The Vicar Writes……April 2015
ear FriendsIn the Andalusian town of Villaralto, Judas plays a bigger role in the Easter celebrations even than Jesus. On Maundy Thursday, the townspeople hang out life-‐size, straw figures of Judas over the main streets. After post-‐mass hot chocolate and biscuits on Easter Sunday, the town gather in the streets and join in the ceremonial destruction of these Judas figures.Judas has long been a hate-‐figure in Christian mythology. He represents those parts of all of us which are disloyal, cowardly, easily-‐led and greedy. As the inhabitants of Villaralto lay into the straw images of Judas, they are symbolically expressing anger against him, but also anger against those parts of themselves.Jesus’ way of dealing with human failing was not to be angry about it. We know little about how he felt about Judas but we do know they seemed to have sat close enough to have a private conversation at their last supper together and that he gave him a morsel of bread dipped in wine. These were both signs from a host at such a meal that the recipient was particularly favoured.Perhaps anger is not an appropriate response to our weaknesses and failures. Jesus’ affectionate attitude to Judas when he knew what he was about to do suggests that God’s approach is much gentler, more understanding. Through the death and resurrection of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, we have the sure hope of the forgiveness of sins and the resurrection to eternal life. That’s the Good News we have. If God can forgive us should we not forgive ourselves? And, as a response to God’s great love for us, try our best to follow his commandments?May I take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and holy Easter.Yours in Christ
Our Vision: A family, rooted in Christ, committed to transforming lives by:Gathering as God’s people – Growing more like Jesus – Going out in the power of the Spirit.

Good Friday – the day the Son of God died for youGood Friday is the day on which Jesus died on the cross. He was crucified at 9am in the morning, and died six hours later, at 3pm. It is the most solemn day in the Christian year and is widely marked by the removal of all decorations from churches. In Lutheran churches, the day was marked by the reading of the passion narrative in a gospel, a practice which lies behind ‘The Passions’ composed by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750). Both the St Matthew Passion and the St John Passion have their origins in this observance of Good Friday.
The custom of observing a period of three hours’ devotion from 12 midday to 3 pm on Good Friday goes back to the 18th century. The ‘Three Hours of the Cross’ often take the form of an extended meditation on the ‘Seven Last Words from the Cross’ with periods of silence, prayer or hymn-‐singing.

Music SocietyThe March Meeting of the Music Society took the form of ‘Desert Island Discs’when the ‘castaway’ was Jane Riseborough. We all looked forward to this evening in excited anticipation, knowing Jane’s bubbly personality and we were not disappointed.Jane introduced her first choice of music by saying that even though we were approaching Spring, she was choosing ‘Winter’ from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.Jane’s early employment was at Ericsson Telephones Ltd., employing approx. 4,000 people, and the environment was anything but acceptable, particularly in the Press Shop where the noise and smells were horrendous. She eventually left to attend Pitman’s College in Nottingham to learn the rudiments of shorthand and typing.ln her leisure time Jane joined the Sea Rangers and it was there that she met her best friend, Beryl. The Sea Rangers owned a cabin at the side of the River Trent where they spent happy weekends rowing, swimming and cooking.Jane’s second choice of music was ‘Clare de Lune’.The experience of the Sea Rangers persuaded Jane to join the Wrens. She eventually got posted to Chatham where she became a Marine Wren.Jane’s third choice of music was ‘Sunset’, played by the Band of the Royal Marines.Jane hadn’t been in the Wrens any time at all when she was ‘selected’, with other Wrens, to take part in the Remembrance Service at the Royal Albert Hall which was directed by none other than Ralph Reader. The representatives were quite concerned by the short rehearsal time they were given for such a prestigious occasion but they were all assured that everything would be fine -‐ and it was!!Even the walk down those precipitous steps into the auditorium.Evenings and weekends were often spent in the newly built NAAFI CLUB where the dance cost 6d (pence) which led to Jane’s Fourth Choice, ‘Moonlight Serenade’ played for a romantic last dance.Jane met Bill about this time and, in 1954, became a naval wife. Jane was not very happy as Bill was nearly always at sea, or so it seemed, so he became, ‘Stranger on the Shore’, Jane’s fifth choice.
While posted at Plymouth, Jane and Bill enjoyed walking on Dartmoor and discovering the Source of the River Plym which was merely a marsh. However, Jane did find employment in ‘Fine Tubes Ltd.’ an Engineering Firm. She really enjoyed the social life attached to
Parish of Killay April 201511
the place of work and became a member of the committee. They used to organise trips down the River Tamar and Christmas Festivities.Bill eventually left the Navy and found employment at ‘Sketty Hall’ which housed an engineering company. They also found a spiritual home at St. Martin’s Church and eventually Bill became their ‘Jazz Organist’.Jane’s sixth choice was Phil Harris’ ‘Deck of Cards’ which was remembered by many of the members. This choice must find its way into the Church Magazine as it will revive some fond memories!! Jane found employment at Cefn Coed Hospital where the nursing regime was very different from that of General Hospitals. Jane eventually became affected with arthritis which meant that she was unable to carry on with her favourite pastime of walking which she missed dreadfully.Jane’s 7th Choice was ‘Assault on Beautiful Gorky’ by Shostakovich. However, Jane found an interest to fill her life when she joined the ‘Embroiderers Guild’ which took up much of her time. She also had the family around her and gathered a lovely group of friends which are very supportive. Jane’s final choice was ‘l’ll see you in my dreams’ from ‘Sweet and Lowdown’.Jane’s choice of book to accompany the statutory Bible & Works of Shakespeare was ‘Waterloo Days’ by C.A. Eaton. Jane concluded by setting out a display of Family Photographs and embroidery.Chairperson Barbara Roberts thanked Jane for a very interesting evening with everyone joining in a hearty round of applause!!
Because several members had been unable to attend the earlier meetings in 2015 a brief A.G.M. was held when the following were elected to office:-‐ Chair person -‐Barbara Roberts; Vice-‐Chair -‐ Jane Riseborough; Eric Thomas -‐ Secretary/Treasurer and Pat Stratton, Julie Cole, Margaret Jones and Barbara Thomas -‐ Committee Members.

Ladies GuildOur meeting on March 4th was a visit to Theatre Taliesin to see the Cockett Amateur Operatic Society production of “Swansea Women”, a musical based on life in Rodney Street, Sandfields during the second world war.The story told of the effect of the war on the lives of several families; of a mother losing her only son, of another whose son was believed drowned but returned home shell shocked, the birth of a baby to another, and the effect of the arrival of American GI’s in Swansea. Some members found the show very moving. It was very well produced, the singing, dancing and music were all excellent. Well done Cockett A O S.
V
Following in the theme of American GIs, our speaker the following week, 11th March, was John Powell whose talk was entitled “Got any gum chum?” Following Pearl Harbour, many Americans, including nurses, began arriving in Britain. The nurses were all officers and lower ranks were forbidden from ‘dating’ them. On 18th August 1942, the USS Uruguay docked in Swansea carrying American servicemen; they were billeted with local families in Mumbles, Grovesend and other areas; homeowners had no choice in this. Others were housed in tented camps in Gower and one at Underhill Park. By October 1943, there were 3 million American service men and women in Britain; their rations were in stark contrast to British people but they tended to be generous to their hosts. In preparation for D Day, 6th June 1944, training camps were set up at Caswell, Oxwich and Scurlage and The King Arthur hotel became the American HQ. Dances were held in church halls and quite a number of local girls formed attachments with GI’s. Many later formed the Swansea GI Brides Club before marrying and going to America.Thank you John for an informative and interesting talk.

On Wednesday, 18th March, we were entertained by Esme Wood, a very talented lady who worships at Ebenezer Chapel in Dunvant. Esme came
about this time last year for our Easter evening and lots of members asked if she could come again as her humour was enjoyed by all. She is, what I would say, a ‘stand up comedian’. She gave us a series of jokes regarding children, the pensioner, the hearing aid and the adult learning centre – all very amusing. This was followed by the humour often seen in a church magazine and a few
poems about getting old – quite appropriate for our lovely ‘young’ ladies!
Parish of Killay April 201513
We were greatly entertained and, as Esme says, ‘Laughter is the Best Medicine’. Thanks so much to her for coming.

Rob Evans was our speaker on 25th March; his subject was “Travelling through Wales”.
Rob had always been interested in photography so, after retiring and buying a digital camera, he decided to attend several courses on the subject, most of which centered on Scotland or the Lake District. He realised that there were many beautiful places in Wales, and a lot nearer home. Rob took us on a journey through Wales, beginning at Anglesey with beautiful photographs of the Menai Straits and the Britannia Bridge, telling us a little of the history and interesting facts about each and also Ynys Llan Wen
dedicated to St Dwynwen. Our next stops were Welsh castles -‐ Caernarfon, built in 1283 by Edward 1st, Harlech, Conway and Beaumaris. Port Meirion village was another place of interest built by Clough Williams-‐Ellis and still run by his grandson. Aberdovey, Aberystwyth, Aberaeron and St David's Cathedral, at which Rob's father was a Canon, were also on the itinerary as were a number of Inns, such as the Cresseli Arms. The final stop on the journey was Rhossili where Rob volunteers with Coast Watch. Here he has the nick-‐name “Jonah” as, whenever he is on watch, an incident occurs. On one occasion, a visitor discovered a bomb on the Worm and brought it to the CW hut, only to discover, after the bomb disposal from Hereford had been called, that it was not an explosive. This was a very enjoyable evening with some history, humour and beautiful photographs.
V
Our next meeting is on April 15th . Pam Davies & Gwynneth Prestwood

Calling all Knitters!A charity called Life for African Mothers was set up in 2005 by midwife, Angela Gorman. She had just arrived home from a particularly long shift in the neonatal unit in Cardiff and saw a documentary about a doctor trying to save the lives of pregnant women in the central African country of Chad. From the 1000 babies delivered each month, at least one mother was dying every day from treatable complications and up to a quarter of the babies did not survive. The Charity supplies free medication to reduce deaths from severe bleeding and eclampsia – a mother’s life can be saved by drugs costing less than a postage stamp. As well as supplying drugs, the Charity also runs courses by volunteer UK midwives which enable local midwives to take that experience back to their own hospitals. They now work in 11 African countries. To encourage the local women to come to the hospital to have their babies, rather than wait until they develop complications, when it may be too late, and to get them to return to the Mother and Baby Clinic for aftercare, the Charity gives each mother a set of baby clothes and a blanket on discharge from the hospital and another after visiting the clinic.
This is where we can help! They ask for donations of baby clothes and particularly, knitted jumpers and hats, to form the basis of the bundles given to the mothers. If you would like to help, I have the suggested, simple knitting pattern for the jumper and hat. Please contact Jan Proudfoot for a copy (299443 or in Church). If you have any spare wool (Double knitting) that you are able to donate, that would also be useful.
Hopefully, we can build up a supply of suitable baby clothes and possibly hold a fundraising event later in the year where we could hear more about the Charity’s work and hand over what we have collected.

The VigilThe thoughts of last month regarding the use of the stage in the main hall slipped naturally into thoughts of ‘the Vigil’. This was a religious play lasting well over an hour and followed the story of the aftermath of the crucifixion when, in a court of law, a trial is followed trying to understand what happened on Easter day. Many of the people who are involved in the story are questioned as to the part they played in the events of that time, as well as many who were experts in the field eg ‘angelology’ for angels that were there at the tomb’s entrance.
The Court has a judge and there are prosecuting counsel and defending counsel as well as officials of the court. The story unfolds when each player is questioned as to the part they played in the enfolding drama....an early witness is the gardener of the area where the tomb is found empty; a later witness is Simon Peter. The play is well written and there are many twists and turns as the prosecuting counsel tries to make sense of what happened by taking the line that it was all a plot hatched before hand and that those things that happened were not, and could never have been, a resurrection of He who died.
That said, the play was performed in St Hilary’s once in the 1970’s and again once in the 1980’s. A number of people played the same role on both occasions, whereas a few took on different roles. The Rev. Hywel Hughes directed the first production but, in the second, he played the part of the judge. Randall Nutt played prosecuting council, with much zeal, in the first production but, as you can see in the photograph of the second production, took a minor (if any role was really minor) part.
The group (see photo next page) met once a week and much enjoyment was had as we rehearsed our pieces which led up to the performance. The play was much appreciated by the large audiences that watched and experienced both of the productions. And, at the end of each production, the cast and stage managers all felt it had been a worthwhile endeavour which had somehow brought to us a strong feeling of community life.

On Palm Sunday a special devotional performance of Stainer’s Requiem took place in the evening at All Saint’s Church, Oystermouth. The choir who performed it were made up of the Ariosa Singers, The Mumbles Community Choir and members of church choirs from neighbouring parishes, Newton, West Cross and Sketty. Needless to say, Killay Church choir was well represented in all sections. The total number of singers was around 75 and those who had choir robes or uniforms wore them which made for a colourful assembly particularly when the entire choir paraded through the church on completion of the performance. The picture above shows Killay choir members immediately before the performance.

Mothers’ UnionThe programme for March began with some members attending the Quiet Hour on March 2nd in Holy Trinity Church, Sketty, led by Canon Andrew Knight, assisted by Revd Alison Jones.
u
Our first meeting held on March 3rd was a Lenten talk by Revd Alison Jones, who had been to Germany last autumn for a consultation on Ethics and Economics which sounded very boring but proved to be quite the opposite. Europe is built on a capitalist economy; with that comes power. The consultation brought experts from many places together including clergy – God and money coming together.
There is a situation in Europe with hundreds migrating, wanting to escape poverty and starvation is rife. There is greed and corruption; food is precious but much is wasted. Alison queried what good does it do to quote the Gospels to starving people. We need to stand behind people so that they can see Jesus. We could all do better. Alison issued a challenge to Mothers’ Union – to think local, invest in our community. Money is an investment for public good if used efficiently. We could barter or exchange things, create community gardens or use church grounds for growing vegetables and fruit. We could think about Credit Unions and job sharing. We must pray together and make time to care for each other; everyone has value in God’s name. As Alison said, most MU members have lived through austere times and know how to ‘make do and mend’.
The Secretary thanked Alison for her talk and assured her that we will take note of her suggestions and try to act on them.
u
Women’s World Day of Prayer was held on March 6th in St Paul’s, Sketty. The programme this year was prepared by the women of the Bahamas.
The first recorded mention of the Bahamas was in 1492 with the arrival of Christopher Columbus. Full independence from the Commonwealth was gained in 1973. The theme of the service was ‘Jesus said to them “Do you know what I have done to you?”’ During the service of hymns and prayers, all the
islands of the Bahamas had quotations read.u
The Revd Heini Jones, Minister of Siloam Baptist Church, Killay, kindly came to give a Lenten talk on March 17th. He began his talk by saying we may have
Parish of Killay April 201519
different theological concepts but we have much in common to celebrate and Anglicans have much to teach Non-‐Conformists.
Lent helps us to focus on the events of Easter.
The talk focused on the Greek word spoken by Jesus on the cross “TETELESTAI” – It is finished. Used in this context, Jesus was speaking in the realm of the servant. He was a servant king giving his life. His work was
finished, providing salvation. The priests in the temple also used the word, ‘tetelestai’ when the Jews took perfect lambs as sacrificial offerings for their sins. ‘It is finished’; the sins are gone. John the Baptist called Jesus the Lamb of God, the perfect sacrifice. ‘Tetelestai’ was used in commerce too -‐ written on a receipt it meant that the debt was paid in full.
Heini ended his talk by saying that when we sin, we incur a debt which we can’t pay but Jesus paid in full for us on the cross. Heini compared life to a jigsaw with a missing piece, the cross being the missing piece.
Teressa Garner thanked Revd Heini for giving a talk with much to think about before Easter and we would look forward to more talks in the future.
u
Lady Day, March 25th, was celebrated with prayers during the Thursday morning service.
u
The next meeting, on Tuesday, April 7th at 2:00 pm will be a talk by Mr Andy Grove from the Fire Service on ‘Safety in the Home’.
On Tuesday, April 21st at 2:00pm, Killay Writers Circle will give a presentation of stories and poems on the theme of the Queen’s birthday.
The Clyne Deanery MU Eucharist in St Mary’s Church, Swansea will be on Friday, May 1st at 11:00am.
