, I think that’s what keeps me alive today.”

Lewis now gives back to the Clinic as a member of the Community Advisory Board (CAB). He actively attends meetings three times a year where he joins a group of fellow patients, Clinic staff and Board Members who are all involved in helping shape the Clinic’s policies, procedures and operations. He gladly shares his experiences as a patient and promotes the Clinic’s services and programs to the community because he knows others may find themselves in the same situation he found himself in 2007. “To anyone who thinks that health care is not their concern because they are gainfully employed or their parents are able to afford health care, I want them to look at me. I want them to listen to me. Things happen. And when things happen, we need a safety net.”

* Name changed to protect patient’s confidentiality.

Our LeadershipGratitude, thanks and appreciation. Every day, patients express these sentiments to the hard-working staff at The Saban Free Clinic. These are the very same sentiments we would like to express to you—our supporters—who have continued to stand by our mission and the work that we do. Your generosity enables us to continue to provide the services that our patients are grateful for, and so, we thank you.

Although the 2010 Fiscal Year presented many challenges with the continuing economic crisis and State budget cuts, it was an exciting year for us and community clinics alike. History was made in March with the passage and signing of the Affordable Care Act, paving the way towards health care reform. Before we celebrate, we remind you that true reform and relief are still years away. Until reform is fully implemented, your support will help us serve the tens of thousands who rely on the Clinic as their medical home.

In the last year, many organizations that provide vital services to the community made cuts, or worse, ceased to exist. Fortunately, we kept from cutting services or staff. The Clinic’s Board, leadership, staff and volunteers worked hard to enhance services, and accomplish several achievements. The opening of our School Based Health Center at Hollywood High School and the adoption of a new mission statement, vision and set of strategic directions are just two of the accomplishments we are pleased to share on page 4.

Looking ahead to the 2011 Fiscal Year, we are prepared to face challenges and opportunities. After a record 100-day stalemate, the State budget was finally passed and signed. Unfortunately, it was a version of the budget with major cuts in funding for community clinics yet again. Having completed a fiscal year in which we met the challenges of severe budget cuts with an expansion of services, we are confident that we will do that again.

We will once again dig deep and work diligently to deliver the services our community needs. Your commitment to The Saban Free Clinic means more to us than ever before. Thank you for your support.

HighlightsWith the support of partners and donors, The Saban Free Clinic achieved several significant accomplishements focused on improving the patient experience. Despite the many challenges faced throughout the fiscal year, the Clinic remained committed to its mission. We are pleased to share the following highlights during the 2010 Fiscal Year, which illustrate the many achievements that would not have been possible without our staff, volunteers, Board of Directors, Friends of The Saban Free Clinic, community partners, and most importantly, our donors.

• The Clinic provided a total of 89,516 patient visits to 21,116 unique clients, 99% of whom reported to be living at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level, which for a family of four is less than $44,100 annually. The Clinic performed over 2,000 Rapid HIV tests between July 2009 and June 2010 as one of few community clinics in Los Angeles County to provide this service where test results are ready in under 30 minutes.• Adopted a new mission statement, vision and strategic directions focused on the medical home model in an effort to sustainably deliver the comprehensive, high-quality health care and human services the Clinic has provided to the community in a caring environment since 1967.• Through a partnership with Kaiser Permanente, opened the School Based Health Center at Hollywood High School in April, which provides medical and behavioral health services to students.• Implemented a patient wristband system to improve on patients’ safety and confidentiality during a visit. The wristbands verify a patient’s identity throughout their Clinic experience, helping streamline the process from registration to discharge.• Administered 4,000 H1N1 flu vaccines in response to the H1N1 epidemic. • Became one of six California clinics to receive funding for and participate in the Well-Integrated Screening and Evaluation for Women Across the Nation (WISEWOMAN) program. WISEWOMAN targets women and screens for cardiovascular disease risk factors and addresses diet, exercise and risk factor modification.• Accepted into a Building Clinic Capacity for Quality (BCCQ) learning collaborative to help the Clinic move towards Electronic Health Records.• Adopted Health Port as the system to manage billing and patient visit data, another crucial step towards Electronic Health Records.• Implemented practices and systems from the Early Development Screening and Intervention (EDSI) learning collaborative, which promotes the use of evidence-based strategies to achieve positive developmental outcomes for children ages 0-5 years with structured screeening for developmental and psychological problems.• Introduced monthly group visits for diabetic patients. A check of the patients’ vitals is performed, accompanied by an education session and peer support. Limited to 10 participants per visit, the education sessions focus on topics relevant to the care of the whole person. • Reinvigorated the Community Advisory Board (CAB), which is a collaborative of patients who provide feedback to Clinic staff to positively influence the operations and improve the overall patient experience at the Clinic.

Planned GivingA Planned Gift Ensures a Future

Nothing can secure and perpetuate The Saban Free Clinic’s mission like planned gifts. Planned giving ensures that the programs and services we offer continue to improve the lives of children, families, seniors and individuals in need of affordable quality medical care, dental care and social services for many years to come.

By joining The Saban Free Clinic’s Forever Free Legacy Circle, you guarantee that a patient’s access to their medical home remains “a right, not a privilege.” Planned gifts are a way to ensure your wishes are fulfilled and your legacy is carried on, creating or updating your will is a must.

Planning a gift is simple and uncomplicated.

Planned giving offers many benefits to the donor; to the charitable organization and it is tax wise. Some common ways to fund a planned gift are:

• Cash and real estate• Life insurance and retirement plans, e.g., 401k, 403b• Partnership interests and securities/stock • Tangible personal property

If you are interested in gift plans that return income to you, consider any of the following options:

• Charitable gift annuities• Pooled income funds • Charitable remainder unitrusts and annuities

Some of the tax benefits you can receive for supporting and generously giving to The Saban Free Clinic are:

• On securities or real estate: you can receive a charitable deduction for the full market value of the asset, and pay no capital gains tax on the transfer

• On a life-income gift: you can receive a tax deduction for the full, fair market value of the assets contributed, minus the present value of the income interest retained. If you fund your gift with appreciated property you pay no upfront capital gains tax on the transfer

• A bequest, a beneficiary designation in a life insurance policy or retirement account are exempt from estate tax

Your Forever Free Legacy gift ensures a future for the Clinic and makes a difference for years to come.

The Forever Free Legacy Circle is a group of donors whose planned gifts help to extend the future and mission of The Saban Free Clinic. Please consult your financial advisor to tailor a gift that fits your needs and expresses your wishes and concerns. Planned gifts from caring donors like you help us keep our doors open to those in our community who need our services the most. For further information about the Forever Free Legacy Circle, contact Shannon Cisch at [email protected] or call 323-330-1670.

Expanding the Clinic’s Reach: Serving the Needs of Students at Hollywood High SchoolThanks to a partnership with Kaiser Permanente, The Saban Free Clinic opened its doors on the Hollywood High School campus in April 2010. The School-Based Health Center at Hollywood High School provides students with medical and behavioral health services, as well as health education. Conveniently located, the Clinic provides access to a variety of services including, sports physicals, nutrition counseling, vision screening, immunizations, counseling, and sensitive services including pregnancy testing and sexually transmitted infection treatment.

The Clinic currently provides medical services on Mondays and Thursdays, and behavioral health services on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The Clinic has two fully-equipped medical exam rooms, lab and counseling room. The Los Angeles Unified School District recognized that the community surrounding Hollywood High School could benefit from the Clinic’s services. Plans have been put in place to expand the health center on the campus. Renovation of the school’s shop area has begun and it will house the new and expanded Clinic site, which will be completed and serving not just students, but the whole community, by 2012.

“Since the Clinic opened its doors on campus, I’ve noticed more students have begun to embrace their health. It is because they are comforted in knowing they have somewhere to turn for their health care needs. The students are so incredibly thankful for the access to great quality care and services The

Saban Free Clinic provides.”
