The cardiovascular system carriesoxygen and nutrients to all of the cells in thebody. It also picks up carbon dioxide and other
waste products that the body produces so that
they can be disposed of.
The main components of this system are
1. the heart,
2. blood vessels, and
3. blood.

HEART
The human heart is a hollow, muscular organ that
weighs between 7 and 15 ounces and is a littlelarger than the size of your fist.
Its job is to pump blood through a network of
blood vessels. These vessels form a loop, whichstarts at the heart, goes out through your body, and
then ends back at the heart

Heart Chambers:
Right Left
Right Atrium receivesdeoxygenated blood returning fromthe superior vena cava and inferior
vena cava.
Right Ventricle distributes deoxygenated blood to
the lung through the pulmonary
artery
Left Atrium - receivesoxygenated blood from thepulmonary circulation through the
pulmonary veins
Left Ventricle distributesoxygenated blood to the remainder ofthe body through the aorta

Heart Valves:
1.ATRIO
VENTRICU
LAR
VA
LVE
o Tricuspid valve - regulates blood flow between the
right atrium and right ventricle.
o Bicuspid /Mitral Valve - lets oxygen-rich blood
from your lungs pass from the left atrium into the
left ventricle.
2. SEMILUNAR VALVE
o Pulmonic Valve - controls blood flow from the right
ventricle into the pulmonary arteries, which carry
blood to your lungs to pick up oxygen.
o Aortic Valve - opens the way for oxygen-rich blood
to pass from the left ventricle into the aorta, where it
is delivered to the rest of your body.

BLOOD
The last main component of the cardiovascularsystem is blood.
Blood flows throughout your entire body,
carrying oxygen and nutrients to all of your
cells and taking away the waste products thatthey produce.
Blood is a fluid that carries several different
kinds of cells.
Three types : red blood cells,
white blood cells, and
special cell fragments called platelets.
