contacts [include] Tinker Air Force Base, Ft. Sill Army Base, all of Oklahoma City public schools, the state capital complex including the capitol and surrounding buildings, so he has some pretty substantial maintenance contracts,” said Fox.
Fox is married to Terry and Judy’s daughter, Valerie, and began working for American Elevator Company twenty years ago at Terry’s encouragement.
For twenty years Fox watched as Terry set the example of how to run the business.
“My father in law is, essentially, he’s my hero. I look up to everything he’s accomplished,” said Fox.
American Elevator Company is currently the only independent elevator company in Oklahoma City that covers the full realm of the trade, including service, repair, new construction and modernizations.
This has made them a favorite of many Oklahoma City Businesses and a target for foreign investors who want to buy American Elevator Company as they have all of the other major players over the last 40 years. However, Terry has always declined wishing to maintain the independence, integrity and personable feel of his company.
“One of the greatest things about the Schmidt’s, Terry would never ask anyone to do anything he wouldn’t do himself,” said Fox, who says Terry even takes the major holiday calls allow

ing his employees to spend time with their family and friends.
Fox said that Terry and Judy have always taken every aspect of the business very seriously and have worked to create and maintain a family atmosphere.
“Val and Steven [Terry and Judy’s children] were both raised at the shop until they were old enough to go to school, same things goes with my children and now Steven’s children,” said Fox.
“That’s been a blessing. It’s kind of unique and lends to the family atmosphere Terry has created there.”
“We’ve got all our kids there [now],” said Judy with pride. “They grew up in the
office, all their kids have grown up in the office. The youngest is there now, she’s just crawling.”
They’ve extended that respectful family feel to their 14 employees as well and are continually fielding calls from people who want to work with them.
“People will work harder for you if you appreciate what they’re doing and make them less of a number and more of a person and that’s what he’s always done,” said Fox.
March 28th marked 40 years of success for the family company.
“We managed to keep the doors open for 40 years so I guess we’re doing some
thing right and maybe my grandkids will eventually be in the business, you never know,” said Terry who officially retired from the family business a year ago and handed the reins over to his two children and their spouses, who the couple feels is qualified and capable due in large part to their being raised, literally, in the elevator business.
Terry’s legacy lives on through his children and successors who Fox says learned by and now lead by his example.
“He laid the groundwork for us, he set the business model. Hard work pays off and I think 40 years in business would prove that.”
