I like all of the seasons of the year.

Spring brings flowers and showers. I am so happy! I see the cherry blossoms. My

family takes many pictures.

Summer is here for sun and fun! It’s very hot! Let’s go to the pool! Let’s eat shaved

ice and be cool!

Autumn comes with friends and winds. We are so excited! We play sports! We run

under the falling leaves, too.

Winter has skating and skiing! It’s so cold! I enjoy the snow! I like to make a

snowman with a carrot nose!

Let’s have fun together all year long!

Sunflower Story (Level 2 – 142 words)

A long time ago, the Sun saw a little flower below. She was small and

brown. He liked that flower, but he didn’t know her name.

The Sun asked her, “What’s your name?”

The flower looked up and said, “I have no name, but I’m happy. You make

me feel warm. Thank you, Mr. Sun. Let’s be friends.”

The Sun said, “I want to be your friend, too. Here is my gift to you, a

crown of my rays. Catch it!”

The flower put the crown on her head. Now, she became bright yellow

with a big round crown! “Do I look pretty?” she asked.

“You look lovely,” said the Sun. Then, he gave crowns to all the flower’s

friends, too.

So now, every day the Sun shines in the sky. The bright flowers bloom

under the Sun. They are called sunflowers.

ひまわりの物語ものがたり

（レベル２- 142 語）

むかしむかし、太陽は地上ちじょう

に小さな花を見つけました。小さくて茶色い

花でした。太陽はその花のことを気に入りましたが、名前を知りませんで

した。

太陽はその花に「名前は何ていうのだい？」と、尋たず

ねました。花は空を

見上げて言いました。「私には名前がないけれど、幸せよ。あなたが私を

暖あたた

めてくれるから。ありがとう、太陽さん！友達になりましょう。」

太陽は「僕もあなたの友達になりたいです。これは僕からのプレゼントの

光の 冠かんむり

です。受け取って。」と、言いました。

花は冠を頭につけました。大きな丸い冠をつけ、花は明るい黄色になり

ました。「素敵すてき

に見えますか？」花は尋ねました。

「とても素敵ですよ。」と太陽は言い、それから太陽は花の友だちみん

なにも冠を贈おく

りました。

だから、太陽は毎日空で輝かがや

いています。太陽の下で鮮あざ

やかな花が咲い

ています。その花はひまわりと呼ばれています。

A Pioneer Railroad Builder (Level 3 – 194 words)

Many of us ride trains often. We use them to go to school and sometimes

take vacations. Train service began in Japan in the late 1800s. Did you know that

a British man helped make the first railroads here? His name was Edmund Morel.

Morel was born in London in 1840. At age 17, he entered King’s College.

He was in poor health, but he didn’t give up. Morel went to New Zealand and

Australia. He became a road engineer first. Then he went to Malaysia and helped

build railroads there.

In Japan, the Meiji government was planning a railroad, too. Morel

became very interested in this project. He took the chance and was hired as chief

engineer. His team worked on a line between the port of Yokohama and Shimbashi,

Tokyo. He was also chief on another line between Kobe and Osaka.

Morel’s work was very important, but sadly he became sick with

tuberculosis. He worked until he died in 1871 at age 30. The oldest railroad line

in Japan opened one year later. Now, there is a bronze plaque at Sakuragicho

Station in his honor. Edmund Morel was a pioneer railroad builder.

鉄道てつどう

の先駆者せんくしゃ

（パイオニア） （レベル 3 - 194 語）

私たちの多くは、よく電車に乗ります。学校に行くときや時には旅行に

行くときに電車を利用します。日本では１８００年代後半に電車の運行うんこう

が始まりました。一人のイギリス人男性が日本で最初の鉄道を作ったこ

とを知っていますか。彼の名前はエドムンド・モレルです。

モレルは 1840 年にロンドンで生まれ、17 歳でキングズカレッジに入

学しました。彼は 病弱びょうじゃく

でしたが、あきらめませんでした。モレルはニュ

ージーランドとオーストラリアに行きました。彼は最初に道路のエンジ

ニアになりました。それから彼はマレーシアに行き、そこで鉄道建設を手

伝いました。

日本では、明治政府も鉄道を計画していました。モレルはこのプロジェ

クトに非常に興味を持ちました。彼はチャンスをつかみ、チーフエンジニ

アとして雇やと

われました。モレルのチームは、横浜港―東京の新橋間の路線ろせん

に取り組みました。また、神戸―大阪間の別の路線でもチーフを務つと

The Flight of Icarus (Level 4 – 252 words)

Daedalus was a famous Greek inventor. He invented many things for the

king, who was a very selfish man.

One day, the king got angry with him. He put Daedalus and his son, Icarus,

in prison. It was in a tower on an isolated island. It would be difficult to escape,

even by sea. While Icarus was collecting feathers from seagulls, suddenly his

father had an idea.

“If I made wings with the feathers, we could fly out and escape,” Daedalus

said. So, he got some feathers and made some wings. He used wax from melted

candles to hold them together.

He told Icarus, “Son, I made some wings so we can fly up into the sky.

But please don’t fly too high near the sun. It will melt the wax and the wings will

come apart. Then, you will fall and die.”

The next day, Daedalus and his son flew out of prison. “How nice it is to

fly,” said Icarus. He enjoyed flying faster and higher! He was so happy that he

forgot his father’s words.

Soon, Icarus was flying closer to the sun and became very hot. The wax

began to melt and the wings were coming apart! He was too heavy for the weak

wings. He fell down into the sea and drowned.

Daedalus could not save his son. He felt very sad and put Icarus into a

grave on a small island. Since that time, people call that island “Icaria” because

of the sad story of Icarus.

イカロスの飛行ひこう

（レベル４ – 254 語）

ダイダロスはギリシャの有名な発明家はつめいか

でした。ダイダロスは、とてもわ

がままな国王のために多くの発明をしました。

ある時、国王はダイダロスに腹を立て、ダイダロスと息子・イカロスを

牢屋ろうや

に入れてしまいました。牢屋は海路かいろ

でも逃げるのが難しい、孤島ことう

の塔とう

の中にありました。イカロスがカモメの羽を集めているのを見て、父・ダ

イダロスはあるアイデアを思いつきました。

「羽で翼つばさ

を作ったら、この牢屋から逃げ出せるのではないだろうか」

そして、羽を集めて翼を作りました。 羽は溶と

けたろうそくの蝋ろう

を使って

つけました。

ダイダロスはイカロスに言いました 「息子よ、 空へ飛び出せるように

翼を作ったぞ。でも、太陽の近くを高く飛び過ぎないようにするのだよ。

蝋が溶け、翼がばらばらになって、落ちて死んでしまうからね。」

翌日、ダイダロスとその息子は牢屋から飛び立ちました。 「飛ぶのは

なんて楽しいのだ」と、イカロスは言いました。イカロスはより速く、そ

してより高く飛ぶのを楽しんでいました！イカロスは喜びのあまり、父

の言葉を忘れてしまいました。

すぐに、イカロスは太陽に近づき、とても熱くなりました。蝋が溶け始

め、翼がバラバラになりました！弱い翼にはイカロスは重すぎました。イ

カロスは海に落ち、溺おぼ

れて死んでしまいました。

ダイダロスは息子を救うことができませんでした。彼はとても悲しみ、

小さな島の墓にイカロスを入れました。イカロスの悲しい物語により、そ

れ以来、人々はその島を「イカリア」と呼ぶようになりました。
