Euphrates River to Be Dried Up üIn revelatIon 16:12, the bIble predIcts that the euphrates rIver wIll be drIed up to prepare the way for the kings of the East to invade Israel. This will happen at the time of the battle of Armageddon according to verse 16 of the same chapter. The battle of Armageddon will be the final battle at which time Jesus will return and fight on the side of the nation of Israel. Immediately thereafter He will establish his kingdom and usher in His one-thousand year reign of peace. On January 13, 1990, the Indianapolis Star carried the headline “Turkey Will Cut Off Flow of Euphrates for One Month.” The article stated that a huge reservoir had been built by Turkey. While filling up the reservoir, the flow of the Euphrates would be stopped for one month and a concrete plug for a diversion channel built. These things have now been done. With this newly built dam, Turkey has the ability to stop the Euphrates River at will. The conditions for fulfilling this 1,900 year-old prophecy are now in place.

China Goes to War üIn revelatIon 9:15-16, the bIble prophesIes that an army of 200 mIllIon soldIers wIll launch a war which will kill “the third part of men.” Never in the history of the world until our present generation has there been a power on earth that could field 200 million soldiers. However, the late ruler of China Mao Tse Tung boasted in his diary that he could field an army of 200 million. The CIA World Factbook reported that, in the year 2001, it was estimated that China had 200,866,946 men of military age and that this number is growing by 10 million per year.

Worldwide Numbering System Predicted üIn revelatIon 13, the bIble prophesIes that a world dIctator wIll soon rule over a world government. He will cause all people on the earth to receive a number without which they will be unable to buy or sell. We are seeing this prophecy fulfilled before our eyes in a most astonishing way. Nearly every human being in the world has now been assigned a number. In America, it is our Social Security number. In the past few years, we have seen this number extended to newborns. A child without a Social Security number cannot be declared as a dependent on an income tax return. We have seen the emergence of electronic money, shopping with credit cards, and many people actually urging the abolition of cash. All of these things could not possibly have been fulfilled until this present time. Only after the invention of the computer could such a worldwide numbering system be administered.

The Emergence of a New World Order ürevelatIon 13:7 and danIel 7:23 prophesy the establIshment of a world government. The term “New World Order” has become a prevalent phrase in the world’s political culture. Mikhail Gorbachev made the term famous, and Pope John Paul II referred to it repeatedly. In the September 12, 1990 issue of the Chicago Tribune, our former president George Bush said, “Iraq is the first test for the New World Order.” He emphatically stated that the Iraq War was Saddam Hussein against the world. The United Nations’ troops are continually referred to as the multi-national forces. The decision has been made to establish an interdependent community of nations that will rule the world under United Nations authority. The Bible says that this will lead us into a great world government. The formation of this government is at hand.

Coincidence or Divine Providence? üIs It coIncIdental that all of these major prophecies pertaining to the last times are being fulfilled simultaneously? Hardly!

It’s not yet time for the Battle of Ar-mageddon, but we can already see events being lined up for the world’s final war.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the president of Iran, recently called for wiping Israel off the face of the earth. While con-demning this call, Cardinal Carl Lehm-ann of Germany referred to Iran by its ancient name of Persia. This served as a startling reminder that the Bible refers to Iran as Persia in the endtime prophecy found in Ezekiel 38.

While Ahmadinejad calls for Israel’s annihilation, Russia is selling Iran missiles that make execution of the threat possi-ble. No wonder Ezekiel 38 says that Rus-sia and Persia will be in alliance against Israel at the Battle of Armageddon.

As though to add fuel to the anti-Is-raeli fire, a Ukrainian university known as MAUP has called upon the United Nations to “close Israel.” The leadership of MAUP, one of Ukraine’s most pres-tigious universities, said, “Mankind lived without the State of Israel exactly 2,670 years, but after the second of its creation all the world feels a constant aggression of the old ‘sons of the devil.’”

Besides calling for the annihilation of Israel, Iran has moved forward with its plan to enrich uranium. This advance would provide the fuel needed for the

production of electricity, but would also place in Iran’s hands the materials required for the production of nuclear bombs.

As you may imagine, Israel is not too comfortable with a nation possessing nuclear weapons that has publicly called for her destruction. The British Sunday Times reported that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has ordered the IDF to prepare to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities at the end of March 2006. This was apparently triggered by Israel’s intelligence forces supposedly discovering a number of se-cret uranium enrichment sites that were disguised as civilian buildings.

Iran’s top nuclear official, Gholamreza Aghazadeh, said his country will enrich uranium and produce nuclear fuel in Iran despite the international drive to curb such efforts. Israel has stated that she cannot possibly tolerate a nuclear- equipped Iran.

UN nuclear watchdog chief Mohamed ElBaradei has called on the United States to state explicitly that it has no plans to launch a military strike against Iran. The United States declined to do so stating that the U.S. believes Iran will not back down from its nuclear ambitions even if placed under UN sanctions.

No, it’s not time for Armageddon yet… but it’s not that far off either! ¨

REVEALING THE FUTURE THROUGH BIBLE PROPHECY

 PERSPECTIVE

sTaTEmENT oF FaITH We believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God, that Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world, and that He will come again to establish a kingdom that shall never be destroyed (Daniel 2:44). Those who are born again (John 3:3–5) will have eternal life and rule as kings and priests with Christ forever.

wHaT Is endtime? In 1968, Irvin Baxter Jr. discovered the United States and other modern nations in the Bible. He also found the Berlin Wall in the Bible and that one day it was to be torn down, re-uniting Germany, and that event would be the catalyst to spark an international movement called the “New World Order.” These things have now come to pass. Irvin Baxter Jr., a Pentecostal minister, began Endtime Ministries in 1986 when he wrote A Message For The President, a book explaining the major prophecies of the Bible which he had been teaching since 1968. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, prophetic fulfillment accelerated rapidly. The decision was made to launch Endtime magazine. The purpose of the magazine is to explain the prophecies of the Bible and to show that they are now being fulfilled in intricate detail. Articles focus on the soon return of Jesus Christ, the truth of the Bible, and the need for salvation. Endtime does not deal with doctrinal controversies, as valid as they may be. This will be left to other publications.

*globalization... Do You Mean World government?Globalization is the path of destiny for all the nations of the world. But wait a minute! What is globalization? It is astounding that a word could reshape the entire world and yet most people don’t even know what it means!

PRoPHECYREvIEWProphetic Fulfillments in 2005The year 2005 was a year of dramatic fulfillment of Bible

prophecy. We review some of the most noteworthy events.

PRoPHECYWATCHWhat to Expect in 2006Five prophetic fulfillments appear likely to occur in the next

3–5 years. Knowing what these prophetic events are will

help you understand what is likely to occur in 2006.

MIDEAsT WATCHWas the Covenant Confirmed on 9/20/2005?On September 20, 2005, a meeting of the Quartet was

held at the United Nations to reaffirm the international

community’s support of the Roadmap for Peace, a plan

* days=yEars? Prophetically, days are often reckoned as years. For example, Daniel’s 70 weeks = 490 years. The period of the Antichrist’s reign is said to be 1260 days. Could this be years? In 756 AD, Charlemagne’s fa-ther, Pepin, invested Pope Steven II with Civil Dominion over the Papal States. At this time the little horn (papacy) subdued three kingdoms: the Lombards, the Heruli and the Ostrogoths. 1260 years from this date is 2016. If this is even close, the mil-lennial reign could begin as soon.—Eric Jensen | Arlington, TX

reply| We know that the Antichrist be-gins his reign at the time of the abomi-nation of desolation (2 Thessalonians 2:3–4). We know that the abomination of desolation happens halfway through Daniel’s 70th week. If the reign of the An-tichrist were to be 1260 years instead of days, then the last half of Daniel’s 70th week would have to be 1260 years. This would make each week of Daniel’s 70 weeks 2,520 years long. That would mean the entire prophecy would cover 70 times 2,520 years or 176,400 years. The record-ed history of mankind is only 6,000 years. Consequently, this theory is impossible.

Furthermore, the Antichrist will be a man, not a system. We know this because the Antichrist will be cast alive into the lake of fire. Additionally, the papacy is not the Antichrist, but whoever occupies the papacy at the time of the Antichrist will fill the role of the False Prophet.

* FalsE CHrIsTs I understand that the first to come and claim to be Jesus will actually be the Antichrist. I hear people say Jesus is coming back soon and could be here any time. How can that be if the Antichrist is supposed to come first? What does the scripture say? Thanks.—Matt Clark

reply| Jesus did warn His disciples that false christs would arise in the last days

and deceive many. Jesus admonished His disciples to not respond if they heard rumors that Messiah was in the desert or that He was in the secret chambers. Jesus said don’t believe it and don’t even go to investigate. He went on to explain why they should pay no attention to these false reports. He said, “For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be,” (Matthew 24:27). Je-sus was simply saying that He would not show up secretly on earth at His next com-ing, but that He was coming like lightning in the clouds of heaven.

* a dIvIdEd jErusalEm? Do you believe that Sharon would give up half of Jerusalem for a concession from the Palestinians to rebuild the temple?—William Garland

reply| The only thing we can be sure of is what the Bible says. Revelation 11:2 tells us that the temple itself will be under Jewish control but that the outer court of the temple will be under Gentile control. This clearly depicts the Temple Mount un-der a sharing arrangement.

The present route of the Security Wall leaves the City of Jerusalem under Israel’s control. When Sharon spoke at the UN, he opened his speech with greetings from the eternal, undivided capital of the na-tion of Israel—Jerusalem. Since the Bible portrays terrible conflict between Israel and the Palestinians in the area of Judea three and one-half years before Armaged-don, it appears that the two will not reach agreement. It looks like Israel will move unilaterally with the support of the world community. Considering all of these fac-tors, Jerusalem itself will probably not be divided; however, the Bible is not explicitly clear on this.

* roadmap For pEaCE When do you think we will know if that was really the covenant that they signed in

September? Will it be in 3-1/2 years when the Antichrist sits on the Temple Mount claiming to be God, or will we be able to tell sooner than that by other signs? —Debra K.

reply| If, within the next two years, the Euphrates War occurs killing one-third of mankind, and construction on the temple moves toward completion, we will know that the Quartet’s reaffirmation of the Roadmap for Peace was the confirmation of the covenant. If these developments do not occur, we will know that it was not.

* THE rETurN oF bElIEvErsDaniel 12:1–4 states there are some be-lievers that are written in the book of life that will return during the tribulation time. What do you think?—Tom Ward

reply| I don’t quite see this passage re-ferring to a return of believers. In Daniel 12:1, Daniel refers to the great tribulation. He described it as a time of trouble such as never has been before, just like Jesus described it in Matthew 24:21. Then Dan-iel talks about those who will be delivered during the great tribulation period because their names are written in the book of life. Revelation 13:8 speaks of the same thing. It states that all on earth will worship the beast except those whose names are writ-ten in the Lamb’s book of life.

After teaching concerning the events of the great tribulation, Daniel 12:2 talks about the resurrection from the dead. All other related scriptures teach that the righteous dead will rise at this time, but the unrighteous will not rise until the great white throne of judgment after the 1000-

year reign of Christ is completed. Revela-tion 20:5–6 says it this way: “But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thou-sand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.”

Sometimes events in scripture are lumped together that, in reality, occur quite far apart. That appears to be the case here since other scriptures plainly declare that the unrighteous will not be a part of the first resurrection.

* a ComprEHENsIvE vIEwDo you have a complete outline (with all pertinent Bible verses) concerning the end-times?—Bobby Mitchell

reply| No, we do not. However, if you go through all three levels of Understanding the Endtime, you will have a very compre-hensive view of endtime events. We will soon add one more series to these three. I recently taught through the book of Revela-tion, verse by verse. This will be available in a few months. It will supply some addi-tional insight. See www.endtime.com

* NaTIoNal Id CHIpIs this national ID chip something that we should not take? Is it too close to the Mark of the Beast? —Karla

reply| I have determined that I will not take any mark or number on my body or in-jected under my skin. Before we reach that stage, the National ID will be given in the

form of an ID card, much like a driver’s li-cense. This will probably not be the mark of the beast, but it is moving perilously close to it. The Real ID Act, which became law on May 11, 2005, calls for all Americans to have a national ID card by 2008. We are getting so close that we will have to be very careful.

* o.T. prooF: jEsus=mEssIaHSome members of my family decided to become Jewish. We have been praying for them and talking to them about com-ing back to Jesus. They want Old Testa-ment proof that Jesus is the only way, not a Christian perspective. Do you have spe-cial prophecy software that will identify O.T. scriptures like that?—Jack Wise

reply| There are many Old Testament prophecies that prove conclusively that Je-sus is the Jewish Messiah. Isaiah 7:14 says that the Messiah would be born by virgin birth; Genesis 49:10 prophesies that He would be from the tribe of Judah; Micah 5:2 states that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem; Isaiah 53:5-6 foretells that Messiah would be wounded for our trans-gressions and would be beaten with stripes for our healing; Psalms 22:16 prophesied that His death would be by crucifixion (they pierced my hands and my feet). In Zecha-riah 11:12–13, the price of betrayal was revealed 500 years before it happened. It says that His price would be 30 pieces of silver. It also states that His price would be thrown to the potter in the house of the Lord. Judas threw the betrayal money on the floor of the temple. The priest then took the money and bought a potter’s field, per-fectly fulfilling the prophecy.

There are many more messianic proph-ecies in the Old Testament than I can list here. But this last one is amazing. In Daniel 9:24–27, the famous prophecy of Daniel’s 70 Weeks is recorded. In verse 26, it ex-plicitly states that the Messiah would come and be cut off before the city and the sanc-tuary were destroyed. We know the Ro-mans destroyed Jerusalem and the temple in 70 AD. Thus the Messiah had to be here before 70 AD. Who was the Messiah that came prior to 70 AD, and was he cut off? This obviously speaks of Jesus.

If your family is sincere, these scriptures will change their minds.

* russIaN-IsraElI warMr. Baxter, I recently heard you speak in Omaha, Nebraska. You did a tremendous job. One question lingering in my mind is this: When will the war between Russia and Israel take place? What are we to look for? Thank You.—Timothy Turnquist

reply| Russia will lead a world govern-ment army against Israel at the Battle of Armageddon. We know that this battle de-picted in Ezekiel 38 & 39 is Armageddon for several reasons. Ezekiel 39:17–20 de-scribes the great supper of our God when the birds of the air and the beasts of the field are called to eat the flesh of princes and the mighty men of war. In Revelation 19:17–20, we read the exact thing con-cerning the Battle of Armageddon.

Revelation 16:16–21 describes the events of the Battle of Armageddon. One of the prominent weapons God will use against Russia will be great hailstones. In Ezekiel 38:22 God said, “I will plead against Gog (Russia)…with great hailstones.” ¨

Iran plans to buy 29 Russian surface-to-air missiles. South Africa agreed to sell ura-nium to Tehran. Iran offered oil and gas to North Korea for help developing nuclear missiles, trying to acquire nuclear capabili-ties against international pressure.

China spent huge sums on a small special-ized army for lightning attacks on smaller foes, namely Taiwan. China’s military mod-ernization means the U.S. may not be able to quickly and easily defend Taiwan.

A book on security threats calls the U.S. “highly vulnerable” to electronic pulses from nuclear blasts in space. One nuke detonated a few hundred miles over the U.S. would cause a “catastrophe” to elec-tricity-based infrastructure, computers and telecommunication. A former Pentagon of-ficial called it “the single most serious na-tional-security challenge and certainly the least known.”

The U.S. recently debated launching mili-tary strikes inside Syria against camps of

insurgents operating in Iraq, accusing Da-mascus of allowing arms and fighters to destabilize the region. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice opposed the strikes at a meeting of senior American officials, fa-voring diplomatic isolation instead.

U.S. intelligence found a laptop computer with 1,000 pages of simulations and ac-counts of experiments allegedly proving Iran was developing nuclear warheads. The International Atomic Energy Agency may refer the case to the UN Security Council. Iran will block inspections of its atomic facilities, saying the nonproliferation treaty allows a peaceful nuclear program.

Douglas Alexander, Minister of State for Europe said the British government has “a strong vision for the future of Europe”, but critics cite little progress with the stalled EU constitution and EU budget under British presidency, some accusing Britain of isolationism.

EU’s High Representative Javier Solana lauds the EU for allowing billions of eu-ros of military spending for cross-border competition, making European defense

industries more efficient and competitive internationally.

Europeans in the EU’s six largest countries (Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Spain and UK) prefer Ukraine or Russia joining the EU than Turkey, says a French poll.

The new German government plans to use its 2007 EU presidency to revive ratification of the EU constitution put on hold when French and Dutch voters rejected it in June, 2005.

The Department of Defense is using new ways to spy on US citizens to circumvent current restrictions. The White House is considering expanding a secret Pentagon security agency instead of the FBI. Sena-tor Ron Wyden said, “We are deputizing the military to spy on law-abiding Ameri-cans in America. This is a huge leap with-out even a (congressional) hearing.”

crochip in their brains, making them more intelligent and deadly. Scientists believe the implant will vastly improve the memory of troops so that they can recall every detail of their training. The chip functions like the hippocampus — the part of the brain that deals with memory.

Analysts say spending on track-and-trace RFID will skyrocket and bar-coding will likely disappear by 2015. RFID in health-care and pharmaceuticals is projected to rise almost six-fold by 2011, due to lower risk of drugs being misplaced or given to patients incorrectly.

The IBM Center for the Business of Gov-ernment calls for the US government to make RFID a widespread technology. Re-ports out of China stress Chinese intentions to dominate technology standards in the fu-ture. South Dakota is considering a bill to make it unlawful to require a person to be implanted with an RFID tag. Six states have proposed legislation requiring disclosure for tagged consumer products. Texas considers limiting RFID for student IDs. California considers RFID legislation on contact-less smart cards and wireless ID tokens.

Ariel Sharon resigned the Likud Party which he founded and formed a new party, Kadima (Hebrew for “forward”). He wants to implement the Roadmap, strengthen the economy, and stop wasting time fighting politics in the Likud. 82-year-old Shimon Perez left the Labor Party to join Sharon. Kadima became the largest party when many followed. Hard-liner Benjamin Netanyahu now leads in the Likud, and Amir Peretz dominates Labor. Palestinian Planning Minister Khatib said Sharon’s proposals are unilateral and incompatible with Palestinian rights and international legality.

Palestinian Authority National Security Adviser Jibril Rajoub said that the Palestin-ians must fight terror and provide security for Israelis in return for the implementa-tion of the U.S. Roadmap and the creation of a Palestinian state. Israel and Palestin-ians are planning buses between the West Bank and Gaza, plus a final passageway —a tunnel or a land bridge. The World Bank is expected to finance the project.

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said Israel, as well as other nations, cannot accept Iran acquiring nuclear capabilities, and every ef-fort would be made to pressure Iran and get the UN Security Council to pass reso-lutions to sanction Iran.

Likud committee chairman Yuval Steinitz said that in seeing the data, it is clear that Iran has passed the point of no return, and will have a functioning nuclear arsenal within a year or two. Military Intelligence Chief said, “If by the end of March 2006 the international community fails to halt Iran’s nuclear weapons program, diplo-matic efforts will be pointless.”

Israel now has a massive, ultra-modern military base, U.S.-financed and built by the Army Corp of Engineers. The base was promised to Israel during the Oslo Accords to compensate for a West Bank exodus. It includes a huge logistical center for divisional forces including ten com-pany staging areas. The U.S. embassy says, “The facility provides the IDF with a lo-cation for storing military equipment for decades.” This is the largest in a series of bases the U.S. agreed to build in the Wye River Memorandum, made when Benjamin Netanyahu was prime minister, obligating Israel to relocate its military facilities from the West Bank.

Iranian President Ahmadinejad called for Israel to be “wiped off the map” during a speech entitled “World Without Zionism.” He drew world outrage. Israel demanded Tehran be expelled from the United Na-tions. “It’s the first time since the creation of the UN in 1945 that one of its mem-bers has openly called for the destruction of another,” said Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres. Italy, France, Brit-ain, Germany, the United States and oth-ers condemned the speech.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan dis-cussed a plan to reform the United Na-tions Security Council during a visit to China in December. Annan has pushed hard for reform, arguing that the council still reflects the balance of power at the end of World War Two.

The controversial protocol became fully operational after a UN climate conference adopted the final rules. 34 signatory coun-tries, not including the United States or Australia, passed the final measures, agree-ing to limit emissions of gases that cause global warming through 2012.

President Bush told Russian President Pu-tin that he supports a proposal from Mos-cow to deny Iran the ability to produce nuclear weapons. Russia, a key Iranian ally, would not go to the Security Council with suspicions that Iran is trying to build a nuclear arsenal.

A defense lawyer for ousted Iraq president Saddam Hussein wrote to Kofi Annan calling for the court to be moved to The Hague, to be given “independent and im-partial international judges” and pressure to be put on Iraqi authorities and US back-ers to recognize Saddam and his co-defen-dants as prisoners of war.

The Vatican’s foreign minister wants the Vatican and Russia to have full diplomatic relations, saying current ties do not cor-respond to the weight each wields in the world. The Holy See and the Soviet Union established official ties in 1990, but short of full diplomatic relations.

Anglican and Catholic leaders are encour-aging members of both churches and oth-er Christian denominations to regard Mary as a figure of devotion. James Lyon, pastor of Good Shepherd Episcopal said, “The new position is that there’s nothing wrong with appropriate devotion.”

Lawmakers say that Christian chaplains in all military branches are being restricted in how they can pray. One Army chaplain said it was made clear in his chaplain train-ing course that it is offensive and against Army policy to publicly pray in the name of Jesus. ¨

WORLD GOVERNMENT At the United Nations World Summit held in September of 2005, 153 world leaders converged for a huge surge for-ward into globalism. Many major devel-opments toward one-world government occurred at the World Summit.

1 } The stated purpose of the Summit was to re-emphasize the eight Millen-nium Development Goals introduced in 2000, and to generate new impetus toward attaining full compliance with those goals by 2015. The pressure for the world’s nations to meet the goals set by the world community dictates the priorities that national governments feel they have to adopt. By setting goals for the nations of the world, the United Nations has effectively succeeded in establishing control over those nations,

their futures and their actions. By claim-ing the setting of national goals for it-self, the UN has subtly but clearly ma-neuvered the nations of the world into a system of world government.2 } Advocates of world government have urged the acceptance of a global tax for many decades. They finally suc-ceeded in getting their foot in the door at World Summit 2005. A form of vol-untary global taxation was approved by the world’s nations, and twenty-five na-tions have already consented to levy the global tax in the form of surcharges on international airline flights. This money will be paid to the UN. 3 } The UN World Summit 2005 “Outcome Document” proposed to “enhance the… international monetary, financial and trading systems” – anoth-er step toward a single world monetary system. 4 } It was agreed that each nation, by 2006, must develop its own strategy to fulfill UN Development Goals, and that each should be held responsible for compliance by the UN. 5 } The United Nations called for in-creasing participation of Non-Govern-

mental Organizations (NGOs), civil so-ciety and the private sector to promote the UN global agenda – fostering more public favor toward globalism. 6 } The Summit called for involving the poorest and weakest countries in Bret-ton Woods institutions (World Bank, IMF). This will result in these countries becoming indebted to the UN and sub-ject to global controls. 7 } Another goal of the Summit was the establishment of universal primary education by 2015 with UNESCO over-sight–certainly a good goal but inevita-bly resulting in a one-world, globalist educational system. 8 } Kofi Annan was especially excited because the right to violate national sovereignty was finally enshrined in an official UN document adopted by the nations of the world. It was all done under the guise of the “Responsibility to Protect.” The Outcome Document stated that the world community had a right, and even an obligation, to protect human beings from their own govern-ments when genocide, ethnic cleansing, war crimes and crimes against humanity were suspected. This “Right to Protect”

A NEW ERA.

The year 2005 was a year of dramatic prophetic fulfillment. Here is a review of the most notable events of the past year

that clearly were fulfillments of endtime Bible prophecy.

even included the use of force, if nec-essary. 9 } Under the noble heading of “Peacebuilding”, the world community created a new department to rebuild nations torn by the ravages of war. It goes without saying that this rebuilding will be done in the image of the United Nations. 1 0 } The UN also mandated the cre-ation of a rapid deployment force that will be able to respond quickly to crises that arise around the world. At the same time the Summit endorsed the creation of a standing global police force with supranational authority.

World Summit 2005 was dutifully de-scribed as a failure by the world’s me-dia. Nothing could be further from the truth. The nations took, not one, but many huge leaps forward into world government—the world government prophesied in the Bible over which the Antichrist will soon rule.

The tremendous advances into world government made during the World Summit alone were certainly more than enough for one year. However, a num-ber of other significant developments took place in this year’s stampede to-ward global government.

In 2005, the International Criminal Court issued its first arrest warrants, activating global enforcement of global law, and thus superceding the jurisdic-tion of sovereign nations.

Countless international treaties and trade agreements were promoted during 2005, including CAFTA, WTO, Kyo-to, etc., all of which effectively create world government by stealth. Nations joining such treaties bind themselves to supranational, international strictures, seriously eroding their own sovereign-ties. The Kyoto Treaty has been the dream of the one-worlders since the Earth Summit of 1992. It was finally

put into effect in December of 2005. The only thing that spoiled the party was the refusal of the United States to participate.

A major attempt was made to glo-balize the Internet, stripping control from the US and giving it to the UN. This hostile takeover was only thwarted when the US held steadfast, absolutely refusing to even consider yielding to this technological coup by the world community.

WORLD MONEY SYSTEM The Queen of England introduced a national Identity Card bill in November of 2004, which proceeded through le-gal channels until a version passed the House of Commons and is now in the House of Lords. Linked to a National Identity Register biometric database, it will first apply to new passports.

In the United States, the REAL ID ACT was enacted on May 11, 2005, call-ing for a national ID system by 2008. New US passports will now include RFID technology. US officials have called on the UK to use a compatible system with that in the United States so that UK passports will work with US systems.

Rocky Shih, representing China’s RFID Initiative projects, said that Chi-na will issue over 1 billion RFID cards for its citizens, and three million RFID readers will be issued to Chinese police. If the U.S., U.K. and China each adopt a national electronic ID, a global ID can-not be far behind.

RFID technology is on fast track to global implementation, with both Wal-Mart and the US Department of Defense demanding RFID from all their vendors. Lately, RFID has shown up in both EURO bank notes and in new US $20 bills. Over 1,000 people already wear subdermal RFID chips. VeriChip is promoting RFID for ID

of newborns in hospitals. We’re not far from that “brave new world” where the government will be able to track every-thing—everywhere.

GLOBAL RELIGION The billion-member Roman Catholic Church got a new Pope in 2005. Joseph Ratzinger of Germany is the new Pope Benedict XVI. He has already pledged to reunify Christians of all faiths, as well as other global religions. The for-mer head of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, known as “God’s rottweiler” for his staunch defense of Catholic doctrine, claims the RCC is the “Mother” of all other Christian churches.

This year, three Roman Catholic Church Bishops issued a statement that the Bible is not totally accurate. Catho-lics also participated with the World Council of Churches in “a new era of collaboration.” The Vatican continues its global ecumenical initiatives in the spirit of Vatican II, as well as its global diplomatic initiatives, engaging both Is-raeli and Palestinian officials recently.

It should be noted that Catholics will take the majority (5 out of 9) on the U.S. Supreme Court if Judge Samuel Alito is confirmed.

Outside the RCC, Interfaithism is gaining momentum with the United Re-ligions and other entities pressing hard for inter-religious dialogue regularly at the UN. The world’s major religions are now represented annually in the Eco-nomic and Social Council chambers at the United Nations. The Vatican State is the only religion to maintain a per-manent delegate to the UN—presently Cardinal Sodano, the Vatican Secretary of State.

bring peace to the Middle East dur-ing his second term. The UN Quartet, composed of four members—the UN, the EU, the US and Russia, are cajol-ing Israel and the Palestinians to con-form to their Roadmap for Peace – a two-state solution to the never-ending Middle East crisis.

With Yasser Arafat dead, Palestinians elected Mahmoud Abbas in January 2005 as their President. The Roadmap called for Abbas to first disengage all militant terrorists, but he failed to do that. Con-sequently, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon unilaterally pulled Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip while aggressively constructing a “security fence” (a 25-foot concrete wall) throughout Israel. Detractors call it the “Apartheid (racist) Wall.” Sharon’s Likud government col-lapsed after the Gaza withdrawal, but Sharon formed a new centrist party, the Kadima. If Sharon wins the upcoming elections in March of 2006, he intends to define and establish the permanent borders of Israel. He will withdraw to his security fence, leaving the West Bank (biblical Judea) vulnerable to the great tribulation prophesied in Matthew 24:15–21.

6th TRUMPET–EUPHRATES WARChina is emerging as a major world pow-er, politically, economically and militar-

ily. Taiwan and North Korea threaten to provoke nuclear war. Kim Jong Il of North Korea flaunts his nuclear threats at the West, while China threatens to nuke the US if it interferes with Taiwan. Russia and China conduct war games, the US sends Kidd Class destroyers to Taiwan and Russia lends support to Iran’s nuclear development. All the while, Iranian President Ahmadinejad raves that the German Holocaust was not a historical fact and threatens to “wipe Israel off the map.” Arab leaders in the region are on pins and needles as Iran, Syria and Iraq face one upheaval after another. US politicians are turning up the heat on Saudi Arabia for its ma-jor support of radical Islamic terrorism (including al-Qaeda) and fundamental-ist provocations around the world.

ARMAGEDDON BUILD-UPRegional conflicts are boiling. Iraq dominates world headlines as the US oversees the transition from Saddam Hussein’s blood-thirsty Ba’ath party to a pluralistic democracy. Islamic extrem-ist insurgents from Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iran and other places persistently com-plicate the process. Syria harbors the Islamic Jihad movement in Damascus and is accused by the UN of murdering Lebanese President Rafic Hariri. The terrorist group Hamas struggles for po-

litical dominance in the upcoming Pal-estinian state.

In Israel, a newly formed Sanhedrin asserts itself as the voice of the Torah. Rabbi Chaim Richman of the Temple Institute, and a member of the 71 member Sanhedrin, announces that the Third Temple is ready for building. All furnishings are in storage, priests are al-ready trained, and the temple is ready to be prefabricated off-site.

Jerusalem continues to be “a cup of trembling” and a “burdensome stone” for all nations. Palestinians demand East Jerusalem as their capital. Ariel Sharon vows never to give an inch where Jerusalem is concerned. Shimon Peres, however, has spoken in favor of a divided Jerusalem.

The confirmation of the covenant is when the Antichrist confirms the Abra-hamic covenant that Israel should have a home in the Promise Land.

It is not yet clear whether the confir-mation of the covenant took place on September 20th, 2005 when the world community reaffirmed its support for the Roadmap for Peace. (The Roadmap for Peace contains all of the elements required for the confirmation of the covenant.)

If the covenant was not confirmed, then this pivotal event is one of the ma-jor prophecies that is likely to be fulfilled in 2006. The stage is so completely set for this fulfillment that we are not even sure that it has not already happened.

James Woolsey, CIA director under President Bill Clinton, said that World War III started on 9/11. Other noted leaders have expressed the same belief.

The Bible prophesies a massive world war that will begin from the area of the Euphrates River (Revelation 9:13-20). President Bush’s response to 9/11 was to launch the war against the nation of Iraq, which just happens to contain most of the Euphrates River. At this time, America has about 150,000 troops stationed along the Euphrates.

If the war in Iraq is the Euphrates War spoken of in the prophecy, then we can expect the conflict to get worse, not better. With all the political pres-sures being generated by the war, we can probably expect significant move-ment one way or the other during the coming year.

survive?Almost every Israeli leader that has given away portions of the Promised Land has soon thereafter been removed from office. Ariel Sharon completed his withdrawal from Gaza on September 1, 2005. By November, his government lost its majority and new elections were scheduled. The elections will be held on March 28, 2006. Will Sharon be re-placed as Israel’s leader and a new leader put in place, or will Sharon be re-elected by the people of Israel?

I do not have a crystal ball and neither has God spoken to me about what will occur. However, everything that Ariel Sharon is doing right now seems to fit perfectly with what the Bible prophe-sies for the times just ahead. Obviously, God can cause any leader to act accord-ing to His will, but it does seem likely that Sharon will be re-elected. We will soon see.

Just the thought that Israel’s temple could be built on the Temple Mount after 2,000 years is awesome to contem-

plate. Yet the prophecy is crystal clear: II Thessalonians 2:3-4 specifically states that the man of sin, the Antichrist, “…sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God.” Obviously, the Antichrist cannot sit in a temple if there is no temple.

In June of 2005, the newly reborn Sanhedrin announced its intention to begin the rebuilding of Israel’s temple. They intend to construct the temple off-site, prefabricating it as Solomon did during the building of the First Temple. It will then be ready for rapid assembly whenever the political situation allows. It appears that actual construction of the components of the temple will be in progress during 2006.

Jesus is the one who coined the phrase “great tribulation”. He referred specifi-cally to the three and one-half year pe-riod immediately preceding the Battle of Armageddon and the Second Com-ing. In Matthew 24:15-21, Jesus stated that an event on the Temple Mount (the holy place) in Jerusalem would trigger terrible violence in the area of Judea. The area of Judea to which Jesus re-ferred is the area known today as the West Bank. It is the West Bank that the Palestinians insist Israel must withdraw from next.

Ariel Sharon is in the process of building a security wall that will separate Judea from Israel proper. When the wall is finished sometime in 2006, Israel will

The following prophetic fulfillments appear likely to occur in the next three to five years: 1 The confirmation of the covenant (if it has not already happened); 2 The Euphrates War of Revelation 9:13–20; 3 The building of the Third Temple; 4 Terrible conflict over control of the West Bank; 5 One-World government. —Knowing that these prophetic events are just ahead enables us to understand what is likely to occur in 2006. Let us consider them one by one.

withdraw behind the wall, leaving Jews who choose to remain in the West Bank vulnerable to Palestinian atrocities. We will watch the completion of this wall in 2006. Understand that we will be watching the setting of the stage for the beginning of the great tribulation.

The average person does not realize the huge strides that world government has made over the last few years. The cre-ation of the World Trade Organization for controlling the world economy has placed huge power in the hands of the international community. It is under-stood in global circles that when eco-nomic union takes place, political union will inevitably follow.

The International Criminal Court, the world’s first permanent world court for individuals, just began prosecution of its first case in 2005. The ICC is the most recent prize achievement of the world government crowd. As the world

comes to accept the concept of world government, expect the world court to become more and more assertive.

The War on Terrorism has provided the excuse for government to be more and more intrusive. Those who favor world government have been happy to provide increasing levels of security at the price of increasing levels of sur-veillance and control. In 2006, we can expect the continual trumpeting of the need for a national and then a global system of ID. The rapidly expanding use of RFID chips in products will con-tinue to push us ever closer to George Orwell’s 1984.

As world crises increase, expect to hear globalists relentlessly declaring that we now live in an interdependent world, where international solutions are absolutely necessary. We will be con-tinually reminded of the necessity of globalization without anyone bothering to explain to the masses what globaliza-tion really is.

The events prophesied for the endtime are coming to pass. As we near the cul-mination of prophetic fulfillments, we can feel the increasing acceleration of world events.

From time to time, world crises pro-duce very dramatic leaps forward in prophetic events. The prophesied Eu-phrates War that will kill one-third part of men will be the greatest crisis the world has ever known. Once this war explodes upon the world with all of its fury, prophetic events will be on fast-forward all the way to Armageddon. It is very possible that this prophetic flashpoint will occur in 2006. ¨

The Bible teaches that the confirmation of the cove-nant will be an international action affecting the status of the Temple Mount and the

borders of the Holy Land. The Road-map for Peace is an international plan designed to determine the status of the Temple Mount and the borders of the Holy Land. The Roadmap for Peace document meets all of the criteria to be the prophesied confirmation of the covenant.

Roadmap histoRyIn June of 2002, the international com-munity, led by U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, decided that Palestinians

and Israelis were not able to reach peace by themselves. An international alliance called the Quartet was formed for the specific purpose of pounding out a peace agreement for the Middle East that would be fair for all parties. The al-liance was called the Quartet because it consisted of four powers: the US, the EU, Russia and the United Nations.

The Quartet negotiated for the next six months. In December of 2002, it was announced that the international community had completed its solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The document was called The Roadmap for Peace. The Roadmap was presented to the two sides in April of 2003.

On June 3, 2003, President Bush met

with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sha-ron and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas at Sharm el-Sheikh on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula. The official signing of the Roadmap for Peace took place there. Then nothing happened for the next year and a half.

The first step of the Roadmap called on the Palestinians to disarm terror-ists and to dismantle the terrorist enti-ties such as Hamas and the Islamic Ji-had. When asked why the Palestinians did not fulfill this first step so that the Roadmap could be implemented in its entirety, Abbas stated that attempting to disarm the different Palestinian fac-tions would trigger a civil war. Further-more, the late Yasser Arafat would not

surrender control of the Palestinian se-curity forces. For all practical purposes, Abbas’s hands were tied. Consequently, the terrorist attacks continued, and the Roadmap languished.

shaRon’s disengagement planRealizing that Israel did not have a legit-imate partner for peace, Sharon was un-willing to continue the cycle of violence created by Palestinian terror attacks fol-lowed by Israeli military retribution. He decided to capture the initiative by uni-laterally withdrawing from Gaza. The withdrawal was completed in August of 2005.

Sharon was applauded around the world for his courage in taking this step toward peace, even though he faced severe resistance in his own party. The international community declared that the Gazan disengagement created an opportunity to put the Roadmap for Peace back on the road.

It was announced that a meeting of the Quartet would be held at the United Nations on September 20, 2005 to re-affirm the international community’s support of the Roadmap. The Quar-tet meeting was held at the Secretary of State level with Condoleezza Rice (US), Javier Solana (EU), Sergei Lavrov (Russia) and Kofi Annan (UN). The delegates reiterated their appreciation for the courage of Ariel Sharon in im-plementing the withdrawal from Gaza. They then expressed that the withdrawal was not the last step in the Middle East peace process, but the first of several. The Quartet very clearly reaffirmed its support of the Roadmap and the future it should play in the total resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Was the covenant confiRmed on June 3, 2003?As we have stated, the Roadmap for

Peace was officially adopted on June 3, 2003. Could that have been the proph-esied confirmation of the covenant? If so, the abomination of desolation will occur in December of 2006, since the prophecies are clear that the abomi-nation of desolation occurs three and one-half years after the confirmation.

In order for the abomination of deso-lation to occur, the Jewish temple must first be built on the Temple Mount and the Euphrates War, prophesied in Rev-elation 9:13-20, must have taken place. It does not appear likely that the temple will be finished by December of 2006, although it is not totally impossible. It also seems unlikely that the Euphrates War, with its killing of one-third of mankind, will be completed within the next year; even though American troops are fighting along the Euphrates at this present time.

Unless world events surge forward immediately and dramatically, June 3, 2003, was not the confirmation of the covenant.

Was the covenant confiRmed on septembeR 20, 2005?If the biblical confirmation of the cov-enant took place on September 20th, then the abomination of desolation will occur in March of 2009. Since the Sanhedrin announced in June of this year that they were proceeding with the building of the temple, it could certainly be built by 2009. Seeing that we are al-ready fighting along the Euphrates, the Euphrates War could also be completed by 2009.

So was the reaffirming of the Road-map for Peace by the Quartet the con-firmation of the covenant? It is pos-sible, but we do not yet know for sure. As you can see, the major events that must happen prior to the abomination of desolation appear to be in the mak-

ing right now. Whether they will come to fruition quickly or slowly remains to be seen.

if not noW, When? There are many reasons to believe that we have either entered the final seven years or are very close to this proph-esied milestone. ¨ The Temple Institute in Jerusalem has now completed all the furniture and the utensils needed for the resumption of animal sacrifices in the rebuilt temple. ¨ It was announced in June 2005 that work on the Third Temple is ready to begin.¨ On May 11, 2005, President Bush signed a law that will require every American to have a National ID card in 2008. Without it, we will not drive, fly on an airplane, take a train, enter a federal building or open a bank account. This is obviously a precursor to the prophesied mark of the beast. National IDs have also been enacted or proposed in many nations around the world.

What should We be doing?Whether we have, in fact, entered the final seven years prior to Armageddon, or if this apocalyptic crossroads lies just ahead, our course of action must still be the same.

First of all, we must make sure we are ready for the Second Coming. Je-sus said, “Except a man be born again, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” (Call or send for our free brochure: “What do you mean—Born Again?” Also available at our online store at www.endtime.com)

Secondly, we should begin to win all our friends and loved ones to Jesus Christ so they too can be ready for the Second Coming. Jesus said it this way, “I must work the works of Him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.” ¨

Endtime ran this photo in the last issue. It comes from the US Dept. of State, showing the Middle East Quartet (Russia, UN, US, EU) meeting at the UN World Summit. These four are pressuring Israel to withdraw to 1967 borders. Response to this photo has been

amazing, since “666” appears so conspicuously on the wall behind the participants. (US Department of State / Michael Gross)

Strobe Talbott stated in Time maga-zine that U.S. sovereignty would cease to exist in the 21st century and that we would all answer to a single global au-thority, (“The Birth of the Global Na-tion,” Time, July 20, 1992). Shortly after making these statements, Talbott was elevated to the White House by Presi-dent Bill Clinton, where he served as Deputy Secretary of State for the next seven years.

Did President Clinton know that his Deputy Secretary of State favored the end of U.S. sovereignty and the estab-lishment of a one-world government? It is certain that he did since he and Talbott were roommates together while attending college as Rhodes scholars—not casual acquaintances by any stretch of the imagination.

John Lennon made the dream of the globalists famous when he wrote the lyrics to his top-selling song “Imagine,” (see sidebar). In it Lennon said, “Imag-ine there’s no countries…no religion too…Imagine all the people sharing all the world…I hope some day you’ll join us, and the world will live as one.”

The craving for world government did not begin with John Lennon or Strobe Talbott. In the book of Genesis, the people decided to build a city and a tower to provide a focal point for the unity of the human race. The tower of Babel and the city of Babylon became a symbol of security—oneness for man-kind. From that time till now, the dream of world government has driven men to conquest in pursuit of the vision of one world.

The ruins of the empires of history

tell the story of mankind’s yearning for globalization. Babylon, Persia, Greece, Roman and the 1000-year reign of the Holy Roman Empire all testify to the elusive longing for global brotherhood.

As nations emerged from the bloodlet-ting of World War II with its 52 million fatalities, once again the world’s leaders dared to believe the way to world peace lay in global government. Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin decided to launch one more attempt to build the elusive tower of Babel.

Since “money answers all things,” and “the love of money is the root of all evil,” their first moves were finan-cial. They reasoned that if economic union could be achieved, political and cultural union would surely follow. At the United Nations Monetary and Fi-nancial Conference at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire in July of 1944, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank were created.

On June 26, 1945, the charter cre-ating the United Nations was signed. The UN would be the political organi-zation that would supply the structure of international law in response to the development of the world economic system. This ever-growing body of in-ternational law would someday become the instrument of global governance needed as the process of globalization came to fruition.

The original purpose of the United Nations was severely hindered for over forty years by the Cold War. But on No-vember 9th, 1989, the fall of the Berlin Wall marked the end of the Cold War and the beginning of the new age of interdependence. Terms like new world order, world community and interna-

The word is everywhere. The corporations drill it into their executives, “We must think globally.” All of us have been told that we now live in a global village. Globalization is the path of destiny for all the nations of the world. Buy into the tide of globalism or be left behind, we are warned. But wait a minute! What is globalization? Do you clearly understand what the term actually means? It is astounding that a word could utterly reshape the entire world and yet most people do not even know what in the world the term means!

tional community quickly entered the world’s lexicon.

The Earth Summit of 1992 present-ed to the world the specter of global warming and its supposed ramifications for the world’s future. It was presented as a global problem that could only be met by global government. The Kyoto Treaty was offered as the answer to global warming, while at the same time providing an ingenious vehicle for much needed wealth redistribution.

By 1998, the internationalists decided the world was ready to accept an in-ternational court to adjudicate the vast body of international law. In his speech at the United Nations (September 1997), President Clinton proposed the establishment of the world’s first per-manent world court for the prosecution of individuals. By July of 1998, the In-ternational Criminal Court Statute of Rome was adopted by the nations of the world. In the fall of 2005, the ICC launched its first prosecution.

For the last 70 years, technological ad-

vancements have been contributing to globalization. The telephone, radio, television and air travel all served to make the world a smaller place. How-ever, nothing ever shrunk the world like the incredible revolution unleashed by the advent of the Internet. Suddenly, communications became instantaneous and electronic financial transfers made international financial transactions commonplace.

Corporations spread their tentacles around the world. Many businesses no longer saw themselves as American or British or German. They now were tru-ly transnational corporations. Global-ization finally hit its full stride. Wages in Mexico, India or China directly im-pacted wages in the United States. The global village was no longer just a con-cept. It suddenly was very real, and it had teeth!

By now, you’ve got the picture. Global-ization is the process that is leading us very rapidly into world government—the world government that John Len-non imagined in the1980s.

It is also the world government of the endtime over which the Antichrist

will soon rule. Daniel 7:23 records the prophecy: “The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.”

Revelation 13:7–8 speaks of the same world government: “And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”

So there you have it. Globalization is the process of moving the world into one world government. Just remember the words of Strobe Talbott: “U.S. sov-ereignty will cease to exist in the 21st century, and we will all answer to a sin-gle global authority.” ¨

It is popularly said that religion is re-sponsible for the majority of the world’s conflicts. One commentator boldly asserted, “Just look around the world today. Religion is the cause of all war and hate,” (post on BBC News ‘Talking Point’ discussion board, on the relevance of religion).

Expounding on this line of thinking is an Internet petition seeking “world peace” by the outright banning of “or-ganized religion.” This petition, which needs to be viewed for what it is – an exercise in dissent – makes it very clear that organized religion “in all its fac-tions, is responsible for most of the worlds wars and the entire ‘War on Ter-rorism’.” A number of petition signers, some showing immense tolerance by resorting to obnoxious and crude lan-guage, repeat the mantra “Religion is the cause of all wars.”

On a more serious note, Ken Wilber, a contributor to BeliefNet.com writes,

“Throughout history, religion has been the single greatest source of hu-man-caused wars, suffering, and misery. In the name of God, more suffering has been inflicted than by any other man-made cause…for every year of peace in humankind’s history there have been fourteen years of war, 90% of which have been fought either because of, or under the banner of, God by whatever name.”

Has religion really inflicted “more suffering” than any other manmade cause? Is this assumption, one shared by a large segment of society, an ac-curate notion? Certainly, it is a position that is well ingrained.

Demonstrating the imbedded nature of this popular impression, history pro-fessor Pat Johnson wrote, “I challenge my classes to comment on the follow-ing statement: ‘Organized religion has caused more suffering, wars and vio-lence than any other cause.’ Almost all the students raise their hands in agree-

ment.”Logically, if religion has been the

major cause of the world’s wars and death, then religion should shoulder the burden of responsibility towards making peace. Today, this rationale un-derscores much of the global interfaith movement, including the recent United Nations Conference on Interfaith Co-operation for Peace.

But can the finger of guilt really point to religion as the primary cause of war and strife?

In analysing this hypothesis of religion’s global war guilt, let’s examine the role of religion as the primary killing factor in the bloodiest century of all time — the last one hundred years. As Winston Churchill explained during the MIT Mid-Century Convocation,

“Little did we guess that what has been called the Century of the Com-mon Man would witness as its out-

If a global motto exists, it would have to be “Give Peace a Chance.” From every corner of the world, from every academy and institution, from every school, church, and public office, it seems that the cry for global peace is being sounded. Peace is a noble idea; but since mankind has had a written history, we have never known true peace. The scattered, bleached

bones of human history testify to this brutal truth millions upon millions of times over. So, is mankind incapable of achieving ultimate peace on earth? In a nutshell, yes. But accepting this reality does not imply that we should automatically embrace conflict and strife.

standing feature more common men killing each other with greater facilities than any other five centuries together in the history of the world.”

So was religion the prime death fac-tor — the single greatest source of war and suffering for this very cruel and brutal century?

To understand the answer to this question, we should chart the major wars and human-caused genocides that occurred during this time frame. To do this in the space allotted for this short article, we will use a lower stop-limit number—1.5 million—as a minimum death total.

Please bear in mind that this chart will not be able to list or isolate all exam-ples. The death figures for World War

II could be broken down into holocaust tabulations, single battle totals, etc., but we will keep it simpler.

Furthermore, it is important to note that many historical conflicts and kill-ings lack accurate death tabulations, and in some instances (such as killings done under Stalin and Mao), the numbers given in our chart may actually be too low.

Other problems arise from the lack of concrete death totals. For example: figures for the Mexican uprisings of 1910-1920 vary between 750,000 and 2 million dead. Likewise, the decades-old Rwanda/Burundi conflict falls into this statistically difficult range. Because of the variances in accounting up to the 1.5 million mark, we will omit these two

examples, along with many others that display complex numerical discrepan-cies below the 1.5 million minimum.

However, the following death-inven-tory [chart below] will suffice for our brief review. Notice how many of these mass-killing events had classical religion as its central cause.

The sheer horror and brutality of mankind throughout the twentieth cen-tury cannot be properly demonstrated in a simple chart. However, it is more than apparent that the principal cau-sations of the majority of these awful events — especially those with death numbers more than five million high — cannot be laid at the feet of classical religion.

his statement, “Organized religion has caused more suffering, wars and vio-lence than any other cause”? Professor Johnson just baited his students, and as the good professor tells us, “Almost all the students raised their hands in agree-ment.”

“I then demand that they provide dead bodies as evidence. They usually men-tion the Crusades and one or two other religious wars they might have heard of but in none of their examples can they come up with a million deaths…I then point out that most of the people who have died as a result of war, have done so in the Twentieth Century and that most of the killing was done in the name of secular ideologies. I then ask them who is the ‘baddest’ of them all. Most guess Hitler. I then tell them that he is rated #3. Some then guess Stalin and I inform them that most scholars place him at #2 with 20 million killed. Almost no one gets #1 who, of course, is Mao who starts with an estimated 40 million. I then point out that the top two were Communists and Hitler was a radical proponent of Social Darwin-ism. All of these ideologies are based on atheistic systems.”

Matthew White, a librarian who has done a tremendous amount of study in genocide and war issues, and is the au-thor of the on-line Historical Atlas of the Twentieth Century, gives this Q&A

response to the question of “religion.”

“Q: Is religion responsible for more violent deaths than any other cause?A: No, of course not — unless you define religion so broadly as to be meaningless. Just take the four deadli-est events of the 20th Century — Two World Wars, Red China and the Soviet Union — no religious motivation there, unless you consider every belief system to be a religion.”

Maj. John P. Conway, studying at the US Army Command & General Staff Col-lege at Fort Leavenworth, commented in an article “War and Religion: Is Reli-gion to Blame?”

Most times, it can be argued that religion may play a key and significant role in the conduct of warfare on a psychological and cultural level, but is it the cause of warfare? Do nations, states and kingdoms wage war over religion? Is religion a primary cause of conflict between governments? Many have argued that it is. Another popular statement is, ‘Religion has been the cause of more wars than any other factor throughout history.’ This is commonly accompanied by ‘people have been killing each other in the name of God for centuries.’ Upon closer examina-tion, these statements exude an element of mythology versus fact… A fundamental

analysis of past wars commonly attributed to ‘religion,’ as the causal factor, may reveal an uninformed and reactionary misjudge-ment. Throughout the course of history, the cause of warfare between sovereign states, kingdoms, and governments is attributable to many factors, but can rarely be attributed to ‘religion’ as is so often the assertion.

Maj. Conway continues,…it becomes apparent that those who make the claim ‘religion has been the cause of more wars than any other factor in history’ may speak from ignorance or have ulterior mo-tives for the assertion. Further, this type of assertion seems rooted in anti-religion pos-turing… Men and nations have a history of warfare and the root of conflict is power and gain… Occasionally war is fought over religion, as is perhaps the case during the reformation period in Europe. More often than not however, the cause of war can’t be laid at the door of religion.

Certainly religion plays a motivational and ruse factor in various conflict sce-narios. All kinds of pretexts can be used in inciting and snow-balling hostilities. In 1969, soccer played a key role in ex-ploding tensions between Honduras and El Salvador.

But as a whole, the main cause of the major genocides and wars of the last one hundred years lies outside of purely religious stimuli. Moreover, even wars that contain a deep religious element

often have multiple causations, includ-ing economic, political, and territorial grievances.

None of this is to say that religion is innocent when it comes to strife. His-torically, we can cite the Crusades, the Reformation genocides, and the mass slaughters done in the name of Allah — such as during the Wars of Apostasy. And in modern times, we can see the effects of Catholic-Protestant clashes in the British Isles, Hindu-Islamic hos-tilities in India, the Islamic-Christian slaughters in Sudan, Buddhist-Hindu warfare in Sri Lanka, Moslem-Christian fighting in Indonesia, and the constant struggle in the Middle East between Is-rael and her Moslem neighbours.

However, in terms of the largest concentration of outright killing ca-pacity, communism, national socialism, and imperial expansionism — all power struggles based on centralist meth-odologies — have been the grandest contributor to war and human-caused mass death. Nothing else comes even remotely close.

Clearly, to exert that “religion is the cause of all war and strife” demonstrates a severe degree of historical naivety, or deeply distorted emotional blinders, or the outright broadcasting of disinfor-mation for an ulterior motive (see Maj. Conway’s quote above).

For the students of Mr. Johnson’s class, naivety is the most probable rea-son for their belief in this religion-war mythology. But for others, ulterior mo-tives exist.

When wrong suppositions are em-ployed, wrong results are guaranteed. As already demonstrated, the war/re-ligion assumption is nothing short of faulty. While religions today and his-torically have been culpable (Islam is a prime example in both modern and ancient contexts), religion has not been the prime cause in every instance of war and strife, not even in the most extraor-dinary cases of the twentieth century. Embracing this mythology as fact, those who are in the quest for world peace are building on a shaky foundation.

But regardless of the incorrect na-ture of the above point of view, many religious authors and spiritual leaders hold to this assumption. Then, taking motivational cues from this war-caused-by-religion theory, a response is formu-lated around another faulty assumption: since faith communities are to blame for the world’s sorrows, religions need

to unite under a common umbrella to ensure peace and security prevails.

Therefore, by uniting faiths in the push towards world peace, the divisions that drive humanity to mass violence will be bridged. Today’s global interfaith movement takes this approach.

So does Ken Wilber of BeliefNet.com. Postulating this idea of religious unity in light of religion’s historical war burden, Wilber explains,

If humanity is ever to cease its swarming hostilities and be united in one family, with-out squashing the significant and important differences among us, then something like an integral approach seems the only way. Until that time, religions will continue to brutally divide humanity, as they have throughout history, and not unite, as they must if they are to be a help, not a hindrance, to tomor-row’s existence.

So what does it mean to be religiously “united in one family”?

Marcus Braybrooke, president of the World Congress of Faiths, explores this theme in his book, Faith and Interfaith in a Global Age,

My hope—though certainly not the hope of all in the interfaith movement—remains that dialogue will eventually bring conver-gence or, at least, that theology will become an inter-religious discipline or ‘global theol-ogy.’

German Catholic theologian Hans Küng describes a similar pan-spiritual unification, “after intra-Protestant and intra-Christian ecumenism we have ir-revocably reached the third ecumenical dimension, ecumenism of the world religions!”

Küng and Braybrooke’s concept of universalism is shared by a large assort-ment of spiritual thinkers, and even some religions. John Davis and Naomi Rice — both connected with the Coptic Fellowship International — succinctly tells us that “the ultimate objective is a fellowship of religions, and the gradual appearance of a world-faith, which in its broader concept will be able to en-compass all humanity.”

Similarly, the Bahá’í International Community, the global representative of the Bahá’í faith, openly asserts, “The key to interfaith harmony and co-opera-tion is to focus on the essential oneness of all religions.”

To a global public sick of war and bloodshed, the above unification ideol-ogy becomes a very appealing venue. Yet this postulation flies in the face of anthropology, sociology, history, and

theology. The belief sets of Christian-ity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Ani-mism, Hinduism and others are funda-mentally and irrevocably disconnected — including definitions of who God is (or is not), the constitution of Man, the problem of evil, and the redemption solution to humanity’s failed state. Fur-thermore, the concept that all religions are “equally valid” is logically inconsis-tent.

If all religions are authenticated as valid, we must then admit each spiritual expression into this new “global reli-gious club” as legitimate forms. There-fore, cults-of-death such as the Aum Supreme Truth movement — which was accused of delivering nerve gas in-side a Tokyo subway train — must be more than just tolerated, it must be em-braced as a legitimate source of truth. Satanism, too, along with any other anti-social belief system, no matter how disagreeable, must be accepted on par and received into this universal fold.

Clearly, this “world faith for world peace” assumption is also lacking in credibility. However, this should not come as a surprise. After all, this flawed unity concept is designed around the first fabrication — that religion is the cause of all war.

A house of truth cannot be built on lies, yet these are attempting to construct the perfect dream of world peace on a foundation of lies. Waving the flags of tolerance and solidarity, religion is look-ing to re-invent itself to a new level of “planetary responsibility” — devoid of truth, logic, and reality.

Indeed, as mankind sacrifices truth in the pursuit of peace, the only peace gained will come at the sacrifice of lib-erty. Why? Because such a system, mis-directed from the onset, can only co-erce and enforce. Whenever mankind imposes a utopian peace design — cre-ating peace at the expense of reality — it inevitably becomes a bloody utopian dream. (See “Bloody Utopian Dreams” at gracesite.net). A “world faith - world peace” structure may actually raise a terrifying banner: “Peace is the destruc-tion of all opposition.” ¨
