industry faced a double whammy from
China’s low cost manpower and material. Giant,
which began life as an OEM,† initially

Giant solidified1 its
corporate foundation
by leaps in quality,
marketing, R&D† and
service. In the meantime, the
“Global Reach, Local Roots”
corporate mantra2 has propelled Giant
onto the world stage.
New challenges have emerged3 in recent
years. A global oversupply of bicycles has
triggered4 survival-mode price-cutting. This,
combined with increased competition, has
forced higher-end manufacturers like Giant
to refocus their efforts toward
the lower reaches of the

一九八○年代尾聲,台灣的自行
車產業面臨了中國低成本人力與物力
的雙重夾擊。以代工製造自行車起家
的捷安特最初也成了這波成本優勢的
受害者。然而,捷安特採用跨國經營
模式和自創品牌,將危機化為轉機。
捷安特從品質、行銷、研發和服務等

alliances. To this end, Giant
has signed contracts with
distributors around the island.
These deals stipulate1 that
outlets must offer the same
post-sale service available
at Giant’s directly-managed
stores.
I n t e r m s o f c r o s s -
sector alliances, the hope
is to achieve synergy.2 For
example, the newly-opened
Liv/Giant flagship store in
Taichung offered customers
cut-price tickets to the movie
“ Ta i p e i E xc h a n g e s” f o r
transactions over NT$500.
This cut both ways, with
shopping rebates3 available
to customers displaying movie
ticket stubs. Bike and ticket
sales both saw positive results.
Giant also introduced its
own travel agency in October

provide custom-made tours in
Taiwan and abroad. To date,
more than 3,000 cyclists and
100 plus social groups have
participated in tours organized
by the agency. A target of
more than 10,000 cyclists
this year has been set, and
revenue is expected to move
above NT$100 million.

為因應短程旅行的消費需求,捷安特推出自行車租賃服務,目前全台共有十八個

At a time when female spending power is at
an all-time high, Giant has not been idle1 in the
women’s market. In 2008, the company was the
first to roll out2 a bike brand targeting female
consumers — Liv/Giant.
Since then, three Liv/Giant stores have opened
in Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung, providing female
cyclists with products, services and riding classes.
The next step is to establish a global distribution
network, with stores in 12 more countries.
With manufacturing facilities located in cities
like Tianjin and Chengdu, the overriding3 ambition
has been to conquer4 the China market. Last year,
Giant achieved that goal, with total production at
4.5 million, making it the market leader. To expand
its production capacity, Giant has invested US$35
million in a new factory in Kunshan. Giant also
plans to pump NT$1.1 billion into the construction
of China’s f irst ever bicycle park. Giant’s
“Momentum” brand, which differentiates5 itself
with its design to appeal to budget cyclists and city
commuters, has begun making moves6 in cities
across China.
Above all, it is King Liu’s passion for bikes and
cycling that has fueled Giant’s climb to the top.
Ahead of his next tour in the Netherlands, Liu said,
“I have spent 36 years at Giant to build the best
quality bicycles in the world. Now I would like to
spend my next 36 years sharing the joy of the ride
with all the people in the world.”

T HE Taipei Toy Festival turns seven this year. Asia’s only major
designer toy event, TTF showcases items from more than 100
manufacturers1 and private collectors across the world.
This year’s “Monster vs. Toys” theme is sure to be a hit with
toy fans, and many of the toy designers have released special
collectible2 figurines3 to mark the occasion. The TTF will also host
Taiwan’s first Graphic Novel and Comic Book Fair, featuring works
by top Hollywood animation artists. Other toy and comic-related
