Water, sewer rates take a hike

Arnprior’s water and sewer rates are taking another hike as the New Year begins.

As part of a phased approach to make the municipal water and sewer system self-supporting, resi-dential customers can expect a three per cent increase in their base rate and four per cent in the commodity rate.

The latter increase is rated on how much water a customer uses.

Combining the water and the sewer charges will result in a new rate effective Jan. 01, 2008 of $10.39 per 1,000 imperial gallons if you use under 100,000 imperial gallons per month.

For amounts over 100,000 impe-rial gallons, the combined rate will be $5.19 per 1,000 gallons over the line.

That industrial rate for large users is up 15.6 per cent this year.

Eventually, as the phased increas-es are completed around 2012, the industrial and institutional users will pay substantially higher rates than they do now for amounts over 100,000 gallons per month, assur-ing they pay their fair share of the costs.

CAO Larry Donaldson suggested that the planned phased increases need to be reviewed by council soon to make sure they will cover the expected operational and capital expenses into the future.

Clowning around

The crowds came out in droves for the annual Arn-prior Optimist Winter Carnival held at the end of last week and through the weekend. At left, two-year-old Ella Armsden has never seen an invisible dog before. And she doesn’t seem too sure about JJ the clown either. Ella, and 272 others, dropped by the Nick Smith Centre for the Saturday, Jan. 26 morning Shanty Breakfast.

The council also approved Monday the issuing of interim tax bills to residents.

The bill will represent 50 per cent of last year’s tax bill.

It does not include any tax rate assessment increases or decreases for the 2008 tax bill for resi-dents or businesses.

Those changes will be reflected in the final tax bill due later this year.

Scrap booking 101The Arnprior Parks and Recreation Department’s youth group got some lessons in the popular hobby of scrap booking last week at the Nick Smith Centre. In all, 16 young people registered for the evening of scrap booking classes - an event that will be repeated if there is sufficient interest. Serena Ellis and Haliey Wheeler (picture left) looked through the racks of scrap booking materials while Chelsea and Chantel Robillard sorted through their pictures to see which ones they should use for their scrapbooks. For more information on the youth group activities, contact the Nick Smith Centre at 613-623-7301.

A helping handMaureen Harmon, a

reader in Utah who has the column sent to her regularly by a relative here, recently suggested that I highlight the work of RAOGK.

The acronym stands for ‘Random Acts of Genea-logical Kindness’ and their website is at www.raogk.org .

Members of the organization are volun-teers who have agreed to perform a free gene-alogy research task at least once per month in their local area as an act of kindness to fellow researchers.

There are over 4,000 of these volunteers across the United States and Canada, throughout the British Isles and conti-nental Europe as well as in Asia, Africa and Aus-tralia.

Each volunteer can specify the kind of task he or she is willing to per-form such as photograph-ing tombstones, looking up courthouse records etc. and should not be asked to do anything that they have not offered.

Some will do anything within their geographical area.

While the volun-teers give their time, the requester is responsible for any out of pocket expenses they incur such as parking and photocopy-ing.

Because of the recent increase in fuel prices they are now allowed to ask for $0.50 per mile for travel.

A big thanks to the volunteer is also in order when the job is done.

Before submitting a request it is important to read their ‘Guidelines for making requests’ and they have some useful ‘FAQs’.

There are volunteers from throughout our read-ership area and perhaps you would like to join them.

Take a look at their website and get a sense of the wonderful spirit that enriches family history research.

Quebec family history online

The Quebec Family His-tory Society has launched a new web initiative for its members.

The first two of four planned databases are up and running.

The first is a ‘Surname/Forename’ database.

It is very easy to use. Select the surname you want and you will receive a list of the number of hits in the following cate-gories: marriages (mostly Protestant), births, deaths, census entries and land grants.

Highlight the category you want and select ‘get page’.

I tried this with two of our families and found a number of significant hits.

The second active database is extracts from church registers.

This confused me a little at the beginning (sometimes I am easily

confused) because I was called upon to select a church code.

They had a drop down alphabetic menu so I tried it.

The code is simple: A is for Adventist and Anglican churches, B for Baptist, C for Congrega-tionalist, M for Methodist and R for Roman Catholic etc.

Once you select your church code you will get a dropdown menu listing the churches in that cat-egory.

You can select the church and the type of records that you want.

When the page appears you can use your ‘Edit-Find’ function to search for the name that you want.

I chose St. Patrick’s church in Montreal and marriages.

Several marriages that I had previously found in the parish registers were not included.

There is no indication if they are still adding data or not.

The other two databas-es that are in preparation are equally interesting.

One of them will be on cemeteries and the other on towns and villages by location.

These treasures can be found at www.qfhs.ca.

The surname index is open but the church one is for members only.

If you are not a mem-ber, you likely have a friend who is or you might consider membership yourself.

You can check out the other benefits of member-ship on their web page.

I welcome suggestions, comments, and queries at: [email protected]. Please mention this news-paper in your subject line.

Donations to ADMH Partners in Caring Foundation now equipping new emergency department

Scotiabank-Arnprior announced a $35,000 gift to the Partners in Caring Campaign to renovate and equip the Emergency Department at Arnprior & District Memorial Hospital. Branch manager, Brian Argue, above left, commented “On behalf of our Branch and staff I would like to commend the board of directors, hospital staff and all of their volunteers for their dedication, to ensure this campaign is successful.” Don Nicholas, ADMH board of directors past chair, above right, noted that, “This generous donation by Scotiabank demonstrates its commitment to our commu-nity and its hospital.” The Partners in Caring campaign to renovate and equip the emergency department at Arnprior & District Memorial Hospital has raised more than $2.5 million - surpassing the target required for the community portion of construction costs. Now the campaign faces the final challenge: Raising the final $1 million to ensure that the renovated emergency department has the necessary equipment required to assess, monitor and treat the urgent needs of our patients. Pineridge Children’s Centre/Arnprior Montessori School (photo right) has made a $5,000 contribution to the Partners in Caring Campaign Hospital. Tom Sullivan, left, acceptes the cheque from Anne and Barry Blier, of Pineridge.

Just in case you missed it...

Just in case you missed Tuesday’s copy of the Arn-prior Chronicle-Guide, here are briefs of some of the stories we are following:

* Mark MacDonald was laid to rest during a funeral Monday in Arnprior.

We covered the aftermath of the tragic accident that killed MacDonald and two classmates as well as putting another Arnprior man in critical conditon with head injuries,

We had the full story in last Tuesday’s edition of the Chronicle-Guide.

* If you can’t reach the town services, they will come to you.

While not instituting house calls, basic town ser-vices will soon be more accessible to the disabled.

The key services will be moved to the ground floor of the Henry Murdoch Building in the coming month or two.

We looked at the changes in Tuesday’s edition.

* It was the Optimist Winter Carnival last week-end and our reporters were there to chronicle the action.

Despite starting off with no power, most events went ahead as planned.

Don’t miss this...Here are some of the items we will be looking at for

this Tuesday’s Chronicle-Guide:

* The cadets can no longer use the facilities at the Emergency Prepardeness College due to its deterio-ration.

Council plans on looking at what options it might have to take over the abandoned facility.

We will outline the problem in the next edition of the Arnprior Chronicle-Guide.

* This Friday is Giant Tiger night at Nick Smith Centre as the jr. B Packers take on Shawville for the last time in regular season play.

We will be there to catch the action, so watch for it in next Tuesday’s Chronicle-Guide sports section.

For complete coverage of these and other news sto-ries about Arnprior and area, you can pick up a copy of the Chronicle-Guide on sale each Tuesday at local stores or at our office, 116 John St. North, located in downtown Arnprior.

This column, No Holds Barred, has been running in our area papers for over a decade now.

In that time, it has cov-ered everything from poli-tics, to personal stories; from humourous looks at ourselves, to serious local and international debates.

Throughout that time, the column has been based on the precepts in the orig-inal No Holds Barred, a collection of ideas for liv-ing both gleaned from oth-ers and original to me, that I wrote as a philosophy for myself many years ago.

In the last few years, I have shared it with a few people, who have all said, without exception, that it should be published.

With that in mind, here is the hitherto unpub-lished, original No Holds Barred column.

Though it was written as a strictly private work, I sincerely hope you find it of some interest.

No Holds BarredA time comes in your

life when you finally get it...when, in the midst of all your fears and insan-ity, you stop dead in your tracks and somewhere the voice inside your head cries out...ENOUGH!

You realize you really have bought into a dream world created by your background, your parents, your society, your church, the establishment.

Then, like a child quiet-ing down after a tantrum, you blink back your tears and begin to look at the world through new eyes.

This is your awakeningYou realize that in the

real world there aren’t always fairy tale endings, and that any guarantee of “happily ever after” must begin with you - and in the process a sense of seren-ity is born of acceptance.

You awaken to the fact that you are not perfect and that not everyone will always love, appreciate or approve of who or what you are... and that’s okay. They are entitled to their own views and opinions.

You stop complaining and blaming other people for the things they did to you - or didn’t do for you - and you learn that the only thing you can really count on is the unexpected.

You learn that people don’t always say what they mean or mean what they say and that not every-one will always be there for you and more impor-tant, that everything isn’t always about you.

Then you begin to growYou learn to open up to

new worlds and different points of view.

You begin reassessing and redefining who you are and what you really stand for.

Most important, you begin to discard the doc-trines and values you’ve out-grown, or should never have bought into to begin with.

You learn that there is power in creating and contributing and you stop maneuvering through life merely as a “consumer” looking for your next fix and for someone else to tell you what you should think.

You learn that what everyone else says is true,

probably isn’tThey are simply parrot-

ing what they were told. You realize that in fact,

very few people actually think for themselves, or take the time and effort it requires to be truly informed.

You learn to look at relationships as they really are and not as you would have them be.

You stop trying to con-trol people, situations and outcomes.

You learn to distinguish between guilt and respon-sibility, the difference between what everyone expects of you and what you really owe to anyone.

So, you learn to stand on your own and to take care of yourself... and in the process a sense of safe-ty and security is born of self-reliance.

You also stop working so hard at putting your feelings aside, smoothing things over and ignoring your needs.

You learn the only thing you must truly fear is fear itself.

You learn to step right into and through your fears because you know that whatever happens you can handle it and to give in to fear is to give away the right to live life on your own terms.

You learn that to give up your freedom for a sense of security, means you are giving up both your free-dom and your security.

You learn that life isn’t always fair, you don’t always get what you think you deserve and that some-times bad things happen to unsuspecting, good peo-ple... and you learn not to always take it personally.

You learn that nobody’s punishing you and every-thing isn’t always some-body’s fault. It’s just life happening.

You learn that negative feelings such as anger,

envy, resentment and jeal-ousy must be understood and redirected or they will suffocate the life out of you and poison the uni-verse that surrounds you.

You learn to be thankful and to take comfort in many of the simple things we take for granted; things that mil-lions of people on the earth can only dream about: a full refrigerator, clean running water, a soft warm bed, a long hot shower.

Then, you begin to take responsibility for yourself and you make a promise to never betray yourself and to never, ever settle for less than your heart’s desire.

Loving You learn that no one

else is going to right a societal wrong, so if it is important enough to com-plain about, it is up to you alone to do whatever needs to be done to correct it.

You make it a point to keep smiling, to keep trust-ing, and to stay open to every wonderful possibility.

Finally, with courage in your heart, you take a stand, you take a deep breath, and you begin to design the life you want to live as best you can.

And then, maybe, just maybe - you will find some-one else who also really does “get it.”

If you do, then you real-ize that being in love is for-ever, regardless of how the relationship begins or ends.

Once in love with a soul-mate who truly understands the world as you do, they are a real part of you forever.

If you fall out of love, then it never really was.

You learn that being in love means nothing held back, without fear, with-out rejection, experienc-ing it all together - with-out false expectations or restrictions – living life to the fullest with “No Holds Barred.”

Each week in conjunction with the Arnprior and District Humane Society we feature a pet ready for adoption.

This week we feature Oscar. This clown loves everyone, and is a very affectionate little fellow. However, he will become a big husky/hound and needs plenty of room to romp and play. Oscar has been at the shelter almost since he was born, and while he will miss his cat buddies, he really does need a family of his own. Well socialized, Oscar is partially housebroken already and is as smart as they come. No trouble to train this fellow at all, he aims to please. Just ask about Mr. Social #2894.

Owen also loves everyone. In fact, Oscar and Owen spend all their spare time playing together. If you were looking for a dog AND a cat but were concerned they wouldn't get along - here is the perfect "odd couple." Owen also likes children. Just ask about Dog Lover #2713.

The Shelter needs non-clumping cat litter, cat and dog treats, Whiskas Meaty Selections cat food, bleach and laundry soap.

The Arnprior and District Humane Society's "Have a Heart" membership campaign is underway. Please join for $10 single or $25 family. For more information contact the shelter, or stop by Arnprior's or Renfrew's Pet Valu or Sears.

The Shelter is open Monday to Sat-urday from noon to 5 p.m., at 490 Didak Street. The number is 623-0916.

Getting Back to BasicsThe question I get asked

most at this time of year has to do with shedding. Unfortunately there is no magic shedding comb or brush to make those fur balls disappear. However, you can through proper maintenance and regular grooming learn how to control it.

Winter so far has been anything but normal. We have had warm days, rainy days and of course cold snowy days all of which does not help the problem of shedding. If the weath-er would warm up than the fur would fall out and if the weather stayed cold then the shedding would stop. So what can you do to resolve this problem?

Short haired dogs and cats should be brushed as often as needed. To deter-mine the frequency is sim-ple, if over time you see les fur accumulating on the brush than you know that you are removing some of the excess fur.

Do not use rakes, stiff bristle brushes or slick-ers on short haired dogs or cats. A soft brush will effectively remove most of the dead fur.

Long haired dogs and cats should be combed. Do not use a brush since brushing only removes the top coat and does not reach deep down to the undercoat. Slickers and rakes can irritate the skin and should also be avoided. A rake would be advised to remove the thick fur on the chest or back end of a dog or cat.

As for products that claim to remove fur or

mats, nothing short of good combing and regu-lar maintenance will rid a dog or cat of unwanted fur. No amount of detan-gler or conditioner will completely remove your lack of regular grooming. Don’t waste your money on gimmicks.

Depending on the length of coat, lifestyle (indoor pet, country pet, outdoor pet etc…) and your ability to properly maintain the coat a dog or cat should be professionally groomed every two or three months and the nails should be clipped every four to six weeks.

If a dog or cat is very matted don’t wait until spring thinking that it’s too cold to shave the mats out now. A badly matted pet lacks the ability to keep itself warm. Mats tighten up as they get wet and by the time spring comes they may be so badly mat-ted that the coat could be difficult to remove creat-ing more discomfort for you

pet.Just a quick review,

have your pet profession-

ally groomed every two to three months depend-ing on the coat and your willingness to groom at home. A groomer can only do so much. You must maintain the coat at home with weekly, biweekly or daily brushing/combing depending on the coat. As I stated earlier this may not completely remove the problem of shedding, how-ever, with proper groom-ing and regular mainte-nance you will cut down the dust or fur bunnies flying around your home.

The Groomer with Humour

Boasting about race records

Some race horses stay-ing in a stable. One of them starts to boast about his track record. “In the last 15 races, I’ve won 8 of them!” Another horse breaks in, “Well in the last 27 races, I’ve won 19!!” “Oh that’s good, but in the last 36 races, I’ve won 28!” says another, flicking his tail.At this point, they notice that a greyhound dog has been sitting there listening. “I don’t mean to boast,” says the grey-hound, “but in my last 90 races, I’ve won 88 of them!”The horses are clearly amazed. “Wow!” says one, after a hushed silence, “a talking dog.”

Pet Talk

IAN STUPP

References key for pet groomersTo the editor: We are writing in response to the

article by Ian Stupp dated Friday, Janu-ary 18, 2008 entitled; Consider This Before Calling A Pet Groomer.

Firstly, the most important consid-eration in regards to any pet groomer should be references.

People are very involved with their pets and would be very anxious to speak about any and all good experi-ences.

If a groomer is at all reluctant to provide a wide variety of references, that should be a big concern.

Also consider your pet as a very reli-able reference. If the pet comes home from the groomer stressed out or even out of sorts, again that should be cause for concern.

The grooming experience should be a very gentle pleasant experience for your dog, as long as the groomer has

the patience and passion for dogs. We are all far too aware of groomers

that put money before the well being of the dog (and convenience of the customer).

Also, we share Mr. Stupp’s concern about a groomer being entirely trained from internet courses.

Thankfully we rest easy because we know that simply cannot and does not happen. A good groomer today compli-ments his or her training from a variety of sources, including hands on training at school with an instructor, experience with a mentor, and stay in touch with the latest techniques and ideas through internet training and trade shows.

Any good groomer would be anxious to act as a mentor to other groomers as well as share knowledge and expertise with other groomers.

Holistic health care to be showcased in RenfrewA Renfrew healing

therapist has organized a showcase of holistic and alternative health care services in Renfrew.

The Spirit, Mind and Body Health Show will be held at the Renfrew Recre-ation Centre this Saturday, Feb. 2 from noon to 8 p.m. The show is the brainchild of Koula Cove, who prac-tices and instructs Inte-grated Energy Therapy.

Cove started contact-ing other practitioners of alternative health care methods late last year about spreading aware-ness of their offerings through a public show.

More than 20 profes-sionals offering over 30 services promoting a healthy spirit, mind and body have agreed to par-ticipate. Health care prac-titioners from as far away as Fitzroy Harbour and Arnprior will be partici-pating.

Cove is delighted by the response. “The show seems to have an energy of its own,” she says, adding

she anticipates it becom-ing an annual affair.

Cove urges people to attend the health show with an open mind and questions at the ready. “There is so much out there for people … to help themselves heal their minds, spirit and bodies,” she said. “Open up your hearts and minds to the possibilities that exist,” she added. “You’re not meant to go through life suffering. There are ways you can work with what is troubling you so you can enjoy life to the fullest.”

Cove said that “we’re not expecting to sweep you off your feet … or for you to believe everything is gospel.”

Not every display or demonstration will reso-nate with everyone, she said. “But if something clicks, do some research, explore it further. Maybe you will find something that will help you.”

Different therapies and treatments help different people, she said. “Every-one’s on their own jour-ney … what’s good for one is not necessarily good for

another.”Cove said the show will

help in collecting informa-tion for a directory “of who’s who in alternative health care in this area.”

“We want to commu-nicate what we do … it’s all about education,” she said. “There will be no hard sell here.”

She said interest in holistic and alternative therapies is increasing in reaction to the growing amount of sickness and stress in today’s society.

Many of the alterna-tive therapies are not new, but based on age-old treat-ments practiced by ancient societies, she said.

Cove noted the interest in alternative therapies is also fueled by a growing concern about side efforts of certain medications.

However, she is opti-mistic traditional health care providers can work together with holistic/alternative practitio-ners to help people adopt healthier lifestyles.

“It’s a matter of bal-ance,” she said. “People are looking for more ways to take care of them-

selves.”The displays at Sat-

urday’s show will range from reflexology, angel readings, Yoga and Indian head massage to sound healing, crystal therapy, Pilates and Tarot read-ings. Suggestions on what people would like to see in future shows are welcome, Cove said.

As the idea of the show is to make it easy as pos-sible for people to see what is available in holistic health care in the area, it wouldn’t be fair to charge for admission, she said.

However, she is asking those attending to bring a donation of either food or money for the Renfrew Food Bank.

Cove said she chose the food bank because many people use it and it’s dif-ficult to stay healthy if you’re under-nourished or worrying about where the next meal is coming.

“There are children going to school without lunches … it breaks your heart,” she said.

“We live in a civilized place. Who will help if we don’t.”

Columnist says take Elvis’ adviceWise men say; Only

fools rush in.I often think of Elvis

crooning this line when I once again jump the gun, shoot from the hip, react without the facts, move-in too fast, and all those other ways of describing how I didn’t stop and take the time to first listen to my child before jumping to my own conclusions.

My book study group is presently working through Alfie Kohn’s views in Unconditional Parenting [2005]. In it, he discusses how, “...it is important to see a child as someone with a unique point of view, with very real fears and concerns ...and with a distinctive way of rea-soning.” [pp. 119] If one

believes this, and I do, then it becomes important to model respect, compas-sion and consideration by allowing a child the abil-

ity to express their point of view, even if it seems unreasonable to our ears, a little rough in delivery, and even when we know it won’t change the out-come.

When a child makes a request, asks a question, or states a comment, try not to automatically rush in with a “no,” or a judge-ment, or a lesson to teach.

Ask them about why they want to do some-thing, why they are asking that particular question, or why they feel the way they do.

Open the floor for them to tell you more about their point of view.

You will be surprised what you learn about your child as you sit back and

slow down to simply lis-ten.

I have often found that my immediate initial con-clusion was not at all the case, and thank goodness I slowed it down to listen before jumping to reac-tion.

I want my children to grow in their confidence to express themselves in this world.

As adults, I want them to be able to articulate what they think, even when they know it will be contrary to what someone else expects.

I want my children to have the courage to have a voice, and to learn to use their voice respectfully and with compassion.

If this is my hope for

them, I must start now to help them develop this voice, even though it might be saturated in delight-ful, humourous and often frustrating immaturity just yet!

I’ll end this column with another statement by Kohn which rings true,

“To be a great parent is more a function of listen-ing than of explaining.” [pp. 127]

The Searson live show reveals a band of such ferocious energy and power that audiences are continually astounded. “A mirror image I can’t refl ect / I’m not your soul mate, but it’s demise/” Erin sings in a voice at once captivating with unguarded sincerity that reminds one of Dolores O’Riordan from The Cranberries. Searson has been known for their fi erce styling of traditional music with a sense for experimentation. Their ability to cross the boundaries of rock, folk, alt. & country is evident. Their music is the ultimate form of expression. ★★★★★★★

Lucky Ron has been performing in Ottawa bars for over 20 years. He has a following in the Ottawa area, where his shows are like a country music version of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, in which call and response and audience participation are part of the show. For example, after he plays the third song of his set, Ron will wait until the audience calls for “NumberFour!”, which is Johnny Horton’s Battle of New Orleans. Other artists he covers include JohnnyCash and Stompin’ Tom. ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★

From page 7Therefore, another important

question to ask your groomer is about his or her relationships with other groomers in the area and how they keep up with the latest training techniques.

This type of information will go a long way to reveal if a groomer has a true passion for grooming pets or is simply trying to make money.

Furthermore, even an experi-enced groomer with a well groomed and behaved dog should expect to spend close to two hours on a thor-ough groom, there are no exceptions to this.

Therefore, ask your groomer how

many dogs they groom in a shop per day and how many groomers do they have on site, and then simply do the math.

No dog enjoys being abandoned in a cage with a forced air dryer no matter what any groomer tells you.

Remember the grooming regime should center around the dog first, then the convenience of the cus-tomer.

We know of groomers that charge low rates in an effort to have people groom their pets more frequently, therefore judging the groomer on the price they are charging may be a big mistake.

The groomer should make every

effort to get your dogs in often to maintain the clip of the breed stan-dard.

If a groomer does not put forth the effort to maintain the breed standard or at the very least meet the customer’s expectations, that person does not deserve to be a dog groomer.

Finally, we would like to reiter-ate, how important it is to get sound references from other clients.

Always trust your gutt feeling. If it doesn’t feel right, it probably

isn’t.

Sincerely yours, Randy & Yvonne Mickelson

Cheryl Gallant, MP speaking with Minister of Natural Resources Gary Lunn and Laurentian Hills Mayor Vance Gutzman.

MP Gallant questions former CNSC presidentCheryl Gallant, Renfrew-Nipiss-

ing-Pembroke MP, expressed disap-pointment that more time was not available to question the former President of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC).

“From her opening statement, the former President made contra-dictory remarks regarding what she knew and when she knew it. The CNSC have had three safety inspec-tors on site at AECL since May of 2006 when they opened an office. It is inconceivable that CNSC safety inspectors would not have informed their bosses if they thought the NRU was not being operated safely,” remarked Gallant.

“The other part of the former CNSC President’s statement that was wrong is when she spoke of pos-sible harm to the public. The fact of the matter is the NRU is a low power reactor that operates at much lower pressure than a reactor that is used to generate electricity. It has always had back up systems. Exaggerating

a possible risk only reduces the for-mer CNSC Presidents credibility to lower than what it is. The question was still not answered that if the CNSC felt there was a risk to public safety, why did they renew AECLs licence to operate in 2006?”

“What was further troubling in her testimony was the callous dis-regard for the health of Canadians who would be denied access to medi-cal procedures if there was a stop in the supply of medical isotopes. The health committee that had been established to advise the CNSC on health issues was disbanded in 2002. Her attempt to give a legalistic, bureaucratic response failed,” said Gallant.

“Based on the answer I received from Auditor General Sheila Fra-ser in committee today, it would appear that the policy of the previ-ous government to ignore AECL has resulted in the situation AECL and the CNSC find themselves in today. The lack of approval by Parliament

of a corporate plan for AECL was identified by the Auditor General in report after report all through the 1990s. Any agency, board or commis-sion that is created by Parliament must be accountable to the taxpay-ers of Canada. Taxpayers provide millions of dollars to hire expert staff. If the Commission is not going to listen to the advice of its own expert staff, why should taxpayers hand over millions of dollars to the CNSC?” concluded Gallant.

As the Member of Parliament for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, Gal-lant has the Chalk River Laborato-ries of AECL in her Riding.

She has taken a place on the House of Commons Standing Com-mittee on Natural Resources to rep-resent the over 2500 employees who are currently working at that loca-tion, the residents in nearby com-munities and to represent the tens of thousands of Canadians who rely on nuclear medicine to maintain their health.

Hair today, gone tomorrow

Eight-year-old Grace Donnelly of Arnprior was at the Hair Zone last week for a big trim, but this wasn’t just any hair cut. Donnelly donated 13 inches of hair to the Angel Hair organization, a group that collects donated hair and makes free wigs for young cancer patients. Her decision to donate the hair came easy – her cousin Colin is a cancer survivor who was diagnosed at age nine. The whole experience was still a big deal, aside from a few trims. Donnelly has been grow-ing her hair since she was a baby. Mom Mandy Inglis says Grace was a trooper through the whole thing. “I was the bigger chicken, for sure,” she laughs. Inglis expressed her thanks to Hair Zone, who provided the hair cut for free.

It is one of the most exciting moments in any young hockey player’s life,

that day he hears his name called during a National Hockey League draft.

Chris Kelly still calls it

“a high point” in his career. But the diligent Senators forward can speak with experience now about how long and hard the road to an NHL career can be.

“A lot of people think when you get drafted, you’ve made it, but I think that’s just the begin-ning,” said Kelly, a 27-year-old Toronto native.

Kelly still remembers the four games he spent with the Muskegon Fury of the United Hockey League during his in-jury-riddled fi rst year of pro-fessional hockey back in 2001-02. The NHL never seemed so

far away.“That was probably the

toughest (time) for me,” he said. “It just seemed like such a large mountain to climb.”

But soon enough, he was back in the American Hockey League for what would be four full sea-

sons of riding the buses – fi rst in Grand Rapids, Mich.,

then Binghamton, N.Y. - won-dering when his time would come. Kelly thought it had ar-rived in 2003-04, when the Sen-ators called him up to the NHL. But a knee injury cut his time with the big club to just four games.

“I thought maybe I’d blown my chance of playing in the NHL,” said Kelly. “Then the (2004-05) lockout happened, and that was another year of playing in athe minors and not getting an opportunity.”

After the lockout ended, Kelly arrived at Senators train-ing camp in 2005 with a gold-

en opportunity to secure a spot on the club’s fourth line. He didn’t squander it and has be-come a valuable contributor to the team ever since, especially on the penalty kill with Antoine Vermette.

You won’t see Kelly’s name on the scoresheet most nights, but Senators head coach John Paddock – one of Kelly’s big-gest supporters going back to the years together in the AHL – surely can’t imagine going into the NHL wars without him.

“I think people recog-nize what I do isn’t extremely fl ashy,” said Kelly. “I’m not go-

ing to light up the scoreboard each and every night, but I’m going to try to have an impact on the game in a defensive role or offensive role. I just want to help the team when I can.”

Safe to say, given the path he’s taken to get here, Kelly sa-vours every second of his time with the Senators.

“I don’t take coming to the rink every day for granted,” he said. “Once you’ve played in the minors and you’ve bused everywhere and you’ve played three games in a weekend, you just appreciate this a lit-tle more.”

The skinny: The Panthers once again fi nd themselves on the fringe of playoff contention, and it’s expected it’ll be another fi ght to the fi nish to see if they can end the playoff drought in south Florida. Olli Jokinen is still the unquestioned leader of the Panthers at-tack, with youngsters Nathan Horton and Ste-phen Weiss doing their part to chip in. Florida hopes might well rest on the shoulders of goal-tender Tomas Vokoun, who’ll need to be strong down the stretch.

Soul Directions stresses healing mind and spirit as well as the body

Heal the spirit and the body will follow.

That’s one of the prin-ciples behind the healing sessions offered at Soul Directions in Renfrew.

Koula Cove has found-ed a home-based busi-ness on Queen Street dedicated to helping cli-ents attain and maintain a healthy spirit, mind and body.

Cove practices and instructs Integrated Energy Therapy (IET). The healing therapy is based on detecting and releasing energy blocks caused by suppressed emotions.

She believes once emotional, spiritual and spiritual healing takes place, it’s easier to mend or fend off physical ail-ments. Many people are not aware many illnesses or diseases manifest in the mental, emotional and spiritual levels of the body before they mani-fest and develop in the physical body, she says.

“By finding construc-tive and healthy alterna-tives to release stress, suppressed emotions, and imprints in our cel-lular memory, we reduce the risks of developing a serious illness.”

Cove not only gives energy treatment ses-sions for clients of all ages using either IET or Reiki, she instructs class-es on the three levels of IET.

In addition, Soul Directions also offers a number of workshops on such topics as healing angels, journaling, and chakras (links between the mind and body), and crystals and gemstones.

She has a workshop that “helps you bring your dreams alive by assisting you to recog-nize the wonderful, pow-erful, beautiful being that you are.”

Cove, who grew up in

Ottawa, moved with her husband to Renfrew about a year ago after a stint in Newfoundland. They choose Renfrew because it is a friendly place and half-way between her husband’s parents fami-lies in Lanark Highlands and Pembroke.

She became interest-ed in integrated energy therapy after attending a class with her sister in 2003.

“The more I worked with it, the more I loved it … and realized its heal-ing potential,” she said. By 2005, she had become a certified master-instruc-tor and formed her com-pany, Divine Directions, now Soul Directions.

She says the gentle but powerful therapy helps clients “clear out past traumas,” getting rid of emotional blocks that hold them back. “It reduces stress and increases clarity … help-ing you accept better who you are,” she added. “I don’t heal you. You’re the healer. You do the let-ting go. You set yourself free.”

She emphasized people don’t have to relive pain-ful memories to release them. “It (therapy) helps you forgive and move on … there are so many ben-efits to it.”

An average treatment session lasts for about 90 minutes and leaves a cli-ent “relaxed, recharged and refreshed,” she said.

Cove explained the therapy is similar to Reiki, which works more on the physical side.

She has been practic-ing advanced Usui Reiki for the last two years and is pursuing her master-teacher level. “The two (Reiki and energy thera-py) are very complemen-tary,” she said.

For more information on Soul Directions or Saturday’s show, contact Cove at 613-433-9657 or by e-mail at [email protected].

CBC’s hockey day special focuses on sport’s impactCBC’s Ron MacLean and Cassie

Campbell, and Edmonton Oil-ers’ Dustin Penner reflect on their hockey journeys to celebrate the 2008 edition of CBC’s Hockey Day in Canada

Whether you are a national award-winning hockey broadcaster, former captain of Canada’s gold medal women’s Olympic hockey team, a Stanley Cup champion or a regular hockey fan, every Canadian has a story to tell about how Cana-da’s great frozen game has shaped and changed their lives.

For CBC’s Hockey Day in Cana-da host Ron MacLean and analyst Cassie Campbell, as well as Edmon-ton Oilers forward Dustin Penner, the game of hockey has taken them on many memorable journeys, whether a simple road trip or a big-ger journey through life itself.

From Iqaluit, Nunavut to Ana-heim, California to Torino, Italy – from Hockey Day in Canada, to the Stanley Cup Final, to the Olympic Winter Games, Ron MacLean has traveled around the world covering the good ol’ hockey game.

But, Ron’s most memorable hock-ey journey took place in Alberta, long before he became one of Cana-da’s favourite hockey broadcasters.

“I’ve been blessed to have hockey take me many places, but the great-est trip, as for most, remains my first road trip in minor hockey,” said

MacLean. “Proudly wearing my royal blue

and gold Red Deer Optimist Ban-tam’s team jacket, boarding a bus — just like the one in the movie Slapshot — and heading to Leduc 80 miles away. It’s never been larger. To this day, I swear their rink burgers were the greatest anywhere. I can picture everything about that jour-ney...except for the final score.”

Similar to MacLean, hockey has been a huge part of Cassie Camp-bell’s life for as long as she can remember. Campbell laced up her first pair of skates at the age of five, and many people tried to discourage her from playing hockey because she was a girl. But, the three-time Olympic medalist continued on her journey.

She knew it did not matter what people thought; what mattered to her was that she was having fun playing the game. And, what a journey it turned out to be: during Campbell’s career, she earned 21 medals in total, including 17 gold medals and four silver medals.

“The Olympic medals and the championships have all been very meaningful,” said Campbell.

“But for me, the things I learned from playing the sport of hockey have been the biggest blessings. Learning values and skills like hard work, teamwork, and having respect for oneself and for others are my

most memorable things when I think about my career in hockey. It is the life lessons and the great friendships I have developed along the way that have made my journey in hockey the best journey of my life.”

Hockey has also taken Edmon-ton Oilers forward Dustin Penner — a 2007 Stanley Cup champion and native of Winkler, Manitoba (the host location for the 2008 edition of CBC’s Hockey Day in Canada) — on several journeys. The most important one, however, was his big-ger life journey which began at the rink in Winkler when he was a high school player, and finished with him hoisting the Stanley Cup in Ana-heim in June 2007.

Cut three times by the Winkler Flyers, his hometown’s junior squad, and told by many minor league coaches that he was too small, Penner persevered.

He walked on with the Minot State Bottineau Lumberjacks, a junior college team in North Dako-ta, and was then offered a scholar-ship by the University of Maine Black Bears. In May 2004,

Penner signed with the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks, and his journey culminated in June 2007 as he helped Anaheim win the first Stanley Cup in their franchise history.

Galilee Centre’s spring speakers confirmed

Galilee Centre offi-cially announced Friday the lineup of workshop speakers and facilitators for their upcoming win-ter and spring sessions of the Spirituality and Social Justice Institute (SSJI).

“We’re excited to have some well respected indi-viduals and nationally recognized organizations participating in the facili-tation of our upcoming programming,” said Dar-

lene O’Leary, executive director of the Galilee Centre.

“These people have all had an impact on faith and social matters both regionally and nationally and we know that their messages and shared expe-riences will have a pro-found impact on program attendees.”

The Winter/Spring Ses-sions will include work-shops that are open to the

public and include facili-tators such as Dorothy McDougall of KAIROS (an ecumenical umbrel-la organization on faith and justice) and Chandra Pasma of Citizens for Pub-lic Justice (CPJ).

The announcement also included information about themed retreats such as the Women and Faith Weekend, to be held February 29 to March 1, which includes a Friday

night lecture/discussion with Cheri DiNovo regard-ing Women and Faith in Public Life.

Other retreats hosted by the centre will include A Spirituality of Justice For Our Time with Diamuid O’Murchu (in June), New Monasticism and the Church Today with Jona-thon Wilson-Hartgrove (in July) and Following the Nonviolent Jesus: Gospel Peacemaking in the War-

making World with John Dear (in August).

Program and Retreat information (including costs) are available by con-tacting Galilee Centre at 613-623-4242 Ext. 21.

Please visit www.gali-leecentre.com (the Pro-grams page or Google Calendar) for more infor-mation. Galilee CentreGalilee Retreat and Con-ference Centre is a reg-istered charity, sponsored

by OMI Lacombe. The Galilee Centre’s

mission is to provide an environment, programs and services which nur-ture people’s personal and spiritual growth, enabling them to contribute to a healthier world.

Hockey memoriesFrom page 17

“As a young boy playing hock-ey in Winkler, Manitoba, I never thought that one day I’d be playing in the NHL, and have my name engraved on the Stanley Cup,” said Penner.

“Your wildest hockey dreams can come true as long as you’re willing to work hard, dedicate your-self, and be the best player that you can be.”

Hockey fans can catch Ron MacLean, Cassie Campbell and Dustin Penner on CBC’s Hockey Day in Canada on CBC Television, Feb. 9, 2008, beginning at 12 noon

ET. Known as Canada’s unofficial

hockey holiday, the eighth annual CBC’s Hockey Day in Canada cel-ebration, presented by Tim Hor-tons, will celebrate “The Journey” and feature individuals and com-munities sharing their stories on a national stage.

The 13.5 hour-long broadcast will also include amateur hockey games and the traditional NHL tri-pleheader featuring all of Canada’s NHL teams.

Special community events and an online auction can be found at cbcsports.ca/hockeyday.

Valley a winter wonderlandThe Ottawa Valley is one of the greatest places to live in the world during the winter months (editor’s license) and last weekend proved it. The Arnprior Optimist Club host-ed their annual winter carnival to great success and over in Fitzroy Harbour, Pinto Valley Ranch hosted their annual fun day. At left, local musicians thrilled the Pinto Valley crowd. On the stage, from left, bass-ist Danny Strong, guitarist Billy Wil-son and his daughter, singer Kelly-Ann Wilson perform with the help of many other musicians. Below, at the Arnprior Optimist Winter Carni-val, Kyle Felhaver and Friends get the young ‘uns dancing during their Nick Smith Centre concert on Sat-urday, Jan.26. Below that, a horse-powered sleigh leaves Pinto Valley Ranch for a tour of the Valley. This weekend, Galletta hosts a fun day on Sunday, Feb. 3 and the following week both Fitzroy Harbour and Kin-burn host their winter festivals.

Clean water for low income families

On June 7, 2007, the Ministry of Environment announced “Ontario’s Action Plan on Lead”. One com-ponent of this plan is to provide financial assistance to low-income parents with infants and young children, and pregnant women living in households with elevated lead levels to obtain water filters that will remove the lead content from the drinking water.

The Ministry of Community and Social Services is providing $4.4 million to the Water Filter Fund Pro-gram throughout the province. Low-income households (including those on social assistance and fixed incomes) are entitled to receive a benefit of up to $100/year, if they meet the eligibility requirements. Eligible house-holds must be on a municipal drinking water system with elevated lead levels present. The $100 benefit will assist with the cost of an appropriate on-tap water filter and replacement cartridges.

Eligible low-income households include:a) Social Assistance – Ontario Works or the Ontar-

io Disability Support Program who have members in the family who are pregnant; or

b) Social Assistance – Ontario Works or the Ontar-io Disability Support Program whose families have children aged 0 – 6 years of age; or

c) Low-income households that have a net house-hold income of $20,000 or less and have family members who are pregnant or include children aged 0 – 6 years of age.

Canada’s role as leading ‘middle’ power to be discussed Feb. 14

The Honourable Roméo A. Dallaire, Lt. General, (retired) will be speaking to Renfrew-Nipissing-Pem-broke residents during a luncheon beginning at Noon on Feb. 14, 2008, at the Pembroke Legion.

Senator Dallaire has been invited by Carole Devine, federal Liberal Candidate for the Electoral District of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke and the Renfrew-Nipiss-ing-Pembroke Federal Liberal Association to speak about Canada’s Role as a leading middle power.

Gen Dallaire commented “Today, Canada has not only the ability, but also the responsibility, to take a leadership role in world affairs in areas where we have developed expertise, such as peacekeeping and peacemaking and the respect of international human rights.

“I am looking forward to discussing Canada’s

responsibilities to the international community in order to fulfill our role as a leading middle power.”

“With an area home to such a large Canadian Forces community, I am honoured that General Dallaire has taken the time out of his busy schedule to share with us his insights into Canada’s role in international affairs,” noted Carole Devine. She added, “I hope the information presented today will provide members of our community with an opportunity to reflect on the role Canada ought to play on the world stage.”

Tax tips for 2008, courtesy the blockTax Tips for RRSP Con-

tributors• The deadline for

making a contribution to a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) that can be deducted on your 2007 tax return is Febru-ary 29, 2008.

• Maximum RRSP contribution limits for 2007 is $19,000. The maxi-mum for 2008 is $20,000.

• New RRSP con-tribution room opened on January 1, 2008 based on

your 2007 earned income. Although you will not be able to claim a deduction until you file your 2008 tax return, any contribution you make will be earn-ing tax-free income in the meantime.

• C o n t r i b u t i o n s up to $2,000 in excess of RRSP limits can be made without being subject to a penalty tax.

• A spouse in a higher tax bracket may consider income-splitting

opportunities by contrib-uting to a spousal RRSP.

• RRSP contribu-tions can be carried for-ward if claimants fore-see being in a higher tax bracket in future years. This will help maximize the tax deduction.

• The age limit for holding RRSPs has changed from 69 to71. If you turn 71 in 2008, you must convert your RRSPs into a form of retirement income before the end of

this year or be taxed on the Fair Market Value of the plan. Be sure to dis-cuss your options with a tax professional.

• With few excep-tions, RRSPs withdrawals are taxed. However, there are federal programs allowing contributors to borrow from their RRSP for putting a down pay-ment on a first house or financing education.

The special rules and restrictions should be dis-

cussed with a tax profes-sional.

A local H&R Block tax professional can talk about other tips for RRSP contributors.
