The Historical Society’s Vision

One of Newport’s best assets is its rich and prominent history, and that history is embedded in

the collections of the Newport Historical Society.

Newport’s nearly 400‐year history, combined with the survival of much of the City’s built

environment and the important role Newport played in a constellation of significant American

events, justifies a designation as one of America’s most historic cities. Over 150 years of

collecting has resulted in holdings that embody Newport’s stories, but this history, and the

collections at the NHS, are not generally well known. The NHS envisions growing its capacity:

to assist our community in developing a firm understanding of the history of Newport and its

prominent position in American history, and to be ready to bring this history to a national and

international audience.

This awareness will develop a pride of place for Newporters that will serve to bolster the

quality of life and contribute to the economic health of the City today. The NHS collections –

properties, objects, art, photographs and documents – are an essential resource for our

illustrious and important American city.

A Proposed Business Model for a More Effective Newport Historical Society

The Newport Historical Society believes that in we can increase our ability to serve and our

impact by focusing specific attention on our unique asset – the collections – and on

maintenance, preservation and accessibility for both scholars and the public.

We have three principal goals for our development:

1. Access. By allowing, supporting, and encouraging scholarship about Newport, and

collecting, collating and storing it, we can then provide this scholarship to an increase‐

ingly interested public. Think of us as an hourglass: we open our collections to scholar

ship by a broad group of thinkers, collate and organize the scholarship in the center,

and then disperse it through a broad variety of methods.

2. Collaboration. Our second principle for continued growth is that we will do better:

leverage more funds, create more awareness in the community, get more

comprehensive input, and spend less, whenever we are able to work in collaboration

with other institutions with similar interest areas, audiences, or needs.

3. Sustainability. The NHS believes that it must be comfortably sustainable so that it can

devote staff resources directly to the mission. The Historical Society has established

well‐diversified income streams. However, it does not currently retain a reserve fund

and therefore is dependent on each stream doing well each year. Increased earned

income combined with a larger endowment will allow the NHS to budget for a

growing operating reserve.

Achievements to Date

The Historical Society has been working towards a revitalized future since 2006. Building on

strategic goals to expand audiences, establish professional management for all collections and

move towards financial sustainability, the NHS has:

Addressed two decades of delayed maintenance at all five historic properties.

Revitalized the Museum of Newport History, and began a program of satellite

and temporary exhibitions.

Revamped its website and social media program and established online

visitation to 3,500+ each month.

Completely reinvented the Newport Antiques Show.

Established a profitable Museum Store.

Increased visitation has increased from under 10,000 to over 70,000 (with some

years exceeding 100,000).

Expanded its calendar of scholarly and public history programming.

Maintained the production of Newport History, its scholarly journal.

Built on the successful Buchanan‐Burnham internship program to host 4‐9

graduate interns in history, collections and public history each year.

Have made significant progess in putting collections information online, the

only Newport cultural institution to do so.

Created the Explore Newport History mobile app.

Collaborative efforts have built steadily from a small base in 2007; these include:

A programmatic collaboration with the Newport Restoration Foundation to

produce Newport History Tours.

A marketing collaborative among five arts and cultural organizations in

Newport’s historic downtown: The Old Quarter.

Newportal, a project which involves five local organizations working to create a

collaborative discovery tool for Newport collections.

Cultural Catalysts: Catalyzing Culture, which is a new effort championed by

the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities and funded by the van Beuren

Foundation to develop a City‐wide platform, to raise awareness of, and find a

broader audience for Newport’s history.

The Spectacle of Toleration, a project about religious tolerance and diversity in

collaboration with Brown and Salve Regina Universities, the Rhode Island

Historical Society, and the George Washington Institute for Religious Freedom.

Challenging the Future Campaign

The NHS has developed a modest capital campaign to prepare the organization to meet the

goals it has set for itself. The campaign is infrastructure and endowment‐based, and focused

on building our capacity to provide access to our collections.

Funding through this capital campaign will be directed toward:

Development of a modern Resource Center at 82 Touro Street for the study,

interpretation and understanding of Newport’s history.

Creation of funds to support the functions at NHS that are most directly responsible

for providing public access to Newport’s history: The Curatorial and Education

Departments.

A re‐presentation of its Museum store to create a more vibrant presence at the Brick

Market, including increased square footage for retail opportunities.

Seasonal Walking Tours & Historic Site Tours

Newport History Walking Tours July 2012 through June 2013 had an attendance of 1,377 for 296 tours.

The attendance for Newport Historical Society’s guided historic site tours July 2012 through June 2013 was 303.

Group Tours The NHS provided private group tours July 2012 through June 2013 with a total attendance of 1,298 for 48 tours.

Additional Programs Attendance for other public programs between for the fiscal year totaled 2,177 at 38 programs. This number does not

include the following programs and their attendance figures: NHS Newport Antiques Show Preview and the weekend

Show; NHS exhibits; NHS connoisseurs’ tour. This number also does not include groups and others who enjoyed our

properties through rental agreements (e.g., Island Moving Company).

COLLECTIONS

ACCESS / ACCESSIONS In addition to our online catalog, which presents over 6,065 objects, photographs and manuscript collections, the

Historical Society now has 12 finding aids on RIAMCO, the Rhode Island Archival and Manuscript Collections

Online. This allows for greater accessibility for the scholarly community through industry‐standard finding aids on

a state‐wide repository.

We are a founding institution of Newportal, a collaborative project designed to provide online access to Newportʹs

archival collections, which received a $10,000 planning grant from the Rhode Island Foundation.

In the past year, NHS staff have researched and reassigned accession numbers to almost 350 items: primarily objects

but also photographs and manuscripts. In the process of updating and refining organization and access to collections,

over 200 ʺfound in collectionʺ items were cataloged that were previously unrecorded.

With the expansion of access and information about NHS collections has come increased interest from across the

country. Newport Historical Society items have appeared in at least five extra‐institutional exhibits this year, including

Capturing the Cup: Yacht Racing During the Gilded Age at the Flagler Museum in Palm Springs, Florida and A Lively

Experiment: Rhode Islandʹs Colonial Charter at the Rhode Island Statehouse.

processing is underway. This spreadsheet contains many unprocessed or unarranged collections, and may contain

incomplete information or even inaccuracies; but it is the first time in NHS history that a comprehensive manuscript

http://newporthistoryapp.com This web based app is accessible with any internet‐capable device, including desktop computers. It synthesizes

educational content, such as walking tours and other scholarship, with collections items such as historical photographs.

The appʹs GPS enabled interactive map pinpoints nearby historic sites. For everyone!

The Common Burying Ground Mapping Project

http://j.mp/buryinggroundmap The online map marks and identifies gravestones within the burying ground. Thus far, approximately 700 of the 7,900

gravestones have been added. Primarily intended to map religious affiliation within the burying ground, icons on the

map are color‐coded according to the deceased’s religious affiliation. Primarily for researchers and scholars, but could also

be enjoyed by the enthusiastic cemetery visitor.

This year has also brought about a new program of virtual exhibits on our App, Explore Newport History. The exhibits in

our app have allowed us to tell more comprehensive stories surrounding a particular topic. We are no longer confined to

the physical limitations of space at our rotating gallery space at the Brick Market. This year, both of our exhibits at the

Museum of Newport History had extended content that the public could visit to supplement their experience. The online

exhibits remain available even after the physical exhibit is uninstalled, allowing our scholarship to be temporally

independent. Additionally, those unable to visit the museum exhibit can enjoy our them without having to be in

Newport, allowing us to reach a broader audience.

As a result of the success of supplementing Museum exhibits in the App, this summer we created a number of born‐

digital exhibits. These new exhibits do not support or supplement another physical exhibit, but are exhibits in their own

right. This platform allows interns to complete extensive and thoughtful research using NHS collections, without the

hindrance of physical limitations and other exhibition logistics.

THE BRICK MARKET: MUSEUM & SHOP

The Brick Market: Museum & Shop is an integrated activity that builds audiences, educates the public and generates

revenue for the Newport Historical Society. In the 2012‐2013 fiscal year, gross retail saw a 20% boost with a $40,000

increase over 2011‐2012. This put total revenue for the Brick Market in excess of $250,000 which also included a 10%

increase in museum admissions. This growth in revenue is credited to the addition of new, and expansion of existing,

departments and product categories in our society store, and to the involved Museum visitor Staffing has also played a vital role in our growth. Cross‐training Museum staff within the Education Department has

proven successful in informing visitors to the Brick Market on both our retail and educational offerings, and has

permitted the Brick Market to expand its hours of operation.

IN THE MEDIA 2012‐13

During the 2012‐2013 fiscal year, the Newport Historical Society expanded media coverage both regionally and

nationally. Most of the coverage was obtained through print publications such as newspapers and magazines. In 2012,

the NHS received groundbreaking television coverage thanks to a feature on the popular PBS television show History

Detectives, and through a news spot on NBC 10 with Gene Valicenti. Additional media exposure was received through

the Newport Antiques Show and partnerships such as Rhody Ramble and a loan item for the exhibit Capturing the Cup:

Yacht Racing During the Gilded Age at the Flagler Museum in Palm Beach. Our Hurricane Sandy photograph project was

featured on WPRI news with meteorologist T. J. Del Santo. That feature led us to be Pin of the Day on History Pin, a

popular historical photograph mapping site.
