Multidisciplinary International

Student Workshop in Tokyo Tech

2010

August 5-6, 2010

Tokyo Tech Ookayama-campus Tokyo, Japan

Sponsored by

Graduate School of Engineering Tokyo Institute of Technology

Welcome to the Multidisciplinary International Student Workshop 2010

On behalf of the School of Engineering at Tokyo Institute of Technology (abbreviated to Tokyo

Tech), I am pleased to extend a hearty welcome to all the participants at this workshop.

This is the third time to hold this type of summer activity on campus. In response to the large

number of participating students and favorable evaluation from last year ’s attending students, the

School of Engineering is proud to sponsor this year ’s workshop.

The aim of this workshop is to bring together approximately 90 graduate students from various

disciplines to promote interactions and scientific discussions. Students attending this workshop are

composed of three different groups: Japanese and overseas students at Tokyo Tech as well as

short-term exchange students. We relish the fact that 13 exchange students from AOTULE (Asia

Oceania Top University League on Engineering) will spend their summer with us working on

research projects with our faculty. It is well known that students that are involved in overseas

academic exchanges will more likely be involved in international activities throughout their

lifetime.

In addition to the student poster and oral presentations, three plenary talks have been selected

to give you a broader understanding of key topical issues from industry and academia such as my

talk on “Sustainable Development” as well as Professor Motoyuki Suzuki’s lecture on

“Sustainability of Asia/Oceania Region”. Furthermore, we are pleased to welcome Mr. Glen

Fukushima, Airbus Japan Chairman & Director, who will talk about his global technology

management experience in the USA and Japan. I hope that this student workshop stimulates your

research and provides you with an opportunity for cross-cultural information exchange.

Keynote 2 8/5 (Thu.) 16:30-17:30 @ Royal Blue Hall, TTF

Global Technology Management

Glen S. Fukushima

Chairman & Director, Airbus Japan

Former President & CEO, Cadence Design Systems Japan

Former President, American Chamber of Commerce in Japan

I will discuss the challenges of managing global technology companies based on my

experience over the past 20 years working as a senior executive for one European and three

American high technology companies: AT&T Corp. (headquartered in Basking Ridge, New Jersey,

USA); Cadence Design Systems, Inc. (headquartered in San Jose, California, USA); NCR Corp.

(headquartered in Dayton, Ohio, USA); and Airbus SAS (headquartered in Toulouse, France).

First, I will explain the six main drivers of globalization, that is, major changes over the

past two decades in: (1) the political environment, (2) demand-side factors, (3) supply-side factors,

(4) technology, (5) government policy, and (6) the workforce.

Second, I will examine the key success factors for global technology companies and their

employees. Given the rapid globalization of companies and technologies, the ability to work

seamlessly and effectively across geographic, national, cultural, linguistic, and organizational

barriers is key.

Third, I will propose that gaining overseas study and work experience is an essential

component of developing the skills necessary for individuals and companies to be the technology

leaders of the future.

In conclusion, I would like to encourage Japanese students, on both the undergraduate and

graduate level, to spend time studying and working outside of Japan as a way to develop their

competencies as global citizens and future technology leaders.
