Nagano Prefecture is geographically in the center of the Japanese archipelago. The western to the southeastern area

of the prefecture is surrounded by precipitous mountains and abounds in beautiful natural scenery, hot springs and historical towns, and can also boast of delicious cuisine. Let’s go on a trip that will stimulate all five of our senses!

KamikochiAs one of the most famous mountain resorts in Japan, Kamikochi offers breathtaking views created by the steep Hotaka mountain range, whose peaks are about 3,000 meters in height. A mountain fuming white smoke is the 2,455-me-ter Mount Yake-dake. It is the only active vol-cano in the Northern Japanese Alps. There is walkable promenade from Taisho-ike Pond, which was formed by the eruption of Mount Yake-dake in 1915, to Yokoo, and places where you can enjoy beautiful scenery such as Tashiro Moor and Tashiro-ike Pond are along it.

When walking on the left side of the Azusa-gawa River from Kappa-bashi Bridge, which

spans the river, you will soon arrive at Kamikochi Visitor Center, and then at Myojinkan (ryokan) after a while. At the back of Myojinkan, there is Myojin-ike Pond. A further one-hour walk from here will take you to Tokusawa and one more hour to Yokoo, home to Yokoo Sanso (lodge). It is a base of mountain climbing of Mount Yariga-take and Mount Hotaka-dake, which are two of the highest and steepest mountains in Japan that most serious climbers aspire to climb, and from here proper mountaineering equipment and experience is necessary. After a short sum-mer, leaves of broad-leaf trees change to orange and red, and larches change to gold.

The suspension-bridge-style Kappa-bashi was constructed 100 years ago, and a trekking tour commemorating the 100th anniversary will be held on October 3 (Sun), 2010.

Norikura Kogen PlateauNorikura Kogen, stretching east of Mount Norikura-dake, is a plateau some 1,200-1,900 meters in elevation. Mount Norikura-dake has a gentle slope to the top and the huge plateau

at the foot is dotted with dynamic waterfalls and lovely lakes and ponds. Buses to the sum-mit, Tatamidaira, start from in front of Kanko Center (Tourism Center). Yukemurikan nearby the center has an open-air bath offering a view of Mount Norikura-dake. On a day-trip you can enjoy soaking in milky white hot water for a few hours. On the plateau, there are many other hot springs.

Zengoro no Taki Waterfall is one-hour bus ride from Kyukamura (Vacation Village) bus stop via Ushidome-ike Pond. Ichinose-enchi features extensive grasslands and you can tour around small lakes and marshes along the trail. An about 25-minute walk from Sanbondaki bus stop will take you to Sanbondaki (Three Stream Falls).

When you go up Tatamidaira (2,700 meters) by shuttle bus, you will be quickly enveloped in a high mountain atmosphere. Splendid flower fields can be seen here from July to August. There are several walking or trekking routes, and you can choose and enjoy a hike depending on your physical strength. However, if you want

to hike, appropriate equipment such as trekking shoes, a long-sleeve shirt, a hat, and rain apparel is necessary since the altitude is about 3,000 meters. For those who want to enjoy casual walking, a 30-minute route around the flower field in Tatamidaira is recommended.

In spring, a huge corridor created by snow re-moval is alluring. It can be enjoyed from May 1 to around the end of May. Leaves around the top of Mount Norikura-dake begin to turn red in September, and autumn leaves are at their best at the foot of the mountain in early October. Snowshoe hiking on the blanket of snow or see-ing frozen waterfalls is enjoyable in winter.

Shirahone Onsen is a hot spring resort whose water is said to be highly efficacious for health, and it is said that you won’t catch a cold for three years if you soak for three days.

MatsumotoMatsumoto, a town that prospered as a castle town, is surrounded by the northern Japanese Alps mountain ranges to the west and Utsukushigahara Plateau to the east. From any

place in the city, you can see beautiful scenery of the mountains. In the town, touring histori-cal buildings and eating tasty foods at well-es-tablished shops is enjoyable. Matsumoto Castle, a national treasure, has a wooden castle tower of five stories and six floors inside. It is the old-est castle of such type in Japan. You can see inside the castle tower and enjoy the panoramic view of the city from the top of the tower.

Former Kaichi School is a quasi-Western style building that carpenters built in the past by eclectically imitating other “Western” buildings. Elaborate carvings decorate the facade. It is Japan’s oldest extent quasi-Western style building mix-ing building styles of West and East. Details such as exotic stained glass, a dragon motif carving, and karahafu, or traditional entrance roof style, are interesting to see. There are many other buildings of historical interest in Matsumoto.

Nakamachi-dori Street is lined with store-

houses with white and black walls. The street is part of the old Zenkoji-Kaido, the Edo-era road between Matsumoto and Zenko-ji Temple in Nagano City. You can enjoy visiting folk craft shops, galleries, and cafes. Matsuoto Clock and Watch Museum is home to a collection of old clocks and watches.

Nawate-dori Street is a shopping street with row houses. Venerable soba (buck-wheat) noodle shops, taiyaki snack shops, and variety stores line the sides of the street.

A 15-minute drive from Matsumoto Castle will take you to Asama Onsen, a

favorite place of the lords of Matsumoto do-main. Another famous spa, Utsukushigahara Onsen is also quite close by.

Walking around the town is enjoyable, but if you want to give your legs some rest using Matsumoto Tour Bus (Town Sneaker) is also a good way to see the sights. A day ticket (500 yen) includes discount of the admission fee of some facilities, so it is both convenient and economical.

Utsukushigahara Kogen PlateauLocated east of Matsumoto, this plateau is the largest and highest (2,000 meters)

plateau in Japan. It commands striking 360-degree views, including views of the

Northern Alps and even Mount Fuji. In the season, the plateau is covered by carpets of aza-leas or alpine plants. There is large stock farm where cows enjoy leisurely meals of grass against a picturesque background of the northern Alps. You can get information on nature and the pla-teau at Utsukushigahara Shizen Hogo Center (Nature Conservation Center) in front of Utsukushigara Kogen bus stop. After walking along a broad trail sandwiched between fields of grass, you will arrive at Ogato, the highest point of the plateau, 2,034 meters in altitude. The trail is a gentle slope, so even those who are unfamiliar with hiking can easily enjoy it. There is a 6.6 meter tower in the center of the plateau, called Utsukushi no To. On foggy days, climb-ers ring the bell inside to guide other climbers on their way. If you walk on, you will arrive at Yamamoto-goya (lodge). From Yamamoto-goya bus stop, you can go to Matsumoto by bus.

The Utsukushigahara Open-Air Museum is at the end of Venus Line, a drive route, and 350 modern sculptures are exhibited outside. (Open: Apr 24-Nov 15)

SuwaSuwa is a hot spring resort with a 400-year his-tory. Flourishing originally as a castle town, it has many historical sites and remains.

Let’s start at Shimo-Suwa Station! The northern side of Lake Suwa is a place of scenic beauty and retains some of the atmosphere of an old post-station town. Suwa Taisha shrine complex consists of four shrines, and Kamisha (“Upper Shrine,” consisting of Harumiya and Akimiya) and Shimosha (“Lower Shrine,” con-sisting of Honmiya and Maemiya) are located on opposite sides of Lake Suwa. First, go to calm and quiet Harumiya of Shimosha, and then to Akimiya of Shimosha where the number of visitors is the largest among the four shrines of Suwa Taisha. The huge shimenawa, or stylized sacred straw rope, is very impressive. Log pil-lars (onbashira) of the four corners of the shrine building are hewed from gigantic trees cut dur-ing the Onbashira Festival.

From Kami-Suwa Station on the east side of Lake Suwa, go to Lake Suwa. Suwa-ko Kanketsusen Center (Lake Suwa Geyser Center) is near the lake. The geyser that shoots water up to a height of 5 meters every one hour is a must see. You can go round the lake in

about 30 minutes by car. There are some unique museums including Kitazawa Museum of Art. And, why not try sake tasting at the shop of Miyasaka Jozo Brewery, which is famous for the “Masumi” brand of sake? Lake Suwa is also famous for fireworks in summer.

An amphibious bus tour around Lake Suwa started in May 2009. A bus which runs on land enters the water without modification, which is quite an experience for the passengers! The scheduled operation is from April to January. (Nihon Suiriku Kanko, 0266-75-2650)

Onbashira Festival is a major festival held once every seven years. Teams of local men drag and slide huge logs down to the village, The logs are cut from gigantic trees on the mountainside and are regarded as “stand-ins” for the gods of the Taisha shrines, and they are set on end at the four corners of the shrines. The exciting spec-tacle of the large (and dangerous) logs and the men, sometimes riding on the logs, sliding down steep slopes in the dynamic Kiotoshi ceremony attracts many tourists. The festival took place in

spring 2010, and next will be held in 2017. Komiya Onbashira Festivals takes

place at many places in Suwa from late summer to autumn in the same year of the Onbashira Festival, and some of them welcome tourists’

TateshinaTateshina Plateau spreads along the western foot of the Yatsuga-take mountain range and has been known as a resort area with high-end villas. Beautiful Lake Tateshina, Lake Megami, Lake Shirakaba, and other lakes and the surrounding mountains make picturesque landscapes. You can enjoy appreciating art and strolling in nature at Open-Air Museum & Artland and Musee Marie Laurencin, as well as at Barakura English Garden.

Pilatus Tateshina Rope Way will easily take you to the 2,237 meter top. You can see pan-oramic views of dynamic Northern Yatsuga-take from a trail which you can go around in about 30 minutes. Tateshina Onsen and Oku-Tateshina Onsen both enjoy reputation as ex-cellent spas.

For touring the very extensive Tateshina Plateau, Tateshina Kogen Round Bus is con-venient. It stops at major sightseeing places in-cluding Lake Tateshina, Pilatus Tateshina Rope Way, Lake Shirakaba and Kurumayama Kogen

Plateau. (Suwa Bus, 0266-72-7141)In early November, a film festival com-

memorating director Ozu Yasujiro is annu-ally held at venues around Tateshina Plateau, a place he loved.

KirigamineKirigamine Plateau is well known for fog. The difference of elevation between Lake Suwa and Kirigamine is 1,000 meters, and the temperature difference is six degrees. When a southern wind near Lake Suwa suddenly blows up toward Kirigamine, it cools very quickly, producing fog. Scenes creat-ed by dense fog and light fog are quite fantastic, but on clear days a sweeping view of the Japan Alps which can be seen from 1,600-1,800m hills is also breathtaking. The plateau has a gentle slope and is covered by flowers in sum-mer. Trekking while seeing pretty ponds and as many as 300 kinds of alpine plants from well-organized boardwalks and trails is enjoyable. You can go up to the top of Mount Kuruma-yama by lift Sky Liner. Grasses on the moors turn to autumn colors at the end of September and a bit later leaves of trees begin to turn red.

FoodA place where water is delicious produces de-licious soba buckwheat noodles and Shinshu (the traditional name for the Nagano region)

is no exception. Why not compare a num-ber of soba restaurants including famous ones and “undiscovered” ones? The fine water also contributes to creating tasty sake and wine. Many local breweries compete on taste. Tasty miso and soy sauce are also produced thanks to the

good water. Oyaki is a bun stuffed with vegetables and wrapped in a flour-based

dough wrapper. Sanzoku-yaki is a local dish in which chicken marinated in special sauce with garlic is coated with starch and deep-fried.

Clear water and fruitful land nurture fresh agricultural produce. Thanks to the tempera-ture difference between day and night, which is peculiar to a basin, watermelons, apples, grapes, blueberries and other sweet fruits and good vegetables are produced. Some vegetables are traditional types and have been produced since time out of memory. Pickles are produced as a preserved food to make up for shortages in the long winter. Suwa, Tateshina Plateau and the foot of Yatsuga-take are famous for highland vegetables. Pond smelts are caught at Lake Suwa from September to early April.

“Bunraku” is also Ningyo-JoruriAmong traditional performing arts of Japan, Bunraku, a type of puppet drama, is the most renowned all over the world together with Kabuki. Puppeteers manipulate dolls to the cadences of joruri (chanted narration) spo-ken by tayu (a chanter), accompanied by the sounds of shamisen (a three-stringed instru-ment). In the past, the performance used to be called “Ningyo-Joruri,” (ningyo generally means “doll”) but nowadays it is officially called “Bunraku,” which derives from the name of the theater that specialized in showing the puppet shows.

World-Renowned Sophisticated Performing ArtOne of the major reasons why Bunraku is a world-class performing art is in its style. It is a composite art consisting of joruri, one form of Japan’s shamisen music, and a unique operation by which three puppeteers maneuver one doll together. In terms of stories, unlike most other puppet plays in the world in which a short play of a simple story of a myth or fairy tale is per-formed, Bunraku dramas express a serious story depicting human emotions in a lengthy narra-tive performance, and some of them continue for a full day. In addition, although puppeteers make efforts to hide themselves in most other puppet shows, puppeteers of Bunraku are vis-

ible to the audience. Bunraku is truly a one-of-a-kind performing art with characteristics that are markedly different from those of other pup-pet shows in other cultures around the world.

Brief History of BunrakuThe origin of Bunraku dates back to the early 17th century. Later in the century, in 1684 Takemoto Gidayu founded Takemoto-za the-ater in Dotonbori, Osaka, and started produc-ing a string of hits of Ningyo-Joruri, thanks to the scenarios of Chikamatsu Monzaemon, the troupe playwright. In the mid-18th century, Ningyo-Joruri was at its heyday, overtaking the popularity of Kabuki. In the 19th cen-tury, Uemura Bunrakuken opened Bunraku-za theater in Osaka. It became the center of this performing art, and that’s why the name “Bunraku” became the name commonly used for Ningyo-Joruri. Bunraku was inscribed in November 2008 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

Elaborate Devices and Deep Emotional Appeal

One Doll Operated by Three Puppeteers Bunraku performances are composed of three elements called “Sangyo”: tayu, shamisen and

puppeteers. One tayu performs the voices all characters, and also performs the voice of the narrator for each scene. He is the only one per-former who makes vocal sounds on the stage. The “spouse,” so to speak, of the tayu is the shamisen, which expresses emotions of charac-ters and scenes by musical sound.

Further, Bunraku requires three puppeteers to manipulate each “doll” or puppet, which is different from all other puppet performance around the world. The three puppeteers are: omo-zukai, or head puppeteer, who manipu-lates the kashira (the doll’s head and face) with his left hand to animate the doll, and who with his own right hand also operates the doll’s right hand; hidari-zukai, or left-hand puppeteer, who operates the doll’s left hand and also handles props; and ashi-zukai, or foot puppeteer, who uses both hands to suggest the movements of the doll’s legs and feet.

A Bunraku doll is quite large at about 120-150 cm in height, and a bit heavy with 3-10 kg in weight. To reach the final goal of becoming a head puppeteer, it takes, first, a long period of training of about 15 years from the start as a foot puppeteer, and then another 15 years as left-hand puppeteer.

On the stage, the three puppeteers work to-gether in perfect harmony, and it makes the doll seem truly alive. A dolls’ movements are surpris-ingly delicate and often more beautiful than

Japanese traditional performing art, Bunraku, with a more than 400 year history.

This is an introduction to Bunraku for beginners who first see it in Japan.

Let's go and see Bunraku in Tokyo in September or in Osaka in November in 2010!

those of real human beings if they are manipu-lated by master puppeteers. Dolls are sometimes lovely and sometimes mysterious. They are also good at getting the audience to laugh and mov-ing acrobatically. They win all the more empa-thy from the audience because they are dolls.

Exquisite Tension of “Sangyo”During the play, tayu and shamisen players don’t see the stage. The back and forth between these two elements of the “sangyo” as they heighten their emotions and those of the characters in the play, creates a certain tension, and this har-monious tension contributes much to a success-ful performance. Some dramas feature historic incidents and others feature lives of ordinary people. But in both types, essential emotions of human beings, which are the same now as in ancient times, are portrayed. Indeed, the world portrayed by dolls seems more profoundly hu-man than the human world we are normally ac-customed to. This unique Japanese performing art is a must-see in Japan!

This winter, Hakodate will be a hot spot, so to speak Th e Tohoku Shinkansen Line is to be extended to Shin-Aomori

and the entire line will open on December 4, 2010. Changing to the Tsugaru-Kaikyo Line at Shin-Aomori Station, you will be able to ar-rive at Hakodate, a hub of southern Hokkaido, much faster than now. Hakodate spreads out in a fan-like shape at the foot of Mount Hakodate-yama, and juts out into the Tsugaru Straits. It has a lot of slopes. It is not a large city but full of history and culture, onsen hot springs, nature, spectacular night views and culinary delights. Let's go to Hakodate this winter!

Hakodate Christmas FantasyHakodate, which celebrated the 150th anni-versary of the port opening to foreign coun-tries last year, also holds many attractive events this year as well. Among them, Hakodate Christmas Fantasy 2010 in particular is garner-ing much attention. Th e event started in 1998, but this year is special. A huge and imposing fi r tree that is presented every year by Halifax in Canada, the twin city of Hakodate, is to be decorated with about 50,000 light bulbs and displayed in the bay area of Hakodate. Th is event takes place from December 1 (Wed) to 25 (Sat), and during the period of the event, the tree-lighting ceremony is held at 5:50 p.m. and fi reworks are launched everyday. Th e Christmas illumination and fi reworks will cre-ate a fantastic atmosphere.

Quite fantastic as it may be – it is still winter. Especially in the evening, it is chilly. Famous restaurants in Hakodate will each open a soup bar at the event venue. A delicious original soup is sure to help keep you warm. And volunteer staff members who wear Santa Claus costumes will entertain you and a huge wall painting will be displayed.

Hakodate Christmas Fantasy Bus will run, and JR Hakodate will operate SL Hakodate Christmas Fantasy on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and the 23 (holiday) from December 4 to 25. (both are charged)

Sightseeing Spots

MotomachiFor sightseeing in the city, using a tram is very convenient. When getting off at Suehiro-cho Station and going up Motoi-zaka Slope, passing the Old British Consulate of Hakodate on the left side, you soon reach Motomachi Park. Th is is a park built on the place where the Hakodate Magistrate's Offi ce and Hokkaido Development Commissioner’s Offi ce from the Meiji to early Showa period (the late 19th to early 20th cen-tury) were located. Th e park is home to the Old Branch Offi ce of the Hokkaido Government.

Th e Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward, locat-ed next to Motomachi Park, is a wooden Western-style building built in 1910. You can get a sweep-ing view of the sea from Hachiman-zaka Slope and many fi lms, dramas and TV commercials have been shot there. Th e top of the slope is the best place for a bird's-eye view of Hakodate Port.

Motomachi is also home to the Russian Orthodox Church, Motomachi Roman Catholic Church, Hakodate Episcopal Church, and several other churches. Th is area is full of exotic and historic atmosphere. Several cafes command a fi ne view, and restaurants and souvenir shops based in buildings built in the early 20th century also add fl avor to the area.

One of the Best Night Views in JapanTh e night view of the port from the bay area, which is the venue of Hakodate Christmas Fantasy, is recommended, but the night view from Mount Hakodate-yama (334m) is considered a highlight of Hakodate sightseeing. A 10-minute walk from tram Juji-gai Station takes you to Sanroku (foot of the mountain) Station of Mount Hakodate Ropeway. Taking just three minutes to reach the summit by cable car (an amazing 125 people can fi t in each car), the views of the sparkling, fan-shaped city are beautiful. Th is nighttime view is traditionally said to be one of the Th ree Famous Nighttime Views in the world, along with those of Naples in Italy and Hong Kong. For those want-ing to take in the night view, take the cable car up between 30 minutes and two hours after sunset. After 10 p.m., the illuminated displays in the town below are turned off and the town darkens.

Goryokaku Park/Yunokawa OnsenGoryokaku (Five Corner) Fortress, the first Western-style fortress in Japan, constructed in the mid 19th century, is in Goryokaku Park and open to the public as a historic site. The Hakodate Magistrate's Office of the Tokugawa Shogunate was reconstructed in July 2010 us-ing the original construction techniques, and has been attracting many visitors. The 107-me-ter Goryokaku Tower, which was built in 2006, is a landmark. A star-shaped structure can be seen from the tower and this is the remaining foundation of Goryokaku Fortress. In spring, blossoms of 1,600 cherry trees and Japanese wisteria bloom in the park, and in winter the park is illuminated at night.

Yunokawa Onsen, a spa opened in 1653, is one of the largest hot springs in Hokkaido. Its water is rich in chloride salt, and is good for rheumatism and neuralgia. Being close to the center of Hakodate and Hakodate Airport, it is convenient to take a day trip and soak in a bath. Also, you can stay at a hotel or ryokan, enjoying the onsen atmosphere in a more lei-surely manner. At some hotels and ryokans, you can leisurely soak in a big bath, gazing at the night fishing fires on fishing boats out on the ocean. It is sure to be a memorable experience of Hakodate.

FoodSpeaking of food of Hakodate, you cannot miss the seafood. There are numerous restau-rants serving fresh squid, which is a specialty of Hakodate, crabs, sea urchins, and salmon caviar. Asa-ichi, the morning market, is locat-ed within a one-minute walk from Hakodate Station. About 300 vendor stalls sell fresh seafood brought ashore that very morning, as well as fresh vegetables and fruits. The mar-ket starts to get busy in early morning and is also home to many seafood restaurants.

Sushi and dishes using fresh ingredients such as squid and other seafood are popular, and so are Hakodate salt ramen noodles, a typical ramen of Hokkaido. "Lucky Pierrot" hamburger shops are favored by local people for fresh-from-the-grill, hot and hearty burgers and you can choose from a vari-ety of types.

Other EventsHakodate Illumination Fantasy takes place from December 1 to February 28. The three slopes in the Motomachi district are lit up by illuminations which are attached to trees along the streets. The illuminated town that is covered

At Goryokaku Park, Goryo Hoshi no Yume event is held from December 1 to February 27. The 1.8km of moats are illuminated and the Goryo Fortress shines like a star on the snow.

Hakodate, not So FarThe usual access from Tokyo to Hakodate is by airplane or train. It takes about 90 minutes from Haneda Airport to Hakodate Airport by plane. As the airport is close to the town, you can get to Hakodate in about two hours. If you use trains, go to Shin-Aomori by Tohoku Shinkansen bullet train and then on to Hakodate by lim-ited express. In the fastest case, you can arrive at Hakodate within six hours. In addition, if the Hokkaido Shinkansen starts operating as planned in 2015, you will be able to get to Shin-Hakodate surprisingly in just four hours and 10 minutes at the fastest speed.

Mount Takao is blessed with abundant nature. You can casually enjoy hik-ing and recently it has been becom-

ing popular as a “spiritual spot.” Hachioji has several spas where you can relax for a couple of hours, and attractive restaurants and bars. Enjoy a one-day trip from Tokyo!

Mount TakaoMount Takao, 599 meters high, is located in western Tokyo, 50 km away from the center of Tokyo. A mere 50-minute train ride from Shinjuku Station will take you to a splendid nat-ural environment, where you will forget you are still within metropolitan Tokyo! This mountain is popular as a place where you can enjoy hiking in a casual manner, and also has long been fa-miliar to ordinary people for mountain worship. The forests around the mountain retain variet-ies of woods such as deciduous trees like beech and evergreen trees like oak. Mount Takao was awarded three stars of the Michelin Voyage Pratique Japon in 2007 along with Mount Fuji.

You will find many shops and restaurants from Keio Takaosanguchi Station to Cable Car Kiyotaki Station. There are also cafes and res-taurants in the middle and even on top of the mountain, so you won’t have any difficulty to

drink or eat something on the mountain. If you want to eat a box lunch in the open air, buying some food at these shops is a good idea. Head for Cable Car Kiyotaki Station. The cable car and the lift is the easiest way to go to the sum-mit area if you are not the hiking type.

If you are a good walker, hiking the moun-tain is very enjoyable. There are three trails from the side of Kiyotaki Station, and each trail will take you to the top in about 90 minutes. For very beginners, 1-goro (Trail 1) is recommend-ed. You can enjoy walking along a mountain stream in 6-goro (Trail 6), and you can enjoy nice views via the Inariyama Trail. Although Mount Takao is low, it is a mountain, so please be careful. Prepare rain gear and something to drink, wear a hat and shoes that comfortably fit you. Even if only using the cable car, wearing high-heeled shoes is not recommended.

From the observation deck near Takaosan Cable Car Station, you can see a panoramic view of the Kanto Plain, centering on high-rise structures in downtown areas such as Tokyo Tower and Yokohama Landmark Tower.

Takao Beer Mount is open from July to the end of September every year. It is a very popular beer garden with a breathtaking view of Tokyo and Yokohama. This view is popularly called the “10 million dollar night view.”

Go through the Trail 1, and find Monkey Park and the Wild Plant Garden. Watching the doings of about 50 free-range monkeys is in-teresting. Passing a gigantic cedar called “Tako sugi” (octopus cedar), you will reach a fork in the trail. One way is Otoko-zaka (male slope) with 108 stone steps and the other way is Onna-zaka (female slope) with a more gentle slope. The two ways join together later. The cedar-lined trail continues and these cedars are said to be 450 years old. They are 6 meters in diameter and the tallest ones are about 37 meters in height.

Yakuo-in Temple is the head temple of the Chizan School of the Shingon Sect of Buddhism. It is home to a tradition of ascetic training for

yamabushi (mountain priests) and also numer-ous folk stories of long-nosed tengu goblins. In the precincts, a large tengu statue and a small tengu statue faces each other. Hiwatari Matsuri, or Fire-Walking Ritual, annually takes place at a square in front of the Kito-den Hall at the foot of Mount Takao on the second Sunday of March. Small pieces of wood are burned to pray for a perfect state of health in the year ahead. When the fires die down, yamabushi bravely walk bare-foot over the hot coals, praying for perfect health and the well-being of the family, which is the climax of the ritual. Ordinary people can par-ticipate in the fire-walking if they so desire.

If you climb a little more from Yakuo-in, you will reach the top of the mountain. There is a visitor center and restaurants, and an observa-tion deck is at the back. On clear days, Mount Fuji can be seen right in the front of your line of sight. Mount Takao has nature trails where you can observe and learn about nature in all seasons. Boards explaining animals, plants, in-sects and wild birds that are peculiar to Mount Takao are set up along the trails.

After enjoying the rich national environ-ment, go back down the mountain through your favorite route. Blessed with abundant spring wa-ter, Mount Takao is also known for its delicious soba, or buckwheat noodle, shops since olden days. Other dishes such as tororo soba, or buck-wheat noodle with grated yam, river fish dishes, and mugitoro, a boiled mixture of rice and barley topped with grated yam, are also available.

Pleasure after HikingHachioji City, home of Mount Takao, pros-pered as a post-station town of Koshu-kaido Way during the Edo period (1603-1867). Now, with 550,000 residents and 21 universities and colleges, this academic city has many sightsee-ing spots.

Let’s go to Takao Station from Keio Takaosanguchi Station. Tama Shinrin Kagakuen (Tama Forest Center), close to Takao Station,

boasts beautiful scenery of seasonal flowers and trees. At Musashiryo Bochi (Musashi Hill Cemetery), which is also close to the station and has a solemn feel amid the surrounding grove of trees, there are the graves of Emperor Taisho and Emperor Showa. If you go further, you will reach the remains of Hachioji Castle, which was built in the 16th century and was one of the promi-nent mountain castles in the Kanto region.

There are many shopping and gourmet spots around JR Hachioji Station, such as a depart-ment store, fashion buildings and various spe-cialty shops. There is a spa in a building near the station and there you can relax a while and soak away the fatigue of the hiking.

Mitsui Outlet Park Tama Minami Osawa is in front of Minami-Osawa Station on the Keio Sagamihara Line. You may find some items that catch your fancy at bargain prices at more than 100 shops in the outlet mall.

Away from Tokyo, enjoy a day-trip full of both splendid nature and urban amenities.

Fukushima is divided into three areas: Hama-dori (Coastal area), Naka-dori (Central area), and the Aizu area

(Western area). We, att.JAPAN, this time feature the Aizu area, which is blessed with abundant natural beauty, history, delicious food and hot springs.

SAMURAI CITY – AizuwakamatsuAizuwakamatsu, the center of the Aizu area, is loc ated in the wes t of Fukushima Prefecture. As the home territory of the M a t s u d a i r a c l a n , w h i c h h a d c l o s e connections with the Tokugawa Shogunate, warriors were walking around the town until only 200 years ago. Old buildings that were built in the Edo period (1603-1868) remain in the streets from Aizuwakamatsu Station to "Tsuruga-jo Castle," a symbol of the city. If you are lucky, you will see male town guides who wear traditional samurai clothing.

"Tsuruga-jo Castle" is now refurbished, so you can get a close look at

s h a c h i h o k o, d o l p h i n - l i ke decorations that are usually placed on the roof of a castle (until Nov 23, 2010). A two-carat diamond is fixed

in eac h of t hei r eye s . At "Rinkaku," a tearoom in the

precincts, you can enjoy drinking green powdered tea. "Oyakuen" is a Japanese stroll-type garden, using the natural scenery around it very effectively. You can walk around the garden. It is a

typical and gorgeous garden of its type, made by the lord, and is also a

m e d i c i n a l herb garden.

At "Ochaya-Goten" in the garden, you can experience green powdered tea.

"A i z u B u k e Y a s h i k i " ( S a m u r a i Residential Quarter) is a historical theme park including the residence of a chief retainer of Aizu Domain. You can see around a brewery storehouse at "Aizu Sake Brewing Museum," which is run by the Miyaizumi Brewery. The highest institution of learning of Aizu Domain is reproduced as "Aizu Hanko Nisshin-Kan." You can experience seated meditation, Japanese archery and other activities there such as making a hand painting of akabeko (red cow), which is a traditional good-luck charm of Aizu, and a decorated candle, which is a famous local product. It takes about 10 minutes by car from the center of the city to Higashiyama Onsen. This is a venerable hot spring resort with a 1,300 years of history.

AIZU RAILWAY – Minami AizuAizu Railway is a peaceful local line from Aizuwakamatsu to Aizukogen Ozeguchi. There is a lot of beautiful scenery and numerous hot springs along the line. "Oza-Toro-Tembo Train" with a tatami-floored carriage, tram carriage, and observation carriage is very popular in this season. It runs on special days.

One of the stations of Aizu Rairway, "Yunokami Onsen Station" building, has a thatched roof and it is today Japan's only one such type of station building. "Ouchijuku" is a small village. It was an old post town during the Edo period and still exudes an atmosphere of those bygone days. There are restaurants and minshuku (guest houses). Why not try local specialties such as negisoba, or buckwheat noodles which you eat with a Japanese leek (negi) instead of chopsticks, and tochimochi (rice cake)?

At "To no Hetsuri," when you pass a suspension bridge, you will see spreading before you an other-worldly landscape of rocks that have been eroded or weathered by a river, rain and wind. Ashinomaki Onsen is located 25 minutes by car from the center of Aizuwakamat su and also c lose to "Ouchijuku." It boasts an abundance of spring water, and the valley views are splendid. Walking along trails around the spa is enjoyable. If you have time, going to Aizu Kogen Plateau and Oze, where nature i s s t i l l p r i s t i n e , a n d t r e k k i n g i s recommended.

Nestled in the Northern Alps, which are the highest and steepest moun-tain ranges of Japan, there are fi ve

hot springs resorts collectively called Okuhida Onsengou.

Hirayu Onsen, located at an altitude of 1,283 meters, is the oldest and most vener-able spa of Okuhida. It has long prospered as a hub of neighboring sightseeing spots such as Takayama and Shinhotaka, Gifu Prefecture, and Kamikochi, Nagano Prefecture. It is home to a variety of lodging facilities from rustic inns to luxurious hotels. Hirayu Otaki Falls, one of three major waterfalls in the Hida region, is nearby.

Fukuchi Onsen is another rustic-feeling spa. Japan’s oldest fossil and other many fossils were discovered around the spa.

Shinhirayu Onsen is the center of the Okuhida area. It spreads along the western foot of Mount Yake-dake, one of the mountains of the Northern Alps, and is the largest hot spring resort of the area. With a lot of water sources, you can enjoy abundant water of a variety of qualities. Okuhida Bear Park, which is home to some 100 bears, is an enjoyable place to visit.

Tochio Onsen has a homely atmosphere. You can enjoy local cuisine of Okuhida in a relaxed and friendly manner.

Shinhotaka Onsen is in the middle of a large wilderness area, just at the foot of the Northern Alps. In the past, only alpinists stayed here as a mountain climbing base. However, after the opening of Shinhotaka Ropeway in 1970, or-dinary people became able to see 3,000-meter mountains at close range without climbing with their own feet. And now it is a popular spa at-tracting many tourists.

With about 140 open-air baths - said to be No.1 in Japan - the nostalgic feel of the mountainside villages, and beautiful scen-ery that changes dramatically with the sea-sons, it is sure that you will enjoy a unique and refreshing experience at the Okuhida Onsengou. Local specialties such as delicious Hida beef, wild vegetables and river fi sh are also recommended.

The sea and harbor are representative sce-nic attractions of Yokohama. Let’s walk around a park where you can enjoy the

sea breezes and a park where you can enjoy fi ne views overlooking the harbor.

When you go to the seaside from Nihon Odori Station on the Minato Mirai Line through Kaiko Hiroba (Open Port Square), you will fi nd Osanbashi Yokohama International Passenger Terminal. In 1975, the famous British cruise ship the Queen Elizabeth II came here. Th e Rooftop Plaza off ers panoramic views and the ocean breeze makes you feel cool and refreshed. You can see Yokohama Port spread out in front of you, the Red Brick Warehouse and a cluster of high-rise buildings in the Minato Mirai 21 area to your left, and Bay Bridge and boats that pass under the bridge on your right hand side. If you look further right, Yamashita Park, the Hikawa-maru, which is a retired luxury liner/museum moored at the park, and Yokohama Marine Tower will come into sight.

Yamashita Park stretches about 1 km from the entrance of Osanbashi to Yamashita Pier, facing the seaside. You can have a relaxed time simply lying down on the grass, looking around at seasonal fl owers in bloom, or strolling about seeing various sculptures and monuments in the open air.

Walking in the refreshing sea breeze from spring to summer is, of course, good, but walk-ing in autumn is also very enjoyable. Particularly

in late autumn, bright yellow-tinged leaves cre-ate a fascinating landscape. From the pedes-trian bridge connecting Yamashita Park and Yokohama Doll Museum, you can enjoy a splendid view of ginkgo trees along Yamashita-Koen-dori Street.

Yokohama Doll Museum houses about 13,000 dolls from 140 countries around the world, and special exhibits are also held from time to time. Why not drop in?

Minato no Mieru Oka Koen (Harbor View Park) is on the hill commanding a view of Yokohama Port. It has a diff erent appeal from that of Yamashita Park, which is along the seafront. Military personnel of the U.K. and France were stationed here when Japan opened Yokohama Port to foreigners in the mid-19th century. Walk along the trail through a wooded area called France Yama (“French mountain”) to the observatory, the top of which commands a sweeping view of the port. Th e night view is outstanding. Osaragi Jiro Kinenkan (Memorial Hall), Kanagawa Museum of Modern Literature and Igirisu-Kan (English House) are on the south side. About 1,800 roses bloom beauti-fully in the Rose Garden, especially in May and October. Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery and some historic Western-style houses, which are popular sightseeing places, are not very far from here.

Enjoy a leisure walk in two fi ne parks of Yokohama!

Student: Laetitia OgawaI was born in France and grew up there. I mar-ried a Japanese man. Because Japanese food is good for the health and my son and husband both like it very much, I want to master Japa-nese recipes.

Instructor: Kazuko KarasawaI learned cooking from my parents, who ran a Japanese restaurant, and my grandmother, who lived to be 100 years old. As a housewife, I've been cooking for 18 years. I like cooking everyday, taking care of my family’s health.

I sometimes find it difficult to eat fish because of its smell, but this recipe is good and I’ll certainly try it again!

Cooking directions:Remove the salmon from the fridge 20 minutes before cooking and warm to room temperature. Sprinkle with salt and sake.

Remove the stems of the shiitake mushrooms and slice the heads thinly. The stems can also be used and should be sliced lengthwise.

Trim the stems of the enoki mushrooms and by hand divide the bunch into roughly 5 stalks.

Trim the stems of the shimeji mushrooms and by hand divide the bunch into roughly 1-2 stalks.

Slice the carrot into 4 round slices and cut into the desired shape using a cutter.

Prepare 4 sheets of aluminum foil 30cm by 30cm and lightly spread butter in the center so as to prevent the sh from sticking to the foil and also to add avor.

Place a piece of salmon in the center of the foil, adding mushrooms to cover the sh, and conclude by putting the carrot on top.

Fold and seal the two sides of the foil to cover the ingredients, and seal the other two sides.

Place the 4 foil-wrapped pieces in a pan. Pour hot water in the pan to depth of 1cm. Cover the pan and steam for about 10 minutes over a high heat. If the water boils away during cooking, add hot water as needed.

Serve by placing the foil on a plate with quartered yuzu.

Open the foil, squeeze the yuzu, and add butter and soy sauce to taste.

Tips:A steamer can be used as an alternative to a pan. Make sure you tightly seal the foil to prevent water from entering.

With carrot, it seems like a mountain of orange maple leaves in autumn!

Take care not to be burned

by hot steam when opening the foil.

Any mushroom is OK. Divide the bunch into as small stalks as possible to make delicious.

RailJapan is covered in a rail network that reaches to almost every corner of the archipelago. Most are owned and run by the Japan Railway (JR) system and the world famous “Shinkansen” bullet train is of course one of the fastest and most enjoyable forms of land transport any-where -- the distance between Tokyo and Osaka being covered in just 2hrs 30 mins on the fastest line.Japan Rail Pass allows you to use the whole JR system (including the Shinkansen) but is only sold outside Japan. 28,300 yen gets you a full 7 day ticket (adults). For more info, check the Japan Rail Pass web-site: http://japanrailpass.net

BusLong-distance buses in Japan are run by numer-ous companies including JR. Buses are gener-ally more economic than traveling by plane or train but do take longer and can be aff ected by traffi c jams at busy times of the day or night.Local buses run all over Japan as well as in the major cities and sometimes English instruc-tions or stop announcements are used but this is not the case everywhere. We would recom-mend you ask drivers to remind you of where you must disembark prior to setting off .

BoatThere are many sea routes connecting Hokkaido, the Honshu mainland, Shikoku, Kyushu and Okinawa, respectively. There are also many sea routes to remote islands. Sea fare is usually less expensive than airfare. There are also international routes to China, Taiwan, South Korea and Russia.

TaxisJapanese taxis can be found at the exit to every train station in the country or alterna-tively hailed on the streets. The red sign vis-ible through the windshield of the car: “空車” (kusha) means it is vacant and available for hire but when the sign reads “賃走” (chinso), it is

unavailable. The back door on the left side will open and close automatically so be careful not to stand too close! (All the other doors are op-erated manually) Rates vary depending on the taxi company but usually start at a fi xed rate of 710 yen (in Tokyo) for the fi rst two kilometers. The rate system is shown inside the taxi and re-ceipts can be issued.

In big cities, such as Tokyo and Osaka, the un-der and over ground train system is well orga-nized and highly effi cient accessing any and all parts of the cities. To avoid wasting time lining up for tickets and working out how to use the machines in diff erent stations, it is highly rec-ommended to purchase pre-paid cards.

Transportation cards/useful ticketsIf planning to stay in Japan for a longer period why not try using IC cards? (500 yen deposit returned when returning the card) Simply touch the card on a rectangular pad beside the ticket gate and the fare used is automatically deducted from the value of the card. In Tokyo the cards are known as Suica or PASMO and are accepted on JR lines, subways and most other railways and buses.

The Tokyo Furii Kippu (東京フリーきっぷ) (http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/pass/) is available for use on JR lines (inside Tokyo’s 23 wards), subways, and the Toei Bus service for one whole day -- ending at midnight -- at a charge of 1,580 yen.

Transportation cards/useful ticketsIn the Kansai (Osaka) area ICOCA or PiTaPa is available IC cards similar to Suica / PASMO.

The Kansai Thru Pass (スルッと関西) (http://www.surutto.com/) off ers a similar service to the Tokyo Furii Kippu in Kansai and enables subway, railway (bar JR lines), and bus use throughout the Kansai area. Price - 3,800 yen for 2 days or 5,000 yen for 3 days.

Tourist InformationTransportation /
