In Kawagoe, a stroll along the street lined with traditional storehouses to feel the ambience of Edo (former Tokyo) is within

three hours.Th ere are about 20 candy shops along the

stone-paved Kashiya Yokocho (Penny Candy Alley) selling candy, rice crackers, dango dump-lings, ice cream and other taste treats. Why not buy some to nibble on while walking through Kawagoe. Go east along the main street with its many storehouses and you will come to Honmaru Goten, part of the former Kawagoe Castle.

Th e Kita-in Temple (Kawagoe Daishi) was founded in about 830 by Jikaku Daishi Ennin. Th e temple was closely associated with the Tokugawa Government; for example, “the birthplace of the third Shogun Iemitsu” and “the dressing room for Kasuga no Tsubone,” Iemitsu’s nanny, were moved here from Edo Castle in Tokyo. Kita-in Temple is also famous for “Gohyaku Rakan,” more than 500 statues of Rakan (arhats) were created over the 50 years between 1782 and 1825. Th e 538 statues have a delightful variety of facial expressions. Senba Toshogu Shrine, one of the three major

Toshogu shrines in Japan, is located south of Kita-in Temple.

Th e Kawagoe Festival is held annually on the third Saturday and Sunday of October. Gorgeous fl oats with elaborately made dolls are paraded around town. When two fl oats meet, they compete in dancing and making music. Th is is called “Hikkawase” and is the highlight of the festival. Kawagoe Matsuri Kaikan (fes-tival hall) has an exhibit of 29 of the colorful fl oats. (admission: 300 yen).

During the Edo period (1603-1867), the cul-tivation of sweet potatoes began in Kawagoe. Now, ice cream and even beer are made from sweet potatoes. Kawagoe has designated 18th day of every month “Kimono Day” and, on this day, anybody in kimono will receive discounts and special off ers at more than 100 shops in the city. Kimonos are available to rent.

Chichibu is nestled in the mountains in the westernmost part of Saitama Prefecture. Chichibu is where cement manufacturing devel-oped and had a prosperous silk fabric industry. In the early 20th century, many silk shops lined Kuromon and Kaitsugisho streets and some still remain. Recently, Chichibu has claimed fame as the setting of anime film “We Still Don’t Know the Name of the Flower We Saw That Day,” and many anime lovers visit this “sacred place.”

In Hitsujiyama Park, more than 400,000 pink moss flowers bloom from mid April to early May.

From Seibu Chichibu Station, stroll down Banba Street with its many retro-styled cafes, tobacco stores, and meat stores and you will come to Chichibu Shrine. It was built more than 2,000 years ago. Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, donated the current buildings in 1592. Elaborate carv-ings, such as the guardian “Tsunagi no Ryu” (chained dragon) and “Hokushin no Fukuro” (North Star owl) endowing success in academ-ics are a must-see. Chichibu Yomatsuri (night festival) takes place every December. Gorgeous floats are dynamically dashed up a steep slope for the highlight of the festival. Chichibu Matsuri Kaikan (festival hall) displays pictures, videos and artifacts of the festival.

Chichibu Muse Park is a place for sports and nature, and especially in spring and autumn

when the flowers are beautiful. Chichibu, designated a Japan Geo Park

in 2011, is great for nature hiking. Both seri-ous mountain climbing on Mt. Buko or the Shomaru-toge Pass depicted in the TV anime program “Initial D” and easy walking trails are available. Rental bikes are available at Chichibu Kanko Johokan (tourist information center) near Seibu Chichibu Station, so cycling is also an option. A cycling map is available at the in-formation center. Why not challenge the hike to Mitsumine Shrine, located at 1,100 meters above sea level and famous for wolf worship and the mysterious Lake Chichibu?

Thanks to the unique basin climate and the clear water of the Ara-kawa River, buckwheat noodles are delicious in Chichibu. Snacks called “kojuhan” are unique to the area and often eaten by the locals. “Miso potato” is potatoes fried with miso paste and “tansan manju” is a steamed bun made with baking soda. Pork in miso sauce and large cutlets called “waraji-kat-su” are also local taste treats. Confectionaries using maple syrup from the maple trees in the Chichibu mountains is a nice souvenir.

Ikebukuro Sta. → 78 min by limited express “Red Arrow” on the Seibu Ikebukukro/Chichibu lines → Seibu Chichibu Sta. Seibu Chichibu Nakamise Street with restaurants and souve-nir shops is in the station.

Nagatoro is famous for river cruising. The high-light of the cruise is viewing Iwadatami. a huge rock terrace, 80 meters wide and 500 meters long, eroded by the Ara-kawa River.

Nagatoro Funadama Matsuri festival is held on August 15 every year. Many lanterns are floated down the river along side colorfully dec-orated boats with musicians playing traditional music. It is a fantastic festival.

The river cruise offers two 3-km courses op-erating from March to December. Each course includes both gentle streams and thrilling rapids and takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The boatman points out the sights while skillfully poling the boat. Enjoy the contrast of lush greenery and steep rock cliffs.http://www.chichibu-railway.co.jp/line/

From the opposite side of the river as the sta-tion, a 15-minute walk brings you to Hodosan Shrine, awarded one star in the 2011 Michelin Green Guide Japan. The shrine was founded in 110 AD for the guardian deity to ward off fires and thefts. The many elaborate carvings in the colorful rooms are worth seeing. A 5-minute cable car ride from Hodosan Sanroku Station takes you to the top of Mt. Hodo with its many seasonal flowers, such as Japanese allspice, aza-leas and winter cherry blossoms. At Hodosan

Zoo, you can see Japanese monkeys, deer, sheep and rabbits. The shaved ice of Asami-reizo uses ice made from the naturally pure mountain wa-ter of Mt. Step back in time 1,000 years and discover the hidden charms of Japan. There are a number of places and things all over Japan that are generally unknown to tourists but are fascinating.

Among them, Shikoku in western Japan is with the place to see examples of the original scenery of Japan. While leisurely walking around, fond memories will come to mind.

Iya has been a hidden mysterious place for a long time. Surrounded by the steep Iya Valley, the only way to enter the region in the past was a mountain route of connecting passes at more than 1,000 meters above sea level. Secluded from the outside, unique customs and literary traditions developed and still remain. Even though this was a remote mountainous area, people have inhabited it. There is a legend that warriors of the Heike (Taira) clan defeated by the Genji (Minamoto) clan in the Battle of Yashima off Shikoku in 1185 fled there and set-tled in this region. An old house high up in the Ochiai village was renovated and opened in April 2012, as the Fusho (Floating Life) House with comfortable, modern accommodations. It was designed by Alex Kerr, an American writer with expertise in East Asian Art and Literature who has restored traditional town houses in Kyoto. The scenery is wonderful year-round with fresh green foliage in the spring, mountains in the haze of rainy sea-son, the dark green leaves of summer, autumn leaves, and snow-covered mountains in winter.

This commercial town in western Tokushima Prefecture faces midstream of the Yoshino River, the longest river in Shikoku. It once prospered as one of the biggest trading centers of Awa-ai (indigo dye), a specialty of this area, and many of the large houses and storehouses of the wealthy merchants lined the streets. Many houses in the town have udatsu, wing walls from the second floor, and tiled roofs. Udatsu were originally built to prevent fire from spreading between neighboring houses but became a symbol of wealth and merchants competed in building splendid udatsu.

AccessTake the JR Chuo Line from Shinjuku and change to the Fujikyu Railway train at Otsuki.

Railfans will enjoy riding on the “Azusa” and “Kaiji” limited express trains on the JR Chuo Line, and the

Climbing Mt. Fuji in SummerThe season for climbing Mt. Fuji opens on July 1 with a ceremony and ends in late August. It is best for most people to climb during this period when the mountain

lodges and rst-aid centers are in business, although experienced mountain climbers sometimes climb in other seasons. The routes are well maintained and no special

climbing techniques are necessary. More than 200,000 people of all ages climb the mountain every year. The average temperature, however, at the summit is around 5

degrees C even in summer and there may be strong winds and heavy rain. There is also the risk of lightning and altitude sickness. Because Mt. Fuji is more than 3,000 meters

high, you should be well prepared the equipment and serious about the climb.

Enjoy Mt. Fuji using Mt. Fuji Round Trip Ticket

Climbing Routes

There are four main climbing routes. The “Yoshida Route” is in Yamanashi Prefecture (the Kawaguchiko side) with two trail

entrances. Starting at the 5th Station (gogome) of the Fuji Subaru Line Road, also called the Kawaguchiko entrance, is the most

popular. The guidelines say it requires 6 hours 50 minutes to go up and 3 hours 20 minutes to come down. There are many lodges

along the way so you will feel safe. Not only from the summit but also from the 7th or 8th stations, you can see the sunrise. Hike up

among the lava rocks on the sand gravel trail. The lower entrance is 1st Station (ichigome) and takes an estimated time of 9 hours up and 4 hours 40 minutes down.

This trail has retained an old-time atmosphere and recently has been attracting Mt. Fuji lovers as the best way to enjoy the Great Nature of the revered mountain.

There are sightseeing spots along the trail, such as the Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine at the foot.

Kongozue, a pilgrim's walking stick sold at the entrances for about 1,000 yen, can be branded by each lodge you pass for around 200 yen. It is a good souvenir.

AccessTake the JR Chuo Line from Shinjuku and change to the Fujikyu Railway train at Otsuki.

Railfans will enjoy riding on the “Azusa” and “Kaiji” limited express trains on the JR Chuo Line, and the

“Fuji-tozan densha” and “Fujisan tokkyu” on the Fujikyuko Line. The “Kawaguchiko-go” rapid train runs

Water Bus A boats start from Asakusa, an old district near TOKYO SKYTREE® and goes down the Sumida River. You will find the famous Tsukiji fish market on the right-hand side 30 minutes after the start, then the boat turns right and ar-rives at Hamarikyu Gardens. This is a beauti-ful Japanese garden with tearooms and seasonal flowers. Another boat bound for Odaiba passes under the Rainbow Bridge and heads for Odaiba Kaihin Park. Among a number of design boats plying these waterways, the "Himiko" fleet is eye-catching. The boat designed by the famous cartoonist Leiji Matsumoto is a sleek futuristic design and looks like a spacecraft. (http://www.suijobus.co.jp/)

Old-fashioned Houseboat (Yakatabune)Some of you saw scores of boats with a large number of lanterns floating on the sea from the plane to Haneda Airport. They are houseboats (yakatabune) with low roofs and tatami-mat flooring. They were popular in the Edo peri-od and still offer great night views of modern Tokyo. You have an opportunity to try tradi-tional Japanese foods including sushi and tem-pura on the boat. Viewing cherry blossoms in spring, fireworks in summer, and moon viewing in autumn from the boat is especially recom-mended. Most boats operate for private, char-tered use but some companies operate share-ride boats. The cost is about 10,500 JPY (100 JPY ≈ 1.25 USD) per person.Harumiya (http://www.harumiya.co.jp/e/)

Romantic Cruise in Tokyo BayA variety of cruise tours offer French and Italian dining while cruising Tokyo Bay. You will see fantastic views of illuminated high-rises and other structures on the land from the boat and, in particular, two bridges are a must-see. The Tokyo Gate Bridge just opened in February 2012 appears to be two dinosaurs facing off to many viewers. The Rainbow Bridge, a 798-me-ter suspension bridge connecting Shibaura and Odaiba, is illuminated after sunset and creates a breathtaking view. TOKYO SKYTREE® also can be seen. The view from the boat is surpris-ingly different than when seen from land. Enjoy the dramatic view.Vingt et un http://www.vantean.co.jp/english/Symphony http://www.symphony-cruise.co.jp/english/

Awara Onsen in northern Fukui Prefecture is over 120 years old and in a town famous for agriculture and sight-

seeing with hills to the north and paddy fields to the south. In 1883, a farmer was digging a well in a paddy field, and discovered hot water. It has since become a big hot spring resort with 27 ho-tels that attract celebrities and cultural figures.

There are as many as 46 sources and each ho-tel has unique water with different components. The temperature of the water ranges from 33.5 to 77.5 degrees Celsius. It is good for rheuma-tism, chronic dermatitis, and other maladies.

Saintpia Awara is a day spa built in 1994 to commemorate the 110th anniversary of opening of the Awara hot springs. Two unique bathing facilities, Ten-no-Yu and Chi-no-Yu, alternate weekly for men or for women. Onsen-tamago, or partially hard-boiled eggs, can be cooked in the water on the 1st floor.

“Awara Onsen Yumeguri-tegata” is a special pass that

allows spa access (three times) to any hotel in

Awara Onsen and Saintpia Awara to partake of the

different waters in a casual manner.

Sightseeing spots, such as

Tojinbo and Eihei-ji Temple, are also in the vi-cinity. Tojinbo, a national monument of scenic beauty, offers a dynamic view of the 25-meter high cliffs cut by wave erosion. Eihei-ji, the head temple of the Soto Buddhism sect was founded by the high priest Dogen in 1244 and, even now, more than 200 monks undergo training there. At Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum there is a fantastic and mysterious dinosaur world.

As for dining, “Echizen-gani” crab is a local specialty in winter because the season for catch-ing crab starts in November. Watermelons, mel-ons, and “Koshi no ruby” tomatoes are delicious and picking yourself is available at some farms.

Student: Laetitia OgawaI was born in France and grew up there. I mar-ried a Japanese man. Because Japanese food is good for the health and my son and husband both like it very much, I want to master Japa-nese recipes.

Instructor: Kazuko KarasawaI learned cooking from my parents, who ran a Japanese restaurant, and my grandmother, who lived to be 100 years old. As a housewife, I've been cooking for 18 years. I like cooking everyday, taking care of my family’s health.

Miso meat sauce is very delicious. It goes surprisingly well with somen and the preparation is not difficult.

Cooking directions:SomenTo make the broth, bring to a boil the mirin and soy sauce in a pan. Add the dashi stock and bring to boil again. Remove from heat and let cool. Prepare condiments and toppings, such as negi, myoga, shiso and grated ginger.

Add the noodles, separating while adding, to a large pot of boiling water. Cook the noodles according to the instructions on the package, usually 1 to 3 minutes. Drain immediately in a colander, wash with cold running water and toss by hand. Arrange on a serving plate.

Serve with condiments, toppings and dipping sauce.

VariationMiso meat saucePlace minced chicken, sake, soy sauce, sugar and miso in a pan and stir using chopsticks over low heat. Reduce the liquid and remove from the heat when only a thin layer of broth remains. Add the ginger juice to the sauce and stir while cooling.

Kinshi tamago (shredded egg crepes)Beat the eggs with the salt. Heat a small frying pan, add the oil, pour in the beaten egg and quickly fry to make a thin egg crepe. Remove any excess egg liquid. When the surface appears dry, ip, lightly cook the other side, and remove from the pan. Two eggs will make 2 or 3 crepes, depending on the size of the pan. Cool and shred the crepes into thin strips. See the website.

Other suggested toppingsThinly sliced sweetened shiitake mushrooms, Julienned cucumber, Shredded lettuce, Tomatoes.

Tips:During the hot summer, people tend to have less of an appetite. Somen is light and easy to eat so it is a popular dish in summer. For more nutrition, it is sometimes served with tempura. Variations of somen with vegetables or with miso and meat are also available.

Slightly thicker noodles, hiyamugi, are prepared the same way but have a dierent texture.

Rail

Japan is covered in a rail network that reaches to almost every corner of the archipelago. Most are owned and run by the Japan Railway (JR) system and the world famous “Shinkansen” bullet train is of course one of the fastest and most enjoyable forms of land transport anywhere – the distance between Tokyo and Osaka being covered in just 2hrs 30 mins on the fastest line.

主要有JR(Japan Railway Co., Ltd., 日本旅客鐵路)運行著,在這當

Japan Rail PassJapan Rail Pass allows you to use the whole JR system (including the Shinkansen) but is only sold outside Japan. 28,300 yen gets you a full 7 day ticket (adults).

For more info, check the Japan Rail Pass website:詳情請看JAPAN RAIL PASS的網站 www.japanrailpass.net

Bus 巴士 Long-distance buses in Japan are run by numerous companies including JR. Buses are generally more economic than travel-ing by plane or train but do take longer and can be aff ected by traffi c jams at busy times of the day or night.Local buses run all over Japan as well as in the major cities and sometimes English instructions or stop announcements are used but this is not the case everywhere. We would recom-mend you ask drivers to remind you of where you must disem-bark prior to setting off .

Taxis 計程車

Japanese taxis can be found at the exit to every train station in the country or alternatively hailed on the streets. The red sign visible through the windshield of the car: “空車” (kusha) means it is vacant and available for hire but when the sign reads “賃走” (chinso), it is unavailable. The back door on the left side will open and close automatically so be careful not to stand too close! (All the other doors are operated manually) Rates vary depending on the taxi company but usually start at a fi xed rate of 710 yen (in Tokyo) for the fi rst two kilometers. The rate system is shown inside the taxi and receipts can be issued. In urban areas, you can usually pay by credit card for a taxi. If credit cards are accepted, a taxi has a sticker showing this on the window.
