Pastoral Letterand Church Meetings

There is no right or wrong way to lookat the past. For those who believe inGod and trust the Bible there are twohelpful ways to look back andconsider the past.

In the Old Testament Moses hadmuch to say to his people and hiswords were written in five books. Inthe fifth book he summarised histhoughts and advised his people howto make the best use of their past.Moses said “Remember how theLORD your God led you all the wayin the desert…” Deuteronomy 8:1

We also can look back andremember how God led us duringthe past years and express ourgratitude, learn from the experiences, treasure the memories, confess our

faults and be reassured that achangeless and faithful God who ledus all the way throughout our pastyears will lead us into the future.

In the New Testament Paul also wrotewords of encouragement to theChurch about how to make best useof their past. Paul said “Forgettingwhat is behind and straining towardwhat is ahead, I press on toward thegoal to win the prize for which Godhas called me heavenward in ChristJesus.” Philippians 3:13-14.

He is forgetting his past sin andfailure in the sense that it is done andsettled with, as Christ has forgivenhim. He is now able to look aheadwith confidence, to press forward, knowing that Christ has prepared a

place for him in heaven.

We can do the same - God has dealtwith our past so then we can forgetand forcefully press ahead into thefuture, knowing that our ultimate as-pirations are found not in this life butin heaven, because Christ is there. We remember the faithful leading ofGod and have a healthy memory ofHis help and at the same time weforget the past because it is over andgone and we concentrate on thefuture to make the best use of it. Re-membering and forgetting are bothuseful.

It's great to see thatsales of Scottishfood and drinkacross Scotland,England and Wales

have rocketed by 30 per cent inthe past three years. This is greatnews for producers in Speysideand throughout Moray. Despiterecent pictures of me with a largeWorld Champion MurdochBrothers pie there is no truth inthe rumour that politicians are re-sponsible for most of these sales!

As the summerapproaches I amvery much lookingforward to thesummer recess and

an opportunity to get some qualitytime in Moray away from weeklyflights or trains to and fromLondon. It is good just to be ableto get along to support localsummer events such as HighlandGames, fetes and music festivalsin a more relaxed atmospherethan the hothouse of Westminster.

®Culbin ForestHill 99 Trail

Welcome to Culbin. This is no ordinary forest andCulbin’s fragile shoreline is no ordinary coast.

The whole family can enjoy a great circular walk – thefully accessible Hill 99 Viewpoint Trail meandersthrough the quiet pine forest to a squirrels eyeviewpoint in the tree tops and this route is ideal for firsttime visitors. It will lead you along winding paths, through forest and mossy clearings. But why is itcalled Hill 99? Early foresters probably named it this,as it's Culbin’s highest dune at 99 feet. The route upto the viewpoint is well worth it. It’s a friendly, waymarked trail on good paths and suitable foreveryone. Take your time – allow a couple of hours.Relax and enjoy! Along the way, look up to life in thetree canopy and down to lush carpets of moss andlichen speckled with fungi in autumn. Look out forwood anthills and flowering plants. Try and spot ridgesof pebbles driven inland over 5000 years ago by stormand tide.

On the wayround stop atthe gravel pitponds, a greatplace where theranger leadsschool pond

dipping visits. These ponds were dug to provide asource of fresh water for birds, mammals and insects.Although manmade, all Culbin’s ponds and channelsplay a critical part in the natural balance of life here. There are coots on the main pond and a heron isknown to visit. Take a seat on the benches and relax. You can find yellow flag iris, chickweed wintergreenand there are some unusual mosses here too.

On a warm summers day a stop at the dragonfly poolsis amazing. The air is alive with birdsong and even thesound of the brilliantly coloured dragonflies rattlingtheir wings as they shimmer through the air. Lookcarefully and you may see discarded larvae cases, fixed half way up plant stems. The dragonflies emergefrom these, in the same way as butterflies, which alsothrive at Culbin.

A short detour takes you to thehidden history hub. This is asheltered corner to sit and con-template Culbin’s dramaticstory. Ancient peoples oncewandered and lived amongstthese shifting dunes and piles ofshells left over from a feastthousands of years ago can stillbe found deep in the forest.Eventually farmers settled hereeking out a living under theconstant threat of blowing sand. Uprooting themarram grass destabilised the dunes and in 1694 agreat storm caused the land to be abandoned.

Culbin is a wonderful place to walk, cycle and ride. You can spend all day here going as far as you can,but Culbin is also somewhere to enjoy losing track oftime. Why not enjoy watching the ordered world of agiant wood ant mound – with its team working andweight lifting – or oystercatchers beaks turning frombright red to brown as they feed.

It’s never been easier to find your way around. Thejunctions are numbered and marked on the map(available on site). There are other great places tostop including Sandlife and Buckie Loch so enjoy awell earned rest and decide where to head next.Culbin is a big place so make the most of your firstvisit and start with the hill 99 trail - you are bound toreturn for more!

For more information contact Rachael Jones on01466 794161.

Page 17: Buckie & Keith August 2010

Culbin is ideal for walking, with miles of paths and tracks to explore, winding among the pine covered dunes and coastline.

The Hill 99 Trail is an ideal walk for first-time visitors and takes about2-3 hours starting from the main car park at Wellhill. Along the way,you will find the dragonfly pond, a pretty pond where you canadmire brilliantly-coloured dragonflies during the summer.
