‘As safe as houses’ - a phrase that we often hear to reflect something that is beyond risk and a solid investment. In thelast few years the national media would have us believe that the property market is no longer ‘as safe as houses’. Buthow much of this is scaremongering to make a good story, and how much of it is actually based in truth.

Below is a table of house values across the whole of the UK including Scotland, which shows price movements overthe past 35 years, moving from an average house price (adjusted to take into account inflation) in 1975 of £75,188 tothe current level of £168,719. We can see from the graph that there has been a general movement upward with occa-sional periods of falling prices, most notably in the period 1990 to 1995, and then 2007 to the present time. But it canbe seen that these periods are generally temporary and in the past growth has returned relatively quickly.

So what has been happening in Scotland? In the graph to the right we see that averagehouse prices in Scotland overall have risenfrom approximately £75,000 at thebeginning of 2000 to approximately£162,000 at the end of June 2010.

More regionally still, in 2010 it now appearsthat Glasgow, Edinburgh and the CentralBelt have now begun moving into a morestable growth situation with the rest ofScotland (including the North moregenerally and the Moray Firth Coast in par-ticular) hot on their heels (source LloydsTSB Scotland).

Property professionals in the Moray Firthregion have reported increased levels ofsales activity generally, with prices startingto firm up.

If you are a member of a church not listed here please email us thedetails and we will print this in future issues.

As a leader in the Church, it is oftenvery easy to get totally involved withthe people in the Church, and to avery large degree, disregard thepeople outwith the Church. Butsomething happened exactly a yearago that has changed our perspec-tives of what being a Christian is allabout.

A young man came into our Churchlooking for help in regards to gettingoff hard drugs. At the time, we wereunqualified to help him, but we de-termined to set the ball rolling insetting up a team of people whocould offer help and support topeople with addictions.

Just over 3 months ago, we finallybegan this service along with TeenChallenge. Since then, we have seena 36 year old woman and a 27 yearold man go into rehab. It is only thestart of a journey for them both but atleast they have begun.

A man commented that this was justa drop in the ocean, compared to theextent of the drugs problem, but wastold the following story.

After a bad overnight storm, it wasfound that thousands of starfish hadbeen washed up on the beach. Asthe sun started to rise, the starfish, being unable to help themselves, faced certain destruction. An old mansaw their plight and began to pickthem up and throw them into the sea.

An observer asked the man, “Whatpossible difference do you think youare going to make?” As he picked upa starfish and threw it into the sea, hesaid to the observer, “Well, I made adifference to that particular one.”

This reminded me of the Scripture inMatthew 18:12-14 where Jesus wastelling His disciples, “What do youthink? If a man owns a hundredsheep, and one of them wanders

away, will he not leave the ninety-nineon the hills and go to look for the onethat wandered off? And if he finds it,I tell you the truth, he is happier aboutthat one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. In thesame way your Father in heaven isnot willing that any of these little onesshould be lost.”

And this is really where the Churchshould be, out looking for the sheepthat are lost. Jesus cares for the lost, the lonely, the hurting and the oneswho have never known a shepherd. He is the true Shepherd, and He callsus to care for and to feed His sheep.

How can we not respond to such aloving Father?

Rev. John CoppardRiverside Christian Church,Buckie.

At Knockomie, we pride ourselves on using the finestlocal produce and try to source as much of our food fromlocal suppliers. Macbeth's Butchers has supplied Knockomiewith their quality meats for 23 years. The Feather Blade cutof meat that we have used is a lesser known cut from theshoulder of the beast, however is one of the tastiest and Iwould say outshines fillet in comparison of flavour. FeatherBlades are available from good local butchers like Macbethsor do ask at your local supermarket butcher/meat counter, ifthey don't have this do ask for a stewing steak such asBrisket.

Ingredients (feeds two)

2 Featherblade Steaks (each weighing 250grms)Half A Celeriac (Roughly chopped)Half an onion roughly choppedTwo Carrots (roughly chopped)Half Bottle Cheap Red WineSix Pink PeppercornsTwo Sprigs Fresh Thyme (or one sprig Rosemary) Two Bay Leaves Beef Stock (250ml) 25ml Benromach 10 year Old WhiskyOne Teaspoon Creamed Horseradish Butter to tasteCream to taste6 Large Good Quality Mashing Potatoes (Maris Piper are ideal)

Method - Feather Blade Steaks

Season Feather Blades with salt then seal in hot oil ina frying/sautee pan, then put in roasting tray, oven proofcontainer with lid or slow cooker with the Red wine, pep-percorns, thyme (or Rosemary) and bay leaves. Make suresteaks are covered by liquid and, if you need to, add somewater then cover tightly with tin foil. Cook at 180°C / GasMark 5 for 2½ hours or until tender. After 1½ hours add therustic vegetables and cook for remaining hour.

Take out the feather blades then pass liquid through asieve, reduce liquid by half and thicken with a touch of flourand feather blade juices, Add some Benromach 10 year OldWhisky (to taste). Pour over the beef and vegetables andserve with Creamy Horseradish Mash.

Method - Creamy Mashed Potatoes

Cook your potatoes either in water (or in the oven withtheir skins on - once cooked spoon out the potato flesh) ordrain well and then mash with either a masher or pressthrough a sieve (a sieve will be hard work but is worth it).Season and add butter, cream and Horseradish to taste - Ilike to add a good bit of cream and butter as these are achefs best friend !

After a very busy August at Knockomie we come into anexciting new season for food with a lot of game coming intoseason. You will be likely to see on my menus over thecoming months, Guinea Fowl, Partridge, Pheasant, and myfavourite Venison just to mention a few. Also in season issome lovely seafood including, Sea bass, Squid, Halibut,Scallops, Lemon Sole, and my favourite Monkfish will allmake an appearance on the menus.

In the vegetable and fruit corner, as well as our edibleflowers and fantastic micro herbs (supplied by Speyfruits ofElgin) there will be some lovely fresh herbs, also some,Kale, Parsnips, Pumpkins, Spinach, Leeks and ButternutSquash just a few fantastic and tasty things that will be attheir best!

As always we look forward to welcoming you to Knockomie.

The Scottish Parliamentis in summer recessallowing me to catch upon a range of con-stituency visits andsurgery tours. I also get

the time to visit the dozens of summerfetes and shows in Moray and catch upwith my constituents in a moreinformal setting. I take my hat off tothe volunteers that run these eventsand keep the community spirit alive. My young sons probably enjoy theseevents even more that myself becausethey get to tour Moray’s bouncy castlesand lucky dip stands! I also find that Iam a lot luckier when I get my sons topick the tombola tickets and so far theyhave won me sparkling wine andvarious tins of soup. I am hoping formore of the former because my kitchencupboard is already overflowing withsoup.

I was lucky enough to getalong to Speyfest inFochabers for somefantastic music frommusicians who had

travelled from near and far, as had theaudience. The atmosphere was greatwith some great stories being swappedin between the lively foot-tappingefforts of the musicians. For me the highlight was CalumStewart opening for Capercaille. It wasgreat to catch up with Calum who, aswell as being able to charm anaudience with phenomenal fluteplaying alongside Breton guitarmarvel Heikki Bourgault, is also aformer neighbour of mine! Celtic su-pergroup Capercaille then played witha brilliant set. They are a band I havefollowed for many years and it took meback to my previous career as a radiojournalist when I played them as thetop track on an Austrian radio showabout Scottish music. I can say withsome confidence that a great Speyfestwas had by all!
