PASTORS COLUMN Dear Parish Family, members, a endees, guest and seekers, The Lord be with you! I am excited that as a Parish Family, we are going to be reading the ENTIRE NEW TESTA-MENT in 100 Days, beginning on Ash Wednesday!!! Here are some prac cal ps: 1) You will need to find 10 minutes for your reading, each day. This is in ADDITION to your 10 minute Prayer Time. To begin: pray the Holy Spirit prayer first, this way you are asking the same Spirit, that inspired the authors, to inspire you, so you can HEAR, what God wants you to hear. 2) When you read, read with the following ques on in mind? What in this reading am I supposed to learn, so I can apply it to my rela onship with God, Self and Others? You will be surprised, that on those days, the readings seem to be very dry, you might find a “diamond in the rough”. Always be open to the Holy Spirit, using, the most boring verses to instruct you! 3) Some passages are difficult to understand, check out the footnotes. Usually, other readers have had the same ques ons. If you are s ll stumped, write them out for me and I will try to answer them in my column on the last weekend of the month. 4) MARK UP YOUR BIBLE! If a verse strikes you, underline it and put the date next to it. This way, when you read the New Testament, the next me, you can see what the Spirit was teaching you in years past. I usually just circle the verse or verses and put the year, and the day. 5) The Bible, is really not ONE BOOK, but a library of books, wri en in a variety of liter-ary genres. O en, the Bible has been misunderstood, because, when people hear that God is the author, they think, everything in the Bible is the way it is wri en. Remember, God used human authors to convey his message and these human authors were o en limited to by the knowledge available to them at the me. The TRUTH, God intended for us to know, learn and apply s ll comes through, regardless of the limits of the human authors. 6) Catholics read the Bible knowing that it contains different styles of wri ng; history, poetry, fic on, nonfic on, apocalyp cal, etc. For example, the parables of the Good Sa-maritan and the Prodigal son, are both fic on, they were stories “created” by Jesus. Does that make the TRUTH of these stories any less? We do not interpret everything in the same way, instead, we keep in mind what the authors, BOTH human and divine, were intending to convey. Here is what the Church teaches: From: Dei Verbum, The Doc-ument of the Second Va can Council on, Revela on:#11. “Therefore, since everything asserted by the inspired authors or sacred writers must be held to be asserted by the Holy Spirit, it follows that the books of Scripture must be acknowledged as teaching firmly, faithfully, and without error that truth which God wanted put into the sacred wri ngs for the sake of our salva on.” The key words are, FOR THE SAKE OF OUR SALVA-TION. “The inspired books teach the truth. “Since therefore all that the inspired authors or sacred writers affirm should be regarded as affirmed by the Holy Spirit, we must acknowledge that the books of Scripture firmly, faithfully, and without error teach that truth which God, for the sake of our salva on, wished to see confided to the Sacred Scriptures” From the Catechism of the Catholic Church #107 7) Finally, if you skip a day or two, try and catch up, best you can. If you have missed a lot, DON’T GIVE UP, just start were you le off, eventually you will reach the end. Remember, you are not becoming a Biblical Scholar, instead you are seeking to be a Saint-in-Training, a Dynamic Catholic and learning the HABIT of Study. Maranatha Fr. Mike, Shepherd Leader

The first day is Ash Wednesday.

COLUMNA DEL PÁRROCO Queridos Feligreses y Visitantes, ¡El Señor este con Vosotros! Estoy de lo más excitado de que siendo una Parroquia Familiar, leeremos el “NUEVO TESTAMENTO COMPLETO” en 100 días, Empezando “¡El Miércoles de Ceniza”! 1) Ha de buscarse diez minutos para su lectura todos los días. A esto se le AÑADEN diez minutos anteriores de ORACIÓN. Para empezar: Haga la oración del Espíritu Santo, de esta forma se le pide al Espíritu Santo, que inspiró a los autores a que lo inspiren a us-ted, así ESCUCHARA lo que Dios quiere que escuche. 2) Cuando lea, lea con las siguientes preguntas en mente; ¿Que se supone que he de aprender en esta lectura, para aplicarla a mi relación con Dios, a mi mismo y a otros? Se sorprenderá que, en esos días, las lecturas se hacen muy secas, “A lo mejor encuen-tra un diamante en bruto”. ¡Siempre abrace al Espíritu Santo que u liza los versos más aburridos para instruirlo! 3) Algunos pasajes son di ciles de entender, revise los apuntes de los márgenes. Casi siempre otros lectores han tenido las mismas preguntas. Si se siente atascado, escríba-melas a mí y trataré de contestarlas en mi columna del ul mo fin de semana del mes. 4) ¡SUBRAYE SU BIBLIA! Si hay un verso que le choca, subráyelo y ponga la fecha a su lado. De esta forma cuando lea el Nuevo Testamento la próxima vez, vera lo que El Es-píritu le había enseñado en empos pasados. Yo le hago un circulo a cada verso o ver-sos y le pongo a su lado el día y año. 5) La Biblia no es tan SOLO UN LIBRO, pero una colección de libros, escrita en una va-riedad de géneros literarios. Muchas veces ha sido mal entendida, ya que cuando la gente escucha que Dios es el autor, piensan que todo en La biblia es de la forma que está escrita. Acuérdense de que Dios u liza a autores humanos para transmi r su men-saje y estos autores humanos eran personas limitadas por los conocimientos de la épo-ca en que vivían. La VERDAD es que Dios intenta que nosotros conozcamos, aprenda-mos y apliquemos aquello que nos transmite, a pesar de las limitaciones de los autores humanos. 6) Los Católicos leen la Biblia sabiendo que con enen dis ntos es los de composición, historia, poesía, ficción, no ficción, apocalíp co, etc. Por ejemplo, la Parábola del Buen Samaritano y el Hijo Pródigo, son las dos ficciones, son historias “creadas” por Jesús. ¿Hace de la VERDAD de estas historias algo menos? No interpretamos todo de la mis-ma manera; en cambio hay que tener en mente lo que los autores, ambos humanos y divinos tratan de transmi r. Aquí tenéis lo que la Iglesia enseña: “Por eso, todo lo afir-mado por los autores inspirados o escritores sagrados debe estar sujeto a ser afirmado por el Espíritu Santo, con nuando con que los libros de la Escritura han de ser conoci-mientos que se enseñan firmemente, con fidelidad, “y sin error de la verdad que Dios quiso poner en los escritos sagrados para el beneficio de nuestra salvación”. Las pala-bras claves serán, PARA EL BENEFICIO DE NUESTRA SALVACIÓN. Del: Dei Verbum, El documento del Concilio Va cano Segundo sobre, Revelación: #11. “Los libros inspira-dos enseñan la verdad. “Desde entonces todos los autores inspirados o escritores sa-grados afirman lo que ha de considerarse como afirmado por El Espíritu Santo, hemos de reconocer que los libros de Escritura enseñan de forma firme, con fidelidad y sin error esa verdad de que Dios, para el beneficio de nuestra salvación, desea que fuese confiado a las Sagradas Escrituras”. Tomado del Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica #107. 7) Finalmente si se saltan un día o dos, traten de ponerse al día de la mejor forma posible. Si ha fal-tado mucho, NO LO DEJE, empieza desde donde lo dejo, y de todas formas llegará al final. Acuérdese de que no se está formando como Erudito Bíblico, en cambio lo que busca es ser Santo en Entrena-miento, un Católico Dinámico aprendiendo el HÁBI-TO de Estudio. Maranatha, Fr. The dual disciplines of fas ng and abs -nence have a long history in the Catho-lic Church. Going back to the early Church, the purpose behind the custom of self denial is not punishment; it is to simplify our lifestyles so that we create a certain emp ness. In this way, freed from all distrac ons, we are able to hear and respond to God’s con nued call to conversion and holiness. ♦ Fas ng is to be observed on Ash

Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18 to 59 years (inclusive). On days of fas ng, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Ea ng between meals is not per-mi ed, but liquids are allowed.

♦ Abs nence from meat is to be ob-

served by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednes-day, all the Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday are days of abs nence.
