MEDITERAN I

Još od kraja 70-tih godina prošlog vijeka, kada se pojavio kao član „Generacije 9”, Branislav Sekulić se izdvojio kao snažna individua, sa izraženom dozom intimizma i autentičnosti. Radoznao po prirodi, sticao je najraznovrsnija znanja i postepeno dolazio do misaono zaokruženih slikarskih rješenja, polazeći od hiperrealizma u najranijoj fazi stvaralaštva, do slikarskih rješenja bliskih nadrealizmu i metafizičkom slikarstvu, u svom zrelom umjetničkom dobu.

Njegove nove slike iz ciklusa „Mediteran I ” čudesni su pejzaži viđeni okom umjetnika posebne imaginacije. Rađeni u tehnici gvaš na papiru i ulje na platnu, predstavljaju zaokruženu, cjelovitu vizuelnu predstavu o mediteranskom predjelu i crnogorskom pejzažu i čine logičan nastavak prethodnog ciklusa Mediteran. Treperavi svijet pejzaža, njihova ljepota, Boka, slan i modar miris mora, neobično rastinje, mediteranska toplina, Bjelopavlići, ljubav prema zavičaju, prožeti nadrealnim i metafizičkim doživljajem prirode, pomiješani sa dubokom imaginacijom i umjetnikovim sjećanjem na njih, čine tematsku odrednicu i polazište njegovih najnovijih radova.

U ovom ciklusu, slikar nam nudi sjećanja na predjele koji su davno viđeni, zaboravljeni pa nanovo izmaštani. Njegovom vještom rukom, bogatim koloritom i upotrebom intimnih simbola njemu važnih predmeta iz prošlosti i sadašnjosti koje pažljivo bira i unosi u sliku, prostori postaju sasvim izmijenjeni i iznova konstruisani. Pejzaži su oživljeni figurama, asocijativnim simbolima, različitim motivima koji slobodno lebde u prostoru, što slike boji atmosferom tajanstvenosti, mističnosti i natprirodnog mira. Realno i nerealno se prepliću, a slika dobija izrazito poetski karakter. Predjelom zasićenim mirisom mediteranskog bilja, slike nas vraćaju u trenutke djetinjstva, bezbrižnosti, događaja koji skriveni leže negdje duboko potisnuti u podsvijesti.

Sekulićevo slikarstvo je znalačko u poznavanju likovnih zahtjeva. Njegov likovni postupak je veoma kompleksan. Posebnu pažnju poklanja kompozicionom građenju slike, koristeći često neobična rješenja. Kombinovanjem slobodne perspektive, horizontalnim nizanjem planova, intimnih simbola, figura, bogatim koloritom i gotovo lirskom osjećajnošću, gradi atmosferu i dočarava razigrani, treperavi svijet Mediterana. Forme nastaju iz boje, mrlje, kaplje, koju nanosi najčešće sitnim nanosima, katkada i poentilističkom tehnikom. Upotrebom tonskih paleta smeđe, oker, do zanimljive orkestracije plavog i ružičastog, koje se pretapa u boju lavande, kombinuje sa tamnozelenom i bijelom oživljavajući svoje intimne pejzaže.

Banetovi pejzaži, poetični, bajkoviti, nestvarno lijepi, u izmaglicama, kontrastima svijetla i sjenke, toplim bojama djetinjstva i Mediterana, ostavljaju bezbroj mogućnosti za različite doživljaje i čitanje, ne ostavljajući posmatrača ravnodušnim.

THE MEDITERRANEAN I

Since the end of the 1970’s, the time he appeared as a member of “Generation 9”, Branislav Sekulic stood out as a strong individual with a pronounced touch of intimism and authenticity. Curious by nature, he gained the most diverse knowledge and gradually reached reflectively rounded off painting solutions, starting from Hyperrealism in the earliest stages of his creation to other visual solutions close to Surrealism and metaphysical painting in his mature artistic period.

His new paintings from the series “The Mediterranean I” are miraculous landscapes as seen through the eye of an artist with a special imagination. Made in the techniques of gouache on paper and oil on canvas, they present a complete visual representation of the Mediterranean area and Montenegrin landscape thus forming a logical continuation of the previous series “The Mediterranean”. The vibrant world of landscapes, their beauty, Boka, the salty and blue smell of the sea, the unusual vegetation, the Mediterranean warmth, the Bjelopavlici region, the love of homeland imbued with surreal and metaphysical experience of nature, combined with a deep imagination and the artist’s memory of them constitute the thematic entry and the starting point of his latest works.

In this series the painter offers us memories of the areas that have been seen a long time ago, areas forgotten and then re-imagined again. Spaces become completely changed and re-constructed by his skilful hand, rich colours and the use of personal symbols of objects from the past and present that are important for him and which he carefully selects and introduces into the painting. The landscapes are animated with figures, associative symbols, different motifs that float freely in space – this introduces an atmosphere of mysteriousness, mysticism and supernatural peace into the paintings. The real and the unreal are intertwined while the painting acquires an exceptionally poetic character. The landscape on these paintings, saturated with the scent of Mediterranean herbs, takes us back to childhood moments, a carefree mood and events that lie hidden somewhere deeply suppressed in the subconscious.

Sekulic’s art of painting is masterly in the knowledge of fine art requirements. His fine art procedure is very complex. He pays particular attention to the compositional construction of the painting, often using unusual solutions. By combining free perspective, horizontal sequencing of plans, personal symbols, figures, rich colours and almost lyrical sensibility he builds up the atmosphere and evokes a playful, vibrant world of the Mediterranean. Forms are created from paint, stains, drops which he usually applies in tiny strokes, sometimes in pointillist technique. He revives his intimistic landscapes by using tonal palettes of brown, ochre and an interesting orchestration of blue and pink that blends into a lavender purple and is combined with the dark green and white.

Bane’s landscapes - poetic, romantic, fairytale-like, untruly beautiful, in mists, contrasts of light and shadow, warm colours of childhood and the Mediterranean leave countless opportunities for different experiences and reading while not leaving the viewer indifferent.

HOLOGRAMSKA SLIKA JADRANA

.....Osobit je doživljaj Jadrana vidjeti poput hologramske slike, s druge strane naočala. Ta ista ali različita naša i njegova stvarnost rezultira igru prepoznavanja, pogađanja i poistovjećivanja gledatelja i slikara. Znajući da se ovaj slikarski genij "budi" sredinom dvadesetog stoljeća, pretpostavljamo zadatosti estetike njegova vremena. Samospoznajom, kroz akademsko slikarsko naobraženje u društvenom i umjetničkom ozračju beogradske akademije likovnih umjetnosti kasnih sedamdesetih, detektira suvremen umjetnički razvoj Branislava Sekulića s tek neznatnim odmakom od istovremenih svjetskih trendova.

Poglavit je u tim danima njegova umjetničkog stasanja objektivizirani hiperrealizam, koji ipak ne gaji živo, već naprotiv prezentira kompozicijski, donekle ishitrene vizure modernog društva svodeći ih na neživ kazališni rekvizitorij koji sam po sebi definira odnose indiferencijom spram svakodnevlja. To razdoblje pripadanja glasovitoj "Generaciji 9" možemo razlučiti kao odrastanje i uzimanje stava spram svih nebrojenih mogućnosti koje nudi mladost. Od te borbe pristupa figuracijom do apstrahiranja sažeo je slikar Branislav Sekulić svoje poglede spram stvarnog jadranskog krajobraza kroz brižljivo sročen likovni svijet tajnovitih simbola i elemente nadrealističkog fokusiranja segmenata kojima ne definira funkciju nego ih naprotiv nudi kao točku spoticanja, promišljanja, kontemplacije u maniri metafizičkih scena dechirikovske uzburkane nepomičnosti.

Često, izraženim nizanjem planova kompozicije po vertikali, slikar kao da prigrljuje davno zaboravljenu slikarsku tradiciju kulture u kojoj stvara, naglašenu prirodnim zadatostima kotorskog primorja. Predodredivši se eklektičkom fuzijom prethodnih iskustava, slikar zrelog habitusa, nudi sijaset varijacija u konstanti bezvremenog bilježenja "svoje stvarnosti". Na njegovim gvaševima možemo zamjetiti bravuroznost predrenesansne slikarske tehnike i nemogućnosti odsustva u likovnoj tehnologiji. Stvarajući upravo tako stvarno, bojom i divizionističkim njezinim tretmanom plohe zaključuje se osobitost žarka neugasla sunca, koje bolnom žegom refleksija stvara, u "stvarnom krajobrazu", izliku pričinjenja, davši tako motivima, naizgled figuraciji lišenoj mogućnosti drugačijeg shvaćanja, magijski, skoro religijski prizvuk.

U modernu svijetu zarazne površnost, zagonetnost nepatvorena ambijenta garantira i u budućim slikarskim osvarenjima autora, erudiciju koja se od gledatelja pretpostavlja da bi sliku čitao te iz nje baštinio ne samo vizualni podražaj estetikom likovnog, već tražeći neizrečeno tek otvoreno pitanje "slikopisca" Branislava Sekulića kao poziv na diskusiju. Potrebiti smo dijaloga, riječi i nesuglasja koje tek u različitosti stvara suglasje, mukom dokazivanja stavova i ideala, veličanstvenu harmoniju.

A HOLOGRAPHIC IMAGE OF THE ADRIATIC

..... It is a unique experience to see the Adriatic as a holographic image, on the other side of the glasses. That same but different, our and his reality results in a game of recognition, guessing and identification of the viewer and the artist. Knowing that this painting genius “woke up” in the mid-twentieth century we can assume the given aesthetics of his time. Through self-knowledge, through academic painting education in the social and artistic climate of the Belgrade Academy of Fine Arts of the late seventies, we perceive the contemporary artistic development of Branislav Sekulic, which is only a slightly detached from simultaneous global trends.

Objectified Hyperrealism is mainly present in those days of his artistic maturing; however, he does not foster it actively but rather presents compositionally somewhat hasty perspectives of modern society, reducing them to non-living theatre props which define relations as indifference toward everyday life. That period of belonging to the renowned “Generation 9” could be distinguished as growing up and taking a stand towards all the countless possibilities offered by youth. Out of that struggle - an approach to figuration leading to abstraction, the painter Branislav Sekulic summarized his views according to the real Adriatic landscape through a carefully worded visual world of mysterious symbols and elements of surrealist focusing of segments. By doing this he does not define the function, but on the contrary, offers them as a point of stumbling, reflection and contemplation in the manner of metaphysical scenes of a de Chirico-like agitated stillness.

Often, by an expressive lining-up of composition plans vertically, it appears as if the painter embraces a long-forgotten tradition of visual culture in which he is creating and which is accentuated by the natural particularities of the Kotor coastline. Being predetermined by the eclectic fusion of his past experiences, the painter of a mature status offers a multitude of variations in the constant of timeless recording of “his reality”. On his gouaches we can note the virtuosity of a pre-Renaissance painting technique and the inability of absence in art technology. When creating so realistically, using colour and a pointillist subtle treatment of surface the peculiarity of the fervent unquenchable sun is induced; through the painful heat of reflection it produces, in a “real landscape”, a pretext for illusion giving thus the motives - seemingly a figuration devoid of possibilities of a different understanding - a magical, almost religious undertone.

In the modern world of infectious superficiality, the mystery of a genuine environment guarantees, in the author’s future painting achievements, an erudition that is assumed in the viewer so as to read the painting and inherit from it not only a visual stimulus through the aesthetics of visual, but to seek for the unspoken, just opened question by the “painting writer” Branislav Sekulic as an invitation for discussion. We are in need of dialogue, words and disagreement which only in diversity creates harmony and through pain of proofing attitudes and ideals - a magnificent harmony.

Branislav Bane Sekulić je rođen 1952. godine u Prokuplju. Završio je Fakultet likovnih umjetnosti u Beogradu, 1978. godine, odsjek slikarstva, u klasi profesora Milana Kečića, gdje je i magistrirao 1980, u klasi profesora Aleksandra Lukovića. Od 1981-1984. godine radi u Domu omladine “Budo Tomović” u Titogradu, kao urednik likovnog programa. Pored vođenja galerije osnovao je Školu likovnog vaspitanja u Domu omladine. Redovni je profesor na Fakultetu likovnih umjetnosti na Cetinju, na predmetu slikarstvo. Bio je potpredsjednik ULUCG-a, od 1995 -2001. godine i dekan Fakulteta likovnih umjetnosti na Cetinju. Pripadao je grupi “Generacija 9”. Živi i stvara u Podgorici.

Branislav Bane Sekulic was born in 1952 in Prokuplje. He graduated at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade in 1978, Department of Painting, under Professor Milan Kecic, where he also obtained his master’s degree in 1980, under Professor Aleksandar Lukovic. From 1981 to1984 he worked at the Youth Centre “Budo Tomovic” in Titograd, as editor of visual art programmes and founder of the School of visual arts. He is professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cetinje, for the subject Painting. He was vice president of the Association of Fine Artists of Montenegro from 1995 -2001and the Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cetinje. He was member of the group “Generation 9”. He lives and works in Podgorica.
