Many experienced engineers lamented that there were no reliable pumps available in the market place which could successfully handle the Low NPSHA, gas/liquid mixture, low viscosity and explosive nature of these fluids. Ironically, most plant engineers would immediately reject the proposal on magnetically driven pumps which were frequently synonymous with poor reliability and costly failures,” Said Mr. Fong, Formosa Rotating Equipment Specialist. However, with the latest development and breakthrough in combination side channel pumps by M Pumps, solutions are now available for plant engineers to tackle these challenges posed by the volatile fluids in the Petrochemical Industry. Traditionally VS6, Vertical Multistages, Doublecasing, Vertically Suspended Centrifugal Pumps are used for transferring and unloading Isobutylene in the tank farm. The main reason is to tackle the low NPSHA by lowering the pump head into the ground to increase the NPSHA against the Pump’s NPSHR. The multistage impellers are to produce high pressure needed to deliver the fluid into the process. However, the design, installation, maintenance and the mechanical seal system are complicated and costly for a VS6 Pump. The delivery lead time could also take up to 12 months. Facing with the high cost, design challenges and a long lead time for acquiring VS6 pumps for the project, the FSRC project team had made an unprecedented decision to install M Pumps; combination multistage side channel pumps, SC MAGM series to address the pumping of Isobutylene in the tank farm. The distinctive features of SC MAGM series of combination side channel pumps are as follow: 1) The SC MAGM series is magnetically driven sealless pumps. That means these pumps are leakfree without the needs of any mechanical seal and it supporting sealing system.     1) TheSCMAGMseriesismagneticallydrivenseallesspumps.Thatmeansthesepumpsareleakfreewithouttheneedsofanymechanicalsealanditsupportingsealingsystem.

    3) TheSCMAGMseriesofpumpsismanufacturedinaccordancewithAPI685,Doublecasing,centrelinemountedwithmaximumworkingpressureof50BarG.Thatmeansthesepumpsarebuiltwithgreatreliabilityandperformance.

    4) TheSCMAGMseriesofpumpsisselfpriming,abilitytohandleupto50%liquid/Gasmixture.ArmedwithfirststagelowNPSHRimpellerandmultistageperipheralimpellermeanthesepumpscanachieveanNPSHRaslowas0.3meter.Theinherentselfbalanceoftheperipheralimpellerenablesthesepumpstoresistcavitationduringanunfavorableprocessconditions.

    5) TheSCMAGMseriesofpumpsisbuiltwithtwoconfinedgasketswhichgreatlyreducesthepotentialleakedpointsandenhancesthesafetyoftheplantwhenpumpinghighlyexplosiveandflammablefluids.

    Thecombinationmultistagesidechannelpumps,SCMAGMseries,offereddistinctadvantagesagainstVS6asfollow:

    1) ByinstallingSCMAGM,thetotalcostsofequipmentprocurement,installationandfuturemaintenancearegreatlyreducedascomparewithVS6.

    2) TheinstallationissimplifiedforSCMAGMwhichjustplacedhorizontallyonthefoundationascomparetoVS6inwhichaholemustbedugonthegroundtoaccommodatetheverticallysuspendedpumpsalongwithitscaisson.
