Practice Background

Arkitek Punca Cipta is a design-focused architecture practice established in 1995 in KualaTerengganu, a small town at the heart of East Coast Malaysia. Since October 2018, thefirm was corporatized into Arkitek Punca Cipta Sdn Bhd with the joining new directors andopening of offices in Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and KotaBharu.

Since our foundation, we have established ourselves with a wide range of projectexperience in the building industry. We remain steadfast to our founding principal that nojob is too small. By not limiting our definition, we are now experienced in diverse projects ofdiffering scale; from product packaging, furniture design, single houses and commercialdevelopments to large industrial complex. Our expertise in conservation and traditionaltimber architecture, and the completion of a few significant heritage and conservationprojects was awarded when in July 2017 we were declared as recipient of the Belian Awardfor the Commercial and Public Building category of the Malaysian Wood Award 2017 forRestoration of Rumah Warisan Haji Su in Losong Terengganu.

The studio environment that we maintained in our practice allow for collaboration betweenarchitects, clients, consultants and builders. We are passionate in delivering value-addeddesign with the economically optimized technical solutions; some that are outright down toearth.

Approach

We appreciate that architecture service is both expression of affluence and socialresponsibility. It sync with our philosophy that no job is too small and the social servicesegment had at times provided us with unique experience and satisfaction. One may findour product at the extreme end of industrial robustness and intricate ornamentation; fromlarge factories to heritage and conservation.

The End Product

Architecture end product is an amalgam of spaces that eventually house people andmaterial. We try to deliver an end product that pleases the owner and users, providingsafety and protection, responsive to the environment and sensitive to the life-style andculture.

Material and Craftsmanship

We believe in the basics. That architecture is a product of honest use of materials craftedto the appropriate level of craftsmanship. In our architecture, we repeatedly applies thenuances of local material and crafts though at times in symbolic proportion.

APC continuously seeks to document and conserve significant heritage buildings. Masjid Kampung

Dusun was discovered from our field research and we hope for funds to help its restoration.

The rare tiger logo of a quranic khat inscription adorning the main door of Masjid Kampung

Dusun, Jenagor, Hulu Terengganu. The date of 28th Rejab 1326 Hijriah (26 August 1908)as stated on the inscription confirmed this mosque as one of

the earliest surviving mosque in Terengganu.The tiger inscription read

In 1996, the state of Terengganu was tohost the International SilatChampionship, an event bringingtogether proponents of traditionalAsian martial arts from all over theworld. Without a proper facility for suchsports, a new indoor stadia for 3000spectators need to be built urgentlywithin six months. Arkitek Punca Cipta,then a fledgling practice, was appointedto design and foresee the developmenton a fast-track basis. The dedicatedteam of consultants and contractors,working almost 24 hours in the sixmonths period, using pre-fabricatedsuper structure system delivered theproject in time for the event.

The project was awarded the BHP Inaugural High Profile Award in 1997.

Arkitek Punca Cipta was an established consulting architecture firm founded in 1995 as asole proprietor practice. In 2018, the incorporation of Arkitek Punca Cipta SendirianBerhad establishes a merger of Arkitek Punca Cipta and Hazim Architect, both with overtwo decades of practice experience. Arkitek Punca Cipta Sdn Bhd’s key personnel wasnow reinforced with the joining of Ar. Mohd Hazim Mohd Amin and Ar. Mohd Hilmi CheAmani @ Mohd Kamal, in the newly corporatized entity. The merger and introduction of anew generation of directors and the establishment of offices in Kuala Lumpur, KualaTerengganu, Ipoh and Kota Bharu, now enable us to enhance our service capacity to ourclients.

Built in the late 1800s, RumahTengku Teh Dungun, wife of DatoBijaya Sura, was a uniqueexample of an early colonial brickbuilding in the early urbansetting of Kuala Terengganu.Jalan Tok Lam was once thetown’s major business streetlinking directly to the port ofKuala Terengganu. The buildingwas an amalgam of brickstructural façade for a largelytraditional timber house – thebrick section functioning as antrading place and the timbersection as living quarters.

The building was later acquiredto house the office of KualaTerengganu Municipality beforeit was handed over to PersatuanSejarah Malaysia Terengganu.

Built in 1926, Masjid SultanAlaeddin Sulaiman Shah atKampung Bandar, Kuala Langatwas fine surviving example ofearly brick building in Malaya.Studies made during therestoration also revealed manyinteresting advances of the day;use of ferro-cement techniqueand portland cement for thedomes, brick buttressstructures and marseilles rooftiles.

Timber is a transient material. Despite its ephemerality, a well-designed timber building, confirming to the genus of a place,adaptive to its ever changing climate and constructed to theappropriate technology of the day, may well last a long time.Rumah Haji Su in Kampung Losong, Kuala Terengganu stood as atestimony. Two houses; Rumah Bujang Berpeleh Kembar Tiga (builtin 1890s) and Rumah Limas Belanda (built in 1940s) aptly namedafter the dominant roof style, has lasted the ages despite their longand colourful history. Inherited from his family and later owned byHaji Su Abdul Rahman, a shipping magnate in the pre-wars day, thehouses had seen its days of glory and wane. He was on record tohave owned several ships or Perahu Besar plying the sea toSouthern Thai and a steam ship plying south to Singapore.

Rumah Bujang Berpeleh Kembar Tiga was used as a family homeover the many decades since late 1890. The sheer size of thestructure, fitting the social status of its owner created a challenge tothe engineering of its timber structure. This particular house wasbuilt mostly in ‘chengal’ – perhaps the hardiest known wood ofMalaysia. The construction technology was based on the traditionalMalay architecture employing a system of structural connectionknown as ‘tanggam and pasak.’

Rumah Limas Belanda was a later addition constructed in 1941.Surprisingly, not only the typology breaks away from the prevailingRumah Berpeleh style then, the owner had chosen a more modernDutch Hip Roof style, and a ‘baloon-frame’ construction method.Even the interior architecture, breaks away from the traditionalnatural colour to a more vibrant Europeanhues.Rumah Haji Su had stood the test of time. It had seen history of thisnation unfold, from the time of Malay Sultanate, British Rules,Japanese Occupations, and later Malayan Independence. Therestoration would hopefully extend its life for many more longyears.

Locatedon a small site of only0.69 acre bounded by houses,this masjid was proposed toreplace an existing old structureand to provide a larger prayerhall and facilities.

Built in 1926, Masjid SultanAlaeddin Sulaiman Shah atKampung Bandar, Kuala Langatwas fine surviving example ofearly brick building in Malaya.Studies made during therestoration also revealed manyinteresting advances of the day;use of ferro-cement techniqueand portland cement for thedomes, brick buttressstructures and marseilles rooftiles.

Designed by Tengku Hitam, and modeled after MasjidMuhammadiahKelantan, thesupervised by

Kota Bharu, works was

PWD on therequest of the Sultan. It was adorned by 6 types of domes.

Restoration commenced in 2016 and completed in 2018.

Privately funded, the magnificenttimber masjid was built on a man-made island in the lagoon of PulauGajah, Sabak, Pengkalan Chepa,Kelantan.Built almost fully in timber bymaster craftsmen and artisansfrom Japara, it borrows from theprinciples of Javanese TumpangSari, modified to 5-pillars representing the 5 pillars of Islam.

The Masjid Taman Permint wasbuilt to replace a 40 over year oldtimber surau in one of theearliest housing development inKuala Terengganu. Funded fullythrough donations by theresidents and philantrophists,many wishing to remainanonymous, the first phase,consisting of the prayer hall for athousand congregation was duefor completion in early 2019. Thedesign was strikingly simplewhite structure built 3 storey tallto create an overwhelminginterior under an imposing dome.

Designed by BHA Architects, the merger partner of APCSB, themixed commercial and hospitality project, completed in 2011,enhanced the capacity and experience of APCSB in the mixedcommercial development sector.

Development consultancy encompass the full service for thebuilding and interior architecture for the commercial podium retailspaces and food court and the hotel.

AlWaqf Commercial CenterTunjong, Kelantan

Al-Waqf Commercial Center was planned to comprise of two,twenty-storey residential and office tower on top of a commercialpodium in the new township of Bandar Baru Tunjong in Kota BharuKelantan. Work on phase 1 consisting of the residential tower andretail spaceswas completed in January 2019.

APC was invited to submit a proposal to envisage the image anddevelopment component for the TNB headquarters in KualaTerengganu. Development consist of a commercial podium withTNB service center, 2000 pax banquet hall, elevated parking,officesand apartment for TNB staff recreations.
