Ask and You Shall Receive

I have often said that my grandchildren are my greatestteachers. That was never so true as last fall when Irealized my grandson Drew was showing me how the

world works once again.“Nana,” Drew says in his phone call to me. “I don’t have

school on Friday.”That always means he wants me to do something with

him.“Well what do you want to do?” I asked.“I want to go skate boarding first. I am working on a

report for school on extreme sports for kids and I need you to video tape me.” Only Drew would choose that topic. He’s an extreme sports kind of guy.“And then I want you to take me and Jake kayaking and fishing. We can use my

dad’s truck to haul the kayaks.”“Let’s do it.” I said and we made our arrangements. He knows I will say yes. I will

do anything for my grandchildren.I love hanging with my grandson but what struck me more than anything else as

I mulled over our conversation was that he knew exactly what he wanted, he wasn’tafraid to ask for it and he expected to get it.

That Friday I picked up Drew and his buddy Jake and we did exactly that, only itincluded going to lunch as well. Sitting on the shore reading a book, it was funwatching the boys as they paddled around and fished, at times together, other timeson opposite sides of the lake. I had to drag them off the water after a good threehours. If the sun hadn’t been setting I’m sure they would have stayed out theremuch longer.

It occurred to me as I watched them that Drew again had taught me anotherlesson. I haven’t always asked for what I wanted, and I certainly didn’t expect to geteverything I desired. Perhaps it was the way my generation was raised — childrendidn’t ask for a lot — you were taught to be happy with what you got. Maybe it hasto do with being a woman and a mom; we tend to put everyone else’s needs first. Ormaybe it was the message my father used to say to me. “Sometimes you just have tomake do with what you have.” However those messages landed in my psyche, Irealized that I had allowed them to influence my life in so many ways.

Jesus said "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and thedoor will be opened to you.” We live in an unlimited universe, all that we want isavailable to us. It is up to us to ask and be open to receive. And bottom line: YOUGET WHAT YOU EXPECT. Do you expect good things to happen to you? Do youexpect to get what you want? Or do you settle for whatever shows up, taking whatyou can but never expecting more?

My resolution for 2016 is to change that. Beginning today I will use my voice andask for what I want. And by golly, I expect to get it.

May 2016 be the year you ask and receive all that you desire.

Beer & Yoga?A beer brewery might seem like an unlikely place for a yoga class, but for some, that’s a part of

the appeal. “The floors are concrete, and they’re usually a bit dirty. It’s loud from the glycolchiller,” said Beth Cosi, who teaches a class called Bendy Brewski at breweries around Charleston,SC. “Its garage band yoga. You’ve got to be OK with that.”

Cosi, who had worked in the restaurant business when she began teaching yoga said shenoticed how much her coworkers needed the practice. But no matter how much she invited themto come to her studio classes, they never came. She realized they were intimidated by the yogastudio, so she started offering yoga classes at a local brewery to make the practice more accessible.Following the classes with a beer tasting was a no brainer. “There’s a kind of serenity after a goodyoga class, and what followed was relaxing, slow conversation with no drama and no yoga hype,”Cosi said.

There are other advantages to practicing yoga where craft beer is brewed, too. From the smell of hops to the feeling ofcommunity, breweries offer a casual atmosphere that brings together students who might otherwise never practice yogawith seasoned practitioners who enjoy a good beer.

“Beer and yoga have a few things in common, but the most important is happiness,” said beer blogger and yoga teacherAdrienne Jenise, who teaches BrewAsanas in the Denver and Boulder, Colorado areas. “Both are soothing, relaxing, andlead to a casual social environment.” Yoga Journal

You're Not Sick, You're ThirstyYou are not just what you eat; you are what you drink. This is why water

is so important to your health. Dr. F. Batmanghelidj, MD believespromoting "water for health, for healing, for life" is an invaluable publichealth message. We can all change the way we drink. No miracles. Justcommon sense backed by Dr. Batmaghelidj’s years of research andinvestigation into why water works so well in keeping us healthy and painfree. Some of the benefits of water include:

1. Lowering Blood Pressure — The more water you drink, the more fluidsleave the blood vessel, causing your vessels to relax and your blood pressureto reduce.

2. Eliminating Toxins and Body Waste — When we become dehydratedtoxins saturate our blood and the flow is slowed down. Excess toxins are

stored in cells rather than being excreted from the body. The end result is that the cells do not function normally whichcan cause health problems including cancer.

3. Preventing and Treating Diabetes — Diabetics are not able to process sugar that is eliminated through urine drawingwater from the body. This can cause dehydration that can lead to serious health problems for diabetics. Drinkingenough water is therefore even more important for someone suffering from diabetes.

4. Preventing Osteoporosis — The formation of strong bones also needs adequate hydration and there is some evidencedehydration is responsible for the loss of calcium in bones that accompanies aging in many people.

According to Batmanghelidj, other health benefits of water include: Reducing Cholesterol Levels, Heart Attack andStroke; Eliminating Toxins and Body Waste; Strengthening the Immune System as well as positively influencing SleepDisorders, Neurological Disorders, Arthritis and Back Problems, Depression, Digestion, Eye Health, Skin Health, WeightLoss and Aging. www.watercure.com

Ten Green Business IdeasAlthough there are many options for starting your own green

business, here are ten eco-friendly ideas to consider:

1. Green franchises. Visit www.greenfranchisedirectory.com tolearn about green franchise concepts and opportunities.

2. Upcycle furniture. Old, broken furniture can be reassembled intonew chic pieces to sell.

3. Bicycle repair and refurbishing. Offer local cyclists light repairor cleaning services. If you have the space, you can purchaseinexpensive older bikes, fix them and sell them for a profit.

3. Green housecleaning services. Start a service that cleans usingonly all-natural and eco-friendly cleaning products.

5. Handmade all-natural/organic products. Create soaps, cosmetics, and cleaning products that are natural or organic. Even though most of us can make homemade recipes, having someone create it for us and package products for us in convenient sets makes life easier.

6. Recycling pickup. Create a service that picks up those items that homeowners’ recycling pickup will not. E-waste,batteries, and chemical products can end up in landfills because people do not know how or where to dispose of them.

7. Organic catering. Cater with foods that are made from organic and locally-grown ingredients, and offer free-rangemeats along with vegan, gluten-free and paleo-meal options.

8. Green app developer. Create apps to help users learn more about going green and guide them toward achieving theirsustainable lifestyle goals.

9. Sustainable event planner. Green event planners can use their green expertise and event-planning skills to find eco-friendly venues, materials, and accommodations to help curb the effects that meetings and events have on theenvironment.

10. Eco-friendly salon. Start a hair salon that uses all-natural shampoos and conditioners or a nail salon that usesenvironmentally friendly and vegan polishes and spa treatments.

which offered steam therapy, bodyscrubs, massages and oils applied aftertreatment to sooth the skin. Until thepresent time, many products have beenused to preserve moisture in the skinand enhance beauty.

Today, the science of cosmetologyoffers a great variety of products tochoose from. First, determine your skintype, then select an appropriate product. In our Colorado climate, skin typicallyneeds a moisturizer. Lotions, hydratorsand creams add moisture to the skin andare used twice daily after cleansingto protect and nourish the skin.

A person with oily skin prone toacne still needsmoisture, buttypically not oil, since oil canfurther aggravate abreak-out.Combination skinoften needsmoisture with someoil for balance. Thedry skin type needs extraoil with the moisture to soothe thedryness.

In today’s world, one should also look

at what is in a product. Someingredients simply should not be used.Natural preservatives keep a productfresh with some added shelf life, butcertain preservative types are bestavoided. Look for paraben-free products.Parabens may cause skin irritation, contact dermatitis and rosacea in someindividuals.

Ask a skin care professional to helpyou determine your skin type and the

best products to use. Professionalgrade products are best to achievelong lasting beautiful results.

Beautiful Skin Begins with ExceptionalSkin Care

Mary Barghelame

H ow have people cared for theirskin in the past? In early times, beautification may have been

considered secondary to survival. Earlyhunters painted their skin to blend intothe environment to seek food. Laterduring the height of the Egyptianculture, cleanliness became veryimportant, as did beautification, especially for religious ceremonies andpreparing the dead for burial. Henna, areddish dye, was used in the hair, forbody art and on fingernails. Thenomadic Hebrews used olive and grapeseed oils to moisten and protect theskin. An ointment made from hyssopwas used for cleansing. Myrrh andpomegranate were useful in grooming aswell. The early Greeks frequently bathedin olive oil and then dusted the bodywith sand for protection from the sun.Remember the ancient Roman baths? These were public buildings withseparate areas for men and women,

Ten Steps to Becoming an Ethical, ConsciousConsumer1. Research. For starters, look into where

the products come from, and then digdeeper into what that industry may bedoing behind the scenes.

2. Look for the labels. Ifsomething is fairtrade, organic, locally sourced, etc., it will almostalways have somekind of label orsticker.

3. Wants vs. needs. A bigpart of being an ethical consumer isrecognizing the difference between wantsand needs.

4. Buy for quality. Purchase products thatwill last.

5. Shop local. Support local farms, buy inseason, and shop at local businesses.

6. Recycle and pay attention to packaging.Recycle whatever you can, compost whatyou can, and avoid buying products witha ton of packaging.

7. What is it made of? If it is not fairlytraded, look for materials that areorganically made. Also, look for materialsthat aren’t made from animal products.

8. Does it give back? A lot of products arenow buy one give one. These companieslike the TOMS Shoes One for OneMovement donate one product to thosein need for every one product you buy. Many people have different views on thesustainability of these programs andorganizations, but they are worthconsidering, especially those that aremoving towards full sustainability.

9. Hold companies accountable. Everytime you purchase something, you arecasting your vote for what you want tosee in the market. Hold your favoritecompanies accountable for where theyget their raw materials.

10. Take it day by day. In striving to be anethical, conscious consumer, every effortcounts, big or small. Strive for your besteach day.

Reiki Healing Massage TherapistsAnd Much More!!

Page 13: Bellaspark magazine jan feb 2016

A s a massage therapist I like to use sticks and stones towarm your achy bones. You can visit a spa that offersunique massage experiences that bring warmth and

relaxation to the body, mind and soul and experiment withthose ideas at home. You may be familiar with the standard hotstones massage, but why not enjoy the benefits of Himalayansalt stones? When Himalayan salt stones are warmed theyrelease negative ions that create a calming atmosphere, whichis why they make such great lamps and candle holders. Salt byits own nature destroys bacteria, which is why it’s used as apreservative. You can use Himalayan salt stones in a warmshower or bath to detox and exfoliate the skin. The warmth andtrace minerals in the Himalayan salt stones are absorbed intothe skin to ease muscle aches and pain.

Another alternative is Mu-Xing or warm bamboo sticks. There are a few different shapes and sizes of bamboo sticksthat can be used warm or cold to flush the muscles out andincrease circulation and promote relaxation. Rosewood toolsare also used to refine the massage and hit the pressure points

to release trigger points. For those of you whofight pain with pain these

tools can deliverexquisite pain(the hurt-so-good kind ofpain).Essential

oils can bediffused by

warming them orthey can be added

to any of these therapies for your benefit. A knowledgeablearomatherapist can create a blend just for you or suggest one ofthe many blends already created for your health need or yourmassage. Not all essential oils are food grade, but some are andcan be added to any tea or recipe. I like to put a few drops oflemon or peppermint oil in my hot tea and breathe in thearoma.

There are other forms of warm massage therapies that willhelp keep the chill out and warm the bones this winter, such ashot Thai coconut or herbal balls. Think of the herbal balls ashealing compresses that help relieve pain, and the coconut ballshelp nourish and restore the skin’s moisture. A simple herbalcompress that you can make at home is to put a couplehandfuls of lavender flowers on some cheese cloth or othernatural material, tie it up and steam it. Use it on achy musclesor add to your bath like a tea bag. Either way you will enjoy thearomatherapy. If you’re treating yourself or visiting yourfavorite massage therapist you may feel a little euphoric afteryour spa treatment, so give yourself some time to reflect andtune in to your body.

2016

O ur subconscious is designedto help us achieve whateverwe focus our attention on. To

accomplish the goal “I want to loseten pounds,” you have to be alwayswanting to lose and never achieving.A better way to state your desiredoutcome is to say with gratitude: “Iam so grateful I have a physically fit, trim, toned and energetic body thatis pain-free and easily able to go onwalks with my family and friends. We have so much fun together!”With a goal like this, yoursubconscious and your intuition are

going to show up more often, and inmore obvious ways, to point youtoward steps you can take to makethose statements true.

Our words are powerful tools thathelp us to receive whatever wedescribe. Unfortunately, we oftengive voice to what we don’t wantinstead of what we do, and thenwe’re surprised and disappointedwith the results. For example, I knowa saleswoman who often says thingslike, “I really hope that I’m not latefor my appointment with ABCCompany on Tuesday. They are a

Our words arepowerful toolsthat help us toreceivewhatever wedescribe.

Resolutions ThatReap Rewards!

May McCarthy

Every New Year, the topic ofresolutions comes up. People arefired up and optimistic aboutachieving their goals. My friendspowerfully proclaim, “I want tolose ten pounds” or “I want to getout of debt.” One friend said, “Ihope that this year Uncle Bob isn’ta pain in everyone’s neck at thefamily reunion.” One thing thatthese resolutions or goals have incommon is that they’re going toproduce more of what these peopledon’t want in their lives.

Page 15: Bellaspark magazine jan feb 2016

huge potential customer and I don’twant them to buy from mycompetitor.”

Do you see anything problematicin these statements? Perhaps not, since many of us have learned tospeak like this. We talk about whatwe don’t want as a normal part of ourspeech. In this example, thesaleswoman is most likely going to belate for her appointment with ABCCompany since that’s what she’sfocused on, and she may lose the saleto one of her competitors. Hersubconscious recognizes that she’sfocused on being late and hercustomer buying from a competitor.Accordingly, she may act in a waythat makes those statements true.

To enable her subconscious andintuition to help her, a morepowerful statement would be, “I amso grateful to be on time and earlyfor my appointments. I’m going toarrive at ABC Company 15 minutesearly for my meeting, and I’mexcited for the opportunity to sellour products and have my customerreceive great value in return.” Inresponse, her subconscious andintuition will show up in a moreobvious way to help make thosestatements true. She might get astrong, unexpected thought tocheck the traffic report before shedecides on a route to theappointment and avoid a terribleaccident and backup. She may feelan intuitive nudge to get readysooner than she normally does sothat she can leave earlier. She mightreceive an email or phone call thatgives her insight into hercustomer’s needs so that herpresentation can be designed to bemore valuable.

We can choose to use our wordsto achieve more of our goals in 2016.To do this, follow the three simplesteps below:

1. Rewrite your goals daily withgratitude as though you’vealready achieved them.

Describe the outcome that youwant to experience and begrateful in advance for theachievement. For example, “I amso grateful that I am living in abeautiful new home that allowsmy family and me to feelcomfortable, safe and happy,” or“I’m delighted to receive aminimum of $____ that easilyaffords all of my living, giving andentertainment expenses. I use mytalents and skills in fulfilling andsatisfying ways.” Rewrite yourgoals daily to keep them at theforefront of your thoughts and

2. Read your goal statements outloud with emotion.

The practice of reading your goalstatements out loud anchors themeaning more fully within you. This tells your brain you’reserious so you can begin to noticemore opportunities to take stepstoward achieving your goals.Muhammad Ali, one of theworld’s greatest boxers, said, “It’sthe repetition of affirmationsthat leads to belief. As you create a clearpicture of your realizedgoals in your mind, youare creating newbeliefs to make thosegoals manifest. Visualizingthe successful completion of agoal is a powerful method thatmany professional athletes, musicians and businesspeople usedaily as part of their preparationand training for success. Four-time Mr. Universe andseven-time Mr. Olympia ArnoldSchwarzenegger has not onlyused mental imaging for athleticsuccess but also credits it for hissuccess as a Hollywood actor:“When I was very young Ivisualized myself being andhaving what it was I wanted.Mentally I never had any doubtsabout it.” Well-known authorRobert Collier puts it this way.“Visualize this thing that youwant, see it, feel it, believe in it.Make your mental blueprint, andbegin to build.” As you begin tosee and feel yourself in yourrealized goals, you’ll welcomeyour achieved goals sooner.

Set aside 20 minutes everymorning to repeat the stepsdescribed above. The key is to spendmore time focusing on what youwant to achieve rather than on whatyou don’t want or what others say

“Amorphous constructs, suchas ideologies, philosophies, religion and politics, are

labels we as a people have created,”stated Messinger, a world-renownedbusiness leader turned inspirationalspeaker and author. “When theseviews are challenged, resistance andanger are experienced, which canlead to violence, terrorism and war.Our confusion becomes a source ofsuffering. When your soul wants togo left but the world is pushing andpulling you to go right, it rips us inhalf. There is a battle between thehead and the heart and the materialworld.”

During a telephone conversation,Messinger shared deep insights lacedwith an earnest desire to promotewellness within the world. His

approach is a combination ofintelligent common sense andcomplex philosophy, all hard-earned.

Messinger’s bio reads like therésumé of a Type A superhero.

He is one of 37 distinguishedgraduates from Annapolis’s class of1981, a former fireman and a nuclearsubmarine officer who served onthree submarines during the ColdWar. In the corporate world hebecame an executive with Exxon, acrisis leader for the Valdez oil spill, and finally CEO of Ernst and YoungConsulting (Singapore).

In early 2000, he broke his neckand almost died. Althoughunfortunate, the circumstances hefaced became a catalyst for him toreevaluate his life.

Once recuperated, he retired from

His approach isa combinationof intelligentcommon senseand complexphilosophy, allhard-earned.

J.D. Messinger offers a messageof enlightenment which comesacross like warm, mellowcandlelight on a frigid winter’snight. Born of a medical crisis, his spiritual self took root longafter he’d experienced adistinguished and lucrativecareer in the corporate world.

A Message from J.D.Messinger

the corporate world and shifted focusto promoting human potential.Messinger founded EssenceEnterprises, where he trained 50,000members of the Singapore Ministryof Defense in crisis response after911 and SARS.

As if that weren’t enough, hecreated, produced and hosted a socialentrepreneur television show, followed by the CNN radio programGlobal Evolution, aired in over 100countries.

Not ready to rest on his laurels,Messinger wrote his first book inMay 2012. The tome, 11 Days in May— The Conversation That Will ChangeYour Life, was so named because ofthe time it took to formulate fromthe preface to last page. Ananthology of 36 parables of a manattempting to discover life’s greatermeaning, the book went on to winfive awards as well as hitting #1 onAmazon’s science and religion, spirituality, self-help and personaldevelopment categories. It followsone man’s quest to solve eternalquestions such as: Who am I? Why amI here? and, Where did I come from?

“Providing a framework to discardconventional wisdom,” saidMessinger, “my book guides eachreader to explore their beliefs andfears and find their own truth.Although it is a conversation fromme to my higher self, the book wroteitself — a channeled writing. I referto it as Writing on the Wall, orWOW. It includes information thatwas absolutely not mine and a lot ofthings in there are a littlefrightening. The parables ask bigquestions and there is no way I couldhave invented or created it.”

Much of Messinger’s materialmirrors historical concepts of ancientreligion and spirituality. Heacknowledges belief in God, but hadno previous scholarly awareness ofmany of these ethical ideals.

Some of the points Messingerhighlights are: the majority of peopleare struggling to survive in adeteriorating economy, unsure howto vote, whom to trust and what tobelieve.

He attempts to shatter illusionsby offering several revelations.

• Everyone must choose betweenwho and what they love more.

• There is a science called religionand a religion called science.

• Nothing is not-good.• Matter is not solid.

“When you change what youbelieve, you change what you see.Find your light, which is your power,”added Messinger.

One of his basic tenants is thatwhat binds us is far greater thanwhat divides. ThisBinding Force iseverywhere andeverything and it isthe most powerfulforce in theuniverse.

Within thisBinding Force weare pure energy, photons andeternal spirits;everything isinterconnectedas well asinterdependent; wehave invisible gifts to hear, see, feeland know, to create wonders forourselves and the greater good.

If life itself were a marathon,Messinger would be at the head ofthe race. Striving and reaching fullpotential time after time has givenhim insights from both the judiciousleft brain and a creative spiritualismfrom the right. Yet he is not just thesum of his many accomplishments, but a bright light of wit and wisdom.

“I believe it has become my callingto bring the essence of this news to

the world,” said Messinger. “I camefrom a very pragmatic background soI attempt to integrate fact withspirituality in a way that reachesboth practical business types as wellas those who are moretranscendent.”

The two aren’t necessarilymutually exclusive. Messinger sharesstories of people who latch onto hislessons simply because his personalexperiences have made it okay to doso, whereas it might have seemedotherwise inaccessible to them.

An excerpt from Messinger’s bookexplains how a proposedtransformation in the collectiveconsciousness of humanity is takingplace:

“We the people find ourselves at aonce-in-a-lifetime tipping point, adramatic awakening. A shift is

occurring forhumanity, and it isdivinely ordained. Itis a time when thepeople must uniteand speak out so thatall sides understandwe must leave behindselfish desires fromthe World of Form.”

“From the Creator’spoint of view, neverbefore in the history ofhumanity have so manyneeded so much, or sofew controlled so many.

The lovely corollary is this: Neverbefore have so many known so muchor been so enlightened.”

Finding Your Animal Ally

Denise Linn

Page 21: Bellaspark magazine jan feb 2016

www.BellaSparkMagazine.com • January/February 2016 • BellaSpark 19

The following is an excerpt from Kindling the Native Spirit by Denise Linn. It is published by Hay House (November 2015) and is available

in bookstores and online at www.hayhouse.com

In many native traditions, findingone’s animal ally often involved avision quest in nature. However,

as we don’t always have theopportunity to go on a quest, thereare a number of other ways that youcan find your spirit animal:

Think about what animal you aredrawn to: You may find your poweranimal by noticing the animals towhich you feel irresistibly drawn. It

could be your favorite animal sincechildhood. Perhaps you’ve lovedstories about cats and have alwaysfelt aligned with them — this mightindicate that some kind of cat isyour ally.

Watch your dreams: A totem mayalso appear repeatedly in a dream. Before you go to sleep, ask that yourspirit animal appear in your dreams.Consider keeping a journal next toyour bed so that you can record yourdreams as soon as you awake.

Pay attention to the signs: Ask theCreator to give you a sign in regard toyour totem. If an animal appears anumber of times, especially inunusual ways, this most likely is oneof your allies. For example, youreceive a card with a horse on it inthe mail. Then you begin seeinghorses on posters and billboards. There’s a song playing on the radioabout a horse, as you’re driving by afield full of horses. If everywhere youturn, you see horses, there’s a goodchance that the horse is your totem.

Take the inward journey: One ofthe most powerful ways to find yourspirit animal is to go on an innerjourney (meditation). Imagineyourself in a mist, and pictureyourself reaching into the mist to

touch your spirit animal. Imagine themist thinning and “see” what animalhas appeared. You can evencommunicate with the animal tounderstand why it has come forwardas your totem.

Spend time in nature: Thetraditional way to discover yourtotem is to spend time in solitude innature and then notice the animalsthat show up. You can also watch the

images in the clouds and even in thepatterns on the bark on the trees toget clues as to your totem.

Discovering the Qualities of Your Animal Ally

Different cultures assign varyingmeanings to totems. Trust yourintuition to find the significance ofyours. There are many books that listpower animals and what theyrepresent. Although these can bevery useful, it’s important toremember that this is only oneperson’s or one culture’sinterpretation. Read the definition ofyour animal ally in the book and seeif it feels right to you. Your ownsense of what a particular spiritanimal means is unique and is morevalid than anyone else’s opinion.

The owl is a good example of thesevarying definitions. When I was inWestern Australia discussing totemswith Aboriginal elders, I was toldthat men feared the owl, for it was awoman’s totem and represented thedarkness and the unknown. Theysaid that as men were afraid ofthe power of women, theyalso feared the owl. In NewZealand, I discussed animalallies with members of the Maori

tribe and asked about the owl. I wastold that it was a sacred bird to theMaoris. It was so sacred that its namewas never spoken. In my own NativeAmerican culture, some tribes reverethe owl, saying that it representsdeep wisdom, yet other tribesconsider it the harbinger of death anddarkness. The meaning for each allycan vary dramatically; therefore, it’scrucial that you find the meaning of yourally for yourself.

Another way to discover whatyour totem represents is to readwildlife books, nature magazinesand encyclopedias. Research thehabits and habitat of the animalswith which you feel a specialkinship. For example, if you feelthat the wolf is your ally, byresearching their habits in the wild, you’ll discover that they have astrong sense of family. Thus, havinga wolf for your ally may increaseyour connection to your family.

and sense of worth plummets. Authorand therapist John Bradshaw states thatwhen the inner child is left alone, unrecognized, unloved and thereforeunhealed a person will inevitablycontaminate his or her life as an adult. Many recurring emotional problems inadulthood, including bullying, substanceabuse and addiction, are an indicationthat the wounded inner child is stillscared and searching for comfort.

According to clinical psychologistGershen Kaufman, “Shame is the mostdestructive of human emotions.” Andyet it’s universal. Psychotherapist andauthor Beverly Engel agrees, and goesone step further by stating that shame isthe core issue of addiction and is oftenthe underlying cause of other seriousissues such as suicide and depression.

Shame is often confused with guilt;what is the difference? According toWebster’s Dictionary, shame is “acondition of humiliating disgrace ordisrepute.” Shame isa deep feeling ofpersonalunworthiness andinadequacy. It hasbeen described asthe distress peoplefeel when they failto live up to the expectations of others,or the remorse and/or humiliation theyfeel when they think they have donesomething inexcusable or have letothers down. On the other hand, guilt isfeeling badly about something we didwrong or neglected to do, for which ourconscience bothers us.

Are you still being controlled andkept in line with guilt and shame? If so,you have been a prisoner long enough. Itis time to break the pattern. Now thatconsciousness throughout the world isshifting, more and more people aredetermined to cast off the weight of

shame that has been passed fromgeneration to generation. Allow yourselfto be among them. Now is the time toreclaim your power and stop definingyourself by other people’s opinions. Didyou ever consider that those who judgedyou so harshly might be wrong? Did youever think that the issues used to shameyou might belong to your accusers andnot you? Isn’t it time to stop givingthese people free rent in your head?

How might you do this? Startthinking of shame as an old tatteredcoat that is worn out and needs to bediscarded. Stop re-hashing past events— let them go. Stop focusing onyourself and your perceivedinadequacies and start looking for waysyou can be of service to others. You canpay it forward or fill a need whereveryou see one. Always be kind. When youcan see the visible results of your effortsand feel good about what you are doingand how you are living, there is little

time or place for shame. Let 2016 be theyear you come into your own and allowyourself to be the person you wereintended to be.

How many times have you heardsomeone say, “Shame on you!” or,“You should be ashamed of

yourself”? Maybe you heard these wordsyourself when you were growing up. Forcountless years adults have used guiltand shame to control children and keepthem in line. Unfortunately this is stillhappening today and is being passed onto yet another generation. The effects, both then and now, are long-lasting anddestructive. Being shamed as a childoften creates a lifelong negative beliefthat one is a “bad” person, somehowflawed and not good enough. When webelieve this, the basic needs of our innerchild remains unmet. The result is achronic state of anxiety, fear, shame, anger, emotional isolation and despairthat can follow us into adulthood.

When the adults in our life can’t becounted on to provide love, support andsafety we may continue to growphysically but a part of our emotionalgrowth and development either slowsdown or is arrested. During childhood(and as adults too) we are easilywounded by constant shaming, criticism, judgment and rejection. In anattempt to protect ourselves from beinghurt again, we start squelching ournatural tendencies to be open, lovingand trusting. We build walls around ourvulnerable inner child. Our self-esteem

Entering the Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre transports theindividual into an inspiring

atmosphere of art and beauty.Magnificent sculptures, carvings, tiles, and windows all combine to lift the spiritand touch the soul. I wandered around, absorbed in the exquisite splendor of theplace. Then I sat in a back pew for thebeginning of the mass, which wasconducted in French and I didn’tunderstand a word, but I felt a part ofthe glorious energy of this sacred space.

I knew that this cathedral would bespecial when our guide told us of itsmiraculous beginning as our bustraveled through scenic countrysidealong the Saint Lawrence River inQuebec. She told us that we wereheading toward a treacherous part of theriver which had been the site ofdevastating ship wrecks during thecolonization of what was then NewFrance. In 1658, a ship was caught in asevere storm. The crew cried out toSainte Anne, the Saint of Sailors, to

come to their rescue. In their prayersthey promised that if they survived, theywould construct a church in her honor. They were thrown onto the shore andthey fulfilled their promise by building achurch where they landed. The originalbuilding, completed in 1676, has beenreplaced several times and is now thesite of a magnificent cathedral built ofcut stone.

Another miracle occurred with thebuilding of the present church. LouisGuimont, an inhabitant of Beaupre whosuffered from a debilitating form ofrheumatism, came forward and placedthree stones in the foundation of thenew building. He was suddenly andcompletely healed of his ailment. Sincethat time, thousands of diseased anddisabled people have traveled to theShrine of Sainte Anne. Many have addedtheir crutches, walking sticks andbandages to huge piles of similar itemsas they have walked away fully healed. Itis estimated that about a half-millionpilgrims visit this holy place every year.

Although little is known about thelife of Saint Anne, the Church hasrecognized and worshiped her forcenturies as the mother of Mary and thegrandmother of Jesus. The entire ceilingmosaic of the Basilica tells the story ofher life, depicting a Jewish woman livingin that era. It shows her as a woman ofmany virtues and illustrates herglorification. The life of Jesus isrepresented in beautiful stained glasswindows and carvings throughout thesanctuary. The lower chapel, paintedand decorated in shades of the colorblue, is devoted to Mary.

Dedicated and talented architectsand artists spent many years of theirlives creating this magnificent shrine. They filled it with symbols, metaphorsand history for all generations.

As a result, I have traveled to the jungles of Peru toapprentice with the Shipibo the past eight years;I’ve been initiated into the Shipibo plant medicine

diets, ceremonies and shamanic-based healing practices. Each experience has helped me restore balance and joyinto my life.

Shamanism

Shamanism is an ancient earth-based spiritual practice, experience and cosmology, drawing upon the energy andwisdom of Spirit that lives within the natural world.

Shamanism dates back as far as 25,000 years and isconsidered the first spiritual practice on earth. Basicpremises of shamanism are:

1. Everything is alive and has spirit, consciousness andawareness.

2. Energy and matter are the same. Everything isvibration. Everything has an energy system, and existswithin a greater energy system.

3. Everything is connected within a web of energy or life.

Nine years ago I stumbled across the shamanic path in search of healing after a shocking event in mylife. Though I had been on a deep spiritual, mystical path for over 20 years already, somethingdifferent was in need. My inner yearning led me to a four-day healing retreat in New Mexico withsome multi-cultural, shamanic teachers. Oh yes, did I say, I also met two Peruvian jungle shamansand was enamored enough to want more experiences with them. Unbeknownst to me, my entire lifewas about to take an incredible shift in course.

4. There is an unseen/inner/spiritual world that affectsthe seen world of ordinary reality.

The Shipibo People

The Shipibo are a shamanic artisanal people one of 14indigenous tribes living in the Amazon Basin of Peru. Theyhave a deep connection to the natural world and areparticularly known for their healing songs, or icaros; theirwoven song clothes (artwork expressing the visual form ofthe icaros); understanding and use of the plant medicinesin the jungles; and their famous soul healing brew ofAyahuasca.

They know that everything is energy. Life giving energyis known as Sami (like prana or chi). Sami exists in all ofnature and is what restores balance. Energy that createsillness and lack of harmony is man-made and is calledhucha. Fear responses, trauma, anger, jealousy, insecuritiesand fright are all examples of hucha. When it is stuck inyour energy field you become imbalanced and ultimatelyyour physical body becomes sick.

The Shipibo use sacred song, plant medicines and otherhealing processes, such as extraction work, to release the

hucha patterns, and then put in sami to restore balance.Personal responsibility and inner work is always requiredin healing.

Many westerners travel to the jungles of Peru today towork with the Shipibo to heal what are considered difficultto heal illnesses in our medical world. Challenges fromdepression, alcoholism and drug addiction to cancer sendpeople to the jungle to find answers and healing. It is theancient cultural and spiritual wisdom, plant medicines, shamanic healing practices and particularly the ayahuascatea that calls these travelers.

When one heeds the call, you can be assured a shifttowards balance is about to occur.

Have you been through one or more of these in the past? Ifso, maybe you feel an emotional heaviness in your chestas if your heart is breaking.

It can be a challenge to go through your day, feeling as if youcan’t open to love again, or follow your heart’s passion.

All of these situations can bring up challenging emotionsthat can deeply affect your heart. If this happens too manytimes, you can build an energetic “wall” around your heartprotecting you from further heartache or assault.

This “Heart Wall” was discovered by chiropractor Dr.Bradley Nelson and described in his book The Emotion Code. Inthis article, I’ll explain what a “Heart Wall” is and share withyou a few simple steps you can take so that your heart can startto heal and you can return to wholeness.

The “Heart Wall”If the heart has been hurt or wounded in some way,

especially if it happens repeatedly, the emotions that we feelcan literally become “trapped” around our heart forming a“Heart Wall”.

This “Heart Wall” can make you feel emotionally numb, youmay have a difficult time connecting to others or entering intoromantic relationships, and it can block your heart energy fromfreely flowing through your body. You may also notice physicalsymptoms as well — tightness in the chest, lowered immunity, difficulty breathing or neck and shoulder tension.

When the “Heart Wall” is released, people will say it’s as ifthey can finally feel again. They are able to receive love theyhaven’t been able to in a long time. The physical symptomsmentioned above may also start to improve.

Removing the Heart Wall Brick by Brick“Until the Heart Wall is taken down, you’ll be trapped behind it

to some degree, less able to reach out and connect to other people, even the people you love the most.”

~ Dr. Bradley Nelson, author of The Emotion Code

So, how do you remove the trapped emotions surrounding

your heart so that you can let go of emotional pain? Here are afew techniques that have helped me as well as clients I haveworked with.

Self-Acupressure — Acupressure is the application of fingerpressure on certain areas of the body to help release energeticblockages. You can read more about specific acupressure pointsin my Bella Spark article, Emotions Spinning Out of Control?Acupressure Can Help in the May/June 2015 issue.

Access your Internal Resources — A resource is anythingthat helps us feel safe or at ease. When going throughemotional challenges it’s important to reconnect with theseinternal resources as they often become overwhelmed.

Bring your attention to an area of your body that feelscomfortable to be with. It could be your hand, a finger or a toe.How does your body tell you that area feels? Is it comfortable?Does it feel warm or relaxed? Stay with that sensation for 5minutes.

Next, move your attention to your heart just for a secondand notice how it feels. Then, bring your attention down to thearea that feels comfortable. Moving your attention back andforth several times between your heart and the comfortablearea helps your body release blocked emotional energy in theheart.

Find professional help — Counselors, psychotherapists, somatic bodyworkers or a Certified Emotion Code Practitionercan help you release the trapped emotional energy that youmay be carrying around your heart.

A “Heart Wall” can stop you from living a happy, joyful life. The importance of clearing the “Heart Wall” cannot beoverestimated. In doing so, you will be able to move forward, heal from loss or past relationships and live your life to thefullest!

Perhaps what we are really waiting foris the ability to master our ownauthentic power. Maybe the new

paradigm represents a legion of mastersarising out of our collective story. Andperhaps, just perhaps, one of them is you.

It is a timeless story, really. Thoselegends who have mastered thisparadigm have become part of our ownhuman story on Earth. Could it be thatthe same potential exists within you? Allsigns say “Yes.” Jesus even said, “Youcan do everything I have done, andmore.”

This new idea of power involves partinspiration and part purity. This newarena of thought also includes quantumphysics and sacred geometry. Indeed, these are vehicles of power expressed. However, there is one more componentneeded in order for each of us toembody the master experience. And thatis to embody our own Divine Power.

Power flows best when balanced andpure. The first step in manifestationbegins in the feminine, as the answer toour intent or prayer. The pure energy ofthe solution is then presented.

The masculine then comes into playto bring the manifestation into form. Apure masculine persona can take theenergetic imprint from the feminine andcreate the physical manifestation of it.When you blend the sacred geometry ofthe feminine with the quantum field of

the masculine both of these attributestogether make the whole process muchmore succinct.

Let’s get back to our story of aMaster being born. If we look at history,no masters waved their wands totransform whole cities into some sort ofglowing utopia. For example, Gandhi didnot repel the British in a single moment. There wasn’t one single event thatenlightened the world, rather a series ofactions over time that createdchange.

When we look at yourstory of becoming apowerful person, it willshow up best in the wakethat you leave. Theauthentic power in you istireless andindestructible. It existsat your very core, awaiting your desireto understand it andmaster it.

It is your verypurity that will ramp up thepower level in which you are able toproceed in your life. And this is wherethe unresolved energy within your ownpersonal energy persona comes intoplay. Like film that has been partiallyexposed, you cannot capture the purityof your divine inspiration unless yourown personal energy is pure. That is the

doorway to living the “master’s tale.”Begin with your heart. Purify it byunconditionally loving every facet ofhumanity.

Blessed are the pure in heart for theyshall know God (creation). Understandthat the infinite potential that allowedthe villain to create torment and fury isthe exact same potential you have usedto create the life that you have rightnow. To the universe, the two of you areidentical, so accept your role in this big

picture of our human story now. Trustin your ability to leverage

the universe on morepowerful levels. There is

no end to the power youwill regain as you purify

and cleanse your ownheart’s ability to love. The

infinite nature of Divine Loveis always within you seeking a

portal of expression in you, through you, as you.

It’s time to awaken theMaster in You!

The movies have shown us countless times a hero representing “good”sparring in an epic battle with some villain looking to trash humanity. This longstanding mythology also implies that there is a hidden power withinhistory’s Great Masters, affording them the ability to ward off any evil-doers.Yet here we are today, waiting for the hero to make a grand appearance.

Many of these come frompast years, because I believe they areworth repeating. This year, let’s turnthese intentions into conscious, ongoing, lifetime practices:

5. I will reduce my at-home water usage byseeking out ways to conserve water. Iwill search out websites such aswww.wateruseitwisely.com andorganizations that offer suggestions forconscious actions.

6. I will use a BPA-free plastic container ora reusable stainless steel water bottlethat has a BPA-free liner. I will buy abottle from a local store or vendor oronline via companies such aswww.kleankanteen.com.

7. I will stop using disposable plastic bagsat the grocery store AND at departmentstores. I will keep bags available in my

Winter has never been my thing. I’m a man who feelsmost comfortable wearing only a sarong, a pair ofsandals, and sunglasses. Yet somehow I ended up living

on the side of a mountain in Colorado, which is a tale too longfor this page. I’ve since acquired the close friendship of aroaring fire, a hot tub and a hearty meal. Fortunately, a deeplywarming and satisfying dish is surprisingly easy to make whenyou set your mind to it. Give me a bowl of steaming spaghetti, and I’m one contented paesan.

Speaking of spaghetti, a few years ago I discovered brownrice pasta, which is a boon to lovers of Italian food who wish toavoid wheat products. My wife is such a person. It’s the onlyalternative pasta I’ve encountered that holds its shape, cooksup al dente, and has a reasonably agreeable taste. Let’s not foolourselves; despite its name, this is not exactly a whole grain, but it does satisfy my requirements adequately, and a wisewarrior doesn’t take on too many challenges at once.

My wife is an amazing gardener, and she manages to supplyme with fresh herbs well into the winter, from pots shepositions near east-facing windows. This is about more thanjust keeping the cook happy. Fresh herbs are incomparable foradding a bright flavor note, and in the freezing months they’remarvelous ambassadors of summer. Their color alone iswarming.

Penne All’arabbiata

Makes 4 servings

The basil here is heresy. True Penne All’arabbiata is madewith parsley, if anything at all. However, I made it once thisway for my son, and it was so slurping good, I’ve done so eversince. “All’arabbiata” means “rabid style,” referring to thesearing heat imparted by the chiles, so be prepared. Chiles areanti-inflammatory, and good for your immune system. Theyalso have the potential of lifting you into an endorphin-inducedstupor, which is always fun.

3 1/2 teaspoons sea salt6 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil7 cloves garlic, thinly sliced

4 dried red chiles, or 2 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes4 cups crushed peeled and seeded tomatoes, with juice1/2 cup packed basil leaves, coarsely choppedFreshly ground black pepper, to taste 1 pound brown rice penne

Place a large pot of water over high heat and add 3teaspoons of the salt. While the water is coming to a boil, prepare the sauce.

Put 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) of the oil, the garlic, and thechiles in a large, heavy pot over medium-high heat. Shake thepot back and forth to keep the garlic and chiles moving. Assoon as the garlic has turned a light tan color, add the tomatoesand remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt. Cook, stirring often, until theliquid has reduced to a light, pulpy sauce. This should take nomore than 10 minutes; the sauce should have a very freshtomato flavor. Remove from the heat and stir in the basil and alittle of the pepper. Taste and adjust the seasoning, as needed.

When the water is boiling, add the pasta and stir well toprevent sticking. Cook until the pasta is just tender, but stillfirm to the bite, about 7 minutes. Immediately drain, reservinga little of the cooking liquid, and return to the pot. Stir in theremaining 2 tablespoons olive oil, shaking the pot to coat thepasta well. Add the sauce and heat through, shaking the pan tocombine thoroughly. If the sauce is too thick, stir in a splash ofthe reserved cooking liquid.

Serve at once.

I think that winter vegetables get a badrap. They are eaten more out ofnecessity than desire because our

selection severely dwindles as thetemperatures drop. Spring, summer andearly fall bring a large selection of bright, colorful and fresh tasting fruits andvegetables. They are vibrant and deliciousbut temporary. Winter vegetables, on theother hand, are earthy, resilient andearthen colored. They are mostly rootsand thick skinned squash, but theirflavors are deeper, bolder and morecomplex. It is these qualities that I believemake them exciting.

Unfortunately, most of the recipesthat include winter vegetables aresoups, stews or salads. People rarelymake them the star of the show, butrather use them as accoutrements tobring out their earthy, aromaticqualities. Because they are also heartier, they can stand up to the longer cookingtimes. I wanted to showcase the flavorof winter vegetables and make them thestar of a dish, allowing their individualflavors to come through.

In this Winter Vegetable Tart I usethe sweetness of carrots with thespiciness of turnips to balance eachother, but still let the individual flavorsof each truly pop. I also didn’t wantthem to be cooked into mush; I wantedto retain some of the crunchy texture ofvegetables. I think that this recipe showsthe versatility of winter vegetables. Thebest part is that you can replace any ofthe ingredients with yourfavorite winter vegetable.

Winter Vegetable Tart1 sheet puff pastry, thawed½ bunch kale, chopped2 leeks, cut in half lengthwise

and sliced into half moons3–4 carrots, peeled and thinly sliced*3–4 turnips, peeled and thinly sliced*3 tablespoons fresh sage, finely chopped2 tablespoons fresh rosemary, finely

chopped2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves, finely

chopped4 tablespoons olive oil1 egg½ cup balsamic vinegar

*Tip: Use a mandolin or the slicingattachment on a food processor to get anice thin cut on carrots and turnips.

Line a large baking sheet withparchment paper and preheat oven to400 degrees.

Prep Tart Crust: On a lightly flouredsurface, carefully roll out the Puff Pastryto about 12” x 9”. Cut a 1 inchrectangular strip of pastry from eachside of the pastry so you are left with an11” x 8” sheet and set aside. Crack theegg into a small bowl, add about 2teaspoons of water and whisk. Brush theegg wash around each side. Place the cutstrips of pastry around the edge over theegg wash which will act as a glue. Placeprepared tart crust on sheet pan withparchment and set aside.

Prep Vegetables: Heat 1 tablespoonof olive oil in a pan over medium heat.Add leaks and sage and cook untilbeginning to soften, about 4 minutes.Add another tablespoon of olive oil, kalesalt and pepper. Cook until kale iswilted, about 4 more minutes. Removefrom pan and set aside to cool.

Place carrots and turnips in 2separate medium bowls. To each bowl

add 1 tablespoon olive oil, 1 tablespoonsage, 1 tablespoon rosemary, 1tablespoon of thyme and salt andpepper. Toss each to coat.

Make Balsamic Reduction: HeatBalsamic vinegar in a small sauce pan overmedium high heat until it has reduced byabout two thirds, stirring occasionally. Setaside and let cook and thicken.

Assemble and Bake Tart: Once leekand kale mixture is cooled, place directlyonto tart making sure to keep it off thedouble layer strip on the edge. Layer theleek and kale mixture on top of thevegetables in any pattern you want.Brush the edges of pastry withremaining egg wash. Place tart in ovenand bake until vegetables are cooked justsoft and crust is puffed up and goldenbrown, about 30-40 minutes. Once out, drizzle Balsamic Reduction over the topof the tart. Cut into pieces and servewarm or room temperature.

The Forgotten Keyto Letting Go

Blake D. Bauer

It is never easy to let go of someone you love. Changeis often harder than we want to admit. Whether it'sdeath, divorce or another form of separation, trying tomove on brings grief and sadness for the joy andconnection that's passed, or for the unresolved hurtand misunderstanding we've felt. But we would not beon the edge of release if it were not meant to be forour highest good.

underlying fears and insecuritiesmust be healed for us to truly behealthy, happy and free.

In my personal life as well as myprofessional work with thousands ofpeople, I have found that there is onlyone effective approach to letting go.This often forgotten key entailsbecoming clear about what we actuallywant in life now, expressing it to theUniverse or God, and moving toward itwhile focusing our time and energy onwhat makes us feel good, alive and welleach day. We have to train ourselves tochoose activities and relationships

where we can fully be ourselves, asopposed to ones where we feelcompromised or obliged to please.

As you become more accustomedto focusing on things that make youfeel good daily you will naturallymove away from anyone or anythingthat is not healthy for you, withoutfeeling guilty. Those people who aremeant to be with you on yourdestined path will organically comewith you, while those who limit you,do not meet you, or do not value you, will naturally be left behind. Through

Sometimes we outgrow a relationship.Sometimes a person outgrows us.

So here you are, playing theGame of Life, attendingEarth School, just as you

have lifetime after lifetime.Always growing and expanding asyou move from kindergarten tograde school to high school andcollege. Earth is a fascinatingplace. You are faced with duality –dark and light, good and bad, upand down. And the most difficultaspect of all, you forget who youare and where you came from.

You incarnate on this planet, time and time again that you maylearn and experience all thisschool has to offer (the good, thebad and the ugly) as you evolve yoursoul. And the one final lesson, to WakeUP, to remember who you are – a DivineSpark of God. To find your way out ofthe darkness into the light. To find yourway home.

Now is the time. Never before haveso many souls clamored to come here. And here you are – old soul that you are– on the final leg of the journey – wakingup to the realization that you are morethan a body that lives and dies – that

them. Soul after soul, whetherconsciously knowing it or not, said yes. “We can and will do this.We will shift and transmute theenergies of this planet. We willcreate the new earth.”

Each person comes into thisworld with a specific destiny —has something to fulfill, somemessage to be delivered, somework to be completed. You arenot here accidentally — you arehere meaningfully. There is apurpose behind you. The wholeintends to do something throughyou.

Yes, you are the co-creators ofthe New Earth. Hold the vision of akinder, gentler world always. Not onlyenvision the peace you wish to see in theworld, but live it, be it, every moment ofevery day. Each time you become morewhole and more loving, you helphumanity as a whole and raiseconsciousness across the planet. Do notunderestimate the power of this.

Today may you remember who youare and walk in your essence of God.

you are a magnificent aspect ofGod/Spirit itself.

This is a most auspicious time. Fornever before have human beings madesuch gigantic leaps forward. Neverbefore has the planet shifted itsvibration in such a big way. The entireUniverse has been watching you as youhave released and cleared andtransmuted life-times of old patterns, beliefs and karma. Many thought itcould not be done, but you showed

Creating a New EarthDonna Visocky

You have been here before, a part of the circle of life on this planet earth for eons and eons. You are the players, the game changers, the creators. You have seen and experienced much, yet you still return, for there is nowhere else in the Universe such as this. Some may call it agame, and that it true. Others call it Earth School — also true. It is but one of manyopportunities for a soul to grow and evolve. There are rules to this game, instructions for thisschool, in this particular time-space continuum, that are different from those of others. Justas earth games such as Monopoly or Trivia Pursuit have their own set of rules such is true forthe Game of Life on Earth. You came here for the excitement, the thrill, the adventure andthe pure joy of physicality.
