ArchitectuurrouteAntwerpen, fietsen en architectuur, het is een geweldige combinatie. Uit elke eeuw, periode of stijl in de architectuur heeft Antwerpen wel een voorbeeld. Dankzij deze bewegwijzerde fietsroute van 30 kilometer ontdek je de mooiste hoogtepunten in en rond Antwerpen. 1 GROTE MARKT

Op de Grote Markt bewonder je tal van bouwstijlen. Van de Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal, de grootste gotische kerk van de Nederlanden, tot het stadhuis, een icoon van de renaissance-architectuur en de pittoreske gildehuizen.

Tip van Noortje: Op deze toeristische hotspot een originele foto trekken? Het kan: ga op zoek naar grappige details in de voet van het stand-beeld van Brabo.

On the Grote Markt, there are numerous architectural styles to admire. From the Cathedral of Our Lady, the largest Gothic church in the Low Countries, to the Town Hall, an icon of Renaissance architecture and the picturesque Guild Houses.

Tip from Noortje: At this tourist hotspot, per-haps you want to take an original photo? Look out for funny details in the foot of the statue of Brabo.

2 SCHELDEKAAIEN MET HET STEEN

Aan de Schelde, waar Antwerpen ontstond, vind je het oudst bewaarde gebouw van Antwerpen: Het Steen. De eerste stenen dateren van de 11de eeuw. Stap zeker eens binnen in het infopunt op het Steenplein om de spannende toekomstplannen van Het Steen te ontdekken.

Tip van Noortje: Probeer het beeld van de Lan-ge Wapper vanuit kikkerperspectief te fotogra-feren, dat geeft meteen een heel ander zicht.

SCHELDT QUAYS AND STEEN CASTLE On the Scheldt, where Antwerp originated, you will find the oldest preserved building in Antwerp: Steen Castle. The first stones date from the 11th century. Be sure to step inside the info point at Steenplein to discover Steen Castle's exciting plans for the future.

Tip from Noortje: Try to photograph the image of the Lange Wapper from a low-angle perspec-tive, which gives you a completely different view.

3 HET EILANDJE

Vandaag is het een een hippe wijk, in het verleden lag hier de Antwerpse haven. Die maritieme sfeer proef je: oude pakhuizen, moderne lofts, woontorens ontworpen door befaamde architecten, een jachthaven, zomerbars en toprestaurants... je vindt het hier allemaal.

Today it is a hip neighbourhood, however, in the past the port of Antwerp was located here. You can feel that maritime atmosphere: old warehouses, modern lofts, residential towers designed by famous architects, a marina, summer bars and starred restaurants ... you'll find it all here.

4 MAS | MUSEUM AAN DE STROOM

Dé blikvanger op het Eilandje werd gebouwd door Neutelings-Riedijk Architecten, op de plek waar stad en haven elkaar ontmoeten. Daarvan getuigen zowel de prachtige architectuur als de museumcollectie.

Tip van Noortje: Neem de gratis roltrap naar het dak van het MAS en neem foto’s van de prachtige vergezichten over Schelde, stad en haven.

The eye catcher on the Eilandje was built by Neutelings-Riedijk Architects, on the spot where the city and harbour meet. Both the beautiful architecture and the museum collection testify to this.

Tip from Noortje: Take the free escalator to the roof of the MAS and take photos of the beauti-ful views over the Scheldt, city and harbour.

5 RED STAR LINE MUSEUM

Tussen 1873 en 1935 stapten hier ruim twee miljoen mensen op een schip van de Red Star Line, op weg naar een beter leven in Amerika. Het museum vertelt het verhaal van deze passagiers in de originele gebouwen en loodsen van de rederij.

Between 1873 and 1935, more than two million people embarked on a Red Star Line ship on their way to a better life in America. The museum tells the story of these passengers in the original buildings and sheds of the shipping company.

6 BELVÉDÈRE DROOGDOKKENPARK

Tussen de Kattendijksluis en het Havenhuis verrijst de komende jaren het Droogdokkenpark: een unieke groene uitwaaiplek met speelzone en amfitheater voor evenementen.

Tip van Noortje: Fiets even tot aan de Schelde om een foto te nemen. Een geweldig land-schap, een mooie zonsondergang... het wordt alleen maar mooier als je een voorgrond in je foto plaatst. Je fiets tegen een meerpaal bijvoorbeeld.

DRY DOCKS PARKBetween the Kattendijk lock and the Port House, the Dry Docks Park will be realised in the coming years: a unique green area with a recreational zone and an amphitheatre for events.

Tip from Noortje: Cycle right up to the Scheldt to take a photo. An incredible landscape, a beautiful sunset ... it only gets better if you add a foreground to your photo. Your bike against a bollard for example.

7 HAVENHUIS

De hoofdzetel van het Havenbedrijf Antwerpen is een ontwerp van het prestigieuze bureau Zaha Hadid Architects. Deze fonkelende verschijning zet de Antwerpse haven op de architecturale wereldkaart.

Tip van Noortje: Onderzoek wijst uit dat blauw-getinte foto’s het meeste aantal likes krijgen. Op een zonnige dag weerspiegelt het water en de lucht in het glas van het gebouw.

PORT HOUSEThe head office of the Antwerp Port Authority is a design by the prestigious Zaha Hadid Architects. This sparkling appearance has installed the Port of Antwerp on the architectural world map.

Tip from Noortje: Research shows that blue-tinted photos get the most number of likes. On a sunny day, the water and the air are reflected in the glass of the building.

8 KERKSCHIP

In het Houtdok zie je het Kerkschip liggen, een Duits betonnen tankschip uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog, aangeslagen als oorlogsbuit. Nu fungeert het als parochiekerk voor de varende gemeenschap. Stap er zeker even binnen en snuif de sfeer van het schippersleven op.

CHURCH SHIP You can see the Church Ship, a German concrete tank ship from the Second World War, claimed as spoils of war. It now functions as a parish church for the seafaring community. Step carefully inside and partake of the atmosphere of the life of the sailor.

9 NOORDER- PERSHUIS BROUWERIJ SEEFBIER

In het Noorderpershuis brachten vroeger stoom-turbines water onder druk om de sluisdeuren en bruggen van de haven te bedienen. Nu vind je hier de Antwerpse Brouw Compagnie. Een ideaal moment voor een verfrissing.

NOORDERPERSHUIS - BREWERY SEEFBIER In the Noorderpershuis, steam turbines used to pressurise water to operate the ports lock gates and bridges. The Antwerpse Brouw Compagnie is located here now. An ideal moment for a cool refreshment, wouldn't you say?

10 PARK SPOOR NOORD

Via de mooie fietsbrug bereik je Park Spoor Noord. Dit vroegere afgeleefde spoorwegterrein is nu een groene, open ruimte in het drukbevolkte Antwerpen-Noord. Sporten, luieren, zonnebaden, fietsen, barbecueën... het kan hier allemaal.

Tip van Noortje: De parkbrug is een ware Instagram-hit. Speel met het licht dat door de gaatjes van de brug valt.

You reach Park Spoor Noord via the beautiful bicycle bridge. This former decrepit railway premise is now a green, open space in the densely populated Antwerp North. Sports, lazing around, sunbathing, cycling, barbecuing ... everything is possible here.

Tip from Noortje: The park bridge is a true Instagram hit. Play with the light that falls through the gaps in the bridge.

11 PANAMARENKO- HUIS | SINT-JANSPLEIN

Kijk ter hoogte van de Biekorfstraat 2 zeker naar boven. Zie je daar een helikopterplatform? Dit is het geboortehuis van Panamarenko, een van de belangrijkste Belgische kunstenaars uit de 20e eeuw. Even verderop, op het Sint-Jansplein, bots je op een van zijn werken: Pepto Bismo.

PANAMARENKO HOUSE | SINT-JANSPLEIN When you get to Biekorfstraat 2, look up. Do you see a helicopter platform there? This is the birthplace of Panamarenko, one of the most influential Belgian artists of the 20th century. A little further on, at Sint-Jansplein, you will encounter one of his works: Pepto Bismo.

12 CENTRAAL STATION | ZOO VAN ANTWERPEN

Een absolute must-see is het Centraal Station, een topper van de eclectische stijl. Naast het station vind je de Zoo van Antwerpen. Hier stelen de dieren de show, maar ook de gebouwen spreken tot de verbeelding.

Verkorting: Geen tijd of zin om de volledige route te fietsen? Kies ter hoogte van de Zurenborgstraat dan voor de verkorting. Dan leg je 16 km af in plaats van 30 km. Less is more, want je fietst door het hippe Groen Kwartier en je passeert Brouwerij De Koninck, het nieuwe Provinciehuis en kunstencentrum deSingel. Ter hoogte van het Zuid sluit je opnieuw aan op de lange route.

CENTRAL STATION | ANTWERP ZOOAn absolute must-see is the Central Station, an exquisite exemplar of the eclectic style. Next to the station, you will find Antwerp Zoo, where the animals steal the show, but the buildings also appeal to one's imagination.

Shortcut: No time or desire to cycle the entire route? Then, choose the shortcut at the Zurenborgstraat. You will then cover 16 km instead of 30 km. Less is often more, as is the case here, because you cycle through the trendy Groen Kwartier and pass De Koninck Brewery, the new Provinciehuis and the arts centre deSingel. When you reach Het Zuid, you will rejoin the longer route.

13 ZURENBORG

Fiets onder de spoorweg door en je komt in een prachtige belle epoquewijk terecht. In de Cogels-Osylei, Transvaalstraat en Waterloostraat kijk je je ogen uit. Bewonder de mooiste neostijlen en art nouveau van België.

Tip van Noortje: De Cogels-Osylei is mijn favo-riete straat in deze wijk, maar ook de brug op de Draakplaats is een dankbaar onderwerp.

Cycle under the railway and you end up in a beautiful Belle Epoque quarter. You won't believe your eyes in the Cogels-Osylei, Transvaalstraat and Waterloostraat. Admire the most beautiful neo styles and art nouveau Belgium has to offer.

Tip from Noortje: The Cogels-Osylei is my favourite street in this neighbourhood, but the bridge on the Draakplaats is a rewarding subject as well.

14 TE BOELAERPARK

In dit park zijn de oude koetshuizen en orangerie van een verdwenen kasteel nu parkscholen. In de Van Notenstraat ontdek je gevels in de stijl van de ‘nieuwe zakelijkheid’. Voorbij het kruispunt met de Boekenberglei zie je rechts de classicistische gevel van het kasteel Boekenberg.

In this park, the old coach houses and orangery of an erstwhile castle are now park schools. In the Van Notenstraat, you will discover façades in the 'New Objectivity' style. Beyond the intersection with the Boekenberglei, you will see the classical façade of the Boekenberg castle on the right.

15 BOEKENBERGPARK | WONING BRAEM

In dit 19de-eeuwse park ontdek je een serpentine-vijver, een rotsbrug met jachttoren en grotten waar een klein natuurhistorisch museum is ondergebracht. Op de Menegemlei 23 staat de woning van Renaat Braem, een van de belangrijkste Belgische architecten van na de Tweede Wereldoorlog.

BOEKENBERG PARK | BRAEM HOUSE In this 19th-century park, you will discover a serpentine lake, a rock bridge with a hunting tower and caves where a small natural history museum is housed. The residence of Renaat Braem is located at Menegemlei 23, who was one of the most important post-World War II Belgian architects.

16 UNITASWIJK | BOEKENBERGLEI

Je fietst langs Café Exter, waarschijnlijk de oudste herberg van Deurne. Verderop vind je de de Unitas-wijk: 199 eengezinswoningen, gebouwd in dezelfde stijl. Kijk goed rond als je door de Boekenberglei fietst, er staan tal van boeiende herenhuizen en villa’s.

UNITAS DISTRICT | BOEKENBERGLEIYou cycle past Café Exter, probably the oldest inn in Deurne. Further on, you will find the Unitas district: 199 single-family homes, built in the same style. Take a good look around as you cycle through the Boekenberglei, there are plenty of fascinating mansions and villas.

17 INTERNATIONALE LUCHTHAVEN ANTWERPEN

De architectuur van de Antwerpse luchthaven beantwoordt aan de regels van het modernisme: een constructie van gewapend beton, witbepleis-terde gevels en bandramen. Ernaast ligt Museum Stampe & Vertongen, waar je op zaterdagen zondag-namiddag oude tweedekkers kan bewonderen.

ANTWERP INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT The architecture of the Antwerp airport adheres to the rules of modernism: a construction of reinforced concrete, white-plastered façades and ribbon windows. Next to it is Museum Stampe & Vertongen, where you can admire old biplanes on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

18 BRILSCHANS EN KERKHOF BERCHEM

Het Brilschanspark is een restant van een oude vestinggracht. Nadat je de Grote Steenweg hebt overgestoken, kom je in een residentiële wijk met architectuur uit de jaren dertig. Hou halt aan het kerkhof van Berchem en wandel langs de monumentale grafzerken.

Tip van Noortje: De evenwijdige lijnen van de grafzerken zorgen voor ritme in je foto’s. Dit is een ideale plek om hiermee te experimenteren.

BRILSCHANS AND BERCHEM CEMETERY The Brilschans Park is a remnant of an old moat. After crossing the Grote Steenweg, you enter a residential neighbourhood with architecture from the 1930s. Stop at the Berchem Cemetery and wander past the monumental gravestones.

Tip from Noortje: The parallel lines of the gra-vestones provide rhythm in your photos. This is an ideal place to experiment with this.

19 MIDDELHEIMPARK

21 MAISON GUIETTE VAN LE CORBUSIER

Aan de Populierenlaan 32 staat Maison Guiette, de enige woning in België ontworpen door Le Corbusier. In deze modelwoning uit 1927 paste de beroemde Franse architect enkele nieuwe principes van de functionalistische bouwstijl toe.

MAISON GUIETTE BY LE CORBUSIER Maison Guiette is located at Populierenlaan 32, the only house in Belgium designed by Le Corbusier. This model house from 1927 showcases some avant garde applications of the famous French architect's new principles of functionalist architecture.

22 TENTOONSTELLINGSWIJK

Twee paviljoenen van de wereldtentoonstelling van 1930 zijn bewaard: de Kristus Koningkerk met Byzantijnse en Romaanse elementen en het schoolgebouw in de Pestalozzistraat, met kenmerken van de Nederlandse nieuwe zakelijkheid.

Two pavilions from the 1930 World Exhibition have been preserved: the Kristus Koning church with Byzantine and Roman elements and the school building in the Pestalozzistraat, with characteristics of the Dutch New Objectivity style.

23 JUSTITIEPALEIS

Je kan er niet naast kijken: het Vlinderpaleis, zoals de Antwerpenaars hun justitiepaleis noemen. Het ontwerp van Richard Rodgers siert sinds 2006 de skyline van Antwerpen. Aan de talrijke bouwkranen merk je dat hier een compleet nieuwe stadswijk verrijst: ‘Nieuw Zuid’.

Tip van Noortje: Maak een foto van het mooie avondlicht dat op het dak van het Vlinderpaleis valt.

PALACE OF JUSTICE It's impossible to miss it: the 'Butterfly Palace', as the people of Antwerp call their new palace of justice. The design by Richard Rodgers has graced the skyline of Antwerp since 2006. The numerous construction cranes foretell the emergence of a completely new city district: 'Nieuw Zuid'.

24 HET ZUID

Het Zuid is een populaire stadswijk met tal van musea, galerijen, winkels, bars en restaurants. Ook qua architectuur heeft de wijk veel te bieden: onder meer het standbeeld van Lambermont op de Lambermontplaats, de Waterpoort en het Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten. Deze laatste opent terug in 2020, na een jarenlange verbouwing.

Tip: maak een toertje rond het museum: in de Beeldhouwersstraat 22 zie je een prachtige gevel in art nouveau uit 1902, in de Bouwmees-tersstraat zie je de monumentale hoofdsynago-ge van de Israëlische Gemeente, op de hoek van de Schildersstraat en Plaatsnijdersstraat be-wonder je de huizengroep ‘De Vijf Werelddelen’, ook bekend als ‘t Bootje en in de Volksstraat 40 is de unieke gevel van het Liberaal Volkshuis zeker de moeite om te bekijken.

Het Zuid is a popular city district with numerous museums, galleries, shops, bars and restaurants. The district also has much to offer in terms of architecture: including the Lambermont statue on Lambermontplaats, the Water Gate and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts. The latter reopens in 2020, after years of renovation.

Tip: take a tour around the museum: at Beeldhouwersstraat 22, you can see a beau-tiful façade in art nouveau from 1902, in the Bouwmeestersstraat you can see the main, monumental synagogue of the Israeli Congre-gation, on the corner of Schildersstraat and Plaatsnijdersstraat, you can admire the 'The Five Continents' house cluster, also known as 't Bootje and the unique façade of the Liberaal Volkshuis can be found at Volksstraat 40.

25 DE SCHELDEKAAIEN

Neem je tijd voor de laatste rechte lijn van de fietsroute, want hier vind je talloze prachtige staaltjes architectuur. Grote terrassen en raampartijen bieden de appartementen en woningen een uniek zicht over de Schelde.

Tip: neem op de Sint-Jansvliet de Sint-Annatun-nel naar Linkeroever. De tunnel dateert uit 1930 en ademt met zijn authentieke roltrappen de sfeer uit van toen. Geniet aan de andere kant van de Schelde van een spectaculair uitzicht op de Antwerpse skyline. Mooier kan je fietstocht niet eindigen!

Tip van Noortje: Gebruik de panoramafunctie van je smartphone om de volledige skyline van Antwerpen op één beeld te krijgen.

THE SCHELDT QUAYS Take your time for the last straight of the cycle route, because here you will find countless beautiful architectural examples. Large terraces and windows offer the apartments and houses here a unique view over the Scheldt.

Tip: take the Sint-Anna tunnel on the Sint-Jans-vliet to the Left Bank. The tunnel dates from 1930 and its authentic escalators and other elements exude the atmosphere of that time. Enjoy spectacular views of the Antwerp skyline on the other bank of the Scheldt. There isn't a more beautiful place to end your bike tour!
