  • We live in an epoch when relationship between humans and natural environments are undergoing major perceptional changes. More understanding is given to human effect on global ecosystems and coordination of this effect in terms of sustainability and cohesion. in my view Landscape Architecture is a discipline which, if applied with consideration of the new understanding and scientific achievements, will produce solutions to many current issues like climate changes, demographic pressures, development and consolidation of communities and creating conditions for support of local and national economy. Landscape Architecture can produce a blueprint for the new ways of sustainable use of land and space.

the main issue of the s i te is the lack of nor th-south accessib i l i ty due to the large s ize and l inear nature of the royal docks.

the pro ject a ims to bui ld a socia l and envi ronmenta l connect iv i ty through a green inf rast ructure of urban forest and wet land networks. this wi l l accelerate regenerat ion around pontoon dock, make i t more accessib le to s i te v is i tors and local res idents as wel l as benef i t the heal thy development of aquat ic and ter rest r ia l habi ta ts.

one of the project i was involved in is a residential development at 156 West end Lane for A2 dominion Group. it consists of two blocks with roof gardens and 3 courtyards at 3 different levels. the site has a 3 meter drop from west to east which posed a major challenge due to its small size and its location being adjacent to a railway line.

Working closely with my team leader, i was responsible for topography, levels across the site as well as amending the design following changes to the building layout by the architect.

i was also responisble for drafting cross sections, drafting and rendering the masterplan and assisting with production of the stage d report and the final package.

Amex house is a mixed-use development located near the Wembley stadium. it is located within the meander of the Wealdstone Brook and one of the key features of the design is the topography of the site which allows the attenuation of a 1 in 100 year floods. the central courtyard and the landscape surrounding the building is sunk by over 2 meters whilest all the access to the building is retained at height to match the public space surrounding the development.

i was involved in this project at concept development stage and was responsible for drafting and rendering the cross sections and the sketch masterplan and working closely with my team leader to complete the necessary components in time for submission to the planners.

    univerSity oF HertFordSHire

Between January 14 and April 15 i worked at Bouygues uk - one of the worlds leading construction companies. i was responsible for soft and hard Landscape packages at the university of hertfordshire student Accommodation project with the value if 120 million. the new campus is a BreeAM outstanding development and a true carbon Zero project. it is currently the largest timber frame constriction project in europe and is part of the universitys 2020 estate vision.

Working on this porject gave me vital team management skills, experience of working under pressure and to an impossible deadline. it also gave me understanding of how the construction industry works and how to deal with the often complex relationships between the clients, main contractors, landscape architects, architects and sub-contractors

and other parties involved in building a multi-million pound project.

    My responsibilities included:

    - Management of soft and hard landscape packages- Management of sports pitch package.- Management of subcontractors on site.- progress meetings with the client.- resolving design and technical issues, quality management, commercial issues.- coordination with other packages of work.- plan and monitor short range programme- prepare, review and monitor risk Assessments and Method statements.

the Leopold street is a smal l neighbourhood north of Leeds ci ty centre. the pro ject involved work ing wi th a group of local res idents who are campaigning wi th the local author i ty to develop the s i te in to a co-housing communi ty . the ro le of my team was to develop a number of design proposals based on the level of susta inabi l i ty and intervent ion involved.

this pro ject involved research or var ia t ions in the st ructure and design of d i f ferent co-housing communi t ies around the wor ld as wel l as those based in uk. We also conducted in terv iews wi th res idents of ex is t ing co-housing communi t ies and people c losely associated wi th them. this enabled us to devise a set of main pr inc ip les shared by the major i ty of co-housing communi t ies. We used those pr inc ip les to consol idate our design proposals through a deeper understanding of the c l ients needs.

the c l ient wanted a number of themed gardens around the Meadows. Al l areas needed to be wheelchai r f r iendly and planted wi th non-tox ic p lant species. An enclosed area was requi red for some of the res idents who have not sense of danger and a shel ter was a lso necessary for some serv ice users was also necessary for those who are sensi t ive to st rong uv l ight . A sensory approach was preferred and a socia l area for gather ing was requested.

the consul ta t ion was conducted in three groups which the res idents were d iv ided in to based on thei r level of communicat ion abi l i t ies. We have devised var ious act iv i t ies in order to understand the needs, l ikes and dis l ikes of res idents. Act iv i t ies inc luded making bunt ing, Looking through a ser ies of images of themed garden elements to know which themes were the most preferred. We also prepared a number of sensory e lements and mater ia ls , inc luding p lants f rom a local garden centre, to st imulate thei r senses of non-verbal communicator groups.

the resul ts h ighl ighted a preference for 3 main themes which inc luded: Music , Around the World and The Four Elements . We have used those as a main guide for our design concept development where a number of themed gardens were created which a l l conta ined fur ther e lements of those themes in thei r deta i l design.
