I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

Taiwan’s tech industry for years.
However, 2011 saw the computer giant post
its first loss in a decade.
Despite slashing2 300 jobs in June,
Chairman and CEO J.T. Wang has said breaking
even this year has now become impossible. The
admissionh came less than two months after
Wang had predicted a full-year profit for 2011
— the latest in a series of wonkyh forecasts.
Three times in 2011, the company has been
forced to downwardly revise3 its shipping
projections. Most recently, figures of 5-7 million
in tablet sales were adjusted to around half that
amount. Meanwhile, the company has been
the fourth-worst performer on the Taiex,† its
shares plummeting4 65 percent. Fourth also
represents Acer’s market share standing,h with
Dell and Lenovo knocking it back from second
over the past year.
The advent5 of the tablet market has cut
into Acer’s netbook and laptop profits. The
problem is whether Acer is responding with
the right strategy. Gianfranco Lanci, who
resigned as CEO in March, certainly didn’t
think so. The Italian wanted Acer to become
more tablet- and mobile-oriented, and to
expand its engineering workforce pool outside
Taiwan. Lanci says Acer’s bigwigs6 feared the
“de-Taiwanization” of the firm. “People after a
few years will decide who was wrong,” Lanci
said in a recent interview.

CEO, J.T. Wang did not share Lanci’s view.
Although Wang accepted the Q2 debacle1
was tablet-driven, he insisted the craze2 for
the portable devices was cooling.
Wang’s favored strategy is to stick to
Acer’s guns and continue to focus on the
notebook market. “New laptops, called
Ultrabooks, that are lighter, thinner and
turn on instantly, will boost sales from the
fourth quarter,” Wang told Bloomberg† in
August. The plan is to bite back a piece of
the pie, with Wang citing surveys that show
enthusiasm for Intel-powered alternatives to
Apple’s MacBook Air.
However, some industry analysts think
the Acer chief is living in cloud-cuckoo-land.†
