The Magic of Christmas Markets
DECEMBER 2012 ASIANA 15
The tradition of the Christmas markets in Germany
dates back to the 14th century. In this time of the year,
they turn into highly requested meeting points, and a
must see for those traveling to the country, no matter
how old you are. From gifts, pottery, candles – usually
handmade – the markets attract thousands of visitors
each year.
Heidelberg’s Christmas Market In Heidelberg, on the Neckar River valley, about 90 km away
from Frankfurt, it could not be any different. The city lives
intensely the days before Santa comes to town. The local
Christmas Market has a feature that is hard to find some-
where else. The market is not centralized and branches out
through the historical Old Town, the Altstadt. As you discov-
er the charming alleys, the tourist attractions and meet lo-
cals, you get to live the Christmas experience by visiting the
five squares that host the Christmas Market in a 1.5 km long
path. In the current edition, over 140 stalls, give form to the
local Christmas Market. In the heart of the Old Town, with
about 70 stalls the “Universitätsplatz” is the biggest square.
Children may ride an antique marry-go-round there, and
you can find everything you would expect from a Christmas
Market. And a statue of Hercules — Market Square’s center-
piece — is overshadowed by the famous Christmas Pyramid.
In Karlsplatz, located below the Heidelberger Schloss castle,
there is an ice rink with an amazing view. The Christmas
Market in Heidelberg is open from November 21, until De-
cember 22 daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on Saturdays
until 10pm. Welcome to
the magic of Christmas.

2. Upon buying the Glühwein,
you also pay for the mug.
You can get the money back
when you return it. But keep-
ing it is a good and inexpen-
sive souvenir.
