In 2011 the first Castle Quay Weekender took

place in seven empty units on Castle Lane,

attracting 5,000 visitors.

Five years on, those vacant shops are

thriving independent restaurants, cafes and

businesses surrounding Castle Mound and the

Archaeology Park, with the Higgins Bedford

at its heart. And the Castle Quay Weekender

is inviting you back to celebrate.

WHERE IS IT?

The Castle Quay Weekender will take place

in and around Castle Lane, alongside the

beautiful River Great Ouse and adjacent to the

historic Castle Mound. It is just seconds fromBedford High Street, a ten minute walk from

the mainline train station and easily accessed

from all town-centre car parks. On Saturday,

the Archaeology Park will host the live music

stage and from there you can navigate

yourself to the other activities taking place on

Castle Mound, at the Higgins Bedford and on

Castle Bailey Gardens. Turn to page 11 for our

handy map of where the action is, how to get

here and where to park.

WHAT’S GOING ON?

From live music to fabulous food, circus

workshops to our art and craft market, there

is something for everyone at the Castle Quay

Weekender. The BedPop Record Shop will

be popping up at the Higgins, Bedford’s free

runners will be demonstrating their awesome

skills (and running workshops too) and we’ve

got dancers popping up all over the place.

Come along to ConTENTment to discover the

way to happiness, take a ten minute tour of the

Higgins, learn to draw at our portrait workshops

or write something deep and meaningful on

the Before I Die wall (more info on page 15).

Castle Lane is home to some of Bedford’s best

independent restaurants, so you definitely won’t

leave hungry. Try Mexican, Italian and Indian

cuisine, enjoy DJs on the terrace as you sip a

cocktail at The Lane bar or pop into the Pensieri

Coffee Shop.

JOIN US!

So, bring your family and friends, head over

to Castle Lane and let’s make a weekend of it.

See you there!

WELCOME!

Welcome to the Castle Quay Weekender: an incredible free music, food and arts festival

taking place in the heart of Bedford’s cultural quarter on 18th and 19th June.

L I VE MUSI C & DJS4

Live music has long been a key part of Bedford nightlife, with a strong and growing reputation

for producing bands capable of making it big. Over the weekend, the festival will host a choice

selection of the area’s best bands and solo artists, as well as a few visitors from further afield.

Here’s the lowdown on what’s on when and where:

S A T U R D A Y : M A I N S T A G E – U N D E R T H E D O M E

9 P M  Rags Rudi: Our headliners are six

young East Londoners blending the party-

sparking vibe of ska, headiness of hip hop

and politicised chaos of punk into a sound as

uncompromising as the city that raised them.

These boys have played with The Selecter

and The Beat.

8 P M   Smokin’ Durrys: Blues garage rock ‘n’ roll.

7 . 1 0 P M   Big Nothing: Post-punk grunge.

5 . 3 0 P M Silver Tongue Bandoliers: Expertly

latin vibes.

from Kristine Wilkinson Hughes & husband Joe.
