    What is Sharpening?

All digital photographs lose a certain amount of

sharpness. That means that most photographs

will look a bit blurred and their details wontbe as prominent. Basically, sharpening makes

the edges of a photographed object appear

    more distinct.

    Smart Sharpen

The Smart Sharpen tool is one option

that adds more flexibility that can

improve the sharpening process.Smart Sharpen is opened by selecting

There are two ways of working with the

Smart Sharpeninterface, Basic and Advanced. The

Advanced mode has the same settings as

Basic andallows you to fade the effect inthe shadows and/or highlights.

Amount: Like Unsharp Mask, a higher value

increases the contrast between edge pixels, giving the appearance of greater sharpness.

Radius: How far out do you want to apply theeffect? The greater the radius value, the wider

the area that will be subject to an increase incontrast. Enter too large a number and you willhave noticeable halos.

This option works like the Unsharp Mask

    filter and is the fastest.

    Lens Blur

This option does a great job looking foredges and detail and thus produces finer

    sharpening of detail.

    Motion Blur

this option has to do with improving thesharpness of images where there was blurring

due to motion (e.g., camera movement).

More Accurate:Processes the file twice for

better removal of blur and enhanced sharpness.Be warned, this option can double processing

    time.

    Advanced Settings

Fade Amount: This adjusts the amount of

sharpening in the highlights and/or shadows.

Fade it all the way (100%) to conceal the

sharpening. No fade (0%) gives maximumsharpening.

Tonal Width: This controls the range of tones

that are modified by Smart Sharpening. Thelower the setting the more subtle the result.

Radius: The slider works like Radius in Basicmode and controls the size of the area around

each pixel that is used to determine whether a

pixel is in the shadows or highlights.

    Unsharp Mask

Unsharp Mask is the heavy weight of all the

sharpening tools. This offers you a lot of

power and control over the sharpening

    process.

The amount changes the amount of contrast

between pixels. The more the amount the moreyou will notice a change in the picture. If you

set this too high then the halos around edges

will be too noticeable and the picture will look

terrible. The amount that you need is

determined by the subject matter and the

    resolution of the image.

The Radius is the size of the halo around the

edges. One side of the edge will have a lightercolor and the other side of the edge will have a

darker color. The number that you are

changing is the number of pixels surrounding

the high contrasting areas. High resolution

images will need a higher radius. Low

resolution images will need a lower radius.

The Threshold determines what exactly you

want an edge to be. Photoshop thinks thatcolors that are touching and are very different

from each other are edges. If your threshold is

set to 0 then everything will get sharpened

(including noise). This option allows you tochoose what should get sharpened. A threshold

of over zero will only sharpen areas with high

contrast and wont touch areas with lowcontrast.
