    SwitchSwitch

Switch is a small hardware device that joins

multiple computers together within one local

    area network (LAN).

They are relatively inexpensive and offer

    better performance than a hub.

When the switch receives a data packet, it

forwards the packet directly to the recipient

device by looking up the MAC (media access

    control) address.

Switch communication is Unicost (one to

    one communication).

    It works on Physical Layer.

    Hub

Hub is also joins multiple computers

    together.

Hub communication is broad costing (oneto all communication).

It is not an intelligent device.

Hub doesn't have MAC (Media Access

    Control) table addresses.

All Ethernet hubs accept the RJRJ--4545connectors of standard Ethernet cables.

Some years ago, Ethernet hubs offered only

10 Mbps rated speeds. Newer types of hubsoffer 100 Mbps Ethernet.

Some support both 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps

    (soso--calledcalled dualdual--speedspeedoror 10/10010/100 hubshubs).

    Repeater

Repeater is a device which is used in

network for the regenerating of signals.

When a signal travels along a cable, it

    tends to lose strength.

It is operates only in the physicallayer.

A repeater receives a signal and,

before it too weak or corrupted,

regenerates the original bit pattern. The

    repeater then sends the refreshed

    signal.

A good example of repeater is

    Cell (Cell (MobileMobile) boosters.) boosters.

    Bridge

& Bridge is a network device which can

    also regenerate signals.

& It operates in both the physical and

    data link layer.

&As a physical layer device, itregenerates the signals it receives.

&As a data link layer device, the bridge

can check the physical (MAC) addresses(source and destination) contained in the

    frame.

    RouterRouter

Router is an intelligent device of network.

It main purpose is to connect different

    network with each other.

It can select the best path to route a

message, as well as translate information

    from one network to another.

Routers select the best path to route amessage, based on the destination

    address and origin.

It is three layers device that routs

packets based on their logical address

    (Host-to-Host) address.

Suppose we have two LANS, one has

suppose 192.168.0.1 IP class and other

    has 10.00.1

Then it is not possible to communicate

these two different networks with each

    other.

But due to router, it is possible.
