Wooing the voting public

Sabi nga sa ingles, “it’s still yourneck!”

THE maximum campaignexpenditure for a presidentialcandidate, based on the law oncampaign spending, is limitedto only P500 million, or P10 pervoter.

Some candidates can ma-nipulate this expenditure ceil-ing by reasoning out that theygot discounts and all, but oneof the country’s presidentialcandidate already reached P2billion for advertisementsalone prior to the campaignseason. Is that insane or what?

The Philippine Center forInvestigative Journalism saidif only the law on campaignspending and political adver-tising were imposed before theofficial campaign period beganlast week, one presidentialcandidate would have alreadyoverspent in the past threemonths alone.

This candidate leads themost candidates in expendi-tures, even as he joins four oth-ers who would have exceededthe broadcast limit for TV.

Aquino also called in Com-mission on Elections to an-nounce whether forthcomingpolls will be reverted to manualcounting in the wake of loom-ing power failure in variousparts of the country and theproposed withdrawal of tele-communications companiesearlier tapped to transmit pollresults.

COMELEC JUNKSGOMA CANDIDACY

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) has disqualifiedactor Richard Gomez from running for a Congressional seatin the 4th district of Ormoc City.

The Comelec First Division, inan eight-page resolution, grantedthe petition of BuenaventuraJuntilla who asked to disallowGomez to run for a seat in theHouse of Representatives for lackof residency requirements.

The First Division also said theactor failed to prove that he al-ready abandoned his Manila resi-dence despite being a registeredvoter in Ormoc City.

“In an instant case, the re-spondent has not presented suf-ficient proof that would establishhis ties to Ormoc City. The ab-sence of such ties indicates hislack of intention to stay perma-

nently in the said locality,” saidthe resolution.

The decision further disclosedthat Gomez and his wife, LucyTorres-Gomez, continue to prac-tice their profession in Manila;that he is still doing business inManila and that he and his fam-ily continue to stay in their housein Colgate St., East Greenhills inSan Juan City.

Last December, Juntilla, aformer barangay chairman inOrmoc, questioned the residencyof Gomez in Ormoc.

The actor is running under theLiberal Party (LP) in the May 10polls. Annette Vergel

Dick Gordon vows to end RP hunger problemBAGUMBAYAN Party presidential

bet Dick Gordon stated that once elected,he will prioritize to address the alarm-ing hunger problem in the country.

Gordon’s remarks were issued atthe Philippine Chamber of Commerceand Industry (PCCI) Presidential Fo-rum in Pasay City yesterday.

Gordon authored the Food Dona-tion Act of 2009, which was signed intolaw on November 25, 2009 (RepublicAct No. 9803), and addresses the pov-

erty issue in the country and bringsback dignity to the poor through en-couraging wholesome food donationsto those in need. According to theNational Statistics Coordination Board(NSCB), 16 million Filipinos live be-low the food or subsistence threshold.

“Because of greedy politicians, ourchildren go to bed hungry while theirparents spend sleepless nights won-dering where their next meal will comefrom. While the corrupt grow rich,

our children grow hungry,” said DickGordon. “Passing the Food Dona-tion Act is a stopgap measure to al-leviate the food insecurity too manyFilipinos experience.

Ending the corruption that takesthe food out of people’s mouths, cre-ating family-wage jobs, and strength-ening our agriculture industry willprovide the more permanent solutionto ensuring that every child eats ad-equately.”

DFA implements quick, hi-tech ePassport services in new buildingFOREIGN Affairs Secretary Alberto

G. Romulo said the realization of adream came into fruition with theimplementation of the ePassport andthe turnover of the new Departmentof Foreign Affairs consular building.

“It is part of our dream for the Fili-pino people to have a world-classpassport and consular services. Wehave done it through the MachineReadable Passport (MRP) and theePassport, and now the dream is com-plete with the new DFA-Office of Con-

sular Affairs (DFA-OCA) building,”Romulo said during the turnover cer-emonies yesterday morning.

According to the Foreign Secretary, before, Filipinos had to bear the em-barrassment and humiliation of beingshunted aside in immigration queuesand questioned lengthily on the ve-racity of their identities and their pass-ports, which caused many delays forthe Filipino travelers.

”In this intelligent building, in-stead of sweltering heat, our consu-

lar clients will be greeted with coolair at the moment they enter ourdoors.

Instead of monobloc chairs, theywill wait their turn sitting on ergo-nomically-designed stainless steelbenches. Instead of long queues, theycan shorten their wait by accessingour online appointment system. In-stead of going from building to build-ing, they only need to move fromground to second floor,” he added.

Tutuban Mall eyes makeover for Tondo streetchildenTHE fastest-growing shopping hub

in downtown Manila, Tutuban Mall, will celebrate its 21st anniversary dif-ferently. This time, it will give backsomething to the community it has longconsidered as its home via a specialproject for the street children ofTondo—a complete hygiene makeover.

On February 21, 2010, around 100street children from the differentbaranggays within the immediateperimeter of the mall will get a freemakeover courtesy of some of themall’s kind-hearted tenants, who haveall volunteered to support this nobleyet unique corporate social responsi-bility (CSR) effort by the mall’s man-agement.

Dubbed “Paliguan ang BatangBayan sa Tutuban,” the project, which will start from 9 a.m. up to 12noon and will be held at TutubanMall’s Food Street section, isdeemed as a fitting follow-up to itssuccessful feeding program for streetchildren held last December 18,2009. This time, however, the streetchildren will be bathed, dressed up,and then treated to a sumptuousmeal afterwards.

As soon as the kids are bathed anddressed up in clothes provided byBench, Napoleon and Encarnacion/

Cut Salon, they will then proceed tothe salon of popular beauty stylist JesiMendez where they will be given ahaircut. This will be followed by ahearty and delicious meal brought tothe mall’s Food Street area courtesyof Jollibee. But that’s not all. Beforegoing home, the kids will have a chanceto exchange gift stubs given to themearlier in the day where they can getexciting gift packs courtesy of PhericaToys, Andeng’s Toys and Flowers Inc.,and Get Laud.

“For this year ’s anniversary, wewanted something different yet shouldhave the same impact of our pastprojects, especially for children, whoare closest to Tutuban Mall’s hearts. We believe that, considering the ar-eas where these children came fromand the kind of socio-economic con-ditions their families are in, personalhygiene would surely be a least pri-ority. I’m sure this would be some-thing they’d look forward to, and I’msure they’d go home smiling sincethey will look clean, nice—and evensmell better—in front of their parentsand loved ones,” explains BernardoEspiritu, General Manager of TutubanMall.

Tutuban Mall’s “Paliguan angBatang Bayan sa Tutuban” is sup-

ported by Jollibee, Jesi Mendez Sa-lon, Encarnacion/Cut Salon, Bench,Napoleon, Pherica Toys, Andeng’sToys and Flowers Inc., and Get Laud.

Tutuban Mall is located along his-toric C. M. Recto Avenue at the Phil-ippine National Railways com-pound in downtown Manila. Bothan icon and a landmark in the famedDivisoria shopping district, the mallattracts some 200,000 customersdaily. It has seven interconnectedbuildings with more or less 2,000tenants, while its year-round, all-season Tutuban Night Market, which continues to pack crowdsbecause of its various offerings ofaffordable yet quality goods fromgarments and home furnishings tofood, has become THE shopping areaof choice for most Manilans and evenshoppers from other areas of MetroManila.

Aside from its competitive prices,Tutuban Mall has become a favoriteshopping destination for it has ad-equate parking and ample lightingand security that will truly delightshoppers. Its wide shopping lanesprovide convenient and hassle-freeshopping and of course, its qualityand wallet-friendly items ensurevalue for one’s hard-earned money.

Our Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadThe recent global financial crisis caused

people to pay closer attention to their creditreport. When credit was easy to get, some peoplebecame careless about how they used it. Theydidn’t bother to save for what they wanted;they just borrowed. Being in debt was no bigdeal. But in a crisis, that is no longer the case.Having good credit is suddenly very impor-tant.

After an advertisement for a credit repairservice, a local newscaster said, “Credit re-pair isn’t something you can buy; it’s some-thing you have to work for.”

The same principle applies to the credibil-ity of our lives. We can’t buy it; it’s some-thing we have to work for. We may be able to“borrow” credibility for a while by associat-ing ourselves with credible people, but sooneror later we will need our own.

Credibility has to do with the ability toelicit belief. The reason it’s essential for Chris-tians is that our lives affect God’s reputation(1 Peter 2:12). When we call ourselves byChrist’s name, His reputation is tied to ours.If people have reason not to believe us, theymay not believe God.

The way to earn credibility is to live hon-orably. Then others will believe and glorifyGod. — Julie Ackerman Link

For Further StudyLook at these Scriptures about Christ’s life:Matthew 9:10-13; 20:28; Luke 6:12. How

can you live the way He did?If we take care of our character, our repu-

tation will take care of itself.

“This is in line with the citygovernment’s efforts to bringthe best possible service toValenzuelanos,” MayorSherwin T. Gatchalian said.

He added that the citygovernment’s decision totransform the old municipalcenter into Valenzuela’s jus-tice center was prompted byreports that the building inBarangay Karuhatan hous-ing the courts is already oldand dilapidated and in the

verge of collapse. In addition, its location is

too far from the city govern-ment center where the Bureauof Jail Management and Pe-nology (BJMP), police head-quarters and the prosecutor’soffice are located.

Renovation cost approxi-mately P35 million. The oldbuilding was given a modernmakeover by the CityEngineer’s Office. The woodeninterior walls were torn downand replaced with glass tomatch the finance and execu-tive building’s interiors.

DTI urges Prius owners to availof Toyota’s special service

TRADE Secretary Peter B.Favila of the Department of Tradeand Industry (DTI) has urgedowners of the Toyota Prius tobring the vehicles back to theirdealers to have them checked.

The special service is part ofToyota’s global product recall onvarious car models with defectsincluding its hybrid Prius andLexus models.

Toyota Motor Philippines(TMP) has announced it installa modified ABS managementprogram on Prius that have beensold in the market. This will bedone at no cost to the owner.

Toyota noted a slight delay inbrake reaction when driving thevehicle over certain road condi-tions while lightly applying the

brakes. To ensure safety of its custom-

ers, the global company has de-cided to conduct the recall cam-paign for the Prius models.

“We are pleased that TMP hastaken the initiative of contactingtheir customers and perform therequired repair at no cost to cus-tomers,” said Favila.

Mistakes that occur in themanufacture of products posedanger to the health and safetyof the consuming public.

When similar incidents occurin different people when using aspecific product, this could be anindication that there is a flaw inits production, and when thishappens, a product recall may benecessary.

Free condoms part ofanti-HIV/AIDS campaign – DOHTHE Department of Health

(DOH) clarified that the condomsgiven last Valentine’s Day week-end were not meant to promoteartificial contraception, but rathera reminder to the public of theimportance of responsible sexualbehavior in combating the threatof HIV/AIDS.

The DOH, in a statment, saidthe “Ingat Lagi, My Valentinecampaign,” which was held lastFebruary 13 at the DangwaFlower Market in Manila hasdrawn criticism from the Catho-lic Church for supposedly being“immoral”.

The health agency reiteratedthe words of Deputy Presiden-tial Spokesman Ricardo Saludowho explained that the condomdistribution should not be con-

strued as a signal that the gov-ernment is advocating sexual li-centiousness.

“The free condoms were just atool of a creative campaign aimedat promoting awareness on HIV/AIDS prevention at a most oppor-tune time – Valentine’s Day,” itsaid.

The DOH emphasized the factthat it was not pushing condomuse as the exclusive method tocombat HIV/AIDS, as some crit-ics of the Ingat Lagi campaignaccused, and defended the ac-tivity as just part of the three-point campaign to combat HIV/AIDS known by the acronymABC – A for “abstinence fromsex”; B for “be faithful to yourpartner” and C for “condomuse”.

Pacquiao zooms to top of pay-per-viewFILIPINO boxing icon Manny

Pacquiao boxed his way to the pound-for-pound king ladder but that is notabout it, he is now rising as the newblockbuster king in the pay-per-viewsector of the fighting world.

The November welterweight titlefight between Pacquiao (50-3, 38 KO’s)and Puerto Rican superstar MiguelCotto (34-2, 27 KO’s) was the top draw-ing boxing Pay-Per-View of the yearaccording to yahoo.com.

The fight fell behind the UltimateFighting Championship’s “UFC: 100”extravaganza for top drawing PPVhonors of the year. Pacquiao - Cottowas purchased in 1.4 million homeswhile the UFC card drew 1.6 millionPPV buys.

Trailing behind both PPV’s was thecomeback of Floyd Mayweather (40-0, 25 KO’s) in September when heunanimously outpointed lightweightchampion Juan Manuel Marquez (50-

5-1, 37 KO’s). That PPV, supportedby a spectacular undercard featur-ing a lightweight title betweenMichael Katsidis vs. VicenteEscobedo and Chris John vs. RockyJuarez, drew 1.2 million PPV buys.Mayweather - Marquez was alsoshown in hundreds of movietheater ’s across the United States.Figures for theater showings of thefight count towards closed circuitsales, not PPV buys.

Jimbo Aquino, Calvin Abueva andRonald Pascual came through with clutchplays as the 25ers won their maiden gameagainst a team that finished runner-up inthe Unity Cup last year.

A win did not only surprise PBLhabitués but also team owner Edwin Chuaand team manager Oliver Gianan, whosaid before the game that they would walkout in the event Ascof Lagundi would takea huge lead early in the first half.

“I thought we had to walk out, but wewere able to win in our first outing,” saidGianan.

But coach Ato Agustin, a former MVPin the PBA, was all calm, knowing fullywell the character and heart of players, especially Abueva.

The 6-foot-4 Abueva had 13 points butthe hustle and aggressiveness he providedin both ends of the court proved too muchfor the Cough Busters to handle.
