WHAT IS BANDH •

The expression Bandh is actually a Hindi term, whichstands for closure or shutdown.

• It is nothing but a kind of remonstration carried out by

the political parties and outfits.

• At the time when a bandh is taking place, a group ofpeople or political parties announce a work stoppage.

• Some people believe that bandh are strong measuresfor civil revolution.

•Bandhs and strikes in India have become an integralfeature of the life of the Indian citizens.

•The history of bandhs and strikes in India is

associated with many political parties in India,especially the left parties.

•Nowadays, the relevance or importance of thesestrikes is diminishing.

• Indian people have different views about thesebandhs.

•Every action has its opposite equal reaction – Newton

•A bandh is a powerful means of civil disobedience.

•Protest against the government is to show our dissatisfaction for its policies.

Studies are affected•The school authorities have no choice but to close

the school or educational institution.

•These are due to fears of political turbulence andchaos.

• If they keep the schools open, the life of the studentsis put to risk which is not desirable at all.

Daily labors and workers lose wages

•Daily labor or casual worker lose wages livelihood for that particular day.

•They can’t go to work and therefore lose their daily

wages which is a huge concern for them.

Patients get affected•Since the transportation system during a bandh is

lamed.

•Patients can’t reach the hospitals when the need isutterly high.

•Pregnancy cases and emergency patients are themostly affected ones during a bandh or strike.

•All it leads to horrible outcomes.

Tourism industry and small businesses are affected• Tourists coming to a state get a bad impression when they

see the evils of a bandh or hartal.

• This is not beneficial for the travel and tourism industry.

• Small businesses are also hit by these meaningless bandhsand strikes. Since they largely depend on their daily sales or turnover.

People’s lives are at risk

•Due to clashes between political parties and stateadministration (police), people often get injured.

•On certain occasions, the injuries become so seriousthat innocent people lose their lives.

Compulsion to participate in bandhs

•On many occasions, it has been witnessed thatpeople are forced and threatened to participate in

bandhs.

•Most of the cases its against the will of common

people.

•Political parties do this for their own benefit.
