Management education in India is hardly 50 yrsold and it began as a part-time education for
practising executives.
Soon after gaining independence in 1947, makingeducation available to all had become a
priority for the government
After independence, Jawahar Lal Nehru wanted
to establish institutes similar to MIT and Harvard,
in India which will emerge as centre for
excellence in technology and management.

India surely needs more universities
Japan has 4,000 universities for its 127 millionpeople,
The US has 3,650 universities for its 301million,
India has only 417 universities level Institutionsfor its 1.2 billion people.

Central Government is responsible for major policyrelating to Management education in the country.
It provides grants to the UGC and establishes centraluniversities in the country.
Presently there are 25 Central Universities in thecountry.
The Central Government is also responsible fordeclaration of Educational Institutions as 'Deemed to beUniversity' on the recommendation of the UGC.
There are 99 Institutions which have been declared asDeemed to be Universities by the Govt. of India as perSection of the UGC Act, 1956.

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs),established by the Government of India, are the acebusiness schools in the country
The IIMs located at Ahmedabad, Calcutta, Bangalore,Lucknow, Indore and Kozhikode (Calicut) are
institutions of excellence. The IIM, Calicut commenced its academic session
from 1997-98, the IIM, Indore began its academicprogramme from 1998-99, a new one is coming up atShillong soon.
The IIMs conduct Post-Graduate Diploma Programmesin Management (equivalent to MBA), FellowshipProgrammes in Management Development andOrganisation-based Programmes as well as carry outresearch and consultancy for the industry.
