It was my great honor to serve as the Chinese American Pathologists

Association (CAPA) President in 2015. It was a very busy, productive, and rewarding year in my professional career, and it certainly was a great year for CAPA! Together, we have accomplished the goals that I announced at the last CAPA Annual Business Meeting in Boston. Congratulations and thanks to all CAPA members, especially those of you who have been actively involved in and contributed to this great pathology community! Because of your strong support, dedication and contributions, CAPA achieved many goals and reached many new milestones in 2015, such as 1) establishing functional CAPA Subcommittees; 2) hosting the first CAPA Diagnostic Pathology Course in New York City; 3) co-organizing the first CAPA-Beijing Diagnostic Pathology Course in Beijing; 4) participating in the Chinese Society of Pathology (CSP) 2015 Annual Meeting in Kunming; 5) participating in the 9th AP-IAP Meeting in Brisbane, Australia; 6) publishing quarterly CAPA eNewsletters; 7) refining the CAPA website and increasing the number of website visits; 8) authoring a special section of review articles based on the CAPA Diagnostic Pathology Course for the Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine; 9) preparing for the first CAPA Companion Meeting at the 2016 CAP meeting; 10) recruiting many more members, including many lifetime members; 11) attracting

more sponsors to make CAPA more financially stable and healthier than ever; 12) improving management of the CAPA pre-existing accounts and completing an auditing process; and 13) creating two new CAPA awards - CAPA Honorary Award and CAPA Member of the Year Award, et al. The details are highlighted below:

1. Establishment of Functional CAPA Subcommittees

The establishment of the CAPA functional Subcommittees was the key step to successfully implementing ambitious goals. In addition to the Executive Committee (EC), seven Subcommittees were formed, including the Education Committee, Membership Committee, Nomination and Awards Committee, Publication and Website Committee, Finance Committee, Career Development/Academic Affairs Committee, and Practicing Pathologists Committee. Please go to the CAPA website for a list of the members of each subcommittee. The EC members and the chair and co-chair(s) of each subcommittee have met regularly by teleconference to plan and monitor the progress of each project and to resolve potential issues and concerns. The collective team efforts and wisdom have proven very effective!

Annual Meeting of Chinese Pathologists were successfully held from Nov 5 to 8 in Kun-ming, Yunnan Province. The meeting had various tracks in-cluding subspecialty training, platform presentation and un-known case discussion. It was well attended by over 1500 reg-istered attendees.

2. Education Programs

A. The First CAPA Diagnostic Course in

New York

The first CAPA Diagnostic Pathology Course, “Best Practices in Diagnostic Immunohistochemistry for Both Surgical Pathology and Cytopathology,” was successfully held from Saturday, August 22, to Monday, August 24, 2015, at the Sheraton LaGuardia East Hotel, Flushing, New York. The conference was approved by the CAPA EC and organized by Fan Lin, Lanjing Zhang, Lizhen Gui, Zongming Chen, Marilyn Bui, Huamin Wang, Fang Fan, and Jim Zhai. Over 130 practicing Chinese pathologists, fellows, and residents from different states attended this exciting and successful event!

This two-day course included didactic lectures and case-based presentations of diagnostically challenging cases in the fields of surgical pathology and cytopathology. It allowed practicing anatomic pathologists to become proficient in the application of diagnostic IHC in different subspecialties. The conference, presented by 28 national experts in the field of IHC, provided in-depth discussions on standardization of diagnostic IHC, newly described IHC markers, and implementation of best practices in diagnostic IHC. It addressed questions that practicing pathologists encounter in day-to-day practice and helped residents and fellows with their specialty board exam preparations.

This was another milestone for CAPA, but it would not have happened without the overwhelming support from the following people. Very special thanks to all of you!

Huihong Xu was a great help to Lizhen Gui in checking and recording the number of people registering for this course at the CAPA website.

On the conference morning, many volunteers, including Huihong Xu, Fan Chen, Peihong Hsu, Yihui Wu, Min Guo, Peisha Yan, Bihong Zhao, Songlin Liang, Jinhong Li and Shuan Li, spent hours at the registration desk helping with on-site registration and distributing name tags to attendees.

Fan Chen also helped Lizhen Gui collect course evaluation forms throughout the meeting.

Drs. Fan Chen and Xiaoping Sun were the official photographers and took numerous memorable and professional photos during the 2-day meeting.

Mark Liu spent a tremendous amount of his time in the weeks prior to the meeting comparing and contrasting local restaurants and selecting the best one for the Saturday night dinner party and social event. The environment was great, and the food was delicious! Everything was perfect!

B. Special Section for the Archives of Pathology & Lab

Med

Dr. Philip Cagle (editor-in-chief) and the Editorial Board of the Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine invited CAPA to contribute a special section of up to10 review articles to highlight the lectures presented at the first CAPA Diagnostic Pathology Course in NYC. Drs. Fan Lin and Lanjing Zhang are leading the project. All speakers have agreed to contribute to this very exciting endeavor. Manuscripts are expected to be completed by the end of the May 2016. The publication date will be determined by the Editorial Board of the Archives.

C. The First CAPA-Beijing Diagnostic Pathology Course

The First Sino-US Cancer Diagnostic Pathology Summit was successfully held from October 16 to 18 in Beijing. The more than 400 attendees included numerous pathology departmental chairs and professors from well-known medical colleges and hospitals in China. The conference was organized by Dr. Ning Lu, professor and chair of the Pathology Department, National Cancer Institute and Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, and co-organized by Drs. Ximing Yang and Fan Lin of CAPA. The feedback and comments from the meeting organizers, speakers and, most importantly, the attendees, were extremely positive, and the meeting organizers have already begun to prepare for the second conference in 2016! Congratulations and thanks to all CAPA speakers for a job well done! Thank you for making CAPA more visible in China’s pathology community! E. Participation in the CSP 2015 Annual Meeting in Kunming

The 21st Congress of the CSP was successfully held from November 5 to 8 in Kunming, Yunnan Province. It was attended by over 1500 registered attendees. One factor contributing to the success of this meeting was the collaboration between CAPA leadership and CSP leadership by including a group of excellent speakers from among CAPA members. The CAPA speaker team was led by Drs. Marilyn Bui, Yun Gong and Beiyun Chen. Each team leader was in charge of one area, with Dr. Yun Gong - oral presentation, Dr. Beiyun Chen - subspecialty training, and Dr. Marilyn Bui - case presentation.

The speakers and topics were as follows:

F. The First CAPA Companion Meeting at the CAP 2016 Annual Meeting

Dr. Lanjing Zhang’s proposal to hold the first CAPA Companion Meeting at CAP Annual Meeting has been reviewed and approved by Dr. Cagle and the Committee. This was great news and another milestone for CAPA! CAPA will gain further acceptance by mainstream pathologists and have an opportunity to offer pathology courses to all potential CAP meeting attendees. The 2.0 hour (CME credits offered) companion meeting will take place in Las Vegas Saturday, September 24, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. Drs. Lanjing Zhang and Huamin Wang and the organizing committee are working on the topics and speakers for this very exciting event!

3. CAPA eNewsletters and Website

The publication of the quarterly CAPA eNewsletters is another milestone. The eNewsletters have been well accepted and very effectively keep all members updated with CAPA news, upcoming events and activities, achievements from its members, networks with other pathology societies, and acknowledgements of contributors and sponsors. Drs. Huan -You Wang, Jun Zhang, Fan Chen and the Publication Subcommittee have led this project. Very special thanks to Dr. Fan Chen for her passion, talent, dedication and tireless effort to keep the CAPA eNewsletters published as scheduled.

The CAPA website has been updated with news and announcements in a very timely manner. We would like to acknowledge Dr. Jie Song’s talent and contributions to the website. It has been very active with an over 10 folds of increases in the website traffics in the past 10 years.

4. Membership

The successful future of the CAPA is largely relied on the growth CAPA members. And the membership committee, led by Dr. Lizhen Gui, has done extremely well in recruiting new members and lifetime members. There are 510 CAPA members now. In 2015, over 70 new members were recruited; and also there are near 50 new lifetime members (most of them are previously regular members). The CAPA membership database has been refined and restructured. It has been proposed to have three categories of members: 1) lifetime member who paid a lifetime membership due; 2) regular member who pays a membership due on a yearly basis; 3) and associate member who does not pay a membership due but interested in being included in the CAPA mailing list. A unique member ID was issued to lifetime members and regular members who are eligible to join CAPA elections (pending from the approval of the bylaws changes). The member ID for each member will be used as a special identification number during the next CAPA officials’ election in 2017, which will improve and ensure an unquestionable and unbiased election process.

5. Finance

2015 marked a year of successful financial reform in the CAPA’s history. In March, a 5-person subcommittee, led by Dr. Zongming Chen, was formally established to manage

CAPA’s finance as a group. It is composed of the current president, the current and past treasurers, the membership subcommittee chairman and a liaison officer (Drs. Fan Lin, Zongming Chen, Fang Fan, Lizhen Gui, and Huihong Xu, respectively). Teaming with the Executive Committee, it accomplished four major goals:

1) Improving pre-existing account managing mechanism to enhance operability, transparency and leadership supervision;

2) Completing an auditing process with the professional help to ensure compliance with governmental regulations and safeguard CAPA’s long term financial stability and growth;

3) Standardizing the vendor/sponsorship soliciting form to actively seek financial support;

4) Establishing an active monitoring mechanism to ensure accountability of all activities involving member engagement and contribution.

2015 also marked a year of the fastest financial growth in the CAPA’s history. The following table lists the most important numbers reflecting its financial performance when compared to 2014.

Looking forward into 2016, CAPA has planned many exciting events/activities to serve its members, all of which need more financial support. Building on the organization’s reserve, CAPA has already secured a significant amount of additional sponsorship pledges in a new round of solicitation, which is not included in the net gain session of the table above.

7. CAPA Awards

CAPA Honorary Award and CAPA Member of the

Year Award

Two new CAPA Awards have been created this year: the CAPA Honorary Award and the CAPA Member of the Year Award.

The CAPA Honorary Award was created to recognize a person (CAPA member or non-member) who has made a significant contribution to CAPA. The first Honorary Award will go to Dr. Philip Cagle. Dr. Cagle is the Editor-in-Chief for the Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and a professor of pathology at Methodist Hospital/Cornell Medical College. He has helped CAPA achieve two impressive milestones: 1) he approved the proposal for an Archives

special section to publish the review articles from the first CAPA Diagnostic Pathology Course; and 2) he approved the proposal for the first CAPA Companion Meeting at the 2016 CAP Annual Meeting. CAPA is very fortunate to have such strong support from Dr. Cagle! Congratulations to Dr. Cagle!

The CAPA Member of the Year Award was created to recognize the CAPA members who have gone above and beyond to help CAPA achieve its ambitious goals. Without their passion, talent, effort, and dedication to this community, these challenging goals would have not been accomplished.

Zu-Hua Gao Outstanding Service Award

Dr. Marilyn Bui is the winner of this traditional award. She is the chair of the CAPA Education Subcommittee for 2015-2016 and was a key organizer, speaker and moderator for the first CAPA Diagnostic Pathology Course in NYC. She led the CAPA speaker team and presented at the CSP Annual Meeting in Kunming, China. She has been very effectively soliciting for CAPA and successfully obtained sponsors for CAPA. Introducing CAPA Pathologists/Scientists

Dr. Jing Zhang (MD, PhD), Professor of Pathology and Adjunct Professor of Neurology, Ophthalmology, and Oral Health Sciences at the University of Washington (UW) School of Medicine in Seattle, Washington, currently serves as the Director of the Neuropathology Division of UW Medicine and the permanent holder of the Shaw Endowed Chair. More recently, he took over the

leadership of the Pathology Department affiliated with Peking University Health Science Center as well as Peking University Third Hospital. Dr. Zhang received his initial undergraduate and medical training in Shanghai, China, at the Second Military Medical College. After graduating from a PhD program in Cell Biology at Duke University in 1995, he finished his medical residency and fellowship in Anatomic Pathology and Neuropathology, respectively, at Vanderbilt University in 2001. Currently, Dr. Zhang is a practicing neuropathologist and ocular pathologist at UW Medicine and affiliated hospitals. Aside from his clinical duties, Dr. Zhang also leads a research team that is focused on neurodegenerative disorders, specifically Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. He is particularly interested in translational medicine, with a major emphasis on biomarker discovery and validation. His work typically involves collaborations with multiple medical centers, sometimes internationally. In 2007, Dr. Zhang won the Alzheimer's Award for his work in proteomics investigation of biomarkers in human cerebrospinal fluid. Dr. Zhang also has interests in molecular mechanisms, particularly in regards to mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation related to Parkinson's development and progression. He has been a principal investigator and beneficiary of multiple grants awarded by the NIH and various foundations for many years (2-3 millions/year on average since about 8 years ago). Dr. Zhang has also trained many young investigators, pre-doc, post-doc fellows, and junior faculty members; many of whom have now become independent investigators. Dr. Zhang has published about 200 SCI papers, with over 10,000 citations, and holds an H-Index of 55 as of January, 2016. Dr. Youli Zu (祖幼立) graduated from

Jilin Medical College in China, and received his PhD degree from Kyoto University School of Medicine in Japan. Subsequently, he performed biomedical research at the University of Connecticut Health Center as an instructor/assistant professor. For continuing medical education, Dr. Zu completed Pathology residency training at New York University Medical Center and also finished Hematopathology fellowship training at the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In 2004, Dr. Zu joined the Baylor College of Medicine and Houston Methodist Hospital. Currently, he is a Professor at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University and the Medical Director of the Hematopathology Section, Department of Pathology and Genomic Medicine at Houston Methodist Hospital. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Zu is also the Director of the Cancer Pathology research laboratory at Houston Methodist Research Institute. These combined positions enable him to apply his research findings to directly address clinical questions.

Dr. Zu is a pioneer researcher in developing clinical applications of the aptamer technology. Aptamers are a class of small-molecule ligands composed of short RNA or ssDNA. Similar to protein antibodies, oligonucleotide aptamers specifically recognize and bind to their targets with high affinity based on their unique three-dimensional structures. As “chemical antibodies”, aptamers offer several advantages for clinical use because they can be easily synthesized and chemically conjugated to various diagnostic and/or therapeutic agents, and possess capacity for fast cell binding and deep tissue penetration. Dr. Zu’s lab has previously developed multiple aptamers specific for different cancers and demonstrated the utility of aptamer technology for flow cytometric analysis, immunostaining of fixed tissues, detection of circulating tumor cells, in vivo tumor-specific imaging, nanomedicine production, targeted cancer therapy, and cancer immunotherapy. As PI/Co-PI, Dr. Zu is currently funded by multiple research grants, including NIH R01, R21, R33, and R41, and CPRIT grants from Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas.

One contributing factor to the success of this meeting is the collaboration between CAPA leadership and the CSP leadership by in-cluding a group of excellent speakers from CAPA membership. The CAPA speakers would like to take this opportunity to thank the CSP meeting organizing committee for their gracious acceptance of our presentation proposals and their kindly hospitality in Kun-ming. The junior members of the speakers especially appreciate the wonderful opportunity to be able to share the stage with many senior Chinese pathologists. Both the CAPA and CSP leadership are pleased with the result and will continue this collaboration. The

next CSP meeting is going to take place in 合肥 (date to be determined, late Oct or early Nov, 2016). The CAPA leadership will send
